I did the bottle trap and it worked ok with the banana peals then one evening I had forgot to empty the coffee grounds out of my coffee pot. The next morning there were fruit flies all in the grounds. I decided after seeing that I put the coffee grounds in the trap. In just a hr I had caught more flies faster than the fruit.

If you add just a few drops of dish soap to the apple cider vinegar, then it creates a thin film on top of the vinegar which the fruit flies land on and then fall through. They are then trapped and can't try to fly out again. I make this in small 1 oz containers and cover with punctured cling wrap to make it harder for any to escape.

Another variation that I've found useful of this trap is to fill the bottom of whatever container I'm using (typically a small tupperware container) with 1/2 to an inch of apple cider vinegar (I've used regular and rice wine, those work too) and add a few drops of dish liquid to the vinegar and stir it around until it's dissolved. The vinegar attracts them and the dish liquid breaks the surface tension so they're sucked in and drown. Works like a charm.

I made these with regular sized water bottles and it was a miracle! I was hosting woodstock for fruit flies in my kitchen. I made four traps, a new one each day until they were gone. I didn't have cider so I put little chunks of fruit in it that were very ripe. The hardest part was figuring out how to dispose of them afterwards.

  • @rockythirteen

I couldn't figure out why I had so many fruit flies around, considering there was NO fruit in the house or food on the counter. When you said they like to nest in the sink it made complete sense! I usually find them near the sink! I'm trying this the minute I get home! THANKS!

Thank you so much for your video! Someone told me to use a water bottle, but I couldn’t envision it because I didn’t know where the vinegar would go if i “just cut a water bottle in half and flip it over” was the directions they gave me. Also, your voice is calming and I found you funny, too. Thank you, thank you! I’m definitely going to come to see other videos you post about the garden.

I tried making a trap this way but it didn't work very well. Since the bottle top didn't form a seal with the bottom where it was inverted, I had flies coming in and sneaking out the gap. The way I make fruit fly traps is similar and works on the same principle. I put apple cider vinegar in the bottle and if I have a piece of overripe or rotten fruit, I toss that in. I do not cut the 2 liter bottle. I take a piece of plastic wrap and cover the bottle opening. Secure it with a rubber band so the plastic wrap is tight. Poke a few holes with the tines of a fork. It's amazing how fast they will clear an area. I have several traps going at a time because of the season but also because of my parrot who eats mostly fruits and veggies.

Before going on vacation i accidentally left a piece of food in my house, when i came back the kitchen was swarming with fruitflies, here is what i did. get a small open container, pour some applevinegar, a bit of water, and a drop of detergent to release surface tension, no need to stir,. First hour some had drowned but most were sitting on the edge. 1 day later i found 20+ flies on the bottom. Leave it there a couple of days and voila. Worked for me.

A bottle with a larger neck is going to increase the chances that some of the flies will find their way out. I would stick to a smaller necked bottle if you can find one. Ask your neighbors. They probably drink soda if you don't.

I've done red wine and soap. Give it a couple days. At first I thought it didn't work, then I noticed there weren't that many flies and when I went to rinse out the jar there were tons of flies! I no longer have a jar so I'll try this method next and see if it works.... I literally woke up from a random nap with my cereal bowl next to me with my lights on and saw all these gnats surrounding my bedroom lamp... talk about fear.

    Hi Y.P.G,
That's how we get rid of them fruit flies organically...this method I learnt from my uncle, few months ago and it works great. Though, the vinegar i use is aged home made vinegar, which has a very potent smell, similar to that of gasoline. I distribute a bunch of soda bottles around the orchard, to control the fruit fly population on my Psdium's trees, which are truly a magnet for the fruit flies. This method is also commonly used throughout the Island(Madeira).

    Nice video sir.
I looked up a trap and made one different because I did not have a bottle.
If you do not have a 2 liter bottle:
-have a jar or some type of bottle with a thin neck.
-if the neck isn't thin enough, roll up some paper and funnel it in the neck of the jar/bottle.
-add some rotting fruit to the apple cider vinegar.
-add a bit of dish soap to break the surface tension to help drown the flys

I like to add a strip of fly paper around the upside-down lid. Sadly, can't get the good old yellow strip kind anymore; the white kind doesn't work well but must be cheaper to make.
I tried vaseline around the edges, but those smart fruit flies just avoid it. Dang. But it does force them to fly lower and closer to the nectar annihilator.
I pour boiling water down my drains to scald the little beggars to lights-out land.

I put cider vinegar in a very small bowl, and added a little detergent. Works just as well -- or better. The detergent prevents surface tension on the top, and as soon as the flies reach the vinegar they drown. I think it worked faster than the trap, though that is working as well.

  • @snattler
    @snattler 7 лет назад

I use balsamic vinegar with a little cheap vodka. The acetic acid in the vinegar and the alcohol in the vodka makes it irresistible. Within a couple of minutes they will already be crawling around inside. I make a trap exactly like this with a soda bottle.

Around here we refer to those giant grapefruit-like fruits as Pomelo, or sometimes Pummelo. They can be eaten when green, but I would want them to be at least turning yellow and not a 'dead' green color. The flesh should not carry the bitterness of other grapefruits, but man...are those skins on them thick! Enjoy the fruit and let me know how it is.
