    It always frustrates me when people are loose with the word 'rescue'. It seems like every animal is a "rescue". While I don't think you have to always do something dangerous like jump into fire to rescue a pet you do however need to be saving it in some way. Like one fish I had that I considered a rescue was a goldfish that lived in 3 inches of ice cold muddy (and literally garbage filled) water that I overheard a coworker say was going to 'stuff him in the toilet' when he got home that day. Things like that are rescues. Not buying a hamster at Petco or buying a puppy from a friend.

    • @brownieboy8405
      @brownieboy8405 3 года назад +16

      Yep! It's weird to think about that because a lot of my pets would qualify haha. Rescued res puppy that was being abused by some kids, a cat that was in danger of being killed by an 'Alfa male' cat (that cat was ripped dude 😂), And my betta fish was half dead at Petco so that counts ig lol

      "Rescue" is just a term in the pet world that refers to a pet that was previously a stray or an abused animal and was adopted into a new home. It's rather arbitrary, so yeah people are gonna use it rather loosely

    • @cookiecat1317
      @cookiecat1317 3 года назад +8

      yeah exactly. my dog is a “rescue dog” but i don’t consider myself a dog rescuer. she was found chained outside someone’s house with no food or water an a bunch of holes around her (that she tried to dig) and the person who found her had to fight (not a physical fight) to get her to a rescue and then foster her. then i /adopted/ her. i didn’t rescue, i’m not a dog rescuer. i adopted her from someone who did rescue her and foster her.

      But lets just say that the first day I got my Husky he was 5 months onld but weighed close to 30 pounds less than he should have. The poor baby was water and food possessive for months. (Thankfully I managed to train it out of him)
      My second rescue was a 4 week old kitten I found in a pharmacy parking lot. She had 4 different sicknesses and weighed berly 1/4 of a pound.

    On the topic of everybody getting misidentified as "goldfish," when I worked at the library I kept a 16-gallon there with 6 tetras. My first 6* were flame tetras: little 1 1/2" - 2" guys with cool yellow to orange ombre action. Every other person who commented on them called them "goldfish." It really stressed me out because I worried they were going to think it was okay to put 6 actual goldfish in a tank that size.
    (*RIP to the flame tetras, who died young because a fool who briefly worked there insisted on feeding them on my day off. Apparently she said, "Oh, I know what I'm doing, I used to work in a pet store." I came in the next day to find the substrate practically coated with uneaten food and 6 super bloated little flamies. I scrambled to try to fix it but the damage was already done. I have never forgiven her, and I have never again found flame tetras locally. 😢)

    Heyo, axolotl breeder here! Extra fine sand is actually acceptable for your adult axolotl tank. Some owners prefer a bare bottom tank, and that is definitely the safest option, but fine sand works too. Chunky sand, gravel, and rocks are /never/ safe. The rule of thumb is the rock or piece of decor much be larger than your lotls head. if it is smaller than it’s head, it can and will be swallowed and can become compacted in the axolotls digestive tract. Fine sand, however, can pass through the digestive tract if swallowed. My three adult lotls are in a giant tank with fine sand as a substrate and all three are big and healthy. I keep my baby lotls and subadults without any substrate though because they are smaller and very stupid.
    If you are looking for a substrate for your axolotl, please do research! Some sand brands will not be safe for your baby’s home. It’s always important to check what chemicals are present and the fineness of the sand.

    • @atherisGAY

      It's pretty legit to keep arowana without substrate, they are big fish and top water. They will not give a damn about the floor. Giant fish also make giant poops and sand and gravel can explode in nitrate levels and gas bubbles if not meticulously siphoned and the arowana gains nothing from having pretty substrate but the danger of not having good water quality.. Not sure why chlorine (tap water) is not even being mentioned. Pretty sure that's the most common and quickest way to kill any fish by far. Goldfish are pretty hardly and they don't get killed that easily by temperature or oxygen. There would be signs first and probably could still survive a few days before dying for temperature/oxygen/cycling issues. 90% is due to untreated tap water, even goldfish could be killed within 15 mins without much signs.

    5:15 I own a couple axies and the fine sand is actually the best option (the next being either extremely large, unattractive stones or bare-bottom), they can swallow small amounts and pass it through without any issues and it promotes bioactivity. Larger grains are dangerous since they can be sharp and potentially shred up their vulnerable digestive system, and gravel is a sin in the axolotl community for very good reasons, so are those flat glass marbles and really anything they can fit in their mouths, they are forever dumb babies (very precious though)

    My cousin has a black Betta fish. He kept the Betta in a 1 gallon fishbowl. When he first bought it is was so beautiful and cheerful. But two weeks ago when I went to his house, his Betta’s fins were thin and the colour was so dim. The water was so black and cloudy. He only cleans the fishbowl once a month . He also has another tank which contain 5 glow fish and 1 Platy. Whenever I mention the fishes to him or if I go near his tank, he would either drag me away or tell me to keep quiet. I feel really bad for his fish. I wish they had a better home

    I haven't rescued fish, but I've brought two back to a healthy condition. One was from Petco, and he was so skinny and small compared to the other goldfish that we bought. I waited with him for hours until he would come out of hiding so he could get some food. This went on for months before he learned it was okay to come up for food instead of scavenging for what was left (I think he was bullied in the other tank, it was like 20 young fancy goldfish in a five gallon). And the other I got from a local fish store, he is a feeder fish, and obviously got sick. But we luckily had a spare tank and quarantined him. He got better within a few days to a week, and is now the biggest fish we have

    Bro I started at a live plant level. First thing I made was a golfish pond with live plants. I got the plants (as well as snails, shrimp and small feeder fish) from the natural environment. Now I have 10 Goldfish and 8 koi in there, as well as an eel-tailed catifish. They all survived an entire year without me feeding (whilst growing in breeding in that time so not underfed) living only off the plants, feeder fish, shrimp and bug larvae that naturally multiply in the pond. Since adding the koi though I now feed them pellets

    • @isaacfazekas9672
      @isaacfazekas9672 3 года назад +2

      @MUSIC PETS AND ART the positive effects that stealing a betta from a store that neglects them are:
      - the fish gets out of an abusive situation
      - a chain store is prevented from profiting off animal abuse.
      The negative effects are… nonexistent.
      When an illegal act has nothing but a positive impact on the world, the law needs to be re-examined and revised. Our morality should shape our laws, not the other way around. Until chain stores implement policy that prevents betta abuse, I believe that it is not only morally justified but also morally right to impose negative consequences on them.

    Sand is actually okay for adult axolotls.
    As long as it’s fine enough for them to digest it’s all good.
    Gravel on the other hand is a big “no-no”
    There are 3 options for substrate with an adult Axolotl:
    Sand
    Large rocks (I mean LARGE, must be bigger than the Axolotl’s head otherwise they might try to eat it haha)
    Barebottom, but I feel that axolotls don’t get enough traction on the bottom of the tank.
    The one problem with sand for an axolotl is that ammonia an build up faster, but that isn’t a problem if the tank is large enough and you are keeping up with maintenance and not over feeding. :)
    It’s worked fine for my Axolotl and I, but I do very frequent, small water changes to keep the water quality pristine. :D
    *key word ADULT. Baby axolotls can’t have sand. :)

    This kinda reminds me of a betta fish I had to rescue from a spoiled kid. It was kept in one of those half gallon Walmart plastic containers with what I thought was brown gravel (it turned out to be white) and those cheap paint peeling Walmart plants. The poor betta's fins were torn to shreds because of the poor water quality and he had a bacterial infection. I cleaned his tank gave him better water and medicated with my own fish meds. Then I lit the fire underneath this kid and explained why he needs to consistently clean his betta's tank with partial water changes every week/twice a week in such a small container or put it in something bigger. Than his mom hit me with the "well the fish is fine now it'll live if we put it back where it was." She also told me to not tell her child what to do. I face palmed and tried to explain to her that I know what I was talking about since I keep a fully planted tank and bettas. She wasn't having it and not even a week later they fully changed the tank and killed the fish. Mind you I told them to do slight water changes, but they took the betta out of it's water and into fresh water. No acclimation at all. So yeah needless to say please do your research when getting a pet and don't expect an eight year old to know how to take care of a pet. Case and point. I don't normally rant about stuff like this but fish are usually always the butt of neglect because they are cheap and "kid friendly ".

    The first video happened with me, all the new guppies I bought died by the next day, 10 or so guppies. Before that, I had other fish in there that were thriving. Talked to the pet store and apparently they also just had those fish shipped in that day and seeing as it was only those fish that were dying, we concluded it to be the high stress levels they had to go through, especially since a lot of petsmart employees are not too good with acclimating the fish sometimes and didnt even think about the amount of stress put on those fish from putting them in and immediately fishing them out with those nets, especially since theyre not too gentle with them in the first place. My water levels were safe too, tank was super clean and clear with a bit of algae for my plecos, so that was the only other explanation. In this case

Having nothing for them to grip to on the bottom of the tank can actually stresses them out.

    I have axolotls, don’t get me wrong I definitely don’t do everything right. However I made sure to cycle my tank for at least a few days before adding them. Fine grained sand is okay for their tanks however they need to be larger than 5 inches before adding sand, so their body can pass any ingested grains. Sand can cause impaction in general, so insuring proper size and the right type of sand can minimize the possibility.

So I can see that she doesn't have very much experience with water animals knowing that she also kept a betta in a fishbowl which made me VERY MAD and (i'm guessing I blabbered more in that video's comment section). Just curious about other opinions on such stuff. Personally, I've used Biodigest to set up tanks within a few hours.

    • @strawberrygoldfish
      @strawberrygoldfish 3 года назад +2

      Adding these products can help speed up the process but it does not replace cycling. The nitrogen cycle is the process of waste ammonia being converted it nitrite and nitrates by beneficial bacteria. It takes time to establish these colonies, which keep the ammonia(very toxic) from getting out of control and the nitrates that they become are less toxic.
      That was kind of a lot it seems but that is the reason for cycling.

    • @dylantan4245
      @dylantan4245 3 года назад +2

      @@strawberrygoldfish Thanks. :) Yes totally agree, there’s no skipping the cycling process. But for scenarios like hospital tanks or emergency holding tanks, using this in tandem with a small amount of stable media or alittle Seachem Safe would “cycle” the tank fast enough so you don’t end up with ammonia/nitrite related issues? Or for cases where medication that harms bacteria colonies(like kanamycin)?
      Thanks again for the advice.🙏🏻
