New Catamaran Owners Trust "the Professionals"... - Ep 81

- We help new sailors and Lagoon 440 owners tow their catamaran from the Dutch Caribbean island of St. Maarten to the French island of Saint Martin. Their catamaran has no auxiliary power, meaning it has no engines. We go through shallow spots, dodge ship wrecks and use small inflatable dinghies to tow their vessel through a causeway bridge, shallows, and dodge ship wrecks before they tie up to a dock in the boat yard. This was a case of new and inexperienced sailors putting their trust in professionals in the marine industry facilitated a the tow of the engine-less sailing catamaran in order for the professionals to complete a job they had already started. It's definitely not something we would recommend anybody do, noting the risk and danger involved, but we are glad to have been there to assist our friends.

That guy in the lead didn’t know how to drive a dingy let alone tow. He was the whole problem. Nice job guys
I think he was trying to look good for the cameras but was totally clueless and just kept crashing into the side of the cat .
Pro has no idea, when travis was side tied i thought oh finally someone that knows what to do. Should have side tied a boat each side for propulsion and steering via rudders on the cat
The so called professionals here were definitely lacking. I was super anxious just watching this fiasco. Nice job Travis!
As were we during the whole ordeal!😣
In my day we called this a clusterf**k. Yep, that's what you got here! Thank goodness for you and Travis!
We call it that now a days too!😆 that it certainly was!!
never was a cold beer so well deserved
As soon as the boat was being pulled out from the dock this looked like a disaster waiting to happen ! The so called " Professionals " were anything but pros . It looked like they had no idea wtf they were doing . When I owned my boat , unfortunately I had the pleasure of being under tow a few times . It went nothing like this . I can't imagine towing a 45'boat with one dingy . Thank god for Travis and Steph to help along with your other friends . I couldn't imagine how they would have completed this mission without your help . Great work guys
As newbie cat owners, that sounds absolutely terrifying. So glad you were brave and skilled enough to help!
You don’t pull a boat with a 50 foot long rope and expect to control it. Need to do it like a tugboat one on each side
Travis had a great idea! I don't know if they would have got their boat to the boatyard without you guys.
I am glad nobody got hurt, or nothing was damaged !!. Gong show was an understatement !!
Great video guys !! looking forward to the next one
So are we, phew!
This seems like one of those moments, when, after working your way up from knowing nothing, one day you realize, " Wow, we DO know what we're doing, and crap, we even know more than others." Great job!
It was exactly just that kinda moment!!
That was very stressful. I felt bad for Steph being stuck in the lead tow boat. Glad she was able to get out.
Great job Travis for taking control of the situation and unfurling the headsail. Sometimes it's hard to act in those situations.
The background music makes this video!
We tried so that we could show intense it felt for us! 😆
If your going to tow with a dinghy you tow with a line from the bow going over the stern this you steerage over the dinghy, the French pro had no idea, you were lucky. Well done Travis
Hey guys, from someone stuck at home, who no longer can go on adventures, I say enjoy every moment, and each other, time goes by way too fast, and thanks so much for sharing!!!😎
We fully agree! Thanks for watching 🙂
Never a dull moment for the crew of Jibsea on any given day in paradise. Well Done Steph & Travis.
An award to the both of you for your courage undertaking this clusterfness to help another cruiser out.
At the 14:20 mark- the captain of big yacht crossing the bow went Rut Roh-wth.
All of this happening IN the harbor with sorta professionals in charge has me wonder what next adventure you will get enjoy?
I was entertained this morning watching this, made my Friday just saying.
Stay well my friends you've earned it.
Glad we kept you entertained! And no, definitely never a dull moment out here that’s for sure😆
I wasn't even there, and I was stressed out. Great video.
You guys look good on that Cat…Good job helping those guys…😎⛵️
That was a nerve racking move. Stay groovy and stay safe.
That was interesting. Good thing Travis was there to take control or it could have been a complete disaster. Way to go.
I look forward to your videos every week.
That was stressful to watch! I can't imagine what it must have been like being there. Well done documenting this.
It's agonizing to watch until the Travis open the sail. Good job.
Who came up with the plan to tow that way? That definitely seems like a decision that was made while drinking.
I don't think they ever towed a boat with 2 hulls (maybe a hobie cat), the question is push or pull? pull in open water, push in tight quarters, in chapman's there is very useful information on how to tow. they did not have a plan. great job Travis. I could not believe what I was seeing!
Omg Travis! And Stephanie. Awesome 😎
When they showed up in a dingy I would have been like OH HELL NAW WE AIN’T! ! lol 😂
Great job you two! That was some totally crazy stuff for a Friday afternoon! Travis, you save the day my friend… stay safe out there!
Hope it kept you entertained! What a crazy ordeal
Turkey's and sailors, great job.
Man are they lucky Travis was there, what a disaster that guy in the front was sheesh! Travis to the rescue!!!!! Steph too!!!
We were in the BVI last week and based on IG, I think we were very close on a couple of occasions. Love your videos - happy sailing!
Isn’t it such a beautiful place?!
It was so cool to see how you and Travis were there for your new friends and definitely made what could have been a very bad situation into something good.
Very happy we could help them. We definitely know it would have gone a lot worse otherwise 😣
good job guys ,very very good
Thank you!
I am so proud of you and Travis! We saw Tootsie and Marie the second day we were here in St Martin. They were underway on the French side headed for the bridge to return to the Dutch side. Their friend was ahead of them in his dinghy, I assume to keep them away from all of the submerged wrecks and shallow areas. We later saw them at the marina in front of IWW. How amazing they were able to get the help they needed. 💕
Last of their upgrades being done over there! Thanks Jen 💕
Up until 14:57 it looks like a complete clusterf%$#& .. thank heavens for Travis.
A single dinghy tied near stern/midship is the best way to move a yacht with no power. Those "pro's" really had no idea.
That was totally nuts 🤣, thank you Heavenly Father😇🥰❤️🔥🌎🤲for the safety of ALL 👁🙏 Amen & Amen.
Wow.
Well that was a real dog and pony show. If towing, always have a craft behind to put on the brakes and he can also steer the towed vessel better from behind.. The skip should have stayed at the helm to direct the vessel being towed because he has steerage once the cat is starting to move forward . The tow vessel ust hast to stay on the nose.. Well another day perhaps.. I do like your videos though. Maybe yo might consider indexing them them to make your trip easier to follow.. Thanks and may you always have the wind at your back and following seas.. Cheers, stay safe afloat..
Yep a lot of lessons were learned on this day!
We number the episodes on each title. We also have playlists by year/category etc. hope that helps!
I hope sure hope Yvette and Tyler have a sailing location plan for all of her nice plants. Unsecured they will either disapper or be all over the interior of the cat.
12:27 Was the best bit for me "stop stop stop" what do you expect me to do apply the handbrake!! 🤣 One rib tied on either side just to provide propulsion and steer from the cat would have worked. If the vessel being towed has a keel and weighs about 50 x more than the towing vessel without a keel it's a nonstarter or in this case a non-stopper. Pushing from the stern and let the cat steer, which is what you did was a good alternative.
That’s one or our fav parts too 🤣
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice work guys ‼️ 👍 It is always good to have someone who has been sailing a while to assist. B. R. A. V. O 🎉
Thanks Richard!
Great episode. I could feel the stress. You guys did great🤪
As the video started, looked like,
What could possibly go wrong.
Then throughout thinking, All of you have More Guts then we'll Ever Have!. Thinking ahead....your Trans Atlantic Cruise is going to be Very Boring. Haaaa
Great Video ☺️
Lol! We can only hope going that direction!😆 thanks for watching!
Really cool
Glad everything went well.
I had the fun of towing and re anchoring a 33 foot mono yesterday by myself in 25knots of wind, never fun
Eek, doesn’t sound like fun at all in 25kts!
This should be easy with a pair of dinghy's setup for hip-tow one on each side. Finally got it in the end though!
Well I won't criticize, mostly because I believe everyone learned numerous lessons during that circus act. LOL. I do believe some circus music audio was called for though. Ha.
Ohhh yes, most definitely! Funny you say that, we had talked about adding similar music to the video😂
Did they check their bulkheads on their lagoon. 😀or do they have a parley revival on their hands
What a calamity or errors?
Just your average American experience...moving that is!
Oh My God!!!
Two words: Charlie Foxtrot!
It's obvious they don't know what they are doing. They should have larger "tow boats" other then a little rubber dingy with a small outboard. Also should have had a drag boat to help steer the cat. They got lucky.
💯
the tow boat should pick a point and head for it. the towed boat will follow. He was trying to steer every time it moved so he compounded the problem. I pulled a 35 ft up a rive with a 14 ft boat and 5hp motor. Slow but made it.
I wish I had a boat I could sail down there and help tow it. 😂😂😂
What a fiasco - it was extremely lucky that no one was injured and there was no damage to the boat. The guy who was supposed to be towing the boat was more of a hinderance than of value - just a nuisance little else. He didn't seem to know what to do or how to do it!!
It would have been far better to have one tender on each side of the cat (each with the same housepower outboards, - don't try this with different hp outboards - I've seen this go horribly wrong unless the tender operators are very experienced). With the captain of the catamaran at the helm and in control of all operations, i.e. by issueing commands to each of the tender operators. It is essential that everyone speaks and thoroughly understands the same language, not multiple languages!). Thus one person and only one person (namely the captain) is in command (a basic rule of the good seamanship) at all times.
I hope this helps someone.
Naval architect, boat builder, maritime operator ad offshore sailor.
Just as well cats have nine lives 😃🤣🍻
👍👍👍👍👍
The only word that comes to mind is "Cluster". The idiot driving the tow rig shouldn't be allowed to pull a little red wagon, let alone an expensive Cat.
Yeah most boats don't tow well . Best to push fron " fixed " back as you did...
So from mono-hulls you lash to the side. For cats it's best to push from between the hulls ?
Lol, the pro (lead tow) was clueless and only created problems. Obviously a poorly performed operation with no planning and no pre tow meeting/briefing. There should have been an experienced ‘Tow Master’ onboard the cat directing and giving instructions to the lead tow and the assist dingy’s. Also the assist dingy’s should have been connected port and stbd aft of midships to effectively assist the lead tow and to also effectively steer the cat with the cat also using its rudders once it had enough stw for the rudders to be effective.
Good job guys. But as for that led boat chap. He new nothing 7 created problems.
Weeellll...S*** shows like that are amusing right until you crack into a bridge pylon. It would have been so easy to have done it right, Two dinghies tied fore and aft alongside each hull acting as their own engines, the cat uses it's own rudders to steer in the channel and the ability to go one side forward and the other in reverse for tight maneuvering.
You can do the same thing with a monohull and a single dinghy, tie the dinghy fore and aft as far back along the hull as possible, preferably with the outboard aft of the stern, leave it in forward and steer with the mothership, then get the mate to hop back in the dinghy for maneuvering close to the slip.
If you are forced to tow any boat using a line from the bow to a dinghy, use the dinghies bow line to the boat to be towed and dirve the dinghy in reverse, which allows directional control. Trying to tie to the stern of the dinghy steals it's ability to control turns.
Bruce has great advice here. Lashing dinghies to the hulls provides the power but locked down to the cat. Then use the cat's rudders for steerage. This assumes the bridge openings were wide enough for the total beam. That leaves exiting and entering as the only tricky parts. The crosswind made that part hard I'm sure, but use your line handling skills to work it out until you have room to lash the first dinghy aside.
I echo your sentiment Steph about not placing too much trust in boat yard pros. I paid the price for that misplaced trust once. Now the best advice I can give is make sure you have good (liability) insurance.
Holy crap. And they are trusting these guys with engine replacement? HELL NO.
Would it have helped to have had handheld VHFs so everyone could have talked to each other?
Prob not a bad idea but in the moment everything was happening so fast, hands full, I feel like it would have just reverted to everyone yelling anyway 😣
I don’t think I would have showed anyone that cluster f ck.
Obviously the steering wheel on the “lead “ dinghy wouldn’t turn far enough.😖
Do sail drives act like steering rudders?
Nope they do not
I looked up stupid in the dictionary and this video came up
That was hard to watch
These people are sailors?
Why do they leave sunken boats?
It’s too costly for them to be removed
I am a professional specializing in towing and pushing other large vessels. No professionals were in this video. Only a cute girl and a pack of misfits
I felt sick watching this.. almost had to turn it off.. I think if that was my cat I would have died of heart attack,
Same!
Not a single PFD
If the boat went down, you’d still be able to walk back onto it 😂
What an amateurs 😳😬😝
This is a disaster I would have fired these clowns before they started show up with 1 under power dinghy 🙈
The French guy......SMH
Frogs can't tow haha
That was a sh** show.
Nothing shy of!
This is the most comical towing I have seen for a long time, the lead tow should be towing backwards,or lashed alongside and steering with the boats own rudders, considering they are supposed to be professional this is a joke.
