Monogram 1/32 Scale Phantom P-51 Mustang!

- This time I assemble a blast-from-my past - Monogram's 1/32 Scale Phantom P-51 Mustang with working features. With the touch of a button the propeller spins and the landing gear retracts! The entire airframe shell is molded in clear plastic giving the viewer a look inside a P-51 Mustang.
*Note: The fuselage stars were installed upside down. Too much sleepy late night modeling!!! The decals have since been replaced since the making of this video.

OMG it's been so long but seeing the thumb I remembered this, I had one of these or something very similar. The whole model was clear including the tail. I was so proud of myself because everything worked back then. Vaguely recall having to trim or sand parts to make them fit or move right.
Can't recall but like a lot of my old stuff it probably ended up as parts for my own 'custom' projects. I forget the term when you mash stuff together to make new air or space craft in model making.
RIP mom and dad, you made a modest but safe home for an insular kid with a huge imagination.
Great upload, great job on yours and thanks for the memories :)
Thanks for sharing!
What a memory.
I got this from my step sister around 1973. I built it completely and it worked!
However, I got really mad at her one day and destroyed it in a fit. What a waste.
Thanks for sharing this vi!
Thanks for sharing!
I built this model when I was around 12 years old in the early 1970s. I was able to get all features to work (landing gears, including the rear), bomb drop, etc. I guess the models in the 1970s had a better fit since the molds probably had a better fit (since it was an actual kit made by Monogram during their golden years). The model still sits at my parent's home.
Or I am just getting to old to believe I can get it to work! : ) Thanks for your comment.
I had one of these when I was 12 yrs, old. I really loved this model air plane. I'm now 71 and still miss it.
That is why I bought the kit. There are still a few that can be found on Ebay.
Im 621/2, I wanted it, but never got it.
But I did do the 1/32 scale with retractable gear n drop bombs, Monogram, if memories serve me right. It was gray molded, beautiful engine, cockpit, gear bay details!
I did all my models hand painting details, inside n out, even camo when applicable, was very detail oriented, down to hydraulic lines.
I always got A+ in art,lol eyes not so good now!🤣
Any who, I digress, Thanks for the memories of what we has back then!👍🏿
@@Southwest_923WR Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing. One constructive criticism however, both fuselage insignia are upside down!
LOL...Thanks Steve D I appreciate your input!
He was trying to replicate what we all did back in the '60s when we built this as kids.
Nice video.
Had and built two of these back in the early 70's, one I built while going to electrical A school in the Navy in 74. Still have two 70's era still sealed in the boxes waiting to build one of these days. Even had the visible V8 engine and complete visible chassis which the engine mounted in would run down the hallway. Spark plugs worked as did the transmission and differential. Good old day of model building.
Back in the day these kits were a wonder! Thanks for your time and comment!
Great build of a Monogram classic! My dad and I built this kit together in 1966, and it was instrumental in stimulating my desire to pursue a career in aerospace. Thanks for sharing!
I built that kit, about 45 years ago, when I was a kid.
Monogram also had kit of the P-51, without the motorized engine, and the stand. But had the same mechanism to retract the landing gear, only with a small knob to rotate. I built that kit too.
Lots of memories!
I built this also, around 1965 when I was in the 10th grade. It was really a groundbreaking kit at the time and everything worked but the wiring and battery contacts were a real pain, so if I ever build one again I'll replace the wiring and battery holder for sure. I'm 72, but it's never too late to be a kid again. Wright Flyer, USAF (1968-1972).
Thank you for your comment Wright Flyer! I agree...the wiring and battery compartment could use a major upgrade.
My favorite all time model and toy, I’ll never forget ripping off the Christmas wrapping paper, I built it through to completion with all functions operational, I went through some batteries, thanks for sharing the memories!
Thanks! Now if I could just find a Flap Jack!
@@scalemodelmaker659 What about Visible V8 and Visible Man, I had those too, I loved Visible V8 but not as much as P-51. I always preferred Monogram over other model manufacturers, they just seemed to be a step above and better quality, what do you think?
@@davesaftrains4368 When I was a kid Monogram was the model maker to buy. A visible V8 would be cool!
Back then I thought it was cool. Today I think it's awesome.
The only model that more awesome....A Flap Jack!
Nice build. Note on markings - the national insignia on the fuselage is upside down. The point of the star always points up or foreward. Also, if the model is to be a post-1947 F-51, then you need to add the red bars to all of the national insignia.
Thank you Jim! I appreciate your comments. I just updated the video description to include the comment that the fuselage decals are upside down. A late night building mistake! I appreciate the fact that viewers are interested enough in the video to notice my errors.
I recently won this kit on eBay, Awaiting delivery. Thanks for the great vid!
Thanks for watching!! Good luck with your build.
As I recall Dad and I built a Phantom Mustang in early 1962. That’s where I learned to follow directions exactly. I had to give it away when we moved across the country in 1963. In the early 1990’s I found the same kit again. It’s been on the pending list ever since. Your video might give me the incentive to build it. The Phantom Mustang 2.0.
Awesome! Thanks for your comment and good luck on your build.
I didn't have the opportunity ( money) to build this as a kid, but I wondered what it would be like to build it now at age 67. You've answered my question. I enjoyed your short film. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Steven!
Thanks for the inspiration
My dad built the non clear version back in the 60's.
He installed an electric motor and set up a small pair of female connectors for an external battery pack that worked great.
The landing gear control was controlled by a small nob located under the fuselage that worked fine.
Bomb drops worked properly too.
That sounds like a great project!
I built both the Phantom Mustang and the companion "regular" Mustang. Both kits featured retractable Landing Gear and droppable bombs. I enjoyed both kits at the time immensely. I do believe Monogram put out a smaller P-51B on a stand that tilted, dipped and climbed. I think the motor ran too. Great memories.
Thanks for your comment Tom! Great memories is right even if the kit isn't that fantastic. That is why I built it.
Excellent video & thanks for bringing back fond memories of Monogram's Phantom P-51D Mustang as I built one years ago as a kid!
Thank you! That is why I built the model....memories!
Perfect. Had all the same issues you discued . I Built two of these for customers. My Builds were 1/2 clear and 1/2 solid aircraft. Cheers - Phil
Thanks for your comment Phil!! Everyone will have a different building experience.
This was my favourite model when I was a kid.
My favorite as well!
Great paint detailing. I'm leaving mine bare plastic since that's how I remember it from the '60's!
Thanks for your comment! Either way it is a cool model!
I still have mine i built back in the early 80s still works perfect
Awesome!!
That is so cool .... I have a vague memory of these ... now have to hunt a similar one out in the UK ... great video thank you
Thank you and I hope you find a kit!
Pretty cool.
Thanks!
Besides the fuselage national insignias being upside down, the "U.S.AIR FORCE" would NOT be used without the red bar in the white bars of the insignia. I painted USAF aircraft while in the service and these tings really stand out.
Thanks for the info.
I got this kit from my dad back in the 60's . What year I cant remember. LOL It was complicated then.
Awesome!
I got this kit for Christmas in the '60s. It took me a day and a half of continuous work to complete it. All of the features including the bomb drop and the retractable tail wheel worked fine. Maybe they changed some features of the kit since then that caused these things to not work properly.
@@stevedrake1861 Maybe my fingers are just fatter and don't work as well anymore : )
I need to get me one , that's so cool. Great job love your work keep up the great work that you do, GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
Thank you!!!
I wanted this kit as a kid, but on a budget of $10-15 , I could get 2 or 3 other kits, and I didn't see it realy that often when i could afford it.
It was rare in the middle to late 70,s, at least in my model store sources.
Would still like too build it, even though Ive been out of the game since 1995.
Thanks for sharing!👍🏿
GOOD JOB ON YOUR BUILD, IVE STILL HAVE MINE, NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE GEARING ONLY THE RETRACTS. NEEDED TO REWORK THEM NOW THE DOORS CLOSE NICELY.
Hey thanks! I could probably go back and spend the time to get everything working as well. Its still a fun model to play with!
Never built the Mustang, but I did build the Phantom UH-1 Huey gunship, that was pretty cool.
I forgot about the Phantom UH-1!!! Thanks for the memory!
Very nice model !!!
Thank you
I built one of those when I was 9 ir 10, I think, It was loads of fun, another good one was the transparent v 8. I remember lubricating the gears with shortening and other things with corn oil.
The Visible V-8 is under construction and the video should be coming soon! Thanks for your comment!
P- 51 Cadillac of air..... 👍🔧
Such an iconic design!
That’s cool! You should try to do a video build of the Monogram Flap Jack. I have one sitting on my dresser that still works perfectly. Neat plane.
Thanks for your kind comments. I would love to do a Flap Jack. I had one as a kid. I just can't find one anywhere!!
In the opaque 1966 kit the tail wheel connects to a rod that is driven by the elliptical gear pulling it up and down. The tail wheel doors work smoother if you do some sanding on the tail wheel. Your kit also is a re-issue or "re-pop" so the molds for the pieces are not as sharp as when the kits were originally made. Nice build.
Thanks for your comments. Its fun to hear about others build experiences.
I also built this kit when i was 13 or 14
Bought this kit in 1975 .
I was a brand new Second Lieutenant , Air Force of Chile.
19 teen years old.

Thanks for the comment. That's an awesome bit of your history!
@@scalemodelmaker659 You are most welcome Sir !
Bar and star upside down in the fuselage....but still a great build
I wish I could redo that decal application!!!
Sir. You did masters work !!!!...awesome!!!!
That's cool as hell.👍
Thanks!
Espetacular but the fuselage sticker is inverted
Thank you! Yep I know...late night modeling!
WTF?You put both the fuselage star stickers upside down.Other than that, pretty cool!
LOL...Yep you got me! Must have been a late night. Thanks for your comment!
@@scalemodelmaker659 No worries buddy!Really enjoyed your build!
GOOD JOB, I STILL HAVE MINE.
Thank you! Mine is one of my favorite models.
I built one when they first came out, and all the features worked great. The decals are interesting. When the USAF was formed in 1947, a red bar was added to the National insignia. No biggie. Also, did you invert the fuselage insignia deliberately?
Thanks for your comments! Late night modeling and decal placement result in mistakes!!!
Nice build, but after all that effort and attention to detail, I have to ask...was there a reason for putting the national stars on the fuselage on upside down?
Late night....lack of sleep modeling! Its the number one comment on this video. I think this week I will take off the decals and order some replacements.
Oh man, Monogram was amazing! Why can't we have simiar things now? We have the technology with micro rc motors and everything.
It would have been cool to paint one side of the plane.
Thanks for your comment Rogue Plastic. It would be fun to take a kit and make the flaps work, ailerons, ect.
Nice job but your stars and bars on the fuselage are upside down. Star should have the point at the top.
Yep....late night building and stars don't go together : )
I have done it long long years ago
Nice 😁they need to make it drop the bombs too 😉
Absolutely beautiful. Really nice work. Just curious why the Air Force emblems are upside down?
Thank you! Late night modeling and correct decal placement don't go together!!
@@scalemodelmaker659 Too funny! Yeah, I've done the same myself. it's still a beautiful piece.
Star points UP!!
What glue did you use to bond clear pieces together - such as the fuselage halves, wing halves, etc. I have all of the tamiya types, Mr Cement, and revell contacta pro. I’m concerned with how the joint will look after gluing. I hope you see this comment/question after all this time. Building one for a grandson. Yours turned out great!!
I can't remember to be honest. I think I used CA glue but only used small amounts to minimize fogging the plastic. Thanks for your question!
A couple of years ago I ordered one of these from 'TXXXX' Hobbies and was completely devastated when I opened the box. They must have stored it in a very hot location, Hot enough to melt plastic. The Fuselage was so warped it wasn't possible to correct it and build the kit.
That is a bummer!
had one. cousin had the turboprop probably 62 or so
Fuselage stars and bars insignia upside down.
Yep....Late night build... : )
I would do it in one side clear, one side painted
Yes that would be cool! One could add more detail.
@@scalemodelmaker659 : you did a nice job
This is always a great kit, only one thing wrong, your national insignia are upside down on the fuselage.....
What can I say...late nights and decal application!! : ). Thanks for your comment.
I can't remember how many times I've done it myself, it just happens but I still love your work!!!
Hi, great job! What kind of cement did you use for the clear parts?
I used Tamiya Thin Cement carefully applied. I taped the fuselage halves together and spot glued and left it to dry overnight then removed the tape and glued those spots. Thanks for your question!
Hey I remember assembling one of these great models in 1964. Are they still around for purchase & if so can anyone tell me where I can acquire one from please!! I live in New Zealand!!
There are a few that can be found on Ebay. I picked this kit up at my local hobby store a few years ago.
I had this kit many years ago...don't remember what happened to it ??? I did notice you installed the fuselage national insignias upside down ???
Thanks LICobra. Late night modelling and decals don't go together : ).
@@scalemodelmaker659 Yes I learned that many years ago
I bought two of these kits on ebay and I built one of them about 5 years ago. When these kits were still relatively new back in the late 60s and early 70s, this was a nice kit. Today, not so much. They still use the same, original molds to make all of the parts, and these molds have worn a lot since they were new, the result is many of the parts don't fit very well anymore. Some of them were so bad they had to be modified, or not used at all. I still have one new in the box, still has the plastic wrap on the box, hasn't even been opened. I will not build this one. The ultimate 1/32 scale P-51 kit is the Tamiya kit. It's much more detailed, and is true to scale in shape, but it's also much more expensive. I guess you get what you pay for. The nose on the Mongram kit is a bit too short and is therefore not accurate...
I appreciate your interesting comments and agree! I have not yet had the pleasure of building the Tamiya kit but hope to do so one day.
remove the left side starbar and reinstall a new one please
Time for a overhaul!
🙂👍
Mine ended up in the bin it was so warped ...............absolute rip off. like your work .
Thank you sir! Mine was warped as well.
I bought a motor for my Mustang, just like you did. Don't bother!
On its very first flight, it just hit the ground. Fail. Not enough power.
