I have one of these amps that I bought new in 93. Had it for 15 years playing on small stages as well as large ones. Played stratocasters and telecasters through her and she always sounded great. Only thing that I changed was her input jack. She was abit hard to contain at times volume wise on smaller stages, but all in all a good amp. Played country rock and blues. Plugged into #2. Never used the drive channel. For overdriven things I used a first gen TS9. Got alot of compliments through years from the main acts guitar players we opened for regarding the tone I got especially with a tele. Enjoy your videos Landon! Best regards from northern Michigan!
Good review, but you missed a couple of key points on the amp. I have owned a reissue for about 6 years now and love it, I also added the additional 12" speaker matching tweed cab - so it gives you a mini stack of sorts, save you using an amp stand. The Effect loops section is where you missed some juicy details...most amps call it send and return but you will notice fender calls it Preamp In and Preamp Out...so why the confusion? Because this serves a multi purpose outside of the effects loop usage.... *Preamp Out* If you plug a cable in the Preamp Out (nothing in Preamp In) then you can get a direct signal to record from the preamp section of the amp, then you can add whatever cabinet, re eq and do whatever with you recording software, interface etc... *Power amp In* If you put a cable in the Power amp In (nothing in the Preamp Out) now your amp will serve as a power engine for whatever pre-amp you want to stick in it. Could be that sweet tone 12w amp you have but can't play with a band, so you take the out on it into the Preamp In and presto you have the tone stack (preamp section) of the 12w amp now using the 40w power section of the reissue and its 12" speaker. Or you could use your Vox Tonelab, Amp pedals, Line 6, Boss GT etc...as your tone stack powered with a 40w power section and bypassing the Blues Deluxe Reissue's tone stack and having little to no colorization to your device you are inserting. *Input Jacks* Also your inputs 1 and 2 have a function also, 1 is normal and 2(by itself) is -3db..so why? Well say you gig with a single coil and humbucker guitar, well instead of messing with your volume you can plug the humbucker in 2 and the singles in 1...this will offset the louder output of the humbuckers against your volume settings on the amp, and then by clicking the bright switch will lesson your eq changing also but brightening up the darker humbuckers.*If you plug two guitars in at once the -3db on the 2nd input is eliminated and 1 & 2 are equal. * Good review! Great amp! Also the Clean channel's tone stack is more "thick" in sound, more mids and lows whereas the Drive channel has less mids and lows, I think fender did this to compensate to help you cut through the mix and also gain adds more mids and lows and it can get muddy fast with more drive added. P.S. I don't put any effects thru the loop, some peeps like using modulation between preamp and power section, but I find this amp takes it great straight in the front....handles pedals so good! awesome thanks for all info! I was borrowing it for one afternoon, so I quickly learned it's features, but ya missed some really key points. thanks again!
@Trevor Denault That's very interesting. Where did you find all this information? (also, just a note: I think you confused "power amp in" with "preamp in")
@@51MontyPython Hey Monty, yes I did write that wrong, have since corrected, thanks! The manual states under the PREAMP OUT / POWER AMP IN section (1) Effects Loop - Connect PREAMP OUT to your effects input, and POWER AMP IN to the effects output. (2) Multiple Amps - Connect PREAMP OUT on the primary unit to POWER AMP IN on the auxiliary unit. The primary unit is used to control the auxiliary unit, except for Reverb and Presence which remain active on each unit. (3) Recording or Reinforcement - Connect PREAMP OUT to the input of sound equipment. Use shielded instrument cables with PREAMP OUT and POWER AMP IN. Both jacks are located before Reverb and Presence in the signal path. So from that you can see all the options I listed in my original reply, plus I have owned the amp for almost a decade now and have experimented quite a bit with it and tested all the variables to test out various tones etc. I will tell you that in the beginning I was going to change the speaker, 8-10 years back that was the "big upgrade" to this amp, but that said, two things changed my mind. 1. Was the addition of the extension cabinet, it gave the amp a different dimension. I am always about 2 or more speakers, 2x12, 2x10, 4x10 - all which I have, so the 2x12 was a must and Fender did something different with the extension cab, they made it a closed back with a celestion in it. While the amp itself came with Eminence Fender special design. So two voices that blend oh so well, the ext cab is quick dark and mid/bass heavy compared to the sharper cut speaker in the amp, so they blend oh so well. And 2. I let the speak get broken in. Years later on the forums where all the guys were swapping out their speakers a ton of them went back to the original after 1, 2 or more swaps and found that once it broken in it was best suited for the amp. My theory was Fender put the best fitting speaker for the price point to keep the amp at its price range and it was well suited for the amp, the Deluxe series of Hot Rod and Blues deluxe amp is the standard as backline on concert stages and everywhere round the world, they did something right.
@@crunchyflower Interesting to know. Thanks. I'll have to consider it all in my decision. Do you know by any chance if this amp is good for, or can accomplish a SRV type of tone?
I use this amp with a Les Paul and a SD-1 overdrive into a DS-1. When I first got the amp I wasn’t sure about it but I started using the second input and I got the tone I wanted.
The reverb does not work on this demo. Sometimes people switch the cables around in the reverb tank, and then it does not work. Or maybe the cables are not connected at all.
I just bought one of these today to go with the new Stratocaster that I have on the way. Hope it was worth the money. I love the tones that I’ve been hearing through all the research I’ve been doing seems like a nice amp.
I own and play a Blues Deluxe and I concur with Landon that this is not an ideal amp for metal. I can get some pretty heavy tones out of it, though, running a distortion pedal into the clean channel. It's a pretty bright amp overall so I find that I'm having to pull the treble back pretty heavily on both the amp and on the distortion pedal tone setting if I'm using a pedal. This amp benefits IMMENSELY from a speaker upgrade. I swapped in a brand new Eminence Texas Heat 150w speaker for just under $100 and it made a world of difference. The low end was really muddy and flabby with the stock speaker. The Texas Heat really tightened up the low end and gave it a much greater presence in the overall tone. It also dialed back some of the excessive treble without losing any of the beautiful shimmer of this amp. If you already own this amp and still have the stock speaker, definitely upgrade it. You will be amazed at how much better it sounds.
MonkyMonk729 No clue about replacement speakers.I play all genres of music.Which speakers would you recommend for Praise & worship styles as well as Classic Rock styles? Where can I get these speakers.Do i need a tech to swap it or is it pretty simpler? Thanks.
I want to update how I use this amp. The Swamp Thang is broken in and sounds very, very good. As it has mellowed, I now use the presence set at close to max. Adds chime and power tube umph.
@Nintariz I bought this amp a few years ago and I use a tube preamp for all my various distorted sounds and effects. The amp is used simply as a clean amp and my real style of sound comes from the Digitech 2120 Artist. This is a hellaciously loud amp, very versatile as it sounds good just playing through the amp, but fully customizable with your pedals/effects. You could do metal, is what I'm trying to say. :-)
gets petty wild when it's turned up full. definitely consider one of these if I ever get another 1x12 combo. what kind of speaker did you put in yours?
I got an Eminence Swamp Thang. I also have a Texas Heat both sound great. The Swamp Thang sounds more Fender but the Texas head is super fat in the mids it rocks. :-)
Man, I have one of those and always thought something was wrong since the Master was not a "master" volumen. Thanks, very clear and to the point. Thank you!! Great video!
Despite what anyone says, Ronnie Van Zant Loved Neil Young, and supposedly was buried with a Neil Young shirt on. What does my comment have to do with this amp. Nothin
Cool demo! I put a Swamp Thang in mine, I use the 2nd input (it's bassier/darker with single coils), and leave the presence and bright switches off. Bass at 8, treble 7, mids 6. Thing sounds nice and warm.
Hey Landon - I just bought the Blues Deluxe Reissue in emerald green (really hard to find! The emerald is more like a Hunter green - my favorite color). Just a beautiful amp, and so lucky I found it. I watched your review prior to my purchase, and your review was the deal clincher for me. Am still learning the amp, but I just damn love the thing.
The stock speaker sounds muddy, bad. I put a Eminence The Wizard and now is AMAZING. Has Acutronics Reverb ( no tube ) but is excellent, Just 5 tubes , if replace them is needed. Many years enjoying it. Greetings from Chile
I don't know if you'll see a comment on such an old video but; FYI, this was page one, above the fold on a google search I did for this amp. Great video! I'm trying to decide between this amp used or a new tweed version of the bassbreaker 30R. I think I'm leaning towards the bassbreaker, it seems to do everything that the this amp does and more. But. . . reissue amps are dead simple to work on and service, the BB range, not so much.
By the way if you have this amp check the reverb tank as some were shipped with the RCA phonos (Red and White) the wrong way round as the tank was labelled in reverse. Just swap the leads around if the reverb sounds cruddy and it should work properly. Great demo , thanks.
Interesting. I just bought one and the drive channel, even when drive, master, and guitar volume and maxed it doesn’t break up, it just gets louder, hardly any crunch.
hey thanks! Two possibilities, or a combo of both. It looks like the speaker isn't stock, it's a Fender speaker. Also the Lace Sensor Red-Dually humbuckers have a great output. Could be one or the other, can't say, I was just borrowing briefly.
When on the Drive channel, the Volume doesn't do anything. Volume only works on the clean channel but then the Drive and Master don't do anything. If you want to crank the Drive and the Master it's going to be very loud without mods or an attenuator.
ya Landon I own a Blues deluxe reissue i like the demo pre amp in out for the effect loop your right the instruction with amp are not very clear regards to the effect loop?
Will this work in an appartment with a jhs volume box in the fx loop? Using it for clean tones and using pedals for overdrive? Or still crazy loud or tones not so good at bedroom volumes? Thanks help would be really appreciated.
I just ordered this amp and after watching this video I believe I made the right choice. I have one question though, I keep seeing write ups about folks putting lacquer on this amp. Does the lacquer make some kind of tonal difference or is just for protective purposes. Is there any benefit to leaving it un-laquered? Thanks so much for the walk through. I'm a new player and this was very beneficial
Aundrey Long hey thanks for checking out the video! I can't say what lacquer would do, I honestly haven't heard of that being done on an amp. I don't see it having any tonal effect whatsoever though
Late to the party, but the lacquer is just for protective purposes if you gig or haul the amp around a lot. It keeps the tweed from fraying and peeling away, as it has a tendency to do without the lacquer.
I was thinking about getting this amp, but, I'm not gigging with it, so, I was concerned about it being too loud (for home use) in order to get a decent tone (not that I mind cranking it up nice and loud, but, within reason. Note: I _don't_ live in an apartment, for what it's worth), but figured I could just turn up the preamp volume so I could still drive the preamp tubes, and just use the Master Volume to attenuate the actual volume coming out of the amp. But you're saying I can't do that, at least on the clean channel, because the Master only controls the drive channel?
Google “Amplifier Master Volume Module” Made by Dr Watson it’ll tame the volume of that beast And it plugs straight into the effects loop No extra cables or bs and it’ll solve that problem
@@skabetty97 Wow, thanks. I'll have to look it up. So am I assuming it still allows the tubes (pre and power) to be driven so as not to affect the tone (only the actual volume)?
I gave up on the reverb Took it to a tech and he told me the amp came with the wrong foot switch and burned some thing which he said he fixed and I still can't hear the reverb. The Tech also said that some one had already worked on it and did a mess, I bought it from MF new so they sold me a bad one . I never heard the reverb but was unable to send it back at the time due to illness I was having. I told MF aboit it later and they didn't say they would fix it months later so Don;t buy it from them. Also had issues with a spider amp that has no real instructions on how to use it . They at MF sell lots of junk that people sent back and they resell it so watch your selves.
LOL! Looked at the video specifically for demo of foot switch and on how to use it and you aren't demoing it!. Mine seems to do nothing but change lights from green to red!
I recently played this amp and fell in love with it so I'm really interested in it. the only thing I'm not sure about is if I wanted to use this to play metal (adding pedals) and play shows with it(add Mic to the amp) would it still be good it worth it?
Javier Hernandez hey there! Fender targets this amp at rock/blues/country, however it has a great clean tone. there's nothing stopping you from putting some high gain metal pedals in front. that could work, I would recommend trying that in person though to see if you like the resulting tones.
Try a boost or comp into the front end. not in the fx loop but before the preamp so that you can drive the tubes, I use a mxr dyna comp to even out dynamics and add sustain.
That seems to be an issue with the amp. I took it to three technicians and they all said nothing was wrong, so out of frustration I pulled the tank and inspected the springs and they all seemed OK until I touched them with a chop stick and as it turned out the wire which was very small leading into the side of the tank was loose but not noticeably loose. I pressed it in more and the issue was solved. Many others I have spoken to had the same issue. Quality control, ugh!
You said your guitar had single coil and humbucker so we could hear both, but then you just used single coil on clean and just used humbucker on drive???? Inadequate.
It's people like you that make me say "fuck that" to putting the time and effort into making these types of videos. "INADEQUATE... boo hoo!". Then go play the damn amp yourself. You're gonna sit and cry and bitch about this video not showing you every single thing you wanted to know? Jesus Christ. People are the fucking worst.

I've had one of these amps for eight years. Lots of gigs and really pushing the 6l6's using a power attenuator and no issues. Not sure I would be comfortable doing this with a vintage or boutique amp.

Yes - the JHS VB works really well thru the FX Loop. Gotta pay attention to what it does to the tone and Reverb tho. Subtle changes from the VB.
Needs more white text on mirror surfaces.
That amp sounds really good though probably more than what I need for home use.

Google “Amplifier Master Volume Module”
Made by Dr Watson it’ll tame the volume of that beast
And it plugs straight into the effects loop
No extra cables or bs and it’ll solve that problem
I don't even remember making this! :)

Thanks. Would love to see it vs your VOX AC15. Shout out from Vancouver.
Darren P ah shoot! I was just borrowing it. it's gone. Im in Ottawa. thanks for checking out the video
the reverb seems not to work...
paan36ty hey you're right. the amp's owner pointed out the tank wasn't working or was playing at a very low level after the video was made.
I think you need the foot switch to turn on the reverb.
+Brian Bouman I had it working in another video without a footswitch. the tank died. the owner let me know after
@@landonbailey I had the same issue with mine. I found the spring going into the tank was loose. I pushed it in and it was fine. Just FYI
nice!
would you recommend this amp for surf rock/indie surf??
Eg luna hey ya for sure! just note the reverb tank wasnt working properly when I made the video. It's a lot fuller when working
awesome thanks brotha!!
no problem. I don't play surf myself but love the sound. I've been using surf style backing tracks in my most recent 5-10 videos
what was wrong with it? I have this amp and I find the reverb is subtle also, very subtle.
never found out. I was borrowing the amp at the time
Can u teach me why video so smooth and HD
What camp device u use for????
+bandroom03 Im using a Samsung Galaxy S7 for the video and running at 60 frames per second. I hope that helps
lando27music thanks
bandroom03 no problem. anytime!
Dude how could you handle playing it maxed out with earplugs? This amp is extremely loud!
blues deluxe reissue or hot rod 4?
which ever one you like best
Perfect clean. Not same for drive
I recently played this amp and fell in love with it so I'm really interested in it. the only thing I'm not sure about is if I wanted to use this to play metal (adding pedals) and play shows with it(add Mic to the amp) would it still be good it worth it?
Javier Hernandez hey there! Fender targets this amp at rock/blues/country, however it has a great clean tone. there's nothing stopping you from putting some high gain metal pedals in front. that could work, I would recommend trying that in person though to see if you like the resulting tones.
lando27music thanks! I'll give it a try next time and see how it goes.
Javier Hernandez cool! I'm not very knowledgeable in the world of Metal. Check out the RUclips channel called Agufish. He knows metal gear. 🎸🎸
Who are you looking at to your right?
right now or 7 years ago?
@@landonbailey .......maybe last saturday around 2:30 pm EST
What about channel 2???
My BDRE doesnt get anywhere near the drive/dirt you get. Not even close.
it's gotta be a combo of the high output pickups and the speaker
Try a boost or comp into the front end. not in the fx loop but before the preamp so that you can drive the tubes, I use a mxr dyna comp to even out dynamics and add sustain.
I see you too, like Johnny Greenwood.
busted! ya love his playing :)
@@landonbailey mute switch and all. Gotta love the ingenuity
Sweet 👍
it does great the neil young thing
ah cool!
Si puo'avere una spiegazione in italiano? Grazie.
Sì, aggiungerò la traduzione italiana e risponderò qui.
ok la traduzione è completa. È disponibile in sottotitoli. spero che abbia senso
@@landonbailey grazie molto gentile. Ne ho 1 uguale ma nel suono clean, a volume 2 comincia già a distorcere a volume 4 niente suono clean. G|azie
@@landonbailey?
@@landonbailey si grazie. Pero'se cerco un suono clean questo ampli non va bene.grazie. 👋🏻
IT GOES TO 12 .......LOL
I didnt even notice until you pointed that out lol
Find a USA ‘90 made original. Much much better killer amp.
cool! any major differences you know of? 👍😁
Reverb is fault bro
doa
Wow my reverb is broken too...
ya I didnt realize until after making the video
Lando27Music how did you fix it?
wasnt my amp. I believe the owner replaced it
That seems to be an issue with the amp. Quality control, ugh!
can't believe techs couldn't solve that one 😊
Se dovessi basarmi su questa prova direi che l'amplificatore fa schifo...
Stop talking, too much bla bla, just play !
+Damned you should see how much talking I strip out in editing
You said your guitar had single coil and humbucker so we could hear both, but then you just used single coil on clean and just used humbucker on drive???? Inadequate.
It's people like you that make me say "fuck that" to putting the time and effort into making these types of videos. "INADEQUATE... boo hoo!". Then go play the damn amp yourself. You're gonna sit and cry and bitch about this video not showing you every single thing you wanted to know? Jesus Christ. People are the fucking worst.
Not a fan. Sounds OK I guess but not great.

+Neil Matthews Awesome, great amp for sure!
I just got one. It is glorious!
nice! have fun with it!
Lando27Music I’ve had mine for a few months and really like it. Within this family, I also have a Blues Jr iii and Pro Jr iii...granted, you could spend more as you work upward in the Fender Tweed family, but I think my ears are too tone deaf to see a need. The Blues Deluxe Reissue is the most I think I’ll be needing for a long while ahead...
"Made in Mexico", all you need to know. I gave thumbs up to the review but unnecessary.
urbansoul02 my guitar was made in Mexico. are you talking about the amp? I just don't recall what we're talking about. 😁
+urbansoul02 hey no worries. it's not my amp. I didn't even know where it was made. doesn't matter to me. we're all on the same planet. 👍😆🎸
urbansoul02 all good. thanks for checking it out
I've had one of these amps for eight years. Lots of gigs and really pushing the 6l6's using a power attenuator and no issues. Not sure I would be comfortable doing this with a vintage or boutique amp.
too much babble
