- Recently discovered never-before-published close-up footage of Wayne Kramer & The MC5 performing in Chicago (at 00:30) during the Democratic National Convention 1968. Also, a quick shot of Phil Ochs (at 00:28). The original footage is roughly 30 minutes unedited. We have cut it down to under 5 minutes as a highlight reel. Synched to Wayne Kramer's original underscore musical compositions. August 25th, 1968. Audio © Wayne Kramer
RIP Wayne. One of a kind...
This is footage from the Department of Defense DASPO-CONUS (aka Department of the Army Special Photographic Office). Thanks for inquiring/commenting! -wkHQs
Wayne Kramer : how are you doing these days? I just wanted to relate to you how and when I became a fan of the MC5. It was 50 years ago and I was in 6th grade, 12 years old. One day my teacher told myself and my classmates that she had an idea about something she suggested we do the next day which was Friday. She said something to the effect ( don't remember the exact words ) that she would bring in a few of her favorite records, listen to them, and after each record, go around from student to student and have them give an opinion about each one. Of course, everyone was enthusiastic over her idea; anything to avoid a typical day studying subjects from the curriculum. The next day she brought in albums by Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Jefferson Airplane and the MC5. There were mixed reactions. Many kids just ignored the music and goofed around, I remember that I
1.) Liked Axis: Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix because the guitar
playing and vocal sounded cool.
2.) Liked Surrealistic Pillow by the Jefferson Airplane because Grace Slick had such wonderful vocals, especially on White Rabbit and Somebody To Love.
3.) Liked Willie and the Poorboys by CCR because I already had several 7" singles and the LP's
Green River and Bayou Country.
4.) Liked In-a-Gadda-da-Vida by Iron Butterfly, not caring much for the shorter songs on Side 2.
5.) When she played Kick Out the Jams by your band, the MC5, I remember telling my teacher that it was my favorite. I loved the loud, heavy-duty guitars, the fast tempos and, I especially remember liking the wild, reckless feeling it had; the feeling that it could go completely out of control any minute. Most, but not all of my classmates hated it. The few of us that liked it hung around our teacher, pouring over the artwork and asking lots of questions about the band. On a sad note, a couple of kids told their parents about spending most of the afternoon listening to rock and roll records. The parents complained, and she got reprimanded, but that ended any further record listening with our teacher. She was the coolest teacher I ever had.
That was my introduction to the MC5.
@@privatenumber7243 cool teacher. I got kicked out in jr high for dressing like a hippie. Didn't stop me from dressing like Janis Joplin and Hendrix and the like. (I was 15 yr old girl) I just changed schools
RIP Brother Wayne Kramer (age 75)
Superb! I was born into this world on August 27th, 1968 in Philadelphia to a draft resister father and a tripped out mama, both still teenagers, so we all grew up together. Thank you Brother Wayne, for giving me and my parents the soundtrack to our lives, I was a Super Star Sonic Baby rocking to MC5 as soon as I could walk! Love you!
I came home on leave from basic training in the Air Force and walked right into the middle of the riot. I had no idea that it was happening as we didn't get any news of what was happening. It was crazy.
I saw the fab 5 in a broken down former bowling alley in a forsaken city, Peekskill NY June 14 1969, they hit their stride right at that magic moment. Breathtakingly incredible. I'm 69 now in June. 400 angry white teens co mingled with 200 REAL black panthers. We were young, strong, focused, and seething with 60's anger. The 5? Came out with after the Left Banke tried to quell and warm up the small gathering. The 5 burst onto the stage with stars/stripes, bangles, shiny suits of pastals colors and more. They possessed more energy than this whole lousy century will produce in one min. Unforgettable and I'm so sad, like a few commenters here, I too lived in MI. Birmingham. I used to go to a lousy little bar/restaurant on Old Woodward near Creem Mag HQ where the 5 put down the jive many many times in their prime. There will never be a rock and roll group like them. No comp
Hoctor...unbelievable that the MC5 could play Peekskill only about 15 years after the riots in which white supremacists tried to kill Paul Robeson and Howard Fast! The times were changing!
Rest In Peace, Wayne Kramer...😭
Thank you, Wayne🙏💔
Fantastic! Love MC5 . Wayne Kramer, brilliant.
I don’t know if footage exists of the MC5’s performance that day, but it was at an event supposed to be the Chicago version of Woodstock, but the Chicago cops are no joke and all the artists except MC5 and Janis Joplin backed out, and only MC5 actually played before it got too hairy. That spot in Grant Park is known as Cricket Hill and I’m lucky enough to have played on that exact spot once with my own band, and if you played one of the legendary 90’s Chicago events known as Punk Picnics, you did too.
Kick out the jams forever.
This ain’t the summer of love. Nice one, Mr. Kramer.
I remember reading in an interview with Kim Thayil from nearly 30 years ago, around the time Soundgarden recorded their major label debut, that he thought of The MC5 as his greatest musical influence. All these years later, seems like awesome destiny to see Kim playing with Brother Wayne on the MC50 celebration.
It's just interesting people watching these scenes from so long ago. It's trippy to think that this is the same world we live in.
And it will continue til the truly end
The war is now perpetrated on us by our own governments it's getting worse and the people who see through all the bs propaganda and misinformation flooded upon us by corporate media are getting fewer in % of population.
Like another Galaxy
I was in the demonstration there with my parents holding up as banner saying no more $ for bombing or burning. I was 6.
and I bet both you and Mommy and Daddy have Voted Democrat all your lives.
Rest in power, brother Wayne! 🕊🎸✊❤
Fascinating footage. I was 12 -- I remember watching news coverage of the convention with my dad (who wasn't pleased at the time). Anyway, it makes you ask for a definition of "free country."
Wayne Kramer MC5 and Detroit birthplace of hard rock and punk
MC5 paled in comparison to Grand Funk Railroad. I can still remember the Grand Funk riot at the Anaheim Convention Center. 10,000 people who didn't get tickets tried storming the Convention Center. Could MC5 ever do that? Nooooooo
A lost opportunity for America to turn away from corporate greed and imperialism. Things could have turned out so much better.
Better than what?
"Lost opportunity". You exaggerate.
You mean better for the Soviet Union.
The ignorance and racism that have come to the surface again. I was naive enough to think we had put it behind us, but social media is bringing it back to the forefront in a much more dangerous way!
I tried to hitchhike from the West Coast to Chicago for the convention. Thank God I never made it. Got stuck in Sparks Nevada for three days, finally said f*ck it and went to the other side of the highway and hitched back to San Fran. :-)
Would have like to hear MC5

Amazing historical footage.
Thank you for posting
We talked about this in U.S history today. Glad
Amazing how the National Guard was ready for this but not Jan 6th, 2021
The "insurrection" was welcomed.

@@Peasant_in_a_tree A parody video it is NOT. Rump and all top coordinators need to be held accountable. There was a lot of collaboration for this to "happen" the way it did.
They were white trump supporters...they only shoot at black folks and hippies wanting a end to a war. In Vietnam. The one trump dodged because his foot was sore and his daddy was a millionaire.
There was actually a TV commercial for one of those "Good Time Sounds of The 60's ( With the most obvious , played to death , hits of the day .)" collections with brief snippets on video of an unidentified band that turned out to be The MC5. Looked like it was from the '68 Democratic Convention protests .
I remember seeing it go down on tv at the time and my 10 yr old brain thinking Wtf?
This is amazing, thanks for putting this together.
Queens of the Stone Age owe everything to MC5
Jason Peter's not a patch on MC5
I think there is a whole genre of bands today that owe a lot to MC 5 & Stooges.
I'd love footage of Wayne playing along with the helicopters
The MC5 footage is included in a California proposition ad.
Live in Detroit area, sad day for me
Thank you for posting this. I was just comming home from Viet Nam When this happened.
Hey! Phil Ochs at :30!
brother wayne kramer!
Soooper MC5 footage.
GOOD JOB BROTHER WAYNE
Amazing footage. Question: what’s the name of the background music?
I wish the nat audio was there rather than the cheezzzzy music.
Long live the MC5.
Is that Phil Ochs with acoustic guitar about 30 secs in, just before the MC5 footage?
Sure looked like it.
Yeah that looked a lot like Ochs, and as far as I know he was the only other performer there besides the MC5.
Yes, it is. David Farber mentions that local bands were present too, but he says that MC5 opened the concerts and their concert didn't last more than 30 minutes. The power was cut off, if I remember.
Anyway, besides Phil and MC5 there were Peter Paul and Mary, who happened to perform twice, I think in the park.
Wow!!
The organizers of the Chicago riots knew what was likely to happen with Daley's cops, but they were not honest about the risks when promoting the event. They did not get anything like the numbers of kids they were hoping for. It could have been much worse, but it was bad enough as it was.
Any chance of getting some of the footage of you guys playing? I'm currently writing a Essay on your political and social impacts and this event features heavily in my content of writing. I would love to view some footage!
This footage is so lost, there's no MC5.
30 seconds in, did you watch it past 30 seconds?
@@nellsonogmore5938 This isn't a MC5 video. they're in it for like 3 seconds. This is random footage from the protest. Click-bait title.
i was hoping for footage of the mc5 at the dnc 1968 but i saw no footage of the mc5
0:35 they're outside playing.
Man that ad at the beginning with George Floyd really set the mood 😭
I was a HS sophomore and went down to keep my older male friends out of Viet Nam. Now in my 60s I’m still fighting for Voter’s Rights among other things. Stay in it for the long haul
you're a real one. respect ✊🏾
Voter right's for who?
🙏 thank you
1916lunt…. I was in HS also at that time. A long haired dirty reprobate as my teachers called me. Anyone in that crowd could have been me. Thank God I wised up and realized what assholes my fellow “hippies” were. The crowd was infiltrated by the FBI and the whole movement was bullshit. In your ‘60’s and still talking stupid. If I could I would go back in time and punch myself . The current protestors are useful idiots and the problem is not repubs vs dems. It is the USA against the deep state. What voter rights are you still fighting for, the only people currently not allowed to vote are those illegal immigrants and they most likely are voting anyhow. What else are you still fighting for? The right to mask up because all the sheep are doing it. I wish I could join the fight to prevent the ignorant from voting.
Fascinating footage and fantastic soundtrack! DJ shadow eat your heart out :) Is this music available to buy/download anywhere?
Nigel Smith What about DJ Shadow?
Other than he's a genius...?
I want that "Fuck the Draft" poster
And remember...trump was a draft dodger. He had a sore foot...so he played tennis instead. Mocking solders in Vietnam whilst bragging on his millionaire status.
Priceless footage.
Wayne writes dance music?
SDS days! 🔥
I still claim to be a member
My grampa told me he got stuck in traffic for hours that day, he was working like a block from there And had no idea what was goin on till he got home, and saw it on the news.
Is the electronic piece also by Wayne Kramer?
Yes. The underscore music is from Wayne's catalog of cues.
Good Work!
Wayne you're so fucking radical man
Sasha Sweet great breeders cover. Yer a babe!
at 0:30. Phil Ochs , he showed if not Seger and Nugent and the Stooges
Arvidsmith...he actually wrote a short song about unnamed people being in Detroit on the day of the Chicago police riots called Where were you in Chicago!
was this part of the FBI surveillance footage?
