Hounds of Love is one of the greatest albums to come out of the 80s. But for today’s younger generation it is a mistake to go into the album without knowing beforehand a little of what it is about. The album needs to be thought of as a vinyl record with a side 1 and side 2. Side 1 is subtitled Hounds of Love and includes the five tracks ‘Running up that Hill’ to ‘Cloudbusting’. It is the more commercial part of the album with four hit singles. Cloudbusting is based on a true story and has a wonderful music video starring Kate made up as a young boy and the father figure played by the late great Donald Sutherland. Side 2 is a concept suite of seven interrelated songs subtitled ‘The Ninth Wave’. It tells the story of a woman adrift at sea alone in the water with just a life jacket to keep her afloat while she awaits rescue. The suite begins with ‘And Dream of Sheep’ as she fears falling asleep and drowning. The following songs then take you through the stages of nightmare/hallucination, near death out of body experience and eventual rescue. These tracks can individually stand on their own musically, but lyrically will not make much sense out of the context of this storyline.
She also does something similar in Aerial. The first seven songs are standalone, called A Sea of Honey, and songs eight through sixteen are called A Sky of Honey. I feel like A Sky of Honey explores the mundanity of a day but through a romantic perspective as the first song starts off in the morning. The album then progresses through the day such as the afternoon, evening, night, and into the next morning in the euphoric title closer. Honestly a wonderful adventure.
I personally see more similarity between Kate Bush and FKA twigs in MAGDALENE, atleast in the vocals, rather than LP1 which I feel has a more R&b and ambient/electronic vibe
@@jrocciii I think he’s already reacted to Magdalene though? If not then it’s always best to start from the beginning! And I do see your point I think the same.
One of my favorite albums of all time! The second side is all a concept thing that goes together. If I recall correctly it starts with “under ice” and it’s all the perspective of a person that gets trapped under the ice in a pond and while she’s unconscious she visits a loved one “watching you without me” remembers a past life in Salem “waking the witch” looks down on the earth from space in “hello earth” and then I think she is rescued in morning fog. There are some good RUclipss out there discussing this way better than I just did. Man. So cool. Love this album. I’m so envious about you getting to listen to this for the first time. Your reactions are awesome. I bought the 12 “ single for Running Up That Hill when it came out. I was in high school. There was no way to know what it was going to sound like, I just liked the cover and something told me it would be good.
@@fylaxx thanks for that. I definitely need to revisit this! I absolutely love how much more thorough people are in their music listening. I guess it's partly thanks to the internet. In the 80s I was out there mishearing "unaware I'm tearing you asunder" as "I'm aware of Jerry Lewis thunder" and thinking I just wasn't "deep" enough to understand what that meant. 😂
"Hounds Of Love" is the perfect mixture of the commercial (side 1) and concept /experimental (side 2). BTW "Watching You Without Me" the lyrics starting with "Don't ignore me..." have been reversed. So first, Kate sings that part of the somg normally, this acts as the guide track, which is then reversed and played back to Kate, who sings along to the now reversed lyrics. Finally, Kate's singing the reversed lyrics is then reversed to arrive at the finished result. I would certainly recommend that you follow up with Kate's 4th studio album, "The Dreaming," which was the first album that she produced herself. Her 3rd album, "Never For Ever," she co-produced, and it's also well worth a listen.
- I’ve only watched S1 of “Stranger Things.” I loved it, but just never picked back up. 🤷♂️ - Great album choices in the background. - “The Big Sky” goes so hard. - Kate’s album “The Dreaming” was a huge influence for Björk. Basically Kate in general. The OG art pop kween! - Obsessed with “Waking the Witch,” but omg you mentioned “Labyrinth!” 😭👏🙌💖 - If you love this album, not to nag, but Weyes Blood. I’m telling you, lol. 🧸
eivor pálsdóttir made a very very good cover of this song, check out the music video. and she also did running up that hill live on icelandic television and she is called the nordic kate bush for a very good reason!
Loved your reaction. Second side of the album is a concept based on a woman list at sea. Once you know the back story you can better understand the writing and music. But i did live your reaction 🧡
@@whoisdonnieboi Definitely revisit. You might end up liking it. That happened to me with David Bowie. I wasn't impressed and it didn't pique my interest. I listened a couple years later and fell in love 🤷🏽♀️
Favorites - Running Up That Hill, The Big Sky, Mother Stands For Comfort, Under Ice, Watching You Without Me

I actually screamed when I saw this in my feed, you should listen to The Dreaming as well!!!
He’s not ready for that.

You should do the dreaming. That album is even more experimental
to answer your question, I remember running up that hill having around 50m streams before stranger things. It was her second biggest song I think.
Fully self-produced mind you 😍😍😍😍
and also Björk is a huge kate fan.

The entire b-side (The Ninth Wave) is about a woman who’s shipwrecked. Hence the picture on the back of the album.

Running Up That Hill is about swapping places with your partner in order to understand eachother better.
If you liked Watching you without me, then I recommend listening to Aerial. It’s basically an album full of that song (& my personal fav from her)
you need to react to the other albums (if you haven't listened) it's such a cool and profound journey

Cloudbusting is based on the book ’A book of dreams’.
I CHEERED
You have no idea what you are listening to. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT go anywhere near The Dreaming until you work this one out.
Bit dramatic
My favourite remix from this album: Under Ice (Fil Ok Remix).
Under ice is my favourite
It's still so current! My favourite remix is, Under Ice (Fil Ok Remix).
This album is a journey for sure

But i did live your reaction 🧡
That was supposed to be lost at sea. And loved your reaction.
Maybe listen to the album Aerial and The Dreaming, by Kate Bush.
I've never watched Stranger Things either.
he needs to react to the sensual world
You should react to the whole song.
You should react to patti smith especially horses and easter
This man never watching stranger things is a red flag
red flag? do you got a crush or something?
Please react to sleep token - take me back to Eden
listen to sufjan stevens illinois
Childish gambino because the internet trust
