I just wish she trained an apprentise, i think that the reason she could not train hollypaw was about hollypaws personality. (Not that brackenfur would have been better). Brightheart didn’t even react all that strongly lol. (If at all) She just kinda got reduced to a useless background character. (She didn’t even have much Dialogue from “The Power Of Three” onward.)
I feel that Jay wasn't given a full chance to train him before he chose to become a med cat, however, she should have totally gotten Hollypaw after the switch

Yes I've seen so many videos of blind and visually impaired cats doing all the the stuff normal cats do. I desperately want another blind protagonist who becomes a warrior and is properly trained. I found Jaypaws training just as frustrating as he did why stay in camp and listen to a cat tell you things you already know when you could be out there with the others actually learning?

He wouldn't be able to fight, because he can't see where cats are swinging their paws in the air, making him vulnerable. He would be useful for tracking down prey, because his other senses have improved due to his blindness to compensate. However, he would have trouble hunting the prey because he wouldn't know where he is stepping, and he could easily step on leaves and twigs that would scare the prey away. If he had stayed a warrior, I think he would have made an excellent tracker, and could have made a decent hunter if he learned where to step. But he wouldn't be able to fight, and he'd be vulnerable in battle. The main problem is, he was never given that chance. He was forced by StarClan to become a medicine cat against his will, and never learned his strengths and weaknesses as a warrior.
@@stuffshadow528 Cats fight slowly, they have brief pauses and quick breakouts when fighting. I think he'd do fine in battle. Also what? Yes he cant SEE them but he can hear and sense them alot better since hearing and sensing are basically boosted because he cant see. They should have had a medicine cat apprentice contest at the daylight gathering. Like: who can find a specific Herb fastest, or a older medicine cat could mix some herbs and the apprentices will have to try and figure out what herbs are in the mixture, that way jaypaw could be in a Contest
I feel like it would have been interesting if Hollypaw became a medicine cat, like the moment where she almost poisons her own mother, and how that would have been with her role and with Jaypaw I think Jaypaw would have cast out Hollypaw from being a medicine cat, especially beacuase it could have been right after the secret was exposed, or that Leafpool would have done it and Jaypaw would have been quite sad and disappointed in his sister and come closer to Leafpool and have no shame in her when the secret was exposed Edit: oop thanks for the likes I appreciate it a lot!
Yeah, I mean, Cinderpelt could stil hunt even with her leg. And Yellowfang was forced to become a medicine cat when she was happy as a warrior, and, if Spottedleaf hadn't pressured Jaypaw into becoming a medicine cat, he would of made a good warrior, with his sense of smell and how good he can hear.

And Leafpool did want to be a medicine cat, but, she loved Crowfeather so much that she would of given up her job, but, eventually, she let her head rule her heart. And what about Cinderpelt? Yes, she did want to be a warrior, but, Yellowfang didn't force her, she asked Cinderpelt, and she eagerly agreed. Yes, Jayfeather and Alderheart didn't choose, but, eventually, they enjoyed their jobs.
@Erin McCallister Okay, so, I just searched up if Sandstorm pressured Leafpool, but it all says no. It's possible you got that fake information from one of thos fact videos. I checked the warriors wiki on both Sandstorm's and Leafpool's pages, and it doesn't say anything. I'm pretty sure it started as a joke, then someone made it into a theory, then someone made it a fact. Leafpool was said to spend a lot of time in Cinderpelt's den. And she always seemed happy. And also, why would Sandstorm want Leafpool to be a medicine cat? Why would she pressure her? Sandstorm is shown to love her kits, being worried in The New Prophecy when Squirrelpaw runs away. And also, we can assume she was mad when it was revealed Leafpool had kits with Crowfeather, but, if Sandstorm pressured her into being a medicine cat, she has no right to be mad. Sure, she had kits with Crowfeather, but other cats have. Squirrelwhisker had a son with Eaglestorm, no cat made a scene about that, it's mentioned once in Bluestar's prophecy. And what about Bristlefrost and Rootspring? It's obvious they love each other, but no cat cares. That's why I don't believe Sandstorm pressure Leafpool. She has no reason.

I feel like Jaypaw's training was handled very poorly all he did was listen to Longtail tell him what other senses he should be using when he already knows this stuff it's not like he developed his blindness or was starting to go blind he was born blind and knew this stuff already. But to me the worst thing in this arc is when Leafpool is freaking out about Cinderpaw's leg and he asks her if it would be so bad for her to not be what she wants to be because he didn't get to she just looks at him and says "Jayfeather you are blind!" I was just as appalled as Jayfeather and had to put down the book and take a break.
Leafpool was horrible to Jayfeather. There were so many times where she would just claim that he had no right to be upset that he was forced to be a medicine cat. I guess she thinks that because Cinderpelt didn't, then he shouldn't either. But Cinderpelt would have 100% understood how he felt. Leafpool wouldn't because she wanted to be one from day 1.

You would think that even if he was Squirrelflight's biological son she would be kind to him because he is her sister's son (in canon and in the scenario of him being Squirrelflight's biological son. Yeah, all of these. Leafpool treated Jaypaw terribly because he was blind, and treated Cinderpaw with all the care in the world. As a mother (and even as an aunt!) she should at least treat him with some respect, and not invalidate his feelings because he can’t see.
I agree tbh, I was not fond at all about how she babied Cinderpaw and then never attempted to let Jaypaw do something by himself with the excuse “he’s blind so he’s not as worthy”.
@@Oakhaze EXACTLY! If she can treat a random cat that may or may not be the reincsrnation of her past mentor like a child, she should tread her *actual* child with the respect and care he deserves. Cinderpaw’s situation isn’t much better than Jaypaw’s, in the sense that they can both become Warriors with just a little bit of extra training.
I also remember that Hollypaw kind of pretended to follow along and know things, but it slowly became more and more obvious that she didn’t know what she was doing at times. She pretended to be knowledgeable for importance and recognition. Also, good job squeezing in career tips! 😂
Ableism is differently a problem in Warriors. Cinderpelt, for example, could've easily learned to use her injured leg. Sure, it would take some time and practice, but it's possible. Three legged cats get along just as well as cats with four legs. They didn't have to shove her into the medicine den. Also, Longtail could've easily stayed a warrior. Again, somebody, maybe Brightheart, would've needed to give him some extra training, but he would've gotten along just fine. Why can't we have more situations where disabled characters are given a chance to live a normal life? I think Deadfoot and Brightheart were the only guys who got a chance to follow their hopes and ambitions. Deadfoot knew that his lame foot didn't define him, and he got around perfectly. And Brightheart was just as good as any other cat, even when she lost half her face. Why can't we have more of that? Just why?
^ This!! Warriors code terrible with all of their disabled characters (except MAYBE Jayfeather, but even he didn’t need to be forced into the medicine cat role). Plus, two cats you didn’t name are Briarlight - who was confined to camp and couldn't be a warrior and was even penalized for leaving camp - and Snowkit - who literally did because he was deaf.
@@insectcat7057 Oh, yes I forgot about Snowkit and Brairlight. I have seen so many paralyzed cats, and I have seen how well the can get around. They don't even notice the difference. They move as fast as regular cats, and can even scale trees. I can sort of see. Briarlight did not need to be confined to the medicine den, as she could have continued along just as well as other cats with enough practice. Hunting might be a bit of a challenge, because of her legs dragging across the floor, but she would've figured something out. And Snowkit has basically the same opportunities. Brackenfur was willing to take the time to mentor him, which is exactly what Snowkit needed. He had his own way of hearing, which was feeling vibrations through the ground. He could've been made a warrior. All he really needed was somebody who would take the time to teach him. I haven't personally met any deaf cats, so I could be wrong when I say this, but I think cats who are hard of hearing/deaf would have improved sight and smell. Really, all you need to do is come up with an easy technic for Snowkit to catch onto. Hunting, for example, Brackenfur might come up with special signals to help Snowkit learn how to step lightly.
So in terms of being accurate to disabled cats IRL I guess it is a thing where we have to ask if it is to be applied in Warriors canon or not, like genetics and lore from the very first arc. That said, i totally agree the cat facts definitely need vast improvement in Warriors. Or at least it did, I stopped reading after DotC and tried the first couple with Alderheart and Needletail but couldn’t get into them and Sandstorm’s goodbye absolutely got me bawling even though I knew it happened and was coming, I wasn’t ready for those feels lol

I think they tried to make the disabled characters like Cinderpelt relatable, but this is what they're really doing; "Hey, kid! Your leg is 100% broken and you will never be normal again! But don't worry, we're going to plop you in this medicine den. Three legged cats aren't as mobile as four legged cats, after all. We just ruined all your hopes and plans for the future!" Is that relatable? No, I don't think so. Sandstorm's death was absolutely awful an it caught me off guard. I cried my eyes out. I had to slam the book shut and take a break for a few days. Why, Erins? Why do you have to go killing all of my favorites?
Longtail might have a problem because he relied on his eyesight from birth, and he lost it after many years of using eyesight. But Cinderpelt who was young should can continue training the warrior. Snowkit had a chance to become an apprentice, there was a cat who wanted to teach him, but he die. The potential is definitely unexploited.

This is going to sound silly, but in the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, they actually talk about how--while you may not achieve your dream job--you can always find a career/path that makes you fulfilled and happy. It reminds me of Jayfeather. While he dreamed of being a warrior, he did not achieve it...but he found something that could make him happy with his life. It's a beautiful sentiment.
That’s actually my first anime! The reason is pretty unique, it had a collaboration event with a game I played, I was nine then so I didn’t understand most of it but when I rewatched it later it was.. great. All of the characters were so well written, Mami is alone, Sayaka is broken, Kyoko is also broken, Homura is not giving up on Madoka, and Madoka doesn’t want anyone to suffer anymore. I do have a small problem about Homura, one does not simply time travel a hundred times because somelne were nice to them in school. Kyubey, too, they can’t understand human emotions so he’s so cruel.
I was so mad when Spottedleaf took Yayfeather from Dark Forest and Tigerstar. I wanted to see Yayfeather being trained by Tigerstar and being a antagonist. Not only he could've been a amazing and kinda misunderstood character but I wanna see a antagonist protagonist arc.

Exactly- spottedleaf became a med to get away from thistle, cinder got in an accident, yellowfang was just forced do to a power, LeafPool I think was the only TC med cat who wanted to be a med cat
that could be spottedleaf to some extent actually. Even if you consider SH canon, she showed genuine interest in MC things prior to actually choosing it and the ordeal with Thristle (to me at least), made sound a lot more like the issue was the violent life of a warrior rather than anything he actually did to her (SH handled the grooming situation very poorly).

When I was reading "Power of Three" I kinda knew Jay-Paw/Feather would become a medicine cat cuz of his power and connection to StarClan. Man the memories 😩
Remember when Firestar refused to give Brightheart a fully sighted apprentice because she's half blind? While i understand the point of ableism in these books, cats at a disadvantage are more vulnerable in the harsh wild and all that, i feel like the books have gotten worse about it. snowkit getting carried off by a hawk did make sense and he did struggle, but we haven't seen a deaf cat in warriors since, i dont think anyway, and it makes no sense as to why a deaf cat surrounded by a community couldn't still be a good fighter and even hunter with some practice. Deadfoot and Crookedstar rose to great positions in spite of their deformities, Hopkit's apprentice ceremony even explained that while the name was ghastly, it wasn't necessarily disrespect, also would've loved to have a Deadstar but ya know. and Stormkits mom was just an ass, so. And cloudtail helped brightheart learn how to use other cats underestimating her or being startled by her deformaty to her advantage. Meannwhile... Cinderpelt was forced to be a medicine cat cause of her hind leg, Jayfeather lost confidence in his battle abilities which makes no sense since most battles are close combat, he could've definitely learned grapples and we see him hunt later. I don't even think he had battle practice before he lost a battle (i could be wrong its been years, i just remember his complaining about the constant border trips). not to mention Longtail, a cat that had to adapt to *becoming* blind, and brightheart, a cat who was half blind, underestimated him to great frustration. I dont care much for ashfur but i almost think he should've gotten jayfeather. we know he sure af wouldn't go easy on him. Meanwhile i feel like brighthearts empathy and patience would've been good for hollyleaf, not to mention, great learning oppurtunity for Hollypaw to know not to underestimate warriors just because they have visible injuries. not to mention those training scenes would've really interesting and unique.

Regardless it's nice if they finally decided to introduce another deaf cat, with that said I havent read ALOT of the more recent books, after dawn of the clans and omen of the stars, so I appreciate the correction but I don't have much else to say on the matter as I dont know how much of a role her character has or if its a detail in passing. Not surprised she's in skyclan however, She seems like a cool cat.
Honestly, why do they need to be completely separated? Couldn't you have a part time warrior/medicine cat? Like maybe there are certain privileges or something they miss out on by being part time. But if a cat could be good at both, why do they have to stick solely to one? I think it could work to have like an assistant medicine cat, who is a warrior but is also skilled at basic medicine. They can help the main medicine cat not become overwhelmed during green cough outbreaks, or to help stabilize warriors injured outside the camp until the medicine cat arrives.
I do appreciate this video for holding a more nuanced discussion on Jayfeather's blindness. A lot of talk I hear boils down to "Jayfeather didn't get to live out his dream of being a warrior cause of his blindness and therefore his character portrayal is ableist and bad." While the book doesn't do it perfectly, I do like how you give his writing more credit than many people do.
But his writing *is* ableist. And the portrayal of this character *is* bad. The Warriors series is very ableist. This isn't new. He can 100% be a warrior/hunter but the books love to throw disabled characters under the bus.

Look it up, there are many videos of blind or half-blind cats doing things completely normal cats can do, because of their whiskers, sense of smell, and hearing. Being forced to be a medicine cat even though he is a fully capable cat IS ableist. Saying ‘it’s not’ doesn’t magically make it not ableist. It just is.

I agree. I think people are rushing to call the writing ableist, but it really isn't. If it was actually ableist, Jaypaw wouldn't have been given the chance to try being a warrior at all. Also, he wasn't forced to become a medicine cat-- he chose to become one, not only because of his blindness, but because of his dream-walking gift and his talent with herbs.

I wish we had an evil medicine cat who used their role of helping others to help themselves. They get to choose who lives and dies, and talk to starclan or the dark forest behind other living cats’ backs.
This is why in my Clowders, Healers are trained as Scouts, placeholder replacement for warriors, and Healers at the same time so they know how to hunt, fight and heal as good as their Clowdermates do. I even have a blind General and a deaf Lieutenant. Not in the same Clowder, but it's still cool. I feel like Hollyleaf would have been an okay medicine cat, with Jayfeather's help on the sidelines. Also. Brightheart deserved so much more than she got.
I directly fell in love with jay and holy in the book I was so glad that jay becomes one of the best medicine cat and holy one of my favourite female characters with squirrelflight leafpool and every other female characters
Spoilers for power of three I think if hollyleaf had been apart of the three maybe she would have stayed as a medicine cat and jayfeather stayed a warrior. Hollyleaf might have had healing powers. I mean I don't know maybe. So this is how I thought the books could have gone. Jaykit hollykit and lionkit go after the foxes. And Jaykit and hollykit fall down the cliff. Hollykits fall is stopped by jaykit. Jaykit then starts to Yowl in pain. Hollykit hears a voice and it tells he to lick the thorns out of Jaykits eyes so she does. The voice was spottedleaf. Then the thorns fall out. Jaypaws eyes are just fine now. He also now has the best eyesight because hollykits power is to heal. Leafpool sees what hollykit did and praises her for her quick thinking. Now hollypaw jaypaw and lionpaw are apprenticed jaypaw to brackenfur lionpaw to ashfur and hollypaw to leafpool. Hollypaw is good at being a medicine cat and she likes it to. Also her powers help her to but her powers have a limit. She can't bring back the dead or heal major wounds. She's able to soothe them though. Also the herbs she touch become better at there job. Jaypaw still has the same powers. And he finds out about the prophecy. and he walks in the medicine cats dreams from the camp. Then ashfur tries to kill them and then the secret is revealed. And ashfur. Lets them go. Then lionblaze is by the river and ashfur shows up he then taunts lionblaze until lionblaze can't stand it and leaps at ashfur. They fight until lionblaze kills ashfur. then at the gathering hollyleaf tells everyone about leafpool. Out of fear lionblaze runs into the tunnels. Every thing sorta goes like this. Also I thought maybe dovewing could be the fourth cat but maybe not. And maybe she and ivypool both train in the dark forest. Also I like this version because if you think about it you'll see that there eyes match there powers Lionblazes eyes are orange and orange is close to red and red usually stand for fighting and stuff like that Hollyleafs eyes are green for Healing And jayfeathers eyes are blue for seeing
though, i DO think that jayfeather (or jaypaw in this case) was forced into the position of medicine cat. but in then end he learned to accept it and actually came to love his job, even if some cats will forever be annoying with their small pains or over reactions.
Hollypaw really wanted to be a medicine cat and there aren’t many cats that can say that. And she was robbed of it lol Though I would’ve loved a plot in which she insists on being medicine cat apprentice and it goes on so long that she does learn important skills and whatnot and then something happens and she has to become a deputy and later Hollystar. Medicine cat to leader would’ve been epic and Holly would’ve been best pick for it IMO.
At 7:28 the third step: "Don't be like Spottedleaf, be like Brightheart or Firestar" got me, I'm it's not a joke, but I just find it funny how the sentence was made.
Something I've just thought about... we've had 2 blind cats in thunderclan (as far as I can remember), being longtail and Jayfeather. Longtail retiring early when his sight failing and Jayfeather feeling like he needs to be a medicine cat... one cat I dont see many people mention is Brokenstar. After being blinded he still participated in the siege in thunderclan camp. Granted he was able to surprise his guard but I also remember him still being intimidating and formidable. Imagine what he couldve done if he had been trained to fight while blind instead of confined as prisoner. Of course Brokentail is a bad guy but still... most the cats in thunderclan were still intimidated. I feel like had they actually given Jayfeather a solid effort he couldve been a great warrior and even used people underestimating him cause of his disability to his advantage, like brightheart.

"Jaypaw choose to be a medicine cat" yeah, after being insulted, talked down and coerced to believe he couldn't be a warrior. Sure, things turn out alright in the end but that doesn't excuse what he went through to get there. Who knows, maybe I'm letting my own disability as a hard of hearing person cloud my judgement. Im just saying, they didnt even try training Jaypaw as a warrior and we he "accepted" what he knew all along, I felt sick and had to put down the book.
If someone is actively make their own lives worse because they are in a job that isn't working out (e.g. the hours are terrible, pay is terrible, they don't enjoy it or they aren't good at it and aren't getting anywhere but are being completely fixated on it to the detriment of their life) but they refuse to leave then you need to be spottedleaf. Some people do not come to these conclusions on their own and need a push. They can choose whether to listen but sometimes people need to hear the truth.
The disadvantage of blindness would just be to much to overcome in a battle iam afraid. Cats like tigerstar saw their attacker head on, and still got merced, and jayfeather is certainly not the fierce warrior tigerclaw was.
@@Parasolhyena well, using common logic, they would simply be used for hunting purposes. However, using Erin Hunter logic, they would be front line warriors getting killed at the start of every battle.
Although they would be at a disadvantage in a battle, blind cats can get around fine and could still hunt, patrol, and do other warrior duties (I'm saying this as a person who literally owns a fully blind cat)
i wish jayfeather had been a warrior it’s not that i don’t like him as a medicine cat it’s just he could have become a warrior he’s blind so it would have been a lot more interesting for him to figure it out than him being a medicine cat because it’s his destiny i wish he had trained in the dark forest because it would have been interesting to see him learn how to fight with eyes going to without eyes cinderpelt didn’t do what she was destined to and she lived happily so i mean i don’t like seeing jayfeather do something like that because they where not experimenting with him like they did with his mentor on how to hunt and fight while blind

Yes I've seen so many videos of blind and visually impaired cats doing all the the stuff normal cats do. I desperately want another blind protagonist who becomes a warrior and is properly trained. I found Jaypaws training just as frustrating as he did why stay in camp and listen to a cat tell you things you already know when you could be out there with the others actually learning?

Even if he has health problems that disadvantage him, it’s really gross he was pressured to be a medicine cat when he didn’t want to.
He wouldn't be able to fight, because he can't see where cats are swinging their paws in the air, making him vulnerable. He would be useful for tracking down prey, because his other senses have improved due to his blindness to compensate. However, he would have trouble hunting the prey because he wouldn't know where he is stepping, and he could easily step on leaves and twigs that would scare the prey away. If he had stayed a warrior, I think he would have made an excellent tracker, and could have made a decent hunter if he learned where to step. But he wouldn't be able to fight, and he'd be vulnerable in battle. The main problem is, he was never given that chance. He was forced by StarClan to become a medicine cat against his will, and never learned his strengths and weaknesses as a warrior.

Yes he cant SEE them but he can hear and sense them alot better since hearing and sensing are basically boosted because he cant see. They can, they may have a bit of trouble and checking around but thats olny for housecats. Jayfeather could definitley catch a mouse by scenting and hearing it, twigs and leaves cant be snapped or crunched as easily as you think, cat paws are very light especially a young teen/adult cat apprentices. Blind cats can navigate around still

They should have had a medicine cat apprentice contest at the daylight gathering. Like: who can find a specific Herb fastest, or a older medicine cat could mix some herbs and the apprentices will have to try and figure out what herbs are in the mixture, that way jaypaw could be in a Contest

I feel like it would have been interesting if Hollypaw became a medicine cat, like the moment where she almost poisons her own mother, and how that would have been with her role and with Jaypaw
I think Jaypaw would have cast out Hollypaw from being a medicine cat, especially beacuase it could have been right after the secret was exposed, or that Leafpool would have done it and Jaypaw would have been quite sad and disappointed in his sister and come closer to Leafpool and have no shame in her when the secret was exposed

Yeah, I mean, Cinderpelt could stil hunt even with her leg. And Yellowfang was forced to become a medicine cat when she was happy as a warrior, and, if Spottedleaf hadn't pressured Jaypaw into becoming a medicine cat, he would of made a good warrior, with his sense of smell and how good he can hear.

Yes, she did want to be a warrior, but, Yellowfang didn't force her, she asked Cinderpelt, and she eagerly agreed. Yes, Jayfeather and Alderheart didn't choose, but, eventually, they enjoyed their jobs.
@Erin McCallister Okay, so, I just searched up if Sandstorm pressured Leafpool, but it all says no. It's possible you got that fake information from one of thos fact videos. I checked the warriors wiki on both Sandstorm's and Leafpool's pages, and it doesn't say anything. I'm pretty sure it started as a joke, then someone made it into a theory, then someone made it a fact. Leafpool was said to spend a lot of time in Cinderpelt's den. And she always seemed happy. And also, why would Sandstorm want Leafpool to be a medicine cat? Why would she pressure her? Sandstorm is shown to love her kits, being worried in The New Prophecy when Squirrelpaw runs away. And also, we can assume she was mad when it was revealed Leafpool had kits with Crowfeather, but, if Sandstorm pressured her into being a medicine cat, she has no right to be mad. Sure, she had kits with Crowfeather, but other cats have. Squirrelwhisker had a son with Eaglestorm, no cat made a scene about that, it's mentioned once in Bluestar's prophecy. And what about Bristlefrost and Rootspring? It's obvious they love each other, but no cat cares. That's why I don't believe Sandstorm pressure Leafpool. She has no reason.

I feel like Jaypaw's training was handled very poorly all he did was listen to Longtail tell him what other senses he should be using when he already knows this stuff it's not like he developed his blindness or was starting to go blind he was born blind and knew this stuff already. But to me the worst thing in this arc is when Leafpool is freaking out about Cinderpaw's leg and he asks her if it would be so bad for her to not be what she wants to be because he didn't get to she just looks at him and says "Jayfeather you are blind!" I was just as appalled as Jayfeather and had to put down the book and take a break.
Leafpool was horrible to Jayfeather. There were so many times where she would just claim that he had no right to be upset that he was forced to be a medicine cat. I guess she thinks that because Cinderpelt didn't, then he shouldn't either. But Cinderpelt would have 100% understood how he felt. Leafpool wouldn't because she wanted to be one from day 1.

Yeah, all of these. Leafpool treated Jaypaw terribly because he was blind, and treated Cinderpaw with all the care in the world. As a mother (and even as an aunt!) she should at least treat him with some respect, and not invalidate his feelings because he can’t see.
I agree tbh, I was not fond at all about how she babied Cinderpaw and then never attempted to let Jaypaw do something by himself with the excuse “he’s blind so he’s not as worthy”.
@@Oakhaze EXACTLY! If she can treat a random cat that may or may not be the reincsrnation of her past mentor like a child, she should tread her *actual* child with the respect and care he deserves. Cinderpaw’s situation isn’t much better than Jaypaw’s, in the sense that they can both become Warriors with just a little bit of extra training.
I also remember that Hollypaw kind of pretended to follow along and know things, but it slowly became more and more obvious that she didn’t know what she was doing at times. She pretended to be knowledgeable for importance and recognition.

Ableism is differently a problem in Warriors. Cinderpelt, for example, could've easily learned to use her injured leg. Sure, it would take some time and practice, but it's possible. Three legged cats get along just as well as cats with four legs. They didn't have to shove her into the medicine den. Also, Longtail could've easily stayed a warrior. Again, somebody, maybe Brightheart, would've needed to give him some extra training, but he would've gotten along just fine.
Why can't we have more situations where disabled characters are given a chance to live a normal life? I think Deadfoot and Brightheart were the only guys who got a chance to follow their hopes and ambitions. Deadfoot knew that his lame foot didn't define him, and he got around perfectly. And Brightheart was just as good as any other cat, even when she lost half her face. Why can't we have more of that? Just why?
^ This!! Warriors code terrible with all of their disabled characters (except MAYBE Jayfeather, but even he didn’t need to be forced into the medicine cat role). Plus, two cats you didn’t name are Briarlight - who was confined to camp and couldn't be a warrior and was even penalized for leaving camp - and Snowkit - who literally did because he was deaf.
@@insectcat7057 Oh, yes I forgot about Snowkit and Brairlight. I have seen so many paralyzed cats, and I have seen how well the can get around. They don't even notice the difference. They move as fast as regular cats, and can even scale trees. I can sort of see. Briarlight did not need to be confined to the medicine den, as she could have continued along just as well as other cats with enough practice. Hunting might be a bit of a challenge, because of her legs dragging across the floor, but she would've figured something out. And Snowkit has basically the same opportunities. Brackenfur was willing to take the time to mentor him, which is exactly what Snowkit needed. He had his own way of hearing, which was feeling vibrations through the ground. He could've been made a warrior. All he really needed was somebody who would take the time to teach him. I haven't personally met any deaf cats, so I could be wrong when I say this, but I think cats who are hard of hearing/deaf would have improved sight and smell. Really, all you need to do is come up with an easy technic for Snowkit to catch onto. Hunting, for example, Brackenfur might come up with special signals to help Snowkit learn how to step lightly.
So in terms of being accurate to disabled cats IRL I guess it is a thing where we have to ask if it is to be applied in Warriors canon or not, like genetics and lore from the very first arc.
That said, i totally agree the cat facts definitely need vast improvement in Warriors.
Or at least it did, I stopped reading after DotC and tried the first couple with Alderheart and Needletail but couldn’t get into them and Sandstorm’s goodbye absolutely got me bawling even though I knew it happened and was coming, I wasn’t ready for those feels lol

Sandstorm's death was absolutely awful an it caught me off guard. I cried my eyes out. I had to slam the book shut and take a break for a few days. Why, Erins? Why do you have to go killing all of my favorites?
Longtail might have a problem because he relied on his eyesight from birth, and he lost it after many years of using eyesight. But Cinderpelt who was young should can continue training the warrior. Snowkit had a chance to become an apprentice, there was a cat who wanted to teach him, but he die. The potential is definitely unexploited.

This is going to sound silly, but in the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, they actually talk about how--while you may not achieve your dream job--you can always find a career/path that makes you fulfilled and happy. It reminds me of Jayfeather. While he dreamed of being a warrior, he did not achieve it...but he found something that could make him happy with his life. It's a beautiful sentiment.
That’s actually my first anime! The reason is pretty unique, it had a collaboration event with a game I played, I was nine then so I didn’t understand most of it but when I rewatched it later it was.. great.
All of the characters were so well written, Mami is alone, Sayaka is broken, Kyoko is also broken, Homura is not giving up on Madoka, and Madoka doesn’t want anyone to suffer anymore. I do have a small problem about Homura, one does not simply time travel a hundred times because somelne were nice to them in school. Kyubey, too, they can’t understand human emotions so he’s so cruel.
I was so mad when Spottedleaf took Yayfeather from Dark Forest and Tigerstar. I wanted to see Yayfeather being trained by Tigerstar and being a antagonist. Not only he could've been a amazing and kinda misunderstood character but I wanna see a antagonist protagonist arc.

While i understand the point of ableism in these books, cats at a disadvantage are more vulnerable in the harsh wild and all that, i feel like the books have gotten worse about it.
snowkit getting carried off by a hawk did make sense and he did struggle, but we haven't seen a deaf cat in warriors since, i dont think anyway, and it makes no sense as to why a deaf cat surrounded by a community couldn't still be a good fighter and even hunter with some practice.
Deadfoot and Crookedstar rose to great positions in spite of their deformities, Hopkit's apprentice ceremony even explained that while the name was ghastly, it wasn't necessarily disrespect, also would've loved to have a Deadstar but ya know. and Stormkits mom was just an ass, so. And cloudtail helped brightheart learn how to use other cats underestimating her or being startled by her deformaty to her advantage.
Meannwhile...
Cinderpelt was forced to be a medicine cat cause of her hind leg, Jayfeather lost confidence in his battle abilities which makes no sense since most battles are close combat, he could've definitely learned grapples and we see him hunt later. I don't even think he had battle practice before he lost a battle (i could be wrong its been years, i just remember his complaining about the constant border trips). not to mention Longtail, a cat that had to adapt to *becoming* blind, and brightheart, a cat who was half blind, underestimated him to great frustration. I dont care much for ashfur but i almost think he should've gotten jayfeather. we know he sure af wouldn't go easy on him.
Meanwhile i feel like brighthearts empathy and patience would've been good for hollyleaf, not to mention, great learning oppurtunity for Hollypaw to know not to underestimate warriors just because they have visible injuries. not to mention those training scenes would've really interesting and unique.

Regardless it's nice if they finally decided to introduce another deaf cat, with that said I havent read ALOT of the more recent books, after dawn of the clans and omen of the stars, so I appreciate the correction but I don't have much else to say on the matter as I dont know how much of a role her character has or if its a detail in passing.

Honestly, why do they need to be completely separated? Couldn't you have a part time warrior/medicine cat? Like maybe there are certain privileges or something they miss out on by being part time. But if a cat could be good at both, why do they have to stick solely to one? I think it could work to have like an assistant medicine cat, who is a warrior but is also skilled at basic medicine. They can help the main medicine cat not become overwhelmed during green cough outbreaks, or to help stabilize warriors injured outside the camp until the medicine cat arrives.

I do appreciate this video for holding a more nuanced discussion on Jayfeather's blindness. A lot of talk I hear boils down to "Jayfeather didn't get to live out his dream of being a warrior cause of his blindness and therefore his character portrayal is ableist and bad." While the book doesn't do it perfectly, I do like how you give his writing more credit than many people do.
But his writing *is* ableist. And the portrayal of this character *is* bad. The Warriors series is very ableist. This isn't new. He can 100% be a warrior/hunter but the books love to throw disabled characters under the bus.

For cats, being blind is not that big of a deal. Look it up, there are many videos of blind or half-blind cats doing things completely normal cats can do, because of their whiskers, sense of smell, and hearing. It would be like a human losing their sense of smell. Not that big of a deal. There is no reason they have to force him to be a medicine cat.
Being forced to be a medicine cat even though he is a fully capable cat IS ableist. Saying ‘it’s not’ doesn’t magically make it not ableist. It just is.

I agree. I think people are rushing to call the writing ableist, but it really isn't. If it was actually ableist, Jaypaw wouldn't have been given the chance to try being a warrior at all. Also, he wasn't forced to become a medicine cat-- he chose to become one, not only because of his blindness, but because of his dream-walking gift and his talent with herbs.

My favorite part of the book was the idea of a daylight gathering. Why don’t the cats have more festivals and celebrations?
This is why in my Clowders, Healers are trained as Scouts, placeholder replacement for warriors, and Healers at the same time so they know how to hunt, fight and heal as good as their Clowdermates do. I even have a blind General and a deaf Lieutenant. Not in the same Clowder, but it's still cool.
I feel like Hollyleaf would have been an okay medicine cat, with Jayfeather's help on the sidelines. Also. Brightheart deserved so much more than she got.

I think if hollyleaf had been apart of the three maybe she would have stayed as a medicine cat and jayfeather stayed a warrior. Hollyleaf might have had healing powers. I mean I don't know maybe.
So this is how I thought the books could have gone.
Jaykit hollykit and lionkit go after the foxes. And Jaykit and hollykit fall down the cliff. Hollykits fall is stopped by jaykit. Jaykit then starts to
Yowl in pain. Hollykit hears a voice and it tells he to lick the thorns out of Jaykits eyes so she does. The voice was spottedleaf. Then the thorns fall out. Jaypaws eyes are just fine now. He also now has the best eyesight because hollykits power is to heal. Leafpool sees what hollykit did and praises her for her quick thinking. Now hollypaw jaypaw and lionpaw are apprenticed jaypaw to brackenfur lionpaw to ashfur and hollypaw to leafpool. Hollypaw is good at being a medicine cat and she likes it to. Also her powers help her to but her powers have a limit. She can't bring back the dead or heal major wounds. She's able to soothe them though. Also the herbs she touch become better at there job. Jaypaw still has the same powers. And he finds out about the prophecy. and he walks in the medicine cats dreams from the camp.
Then ashfur tries to kill them and then the secret is revealed. And ashfur. Lets them go. Then lionblaze is by the river and ashfur shows up he then taunts lionblaze until lionblaze can't stand it and leaps at ashfur. They fight until lionblaze kills ashfur. then at the gathering hollyleaf tells everyone about leafpool. Out of fear lionblaze runs into the tunnels.
Every thing sorta goes like this.
Also I thought maybe dovewing could be the fourth cat but maybe not.
And maybe she and ivypool both train in the dark forest.
Also I like this version because if you think about it you'll see that there eyes match there powers
Lionblazes eyes are orange and orange is close to red and red usually stand for fighting and stuff like that

though, i DO think that jayfeather (or jaypaw in this case) was forced into the position of medicine cat. but in then end he learned to accept it and actually came to love his job, even if some cats will forever be annoying with their small pains or over reactions.

Though I would’ve loved a plot in which she insists on being medicine cat apprentice and it goes on so long that she does learn important skills and whatnot and then something happens and she has to become a deputy and later Hollystar. Medicine cat to leader would’ve been epic and Holly would’ve been best pick for it IMO.

i've literally always seen hollyleaf as a medicine cat even though i know it's jayfeather canonically
Something I've just thought about... we've had 2 blind cats in thunderclan (as far as I can remember), being longtail and Jayfeather. Longtail retiring early when his sight failing and Jayfeather feeling like he needs to be a medicine cat... one cat I dont see many people mention is Brokenstar. After being blinded he still participated in the siege in thunderclan camp. Granted he was able to surprise his guard but I also remember him still being intimidating and formidable. Imagine what he couldve done if he had been trained to fight while blind instead of confined as prisoner.
Of course Brokentail is a bad guy but still... most the cats in thunderclan were still intimidated. I feel like had they actually given Jayfeather a solid effort he couldve been a great warrior and even used people underestimating him cause of his disability to his advantage, like brightheart.
Can we talk about how apparently it's against the medicine cat code for a medicine cat/apprentice to become a warrior??? Just more evidence that the codes are dumb

Sure, things turn out alright in the end but that doesn't excuse what he went through to get there. Who knows, maybe I'm letting my own disability as a hard of hearing person cloud my judgement. Im just saying, they didnt even try training Jaypaw as a warrior and we he "accepted" what he knew all along, I felt sick and had to put down the book.

If someone is actively make their own lives worse because they are in a job that isn't working out (e.g. the hours are terrible, pay is terrible, they don't enjoy it or they aren't good at it and aren't getting anywhere but are being completely fixated on it to the detriment of their life) but they refuse to leave then you need to be spottedleaf. Some people do not come to these conclusions on their own and need a push. They can choose whether to listen but sometimes people need to hear the truth.

The disadvantage of blindness would just be to much to overcome in a battle iam afraid. Cats like tigerstar saw their attacker head on, and still got merced, and jayfeather is certainly not the fierce warrior tigerclaw was.
I've always wondered though what if a cat is a stunning hunter but a garbage fighter
@@Parasolhyena well, using common logic, they would simply be used for hunting purposes. However, using Erin Hunter logic, they would be front line warriors getting killed at the start of every battle.
Although they would be at a disadvantage in a battle, blind cats can get around fine and could still hunt, patrol, and do other warrior duties (I'm saying this as a person who literally owns a fully blind cat)
uh…blind cats can absolutely still fight. there are videos out there of blind cats fighting (albeit play fighting but it still counts) and doing fine.

i wish jayfeather had been a warrior it’s not that i don’t like him as a medicine cat it’s just he could have become a warrior he’s blind so it would have been a lot more interesting for him to figure it out than him being a medicine cat because it’s his destiny i wish he had trained in the dark forest because it would have been interesting to see him learn how to fight with eyes going to without eyes cinderpelt didn’t do what she was destined to and she lived happily so i mean i don’t like seeing jayfeather do something like that because they where not experimenting with him like they did with his mentor on how to hunt and fight while blind
