- Is the Mamiya RZ 110mm f2 8 Sekor Lens the best lens ever made for medium format cameras? But more importantly, how does it hold up on a modern day digital camera?

What I find ironic is that those of us that were the last graduates of photography schools in film and at the birth of digital, had spent a minor fortune to get the Mamiya camera systems or the Hassleblads and yet the group after us, cries about only $1000 for a single lens. It amazes me that we took so much care of our craft for our own sake and not for others to invest what we knew was the best equipment, even if it was expensive it was worth to see through and develop images using what is and will be the last of the great glass designed by the best engineers and photographers. Now I see professionals complaining unless they are given equipment by corporations to promote only and keep. It amazes me how some professionals sell their credibility to cheaply. Now this channel is the true exception, it is the one place to get the absolute best advice and honest feedback. This is rare among professionals and anyone that views those channels should really pay attention and appreciate the time and advice that this photographer is giving you. Only at the top schools in Art and design did I ever see such willingness to share and help foster creativity and inspire a new generation.
“Let me move my trolley ‘out yer way” Native accent creeping in!! I’ve waited so long to hear it
haha, it had to slip out eventually
Nice comparison! The 90mm Sekor appears a slight bit superior to the 110 mm one. It came as a shock to me though that the Zeiss was softer. I own a bunch of Zeiss Milvus lenses (mostly the newer formulas like the 1.4/85, but also the 2/135) and they are all pin-sharp, nothing like the image you present here shows. I realized it was the focus. The lenses were not focused at the same spot, and where the Zeiss was focused, I'd say it was sharper than the 90 mm - the problem is though that to really compare the sharpness, the lenses would have to be focused at the same spot, which they were not. What I reflect over also (and I know you don't make much of a thing out of it) is that at f/11 with the 5DsR on the Milvuses, you are already in the diffraction land - that to me could explain the softness of the Milvus lens. If you wish to keep it sharp where you focus, you probably want to be no narrower than f/7.1 or f/8 at the most with the 5DsR. That's what my experience says.
Here in Sweden the 110mm 2.8 Sekor-lens is hyped up as hell and goes for over $600.
If my memory is correct ,when I bought my Mamaiya RZ ( in the '90s ) . You can choose the 90mm or 110mm as a kit . The 90mm kit cost more because it was the" better lens " . I love all my RZ lenses 50mm, 110mm and 140mm .
I feel like an old nanna that you're explaining things to. it's welcoming and friendly 😂
Solid content as I too and constantly eying the Mamiya lenses
Welcome to it. It's a beautiful lens and I'm tempted to get your adapter.
this lens deserve more than this subject ... focus fall off and subject separation can't be judged with this subject
Nice video. I see you use quite some RZ67 mamiya Sekor lenses for your work . ¿how did you adapt them to the Cambo adapter so you can use the apeture ring with an open leaf shutter? Dis you modify anything in the lenses? Thank you.
Great stuff Scott. In my view the Mamiya Sekor 90mm f3.5 is slightly sharper than the 110mm f2.8. Plus, the 90mm focal length, (just slightly wider, but, in fact, almost a perfect standard for the Mamiya RZ67), provides a more versatile lens. And, for a digital full frame 24x36 cams the 90mm makes a perfect portrait lens. Keep your 90mm lens, instead of wasting money on the 110mm. Cheers!
My dream setup: GFX, actus, this lens.
I'm looking from a color calibrated 1080p pro monitor; 90 and 110 look almost indistinguishable; if I've to pick one, from what i can see on my system with my eyes, the 90 seems to have 0,000001% more detail, so I'd go with it because is also way cheaper, so double victory. But they're so close that, even if 110 would have been the one 0,00001%, sharper, I'd still pick the 90 due to price difference.
yeah that was my rational for sticking with the 90. Price is a really important factor.
Looks like the 110 whilst sharper seems to bloom more on highlights.
Not worth the £1000 with already owning the 90.
I use 127mm F/3.5 KL on Sony a7r3. Its better than any "full frame" lens I tried with.
Can someone tell me the name of the system Scott mentions at 1:21? Love the camera to lens mounting system
Looks like the blue wave lengths came out darker in the middle shot..
hi, very good big hole of ligth, rear optic. can you test on EOS R?
I believe its the same sensor size so will look pretty much identical.
I must say I don’t think it’s worth it unless you want the compression, however you have the 127mm. How does that compare in detail? I have a 150mm which is to long and would consider selling that for the 127. I have the cambo and got the 50mm after seeing your videos as I shot on a 90mm. I got the cambo to use with the 90mm Rodenstock from my 5x4 which is sharp and detailed. Something you should think about trying at some point as you can get the digitar lenses, which would blow everything out the water but again they are 1k+ on eBay.
I personally love my Mamiya RZ 140 mm macro
I love the compression on the 110mm but as you say the difference in iq is not worth 1000pounds more. I prefer the flatter look of the older lens but sometimes the coatings really do the job in maintaining detail. Love the video and I am super interested to see more of the sort.
Hey !
Nice video man !
I'm interested by your build, how did you get your mamiyas lenses on the Canon ? could you help me find out ?
Thanks a lot !
A question: why would you compare them at f11? Are you comparing diffraction? What exactly can you see at f 11? Why not compare them at f22 then?:) makes me want to ask a question how can one choose the most effective aperture for a particular lens? Don’t matter whether table top or beauty, it’s an optical design…
These lenses reach peak optical performance at f11 and thats also closest to what we use in the studio.
@@TinHouseStudioUK mate, sorry, but I would have to strongly disagree. If the widest aperture on your lens would be 5.6, like in some largeformat lenses, then yes f11 would be the aperture to study lens capabilities. But, if you would test these on an optical bench, a special tool to study lens characteristics and performance. you would notice that lenses you’ve tested would give you about same results at f11. Sorry, not being a smart ass, that’s just a common misconception.
Well CZJ lenses for Pentacon 6, are almost all f2. 8, 65mm f2. 8, 80mm f2. 8,120mm f2. 8 and 180mm f2. 8...only 50mm and Zodiac 35mm are slow
MORE FILM PLEASE :)
thank you!
Welcome!
Capture One has lens corrections built in for most modern lens - but what happens with these older lenses?
There isn’t an option for older lenses sadly
@@TinHouseStudioUKIt might be worth asking them as there are a lot of these lenses around. Corrections might influence some of the comparisons you have done. Get support to ask David Grover for you.
hi! amazing video. may I ask how you adapted the mamiya lenses to your canon? thank you!
What about print output differences?
Not a clue, ive not actually printed an image for about 10 years and I dont think that commercial printing is really something to admire as its all about size rather than quality. I do one day want to own a good printer for personal use though so it will be something I look at in the future when I have the option to.
Do you think that a fotodiox tilt shift adapter with a 90mm Mamiya on an Eos R would be a viable option compared to a 100mm macro or is the cambo the way to go.
Geht natürlich im KB aber es ist Verschwendung, gebaut und gerechnet für Mittelformat 6x7, ist wie fahren mit 600 Ps in der Fußgängerzone
Btw how do you control the aperture and shutter on the lens?
@@opattison how it it connected to the Canon via the Actus? Is there an adapter for this?
@@opattison I am familiar with Actus, Mamiya and Canon. How is the shutter triggered? How is the shutter speed set? Is there an electronic connection between the Canon and the Mamiya. I am not aware of one. I know Fotodiox has one, but it has its own helicoid and not the bellows to focus. Or the lens set for correct aperture, leave the shutter open. And expose by electronic shutter on the Canon.
The actus is basically a monorail with bellow and you can get a range of adaptors for. I have the 35mm rear plate with a Sony mount. Scott with have the same rear plate just with a Canon mount attached. You can get hassled,Fuji, phase one, Nikon, you just need the right rear plate & mount. I then have the Mamiya lens plate for the front as Will Scott. Again you can get Canon, hasselblad, phase one, list goes on. I also have a Copal 0 plate for my 5x4 lens. Basically you can stick nearly any lens on the front and most bodies/digibacks on the back. I hope this helps.
No electronic point. You set the aperture manually on the lens and set your shutter speed on the body then trigger the shot as normal. You won’t have any lens info in the meta data nor any lens profiles automatically applied in raw. However with 35mm you are only using the sweet middle part of the image circle of the lens which is designed for much larger formats. So you don’t really need profiles, not that I’ve found anyway.
@jp jast I know this, but the Actus will not pass through the electronics. From what the others have said, I guess Scott shoots it manually. With no connection between the lens and body.
the answer is always yes. 😂
