@@five12man Think it was only found a couple years ago, but in the 1.0 version of the game, having more bricks on your kart improves your acceleration and top speed slightly. This is fun because it lets speedrunners build custom karts. The frame used also affects the bouncing (like when coming out of a warp on a slope) and everyone has their preferences.
Man this takes me back to my childhood days. And i have to say i am absolutely dumbfounded on the strat for race 3-1! I am a little bit sad that a lot of the tracks just come down to going back and forth along the starting line, but then again the tracks you do actually race look masterfully done! Thanks for the entertaining watch!
Thank you for the really nice comment! The game is still played without the back and forth driving, check out the glitchless leaderboards at speedrun .com/lr (without the space) if you want to see some of it.
I have no idea why I looked up a run for this game but I used to play it a ton as a kid. Funny how many of these old racing games have the exploit of going backwards through the finish line to complete laps haha. Great run!
As a child I thought "Can't I just turn around and drive over the line again?" on the second track, drove only a small circle and then thought "Damn, they thought of that" and now I find out the literally only thought like 30 feet further down the road than a 5 year old did :|
Basically it has nothing to do with how far you have driven but more like the code once detected you have collect the item on the track it assumes you have completed the lap.
Wow! 😮 I thought they would have known to put more checkpoints in then just the one right after the finish line.😂 2:48 I don't think I would have ever discovered this funny little trick.
Thank you! I also played this a lot during my childhood too, but I never knew about any of these glitches back then. If you want to see a speedrun without glitches, check out @green_9748. The game does surprisingly hold up today, in enjoyment anyway. You should give it a try again if you have the time!
In Asteriod Rally maybe you could've saved some seconds with the UFO exploit where if you activate a shield right when the UFO activates its ray it pushes you forward at high speed instead of pulling you back. Edit: I explained the exploit cause I noticed you used the shield before making contact with the UFO instead of pulling the glitch. But maybe you already knew it.
@@Ekmos- There was no need for more checkpoints in the original 1999 PC version. Driving backwards over the finish in that version discredits the lap. It is only in the N64 and the second PC version in 2001 (which is just a port of the N64 version) that this unintended feature is present.
To this day i'm still convinced that all cars you build have the same stats and I think you being able to get the world records with your silly tank cars does rather seem to prove that
@@Corn-Flakes1000 I thought that only existed in the original 99 release of the game? The warp sound from the beginning of the video implies this is a 2001 re-release version of the game, which is believed to have slightly different physics.

Really cool, I think I might go try some of those tricks myself now!)) Never heard about those exploits and don't think I ever used handbrake in this game 🤔 Also, I love how on tracks with *wrong way* exploit the game has no problem with you being apparently on sixth place despite being laps ahead🤣
I had seen the glitch on Magma Moon Marathon before trying to speedrun this game, but the others were totally new to me. You should definitively give the game a try, it's pretty fun, though the glitches are only possible on the 2001 PC release and Nintendo 64 version.

Just stumbled upon this having not run the game in almost a decade - I can't believe people are beating my 39 by so much now! And I can't believe I missed the laps skips in batlord and rocket racer :D Nice job on the run! Edit: What's with the accel + brake when you exit warps? Does that maintain momentum better or something? And does going neutral during a warp make it go further? Edit 2: Nevermind, I just watched the guide and learned about snap slides!
Thank you very much! In the last two years we've found that you can do the lap skips on every track, but we've only been able to do it faster on Ice Planet Pathway (not in this run, we found out it's faster afterwards. It's also very difficult with the AI opponents), Knightmare-Athon and Rocket Racer. Pressing accelerate and brake at the same time makes it so you accelerate/decelerate slower. So by doing it after any kind of boost keeps the higher speed for longer. Not pressing anything during the warp makes it go further at some places, but for the most part it actually makes the warp shorter. I didn't know it at the time. The reason I didn't press anything is because there is nothing that slows you down in the air. So by pressing accelerate in the air, you're actually slowing yourself down (accelerate takes you toward your normal top speed. When you use any kind of boost, you're above the normal top speed, so accelerating will actually slow you down to the normal top speed). The warp gives you a lot more speed than the other types of boost, if you watch a glitchless run of Desert Adventure Dragway you can see it used to it's full potential.
The game has four different camera angles: Standard, Zoomed Out, Zoomed In, and First Person. I change it to Zoomed Out to see the white bricks down the hill earlier, and then quickly go through the camera options back to Standard.
Is the Indigenous Island a translated non-English title? I remember on my English copy of the game the track was called Tribal Island Trial. Same with Basil the Bat King. In my localization he is known as Basil the Bat Lord.
Thanks, it's one of my favourite games from my childhood aswell. On certain versions of the game (Nintendo 64 and 2001 or later on PC), they made it so driving backwards over the finish does not remove a lap. So you can drive to the first checkpoint (at the door to the shortcut), and then backwards to the second checkpoint (where I use the warp boost), and it will count as driving a lap. It is possible to do on every track in the game, but only faster on about half.

That's a great question! The way you build the car does affect its statistics. The more bricks you have on the car, the higher its top speed and handling will be.
@@Corn-Flakes1000 Is there any downside to having more bricks? Lower acceleration or something? EDIT: Never mind, I see you addressed this in another comment.
Each track only has 2 checkpoints you need to drive through, so on some it is quicker to turn around after the first checkpoint to drive through the second the other way. On the last track doing so is only faster by a few seconds the lap you do it, and loses time on the next lap, so it should only be done on the last lap.
im just wondering now if it somehow you could have a warp at all times, (probably with some cheat) like the second you come out of one warp you can do another one, would you be slower than this.
Once have a bug in this game in my childhood when rocket racer entered warp and was unable to exit it. He just continued to go through entire map with incredible speed and wasn't seen on the track.
Mostly through trial and error, just driving to a certain point then turning around to see if the lap counts. The tracks with really quick skips were found sometime between 1999-2010, but on the other tracks their location was unknown until recently.

The funny thing is, the checkpoints worked normally in the original 1999 release. This is unique to the 2001 version.
