- In this video we take a look at all seven champions from the game LEGO Racers. I made this so you can see all seven in one video rather than watching seven different videos.

Amazing. I literally wrote a letter to LEGO when I was 5, begging them to make a Rocket Racer set. They actually wrote me back and gave me a lego key chain.
I know she doesn't appear in the intro but you should make Veronica's car too

That's so crazy and nostalgic to see. I used to play Lego Racers as a kid and I was so fascinated by the cars and the game itself. I had quite some amount of Lego to rebuild most of them too, even with the fitting characters. Seeing this really makes me regret selling all my Lego back then...

@@greekeo you have to run in window xp mode or lower. There is a tutorial on youtube. Go and look up for windows 7 and above.

It was my favorite game when I was attending kindergarten. I sometimes imagine what if it is rebooted.
I don’t know why Rocket Racer wasn’t packed into copies of Lego Racers.
Neither do I, it would have been amazing to have a Rocket Racer set complete with his car, it would have only been 54 elements in the set including the parts of the minifig itself.

I really miss THESE kinda lego themes. They were so drastically different from one another and really imaginative.
Which is exactly what LEGO was all about back then, *imagination*. Today it's more just building and collecting dust afterwards.
As a child I'd always look for these sets thinking they were real. Seeing them pop on RUclips today brought back memories of Lego racers. Although I seem to remember the Baron and Johnny minifigs as I had them as part of a different set, but the car/jeep was slightly different. The dude with the bat helmet (can't remember his name) I got in a little knight set when I was at the beach one time, came with a shield and a sword. Nice video!
Awww, I built all of them as child. Never had the right colors for the Rocket Racer car, so I made a white version with a slightly different base. That car still is on my desk now, as I turn 29 soon :)

Incredible! For us old nostalgic kids it's a shame that they never produced these sets from the game. Great job! But Von Baron's car had different tires! They were a bit bigger, thicker
He built the cars based on how they appear in the intro. Which also explains why Rocket Racer's car is higher than in the game
If you still have these cars, a close version of Rocket Racer will be appearing in a City Stuntz set at the start of March 2023.
Rocket Racer's car was the COOLEST to me growing up, and it will be the first car I build when LEGO 2K Drive releases next month. Followed by all the other Circuit Champion cars (or as close as I possibly can do for Gypsy's because I very seriously doubt LEGO is going to include those massive barrel wheels)
God, i adore this game so much, I still play it from time to time. Started playing it when I was 6, now I am almost 23 and it still brings me the same joy ❤. It really is a shame that there wasn't a set made for this game...
As of now, with the LEGO City Stuntz subtheme, Rocket Racer has finally been made as an official minifig.
And a blue version has came out from the Lego Minifigures theme.
Still hope that some day LEGO releases another LEGO Racers game like the first. As a promotion for the game they could even sell mini lego sets in their LEGO stores that each build one of these cars and comes with a DLC key for the game, unlocking the corresponding character and their car from the original game.
I love how all pieces look immaculate and also the minifigs look brand new
I think the Technic peg 1x2 piece's different coloration is due to that particular piece being made out of a different plastic. Normal LEGO system bricks are made of ABS which is a decent all-round plastic for detail and structural properties (although it has other issues that other types of plastic don't have to anywhere near the same degree), however hinge pieces are made with Polycarbonate (extremely high impact resistance plastic also used as bulletproof window material) and various technic connectors are made using either Polyamide or POM depending on the particular piece. These different materials can have different opacities, and as a result the dyes will end up looking different due to how they're affected by the natural color of the base material. Polycarbonate, for example, is normally transparent, so it requires a larger amount of dye in the blend to create an opaque part.
Anyway, Insectoids is an interesting line, because lore-wise they could be considered a subtheme of a subtheme - the Insectoids are a group of Zotaxians (UFO aliens) that split off from the original Zotaxian group and settled on a planet inhabited by giant insects. Which technically makes Insectoids a subtheme of UFO, which is in turn a subtheme of "Faction" Space (using "Faction" to differentiate the various space themes that depicted different factions from the original "Classic Space" theme with the blue and gray ships because otherwise someone might show up and complain about UFO and Insectoids being nothing like Classic Space).
Also, Rocket Racer did finally get two minifigures, just not in his LR1 design. First as a CMF blind bag (the race car costume guy is confirmed to be Rocket) and now in LEGO City Stuntz.
One suggestion with Rocket Racer's car, consider putting the 1x4 bearing plates above the chassis plate rather than in-line to get the ride height down. That's how I designed my recreation in LDD.

I may be too late to point this out, when I was a kid I remember building a few circuit champ cars, the best way was to set the champs car in the customisation and deconstruct it piece by piece and follow the steps going backwards

Rocket Racer has now been released as an official minifig, unfortunately, it's not his design from this game. He has a redesign that changes his hair to brown and he shows up twice. First as "Racecar Guy" in a 2018 minifigures series i believe. Then, he shows up as a stunt man in a suit similar to the one seen in Racers 2 in a City set.

I was trying to make some of these too many years back, particularly the Adventurers ones. I too noticed the colour of the technic modified brick on Baron's car, and then right after you pointed it out in the video xD

Johnny Thunder is also my favorite character in all of LEGO, but from LEGO Racers and it's sequel I like Rocket Racer too, and I wish he was the Dino Island Boss in LEGO Racers 2.

I'm happy you have the same color issue with the technick brick called "Brick, Modified 1 x 2 with Pin". I have order it from bricklink and I got the same color as you have. Initially I thought I got dark bluish gray as I don't have any brick in this color to compare with. I was thinking about reorder it, luckily I didn't do it because there would be high chance I would get the same color again. Thanks for the video, it is very informative. And also I have found out there are up to 5 different versions of their cars: intro animation (some of them has two as you mentioned in your video), circuit race intro, ingame CPU, ingame Player1
White rocket racer is now in a real set!
Man, those are the cars of my childhood. I distinctly remember trying to build Rocket Racer's car, but I was lacking a couple of the parts to actually pull it off. Maybe I'll head to Bricklink and get the parts I need.
I also saw on your flickr that you recreated some of the models in Lego Stunt Rally - another game I played a lot growing up - will you be doing a showcase video on those, too? Maybe even including instructions / part lists? That would be amazing!
If Lego 2kdrive doesn't suck, I'll definitely get it and try to replicate some of the older Lego game vehicles in it. :)

This was a dream of mine to have all the cars as a kid. Great game 👍
2 years later after watching and I decided to follow your recipe for Gypsy Moth ! Looks great, I can see what you mean by the Alpha/ Beta models and game model vs cutscene model it does make it confusing. I’ve extended the black back a bit and reversed the blue hollow spoiler to face backwards abs lowered it by 1 plate to make it flush with the dark grey bricks etc. also I see what you mean about the strength etc of the car but I can’t find any side shot footage of the car without painstakingly buying the game and replaying through to when she’s on the map lol. I think I’m going for the game/ cutscene hybrid with a dark grey undercarriage and that light grey seating. But yeah that was painstaking to find the right pieces mainly blue wheels and to get it to look right. Love your work!
I think the reason for the johnny thunder gap is that ingame, the boosters aren't single stud high pieces, they're an entire 1x2 brick.
I probably do have all the parts in a huge number of chests stored in my parents garage. Interesting that Rocket Racer wasn’t released until 2018 after being redesigned again

My #1 Favorite Champion Cars are Circuits #3 (Basil The Batlord as Top 1 Overall cuz his car reminds me of Red/Black Dragon Car and Basil has my #1 favorite Colors which is Red/Black or Black/Red), & #7 (Rocket Racer as Top 2 but I like the Original Colors from 1999 better than the 2nd version which is White from 2001) including Veronia Voltage as 1 of my #1 favorite Female Racers from Time Trial Racer.
My #1 Favorite Co-Racer is Willa The Witch and also 1 of my #1 favorite Female Racers.

I realize I'm two years late, but Kahuka's more impossible than you made it out to be. You can see lines in the front bumper whne he boosts (possible right before, I can't remember) that indicate that the axle piece can only be a 2x1 plate. The only matching piece didn't exist until 2015. In addition, the three plate layers on the front are each a single color, making the axles you used impossible because they extend down.
TL;DR, Kahuka's car is even more impossible in the intro. My suspicion is that they cut a 2x2 double axle in half.

Your series of videos were very helpful, but there is something I'm surprised you didn't mention. first being how the assembly of king kahukas' front wheel assembly was impossible! (The colors and panel lines suggest parts that didn't exist until recently, and don't exist in the color shown)
Something else I'm not sure about is the headlight assembly of Baron von Barron's car, the tile in between looks like it should be dark grey instead of the light grey shown here!
Blimey you know what you're right there, the tile absolutely is Dark Grey, I've got no idea how I've managed to not see that all these years!

What parts exactly did you use for Rocket Racer's car? Im gonna try to build it for my brother and give it to him for christmas. We played lego racers on pc when we were kids, and its a souce of some powerful nostalgia for the both of us.

Maybe pick a few favorite cars from each environment
All of the cars in the second game are actually from existing sets from the late '90s and early '00s so there's really not anything unique except Rocket's car which is just a repaint of his first car.
the piece on the back of Baron's car is dark blueish gray! i could spot it immediately
It's actually not, I discovered that there is an odd batch of Dark Grey that has ended up in between Dark Grey and Dark Bluish Grey somehow.
It could also be due to the type of plastic they used for that piece since it has a Technic pin on it. That plastic used on pieces that had these pins was known to be different to add strength to the pins.
In person the colour is much closer to Dark Grey compared to how it looks on camera.

Thanks, it wasn't really difficult to gather the parts needed, it just took a few months to get it all together to build them.

My original intention was to make only the cars featured in the 3D animated intro of the game and not the actual game itself. There has been someone to make the A.I. racers though, if you go to my Flickr and look at my favorites you'll see them.

You can edit car models in the game. You don't have to rely on blurry videos.
The video isn't blurry when you step through it frame by frame which is what I did. Due to the way LEGO is it wasn't too difficult to get the major pieces figured out, it was the smaller ones that took looking through multiple scenes to spot which piece it was.
I've seen flasheric make these guys. :)
Wonderful job, though I have to admit, I'm a little confused as to why you worked off the intro sequence rather than the in-game builds, where you can take the designs apart brick by brick.
You can't take the chassis apart to every brick, also the reason I built them based on the intro cars was because this is how the real cars made during development were built.
I emailed one of the animators of the intro and he said that the cars were built out of real elements then modelled into Lightwave 3D. The in game cars are also very simplified so it can be a bit difficult to tell exactly what elements where used.
Since the intro has high poly models (for that time) it's easier to see exactly which elements were used making it easier to build the real cars.
@@ZANTHERA Fair enough, I wasn't aware that they were built as real models prior to rendering in the game.
Would you consider building some of the other racers' cars? Granted, most of them are not nearly as interesting as the circuit champions' vehicles, and one particular model is repeated for racers it doesn't match, but I've always wanted to see a full set, as it were.

King Kahuka's feather plume is shifted forwards on the "Quick Build" version of the car, the AI vehicle still has it at the back (as per the cutscene and in your video) Really odd inconsistency!
Apparently the car models of the AI drivers are not made of bricks like the player's car and are instead "full" models, except for the wheels. This explains how they can seemingly use different colors/parts and in the demo (that plays when you idle in the main menu) you can also see the shadows on the demo car are different.
@@AyCe Still strange that they would have the "Quick Build" version of the car be different to the AI model, the AI model is completely possible to build using the in-game editor too
@@twoeasy3 I think it was easier polycount-wise on the PCs/consoles of that time. They also don't have bottom textures, you can see through.
@@AyCe I think you are mistaking what I meant. I meant it is strange that the plume, on the AI 3D model, is placed at a different position than in the player's "Quick Build" option. You can even go and rearrange the pieces on the player car to look like the AI's model, which is strange that they left it like that.
I know the AI model is one whole baked 3D model, but they could have kept the design of the AI and the quickbuild one the same

Hey ZANTHERA, can I check with you if RR’s helmet visor is trans-black or black in color?
The intro FMV version is Trans Black but the in game version is solid Black since there isn't any transparency like that in the game.
That is also why his windscreen is solid Black in game.

I wish they'd do another Kego Racing game. I'd love to see a Classic Space man driving a Car akin to the Galaxy explorer.
I felt Captain Redbeard and King Kahuka were too similar. Same with Johnny Thunder and Baron. I didn't know it was possible to build these sets. It's a shame that there's no Rocket Racer character.

Most of them come in several sets of their themes which are the following names on Bricklink.
Captain Redbeard is from Pitrates I
King Kahuka is from Pitrates I - Islanders
Johnny Thunder and Baron Von Barron are from Adventurers - Desert
Basil the Batlord is from Castle - Fright Knights
Gypsy Moth is from Space - Insectoids

Did you build those cars yourself? Or how did you get those?
Yes I built them myself using the games intro FMV for reference as they are the closest thing to real builds for these. The in game cars had a lot of impossible connection and custom pieces.
The year is 2020 and I just learned from this video that Gypsy moth is a girl....

You can't buy them complete i'm afraid, you'll have to do exactly as I've done and gather the parts to build them yourself. It took a few months for me to buy all the individual elements and minifigs to complete them.

Just FYI when you beat each boss you can unlock their car and look at it in detail.
These are based on the ones you see in the intro FMV to the game, which aren't built quite the same as the in game versions.

@@Wow-lz4bz I've always liked 3D animation, and the FMVs to all the games are ones I watched ever time I played, so I wanted to recreate these ones specifically.
These are also able to be made easier, due to the FMV models being based on physical builds made in developlemt, whereas the in game cars can have odd placements of pieces, that aren't possible to do in real bricks, so end up needing to be altered.
It’s not a scratch, I was literally just looking at mine going oh man where did that come from it’s a little + sign since they are cyborg aliens maybe it’s a special zoom eye? Not sure but don’t worry they’re all like that!
No it is some damage, I have since acquired a brand new set that I opened with her in it and her head is perfect and doesn't have this damage.
Around this time some minifigs had heads that were very hard to remove for whatever reason so that is why you'll find a lot of her with poor condition heads unless you buy a sealed set or a used set that an adult collector had from new.
@@ZANTHERA Mine has the exact same + symbol over her right eye and on google all photo's of the minifigure have this detail. Unless it's a factory error and a lot of them have it. The artwork shows her without it but all exampes I've found online have that + detail. If you found one without that's interesing I'd be curious to see her.
I can see the scratch to the center of the visor, I was referingto the blue cross next to her right eye, I believe that part is intentional though. Yes a lot of hard to remove helmets ruined many a poor fig!

Wasn't there three shades of grey? The old one, the bluish one, and another bluish right between.
These greys are the old greys, known simply as Light Grey and Dark Grey. When they changed to the new greys they were given more detailed names.
The names which appear on LDD are Dark Stone Grey, Medium Stone Grey and Light Stone Grey.
Why there is no Veronica Voltage car?
It's because these are builds of the intro FMV versions of the cars, not the in game models, and Veronica's car isn't seen in the intro FMV.
I remember making these my self as a kid lol the colors were all mismatched. It’s a shame Lego never released these as sets.

Veronica's car was not seen in the games 3D animated intro which is what these cars are based on, she was only seen in game.

Moc or set?
These are technically MOCs but I didn't design them, they don't exist as sets sadly so I gathered all the individual parts and built them myself based on how they looked in the 3D animated intro of the game.
