He never left Candlemass, as he never was a member. ;) he was only a session musician.
Johan is the better studio singer while Marcolin is a live force. But at the end of the day Epicus remains one timeless masterpiece of (doom) metal with one of the best voices ever to perform on a metal record.

Johan is by far the best vocalist Candlemass has ever had. I wish he'd done more.
Me too. I think Epicus was one of the only, if not THE only metal record he’s ever recorded.

Breaking news! Johan is offficially back in Candlemass in september 2018! :D
And it’s about fucking time!! He should’ve been Candlemass’ singer the whole way through their 32+ year career, if you ask me. Not that I have any disdain for the other singers because I don’t but I feel Johan is a better fit, his lower-ranged vocals gel much better with CM’s dirge-y doom.
I’m sure Messiah has the majority vote here but I’ve always thought his vibrato was a bit too rapid-fire staccato, at least for my tastes. Lowe was pretty good, albeit a better fit for Solitude Aerurnus imho. Vikstrom is great too but his tenor voice is more tailored for Therion’s operatic style... and Mats should keep on trucking with KRUX because his gritty voice is perfect for that band.
Welcome back Johan! Looking forward to the new record in 2019-ish!
Just sampled the 2 late 90’s CM albums & I have to say, the dude’s (Björn?) vocals fit the music pretty well. Having said that - this “experimental” or “alternative” style of doom metal is not really my cup of tea.

I'm just home after been at Johan's first foreign concert ever with Candlemass which started in Norway today.
It were awesome, and Candlemass sounded even more heavy now than last year.
Johan's voice were damn good, and he moved around stage etc. all the time.

Being a fan of Candlemass since a bootleg of E.D.M. hit my hands in '87 or so, it's great to see/hear this. I think Messiah fit "his" Candlemass albums perfectly, but Johan's delivery on E.D.M. can't be equaled on these songs. Awesome!
The original voice of European Doom. I will never understand why they didn't get this guy back after they parted ways with Messiah (for the second time) and especially now, since they also kicked out Rob Lowe.

@adekito he was never a member of candlemass just a session vocalist. he was offered the gig but didnt want to tour because of his daily job and family!

Read in an article that he left Candlemass cause of a pop project he was producing at the time Epicus was released :S Candlemass were literally begging him not to leave the band.. Imagine what he would become if he stayed... a Doom Legend!!!

if theres a word better than master piece thats what epicus doomicus is! the studio recording of this song is a brutallity of nature, but malcolin live is supreme!

Candlemass only used one guitar in their late 90's albums "Dactylis Glomerata" and "From the 13th sun"

I think Johan's voice is a better fit for doom metal than Messiah's. Not to take anything away from Messiah, though. That dude is awesome.

Even if Messiah was/is one of the best voices in Metal, he could never reach the magic of Johan on this record. Epicus is Epicus!

@zamkam candlemass always have 2 gtr players. dactylis glomerata and 13th sun are not official candlemass albums! so if u check the first 4 cd all of them have 2 gtr players!

Messiah Marcolin very near to Johan's voice, i always confuse them.
Johans voice is slightly deeper and richer, while Messiahs is a bit stronger with an earthshaking vibrato.

Best album - Best live version. Messiah is a a shadow compared to Johan.
