If you want an easy one, Use small tires with a flange attached so it keeps on the track.. it also wont connect the circuit on a less abandoned line thus dispacher wont see you on the line.
I probably would have sawn the main axels in half and then stuck a pipe 1/8" to 1/4" thinner down the middle so that they could co-independently roll together but when you hit a curve it won't add unnecessary friction to whichever is the outside wheel. Still a very good build for something that is just for short fun and can easily be dismantled and thrown away later if desired. My even try it myself someday if I removed backup North, but I would add Springs

Braking* is probably just by rail friction (disconnecting the drive system/loosening the belt) so that the cart coasts without power, or slowing or stopping the engine since the drive system is direct drive.
Those wheels are key because the modern rail kart wheels manufactured today are synthetic/plastic with rubber treads--not very durable--but the steel wheels are the ones you want.
So Cool! There was this old idea , patent 3013505, of a hover train that uses standard rails . How hard would it be to make a homebuilt version of such a rail cart ?
All I need is some 700 mm wheels axles, which I can just buy off the local sugar mill here in Indonesia. Afterwards, just use them on the sugar mill's disused field lines. By the way, is there any way you could make a suspension so that it wouldn't be so bumpy?
Great video! I've been considering making similar project because we have one nice long abandoned track nearby. But, how you did the brakes? It's important for me because our track here have some long steep sections - i don't want to end up in the bushes :)
+xxRANDOMxx wheels are the hardest part to find, try looking for mine cart wheels, which you can enlarge by using a steel tube. They do sometimes appear on sites like Craigslist. Someone is selling a bunch in the Netherlands if you live in Europe. I just bought a couple from him.
How heavy is that cart? Can two grown men lift it onto the tracks? You actually get her up to 30mph? Nice and simple build and I like your add on cart for getting wood. Great idea
It was really heavy, at least 4 men were required to lift it! So we did always keep it on the tracks. Yes, the top speed was at least 30mph, maybe more. Thank you, wood was my only option because I didn't know how to weld.
+Inse van houts Its always the wheels that are the toughest to find and the wheels you are using are proper rail yard cart wheels which are heavy. There is a guy in australia, i believe, who makes polypropylene wheels and charges like 1700$ plus shipping. Way out of control for the price. I might make a go on building my own wheels out of pipe and make a ring piece to fit as the inside flange. Its got to be laser straight before welding or I will be hopping down the track from the wheel being out of balance. HAHA.
ChiefJustice Middleton wow, that's way too pricey! The thing I like about the metal wheels is the sound, it's just amazing! "tata tata tata..." That sounds quite familiar to me, my right rear wheel was out of balance when I bought it, that was the thing that limited my speed to 30mph, it just started bouncing around if I was going faster :/ The engine was only at half its throttle :( So yes, make sure you do that right :)
Inse van houts Id actually like to have it ride quieter so the poly wheels would be a bonus and try and keep the engine noise down as well somehow. Maybe keep the motor as low as possible. I wouldnt want to go past 30mph, some of these tracks are iffy in some places and 30 mph you can travel a very long distance on rail especially. These b and s motors are typical to run 3600 rpm. You can rev faster, however the power curve drops off and the reliabilty as well. I know how to work out my perfect gear ratio for this as well. They make a max torque clutch and a 1/2 reduction wet clutch as well.

What size wood did you use for the frame? This is a lovely rail cart and I am hoping to build one with a similar design. The only issue at this point has been finding wheels. I don't exactly live near a place that would have a pair like the ones you used unfortunately.
+Dimitri Shaddaa I used normal construction wood for the frame, it's 8x6cm. But I'd make it out of metal if I'd build it again. The wheels are the hardest part to find, you basically have to be lucky, and search sites like Craigslist everyday ;) Good luck with your build!
Inse van houts Oh man tell me about it haha. I came incredibly close to purchasing some from tourist railways but they told be they needed them. And alrighty. Thanks!
People should buy my "Impact' a James Grider novel on Amazon so I can afford to move out of a desert area into a forested area like that near a railroad track and do this. Maybe I could write that James Grider clandestinely travels America on a thing like that on active rails illegally, but only during the dark. It would be droll to write that a train catches up from behind going slightly faster and starts pushing the cart ahead after the catcher bumps into it. The hero must then climb onto the locomotive because he senses danger. The second he leaves the go cart, the high speed derails it and it's gulped under the train, obliterated into splinters but the hero is safe clinging to the front of a locomotive. Same scenario could be done with one of those trucks that have train wheels.
Andrei - "Making homemade train wheels is a nightmare." - Not really, get yourself some 10 or 12 inch hard rubber wheels moulded onto heavy duty steel rims (the kind used on heavy-duty handtrucks) . Cut some appropriate diameter discs out of 1/2 inch thick steel plate & bolt them to one side of the hard rubber wheels using Grade 8 bolts, (appropriate sized holes in centers for Axle shafts and Flange Bearings) .
Awesome job of your railcart! I own a railbike/cart too, you can see it on my youtube channel, i sure do love this hobby of rolling the the rails, nothing in the world like it. :-)
I'm gonna take a look on your channel for sure! I love to see what others made. And yes, riding on abandoned tracks is one of the best things to do, no rules, you don't have to worry about anything
first thing I see is wood and i think light ,then I see cast iron wheels and I think this is probably not going to be anything functional for my needs of a rail bicycle HPV not a gas powered beast.
This looks like massive excitement for those cows.
Really nicely built rail trolley

How do you stop? The breaking system? Also where did you get the bearings?

Those are called carrier bearings and you can pick them up on Amazon for cheap. They're suprisingly good so long as you maintain them.
😎Cool! Thanks. Happy riding man.
Very cool! Congratz!!!
How cool xx
Thank you :) have you seen the video of it on the tracks?
Heel vet, waar licht dit spoor?
Very good job, I wanted to know how you did with the shaft, did you put a pipe on the outside to extend it, and what are the dimensions of the wood?
molto bravo e molto ingenioso
how cool!!! what an adventure, how long is that rail line?
In km or miles? :P
I'm confused I'm going in the old railway to find some train wheels and I will do the exact same thing THANKS BRO ! ! !

You don't need wheels. Just one solid pipe will do with flange collars near the ends, not right at the very end of course, but about two inches back.
