  • Adrian Newey has officially departed Red Bull, with the team reportedly entering into meltdown with multiple other senior figures considering an exist. Max Verstappen is presumably among them, with his father Jos responding to the situation. Fred Vasseur allegedly met with Newey in London today to secure the Ferrari contract move.

This was probably the best compromise for both parties. RedBull would have had a potentially significant problem if Newey just left right now. They sold 50 HyperCars at $6.3 million a piece as a car designed by Newey with no compromises. If he left now, that wouldn’t be true and could leave RB with a multitude of legal issues and disgruntled rich customers that might seek compensation. That’s $300 million in business that RB is incentivized to go smoothly. So they release him early, and he probably agrees to not say anything disparaging about Horner.

I agree there are plenty of other talented people, I don’t think anyone is suggesting different but he’s a huge talent. Over the last few years though I’m sure he’s passed on a huge amount of knowledge but it’s the fear of the unknown right? In 2026 we add active aero combined with ground effect. Will the knowledge he’s passed on be enough to keep RB at the top? Will 2 - 3 years of mentoring be enough to keep RB winning?

Truth in your statement, but computer generated models and CFD is what the new engineers know. Which is fine and good, but Newey seems to have in intuitive grasp of these things, which is why he still uses a drawing board and visualizes things in his mind. That's part of his genius. Another part is that he can then translate those images to the car and they work.

Sainz must be thinking Red Bull is no longer an attractive team to join, so that leaves Mercedes which would only offer a 1 year contract or Audi with a 3 year contract and a major role to play there.
That means Max could join Mercedes, then Horner would be effectively without a lead driver to join Red Bull.
Driver market is going to explode!🤯

The downfall would not be because Newey is leaving Red Bull. It will be when Ford comes in in 2026 and Max leave's Red Bull. Ford is way behind schedule with the new motor and they are not getting the power they need. Max already knows this and knows that Mercedes will have a great motor.

How does the budget cap fit into all this? The part-time work loophole has been patched. If Ferrari hires him, he will be among the top three personnel and exempt from the cap. But that means somebody high up goes into the cap or is let go. Is Newey working part-time better for the team than this other person who most likely works full-time? Newey might be hired for a short time (2 years) with a lot of money. He gives away all the Red Bull secrets for the 2026 cars, takes in the money, and retires. The team gets a dominant car to win championships with.

  • @JMRope

Red Bull managed to hold on to Newey far longer than any other team. I suspect that was in a large part due to the Mercedes dominance. The challenge of getting to the top probably holds more appeal than staying at the top. He didn't want to leave Red Bull when they were second or third best but he can leave when they are clearly the best. So the first race of 2026 is going to be very exciting. Who knows which team will get it right?
If Red Bull does fall back though and their 2026 car can't compete for the title that could be good news for Danny Ric. Last time he joined them was after four years of dominance, so there's every chance history could repeat.

Don’t know the extent of his contract and non-compete clauses; which could explain the vagueness of “leaving in the first quarter of2025.”
Not sure what countries laws are brought into play in this situation as you have three separate entities in Redbull, F1 and the FIA.
Our government here in the States did the only respectable thing in the last three years and banned non-compete clauses. Would have been great when I was a journalist and didn’t have to move x amount of hundreds of miles/kilometers away to avoid a lawsuit.
