Yeah, unfortunately. I'll usually add more clarity to it if they wanna know, but just as a gross oversimplification, that seems to do the job. Also, while were here, I wanted to warn you of something. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but it looks like (for now, at least) Yooka-Laylee will be digital-only on the Switch.
Dang, pretty sharp. Can't wait to see the differences between proper RGB and the HDMI modded board. Though, I get the impression that the HDMI mod will just be a more convenient (easier cable set up) RGB output than anything else, rather than an outright improvement of the results shown here.
Nintendo's decision not to include RGB in the N64 is clearly unforgivable but just for the record here in the UK, where we had RGB scart, the most popular accessory for the N64 was....the RF modulator!
Yes it was. I remember having to tune it in 😆 then we got the component cable with scart adapter now I’ve actually got the monster s video cable in this video and I think it looks really good on my tv now really pleased with it. Such an awesome console. I miss those days I feel the quality of games now has gone down hill Nintendo is still awesome but not much else interests me I guess I miss rare the most
5:00 Funny thing about those monster cables, I actually got one for free when I bought my gamecube at a game store. They told me they were harder to find when giving them to me, so that was very nice of them. Granted, I've spent far more than what these cables are worth (didn't know they were $60+) at said store since then, so they got my trust for the long term dollars from me lol.
no console "thinks" in RGB (or any video encoding format). RGB and any video option on the N64 has to do with how the cable maintains the quality of the signal off the DAC, which takes a raw image from the framebuffer. Wikipedia has some good articles on how each cable maintains (or doesn't) signal quality, give it a read!
The newer RGB is a lot cleaner and better on colours. Being based in the UK, imported a Japanese N64. It came with the old RGB mod in it (Just a chip and a few wires). I bought and installed the newer RGB myself, which is the same one that goes in a SNES. I too pump the signal through a framemeister, and it looks really good on my TV. I'm trying to make sure all my consoles are RGB or component ready. I'd love to get my hands on the N64 HDMI mod, but they're always out of stock when I look.
Your videos give me a new level of appreciation for European TVs like mine having SCART support natively. Our HDTVs still have RGB SCART sockets to this day, albeit usually only one port, but still it's there. My Panasonic Viera does a good job of upscaling low resolution signals if a good quality standard like RGB SCART or component is used that doesn't hinder image clarity (I know they're not the same :P), so I don't need a framemeister, which my wallet appreciates. I imagine an upscaler would probably further improve the image, but I've found TVs from 2012 onwards (early HDTVs sucked) over here in the PAL region handle clear SD signals pretty well. Although, with capture cards lacking RGB SCART support (at least my Elgato anyway), an upscaler may be something I need to look into down the line. Interlacing is the bane of my streaming existence. #firstworldproblems We had to wait a little longer for component though, and a lot of PAL releases for consoles like PS2 and Gamecube had progressive scan support removed completely, even though their NTSC counterparts supported the standard, leaving us stuck with 576i (or 480i if 60hz was an option). Thankfully RGB SCART support made it somewhat more bearable, but now I've been attaining NTSC versions of 6th gen titles to get better resolution. For retro game collectors, if there's any specialist stores that sell new TVs from Europe over in the US, it's perhaps something to consider, seeing as they support *both* PAL and NTSC signals at 50hz and 60hz and support both component and RGB SCART natively. Probably not likely such an option exists though.
I was lucky enough to have an N64 that could take the simpler RGB mod board, which was actually pretty simple to install. The new ones however, from what I hear have the ability to turn on image de-blurring, which is an extra bit of post-processing that strips out some of the N64's inherent blurriness. You can also get similar results using a gameshark on some games, or if you run patched versions on an Everdrive.
Well to be honest it works on my HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition, but the TV doesn't have the signal there...The game capture on the thing itself on the monitor works though... I seriously love the N64...Best old console out there etc...
Hey Adam when will you look at an N64 with ETim's universal board. This allows every N64 to be RGB moddable and it also has the ability to use De-Blur to get rid of the hardware antialiasing.
The N64 is better with the HDMI mod, because it's a much easier install, and it lets you disable the horrible anti-aliasing in the console to produce a much sharper image. They're not coming, they've been here for quite a while now. No idea on prices, but HDMI makes a lot of sense if you're into modding, unless you live in Europe and keep a CRT around for your retro consoles. S-Video is a secret in the PAL consoles, with a conventional s-video cable causing too much brightness. A resistor on Luma drops this significantly so that it looks normal.
It was Nintendo who stopped Monster selling certain cables abroad. Nintendo also wouldn't allow their own GameCube component cable to be sold outside the US.
Nintendo didn't stop Monster doing anything. Nintendo's GC component cable was only sold in Japan and had a proprietary chip in it so was unable to be copied by 3rd party cable manufacturers
The D-Terminal cable was exclusive to Japan. The component cable in the US had to be ordered from Nintendo's website. Nintendo stopped eBay and Amazon from selling the cables abroad by third party sellers.
Awesome video Adam. I have the older RGB mod, This definitely looks a little nicer but probably not worth upgrading from the older one for me, especially if the HDMI mods are starting to become more common.
Let me get this straight, for the scart to hdmi converter to work I need to have my console modded with RGB mod & buy the converter as well, Im an oldschool gamer but new to all this, I have a Japanese ntsc console, what's my best option, I didn't really want to mod the console
i have a coupple of these modded, i mod them myself along with svideo genesis, vga dreamcasts, all that, but the rgb n64 is a good step up, but i like rgb or svideo on genesis more
Honestly youtube doesn't do any justice to the comparison. Only difference i saw was Composite/Svideo to RGB, but no improvement at all between Old and New, in fact to me it actually looked worse on the new one IMO. I just can't wait for the HDMI mods for the N64 to come down in price $150+ for just the mod board itself, then you have to pay someone skilled enough to install it, because it is a very complex, and you can easily fuck up your system as you are soldering a ribbon cable onto the actual pins of one of the processors.
That Monster cable doesn't work properly on PAL units. I used it and it would produce a signal way too bright. In the case of the N64, you must buy an S-video cable that is both shielded and intended for either PAL or NTSC.
The RGB mod is never the way to go even if you already have a setup with a FMeister over the Ultra HDMI mod. The only consideration would be cost. The Ultra HDMI mod is VASTLY!!! superior to an RGB modded console. The reason for this is mainly the deblur feature of the HDMI mod as it approaches MAGICAL status.
I would say RGB is the way to go right now, because unfortunately even if you have the money for the ultra HDMI there is no way to get it right now. So RGB for the win!
I have the Ultra HDMI and find myself using S-Video instead. The Ultra HDMI looks too pixelated for my liking. S-Video gives it more of that authentic look of a CRT-TV. I don’t have RGB but I’m looking forward for this mod.
i made my own S-video cable for the SNES/N64/Gamecube years ago, looks good on my old 29 inch TV.... the n64 looks so bad that going any farther than Svideo is a waste
The original Nintendo S-Video cable is actually good, I have one. Not saying it is better than the Monster one, but yours was probably in bad shape or faked.
I guess I'm lucky being in the UK. rgb being standard. Got my dreamcast and gamecube hooked up via rgb scart. looks great. orginal xbox modded to 480p component. Adam did you ever do a comparison video to the quality of playstation 2 vs playstation 2 via the fat 60gig ps3. That is the next console I want to buy to play ps2 games upscaled via ps3.
Adam Koralik I understand, that's what I meant. I was just saying with s-video and the n64 I had no isuses and a improved picture compared to your experience. I just thought it was odd because I have not heard anything bad when it comes to s-video and the n64 sorry.
shame they left components out on the pal (UK) version for composite/s-video, so makes the brightness way overpowering in the pic, tho fortunately you can buy a cable with the mod as oppose to having to mod the console, tho still wont beat rgb, lets hope hdmi comes round for a nice price tho
hard to think of growing up without the scart cables, not just on pretty much every games console I owned, from the ps1 right through to to the 360 but on things like dvd players too. now there useless
It is worth it if you're in Europe and are planning to use it for official emulation through VC or unofficial emulation through RetroArch. It's the simplest way to get emulated games to look exactly like an RGB console by far.
I'm getting my N64 RGB modded and I plan on using HD retrovision cables, however I have a Sony CRT kv-32fv320 that has component inputs but only reads 240 so will this N64 configuration output a 240 signal or will it be higher that the my sony CRT will not properly display an image?
Adam I really need your help! I recently had my NTSC n64 modded for rgb but the problem I'm having is that it was wired to accept composite for sync only. I only have a sync on luma cable and csync cable. I can't for the life of me find one wired with composite for sync anywhere. I found a Japanese one but was expensive as hell and it was jp21 not euroscart. do you know of any alternatives?? thanks Adam for the great video!
I'm from Australia so we are PAL but we don't have RGB SCART. I can get it rgb modified here, so I guess it would be using composite cables still? and I also want to play the 64 on my HDTV. Is this worth it? I'm guessing I need a framemeister?
@@AdamKoralik maybe one day I'd love to hear your opinion on if it's better than getting an rgb mod and using a framemister supposedly it is due to it removing the blur that the n64 is known for but like you I haven't been able to get a hold of one
Okay so where can I get the 21 pin SCART cable for my n64 with rgb mod? I looked up SCART cables but they don't seem to be the 21 pin version. For reference I am using an ntsc n64 on an ntsc hdtv.
daaamnn i was watching your old video about this just today,scarry...by the way i just got n64 and i plugged it's three color screen cable to that scart thing but i couldn't get any picture.what is the problem?(by the way it is pal version)
Different Question: I have a HD Component Cable on my old PS2. Whats the best way to clean the picture up or is there no way to get a better picture out of the console?
Jonathan, PS2 games on PS3 still look really washed out and muddy on an HDTV. I bought the same games on PS3 thinking they would look amazing, but they're just not meant for that format. Even with smoothing off they lose the sharp edges, bright colors and deep darks. Plus PS2 games on 3 suffer frame drops that didn't previously exist. Contra Shattered Soldier ran a solid 60fps on PS2. CRT with component still translates beautifully to this day, but only via component (green/blue/red/white/red). If you're using the original composite cables (yellow/white/red) you're definitely missing out on what the old systems had to offer.
Does anyone know if anyone can do this mod in the U.K.? Even if it means buying the board and sending off the the console and board to be soldered. Thanks guys!
4:14 what's worse is JP21/SCART users would never know..? I doubt anywhere in N64 box documentation tells you what output you can get Just like my fucking PS1 LCD screen, PDF does not say.. for what I paid it'd better not be composhit no matter how small it is
Hey man hope u seem this. If my USA N64 is NOT RGB modded could a scart cable and scart to hdmi converter still be used to transfer the s-video signel to a tv that only has hdmi in?
Well thanks for the reply man. I pretty tech savy and it stumped me also. I picked up a generic 64 scart cable and scart to hdmi converter ill just give it a shot and see what happens. Im unfamiliar with the actual variations of the scart cable themselves tho. Is there a different scart cable for ntsc vs pal?
ok thanks...do you have any suggestions for s-video to an hdtv with no svideo input? i really dont want to go as far as RGB mod as i am fine with s vid i just dont know how to get it on my tv without a huge loss in quality
adam thanks :) i think if any one try to play N64 games via emulator it will give you the best quality .. i know that video for console but thats my thougts :D thanks again
I dont even know why i used the term "have" because who would let someone just have a wii u kiosk, but um Yes,Thank you! I especially like the one at my local Best Buy. Also worth just saying,I prefer the ORIGINAL model PS4 (i like the design) and now(as far as i know) No one has any NEW original model PS4,I olny see the slim or pro now,So i asked a Walmart employee if i could just buy the one on display in the kiosk and they can you know like put a pro or slim in there to replace it and he straight up said a flat "No" i said "Why not" He said "I cant tell you that" So i just left it alone..............but that was strange as hell. Sorry for the paragraph
I've always found that calling RGB SCART the HDMI of its time to be much easier when explaining it to people.
I wish it was that simple. But when you factor in how SCART and RGB SCART aren't the same thing...it gets more complicated.

2:25 It moved! Demon!
as a Brit hearing you trying to explain scart to an American audience always just makes me smile :)

Of course those Monster cables are hard to come by, no one who bought them for $900 in the '90s would want to get rid of them.
That's a crazy difference! thanks for sharing!

A question - in the description you say SCART isn't worth it on the Wii - why not? It's all I've ever used... live in Europe by the way.
Because the Wii supports component and higher resolution modes.

I found a CRT with component input. Looks incredible. Much better than my flatscreen.
MartyHD I guess I'm the only one who thinks playing these games on the original 60gb ps3 is best picture quality
Don't mean to be rude but is there a reason why you don't do side by side comparisons for quality?
Just enjoy doing it this way.
So what's better rgb with framemeister or hdmi?
is it true that PAL N64s can't be missed for RGB ?
You mean modded? They can now, there was a time when they couldn't.
Adam Koralik i meant modded :) curse you auto spell lol :) great video dude, very informative as usual :)
4:14 what's worse is JP21/SCART users would never know..? I doubt anywhere in N64 box documentation tells you what output you can get
Just like my fucking PS1 LCD screen, PDF does not say.. for what I paid it'd better not be composhit no matter how small it is
Hey man hope u seem this. If my USA N64 is NOT RGB modded could a scart cable and scart to hdmi converter still be used to transfer the s-video signel to a tv that only has hdmi in?
Maybe? Would depend on the cable. More likely it'd just pass composite through. Honestly not sure.
Not really, just don't get the Japanese cables. They look like SCART, but are totally different.
ok thanks...do you have any suggestions for s-video to an hdtv with no svideo input? i really dont want to go as far as RGB mod as i am fine with s vid i just dont know how to get it on my tv without a huge loss in quality
Would I be able to use those component cables you find for the snes on these?
Possibly? I don't have a set.
Notification squad! ✌️
06:47 differences between the old mod and our new and improved method.
Thank you for the support.
Of course!
New rgb has deblur now.
adam thanks :) i think if any one try to play N64 games via emulator it will give you the best quality .. i know that video for console but thats my thougts :D
thanks again
can you make svideo cables
Does rgb really look better on a crt tv?
Subjective matter to be honest.
Was original Xbox only popular in North America
+Heidi Nielson Certainly where it did the best, but it did decently in Europe and Australia.
Adam, Do you think ANY store would let me have a Wii U kiosk?
+Dakota Watson Have? No. They might sell it though if you find a cool manager.
Sorry for the paragraph
do they do repairs as well or just mods
