- It's Adam Koralik here and today we're checking out the Everdrive X7 for the Nintendo 64. This is a flash card made by Ukranian hero, Krikzz. The purpose is to allow all, or at least almost all, N64 games to function off of a single cartridge. It even has some bonuses such as NES emulation, GameShark support, being region free, anti-aliasing patching, and limited 64DD support. Let's talk about it!

0:39 "back then I was really only focusing on the Dreamcast"
I never really pegged you as someone who *kept Dreaming* 🍥
Luigiblood made all 64 DD games playable on the everdrive. He converted the DD games into regular n64 ROMs
yeah that was my thought too, I've used DD games on the ED64 for awhile now.
I've been using those roms & also the Seta Aleck 64 arcade roms on my ED64 Plus. Work just fine.
There was a forum I found that had aleck 64 games, DD games and prototypes. I believe bit was on the krikks forums
That was the quickest unboxing ever. That envelope was torn and that everdrive was in focus under 2 seconds 👍👍
You need converted ROMs to play DD games, no DD required. I have Simcity 64 and Doshin on my original Everdrive
Orly....
N64 had a magical charm to it that is sorely missing today.
Nice to see the X7 now automatically detects region instead of requiring the physical switch, though I'm pretty relieved it's not a massive upgrade to my V3 and it's job as the permanent fixture in my N64 is assuredly safe! Love this thing.
I love listening to you talk about games. Your enthusiasm gets me so friggin' pumped!
It's funny: recently, I was thinking about getting an N64 Everdrive. I might just do that now!
I would too but $200 no thanks
@@johnsmith-vz4skConsidering it'll cost you way more to buy most N64 cartridges, $200 for almost every game in the n64 library is a bargain
@@deckofcards87 True even just the first party games alone will run you about that. The everdrive 64 cart is worth it for the original paper Mario and the first 3 Mario party's alone cost double the amount of the flash cart.
Bottom line it's worth it. 🙂
Just bought one today, once I fully restore this bad boy I'll play f zero x all night ayyyyyyy
@@Brunn0121 how did it go for you? I am thinking of buying it but just wondered. Did you feel you get the value, and what do you use for your video output, the hdmi some sort or just the standard av cable, or what?
Just in case you were interested, the entire North American collection of N64 games can fit on a DVD-R. It was fun to sneak that into work back in the day. I mean uh.... Eh, what do I care I don't work there anymore.
You could probably fit the entire official N64 catalogue on an 8Gb card.
Another great video as always, I'd really like a deeper look at this running with patch & mClassic. Keep up the great work Adam!
Very satisfying video. Thanks for explain all that stuff. I bought my everdrive today.
"You want fun,Wario show you fun"
-Wario,E3 1996 at N64 reveal
I’d enjoy a video about the everdrive connected thru the M-Classic with the patches on.
Keep up the great work dude! Love the videos.
Adam has the best collection! I love watching this channel
@Adam Koralik
To enable auto patching, pull the Z trigger to open the options menu.
Also, the .ips file in the AUTO folder must match the .n64 filename exactly. Example:
game-name v1.01 (USA).n64
and
game-name v1.01 (USA).ips
I know you’re excited about that new Mario 3D AllStars. Having all three is cool but I’m impressed how clean the games look.
Adam been watching you since the beginning. Great video! Love my everdrive I think its a 3.0 and its amazing. If you love n64 its a no brainer.
Micro SD Cards are TOO SMALL
That's what she said.
For flash carts, I also think I prefer regular SD cards with that push push mechanism.
Yeah n64 👍
I got the v3 one of these back in 2015. I hardly ever used it but it is good to know i have have my entire library of games on one cartridge.
My understanding is the Auto-patch feature requires the patch files to be named using the CRC of the ROM to patch, rather than relying on a match between the patch and ROM filename. There are tools to get the CRC of ROM files but it's a big hassle.
Cool video tech talk
You CAN run 64DD roms directly from the Everdrive. You need to look for them, however. There's also a weird arcade machine that uses the N64 hardware at its core called Aleck64 and you can even run those arcade titles on the Everdrive
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out why they wouldn't work.
@@AdamKoralik I think you may have to download prepatched 64dd roms BUT I could be wrong because it's been years since I had an Everdrive 64
Yeah, I just downloaded the Smokemonster pack and everything you mentioned works fine on my X7. I believe the 64DD roms are pre-patched as well.
@@bruceg22000 yes! That's what it's called. I was actively tinkering with the 64DD stuff as it was being released to the scene. Like I said earlier its been years since I've had an Everdrive, unfortunately :( I wish I could get another one. Hopefully this helps Adam get them working on his :D
@@bruceg22000 where did u find the smoke monster pack?
The PAL comment was unexpected especially as you mentioned Goldeneye specifically. Goldeneye is a game where the PAL version has some nice improvements. The PAL version runs full screen and the NTSC used black boarders to shrink the effective screen size. The larger effective screen size of the PAL version combined with PALs higher native resolution also made for subtle but noticeable improved graphics. They also managed to reduced the extreme slowdown for the PAL version and both versions topped out at under 25fps so there was no inherent need for a display with a higher refresh rate.
I like turtles
@Thundercracker I like sea turtles, my favorite kind of turtle is the leatherback sea turtle.
What is your opinion on the Reeves Turtle?
@@embracerodusk2537 I like it.
I plan on installing the REsaturn PSU mod by myself since it doesn't require soldering and apparently taking the case of my RG-JX(x) Saturn is relatively easy, especially since the PSU in attached to the bottom side of the case meaning my Saturn is thankfully VA1 and not 0. I actually can't wait to get started when my kit gets here.
I'll be downloading hacked SNES and N64 games and load em onto the flash carts. I have the previous line of Everdrive carts for N64 and NES and love them. My Genesis and SNES flash carts are quite old but i got them for a bargain and they work well for my needs. Flash carts are a god send these days with sky high retro game prices. Great video!
You don't need the auto patch feature, you can pre patch every game you want on the PC before, they will work even in the old flashcart. The auto patch feature is just a convenience so you can update your patches without repatching every room.
Adam is by far my favorite youtuber
Adam the Taz Express game for some reason the default option is for all sounds to be off. If you go into the options menu of Taz Express you can turn up the volume for the sound effects and the music and then the sound does work! I have actually played this game on the old everdrive with sound and it was fine.
O_o
A while back, a US Prototype Version of this game was released. Of I remember correctly the game was 100% finished. Found it in the krikzz forums
Interesting to see a video on the Everdrive 64, I was literally just getting ready to buy one... I wanted it to play prototypes of Nintendo 64 games on an actual N64.
I would like to see a video about the disabled AA with the mClassic. :D Great Video Adam.
Nintendo 64 has been on my mind this pass week and then you uploaded this video is great timing. I've been on a retro gaming quest for the past 2 years to make all my retro consoles HD compatible. FPGA based replacements is my main solution. I sold my original N64 back in early 2001, so probably I will spend the money and get the Ultra HDMI modded N64. I really want an FPGA based N64 but that is not going to be happening anytime soon. Yes, I saw your other videos about N64, but the Ultra HDMI video looks great and seems to be the best solution for me. Later I will buy the Everdrive. I knew about it for a decade now but never owned one.
Also emulation of N64's can be painful. Mostly having problems with the controller layouts not working. Too buggy. Emulation in general kinda sucks. I want a finished product I can hook up to a TV and play my games! Not spending my weekend trying to figure out why nothing is working properly.
Watching your video right now Adam, haven't got to the end yet - but nope. You don't need a DD addon to run the N64 DD roms.
They just completely run on the Everdrive.
Nice work, mate!
Swagger with the N64 DD! I always remember the local video game store showing off the Mario 64 opening screen. Sad times that I trades so many retro items like game gear tv tuner etc for a handful of sub standard new console releases. Dont get me started on the other store with a comic book guy type looking employee who liked to rip you off and touch all your games with his donut sticky fingers! I do miss those times though of UK independent video game sellers in my town....
Blockbuster! N64 , man can things get any better around here? smooth vibes man , smooth dang vibes
Just preordered my XSX
Big papa style piece of kit. Amazing money saver
You know with this and better after market controllers. It's a really good time to look into buying an N64 if you want one.
I thought of you whilst chopping logs in Shenmue 3
Mundande work makes you meditate about the people who are important to you.
super helpful
This is the only Everdrive I've bought, my reasoning being the not perfect emulation available and wanting to play on original hardware/controller. It's great to have access to some translated roms and other extras like the convrted 64DD games. Kudos to the N64 hacker community!
I want to buy one for my N64. It's worth it because most N64 games that are NOT sports are 25 a piece or more. If N64 emulation was perfect I wouldn't need a flashcart.
Still, it saves money considering the prices of the original super smash Bros, the original paper Mario, and the first 3 Mario party games.
is your gameshark actually bricked or do you need a keycode game to unlock it perhaps? i thought mine was dead one time and i used diddy kong racing and it booted up and then the gameshark worked just an example
Would love to hear your thoughts on the all the next gen news dropping lately, wondering if you're going to do any videos on it.
Probably.
Hey Adam, are you planning to mod your n64 for RGB or UltraHDMI functionality? I installed Tim Worthington's N64RGB mod and flashed the chip so I have hardware de-blur, 15 bit color mode, and the ability to reset back to the Everdrive main menu. You might also want to check out the Smokemonster Packs because they add fan translations, homebrew, 64DD and Aleck 64 support, and are available for all the Everdrive carts.
I've done videos on both actually.
I’d got the everdrive 2.5 but seeing as I got a n64 advance mod I’ve added an x7 too.
I used your code on retrotower 👍
I have this everdrive and the only downside I've found is that some third party gamecube style joysticks from ebay don't work properly on it. I have to use the dpad with mine until I load a game then the joystick works.
I have a Everdrive 2.5 but I can't even just select the game and then go to the patches. It just has the start option.
very cool 😎
I just ordered the n8:a few days ago
Shame to hear that the F-Zero Expansion didn't work perfectly. I'd still really love to be able to enjoy that someday.
Honestly I find the N64 controller to be great for NES games, Gameboy and GBA games also feel great to me. It must be nice A and B buttons.
Video for the N64 .. places the DD in the table just to FLEX 💪🏻
well now that I looked into it completely the DD was part of the video . So it’s justified!! 😂👌🏻
I'm 3 years late to the party but someone linked me to it asking about 64DD support:
I see in the video that you tried to load *.ndd files which are 64DD disk images. THOSE DO NOT WORK, only ports of these games into a cartridge file format works (so *.z64 or *.n64 and the likes). Those were made by Zoinkity (unlike a comment who may say I did, I never did those) in like, around 2015 if I remember correctly. It goes without saying, but an Expansion Pak is required to play them, and you won't get an error if you're missing it.
Currently, the only N64 flashcart that does actually support 64DD disk images is SummerCart64 (SC64) which is still under development for the menu. It's also open source and could definitely improve further.
Razor! You maniac. I love the N64!
you didn't mention that the X7 also has a real time clock which none of the other versions did, i'm not sure exactly how many games if any other than animal crossing used this but if you're into animal crossing and get your hands on the english translation patch or english translated rom then it's a useful feature to have for that.
Didn't know.
@@AdamKoralik well i guess now you're gonna have to test it hahaha
May I suggest if you like Smash 64 is Smash Remix. Its a fan hack. Adding characters that weren't in Smash 64 originally and its amazing.
Thank you everdrive64. You've been plugged into my console for about 7 years and I've used you twice. Still, nice to know the option is there. :)
I was actually planning to buy this back in March. Then quarantine happened. Oh well.
Adam Super Mario 64 just got ported to the DREMCAST! (PS2 too) . I'm surprised you haven't make a video about it yet.
Didn't that happen like 15 years ago? Some guy got it running via emulation on the N64, but it didn't run smoothly.
@@AdamKoralik pretty sure he is talking about a source port. So it sould be running natively at full speed.
@@ChrisBurnes That would be quite something wouldn't it.
As someone from PAL land I cannot tell you how awesome it is to run ntsc 60hrtz games.
Great video, please update with gameshark code text file link, and an mClassic comparison.
This far unfortunately, I don't have them.
I don't think you turned the Auto Patcher option on in the option menu
So are the games included? Or do you have do download the games online and then use the Cartidge?
You have to get them yourself.
You can run these 64DD games that have been converted for use on Everdrives: 64dd.org/dumps_p.html F-Zero X Expansion even has an english translation.
I have a PAL N64 console and if i wanna play NTSC games they work , but there are some kind of blurry rainbow shady things around the character models. Do i have to mod my console to display the games correctly or is it automatically gone with the new Everdrive Version ? I mean , can i transform my console with the new version into a 100 % region free one ?
Sorry dude, I've never heard of that.
The cartridge itself does work on PAL consoles, but I can't speak to that "blurry" think you're talking about.
Yo are you gonna make video talking about which next gen console your gonna get?
I intend to get both.
I really wished Nintendo would add 64dd versions of games to the e shop. Even back then on the Wii
One instance where you might want to go with the PAL version over the NTSC one would be Doom 64
The PAL version actually has a proper brightness so you can see what you are doing compared to the pitch blackness that is the NTSC release.
I also believe Space Station Silicon Valley had some bugs fixed in the PAL release.
Like that uncollectible collectable that would prevent anyone from getting 100%
Or the issue the game had if an Expansion Pak was inserted.
At least I'm pretty sure these things were fixed.
Yo Adam, I think you have a bad romset or something, I can run the DD games on mine just fine.
Did you ever get the Shark codes?
Can anybody tell me why there are options missing from the X7 that were on the V3? I can't change the menu resolution any more.
This may be a stupid question, but does the everdrive come with the games? Or do I have to find and download them myself?
You have to get them yourself.
Hey I understand the Everdrive doesn't come with game ROMs included, so where do we download n64 game ROMs from to be put onto the micro SD card?
Legally, I can't tell you that. But...Google will.
2:50 - Don’t you mean you can use it on a NTSC or a PAL console. Because JP and US systems are the same hardware except the tabs.
I believe I said that repeatedly, yes.
I have the old everdrive but every time I run Ridge Racer on it, it says data is corrupted and when I save and turn the system off, the game save is gone next time because I get the save data corrupted screen again. Why????
Not sure to be honest. :/
do you still need a controller pak for games that requiring saving to it??
That's a good question, I assume so.
one tiny feature you missed Adam was the ability to Alek64 Japanese arcade games.
Yeah, I was only just made aware of that. Very cool.
off topic but are you going to do a 8th gen recap video after the new systems come out or no since I believe you count switch as a 8th gen system i think?
Probably.
Switch will be divisive no matter what.
@@AdamKoralik Its hard to classify because on a power scale the difference between the 3ds and it is massive and the systems being 6 years apart is enough to classify a new gen in my book also I consider switch more handheld because not only is there a switch lite that doesn't switch but the psp go had a dock in 2009 and nobody calls the psp a hybrid or console, but against the wii u just a minor jump and it released only 4 years and 4 months after the wii u which I know for sega thats enough for a new gen back in the 90's but tech isn't seeing the huge jumps nowadays like it was where saturn was 95 and dreamcast was 98 and huge jump in graphics between the two compared to wii u and switch. I consider the Switch Nintendo's 9th gen offering but I don't look down upon the opinion of it being another 8th gen system because like you said its divisive!
I have the cheap ED64Plus it’s a hit or miss, but it was less than $70.00. I may need to upgrade sometime.
Did you upgrade the firmware?
Really? With the latest updates it pretty much plays everything just fine
YMG_Xzavyer The Hedgehog the blue screen where it says the one on the website that is on the cartridge or some other website?
TacticalPower88 hmm again I was wondering maybe the website on the cart is showing an outdated website. Is there another one?
@@JolliAllGenGamer Other. People have made updates that make the Plus act more like the accrual Everdrive
so im a little behind..but if I buy the everdrive will it have all the games downloaded on the cartridge or do I do it? Im trying to play virtual pro wrestling 2 in english
You have to find and add games yourself.
@@AdamKoralik how do I add them
7:34 Why would you disable the anti-aliasing and then add an mClassic? The mClassic anti-aliases everything.
Because the color and image fed into the mClassic would be better, then the mClassic handles the anti-aliasing.
@@AdamKoralik That's as maybe, but you're still putting anti-aliasing *back* by adding an mClassic. The N64 has two anti-aliasing modes. The Gameshark disables the primary anti-aliasing while RGB mods and the UltraHDMI disable the secondary anti-aliasing. Some N64 fans like to use both simultaneously to produce an ultra sharp picture. But adding a device with its own forced anti-aliasing like the mClassic kind of defeats the purpose of disabling the N64's anti-aliasing.
Hi Adam, will you be doing a review on RetroActive's 64Drive once those are back in stock? The 64Drive (while the Everdrive X7 has recently been more Homebrew Dev friendly) was made to be N64 Homebrew Developer Friendly from the start.
Also you should get the latest version of the NEON Nes Emulator (of which you can find on Github) - it is improved over the version that comes pre-packed with your everdrive (better Mapper support, better over all under the hood code changes from the author).
There is also a fairly good supported Game Boy/GameBoy Color Emulator (and easy to use Converter for it) called GB64. For anything else relating to things you'd want to use/check out for N64 Homebrew or Everdrive related things - please visit n64 (dot) dev (there's also a thriving N64 Homebrew Scene on Discord...)
Never heard of it before to be honest.
@@AdamKoralik Yeah, I honestly think there wasn't that much in the way of reviewers back in 2011/2012 covering it - which is part of the reason why you may not have heard of it. The creator has stated that he is bringing it back soon though (with the pandemic and everything halting production). Not sure if you use Discord or are interested in new games for the console, but there's a Homebrew Discord specifically for N64 if you want to check it out: discord.gg/KERXwaT
The only game I would get a real hardware N64 for is _Pokémon Puzzle League_ because the cutscenes look noticeably wonky on emulator. And even then, I'm not even that good at the switch match-3 tile puzzle game it's based off of, *Panel De Pon* a.k.a. _Tetris Attack_
Its so tight
Far better than Doctor v64
man i always wana do this my n64 needs love to as for codes im sure if you did some digging online you’ll find them that’s how i got my perfect dark and golden eye codes
Taz Express - just go into options and turn up volume. It defaults to 0 for some bizzare reason
wut
@@AdamKoralik try it, I just did :)
If the N64's entire library is less than 20GB...It can fit perfectly fine on a Wii U or Switch without an SD Card!
4:36 You're lucky you didn't kill your N64 too! I heard a combination of Everdrive and Gameshark can damage the console too.
"FIGURE IT OUTTTTTTTTTTT!"
Nice review of the ver 7. I got back in 2018 directly from Krikzz a 2.5 Everdrive that was extremely revised before it was released. Mine came with the region free case and the Ultra CIC II chip plus the PAL and NTSC switch. There were differences between the 2.5 and 3, the 2.5 you HAVE to reset the console for any games that save to the cartridge/ SD Card where the ver 3 with the battery there was no need for resetting but added benefit is you can play Animal Forest (Japan) cause of the RTC. You can use gameshark codes BUT catch 22 you're required to have a expansion pack or the game won't boot. You can even run rom patches without prepatching them. There is a website that I use when I want to get Gameshark codes is gamehacking.org
I see you are wearing Bend's (Oregon) t-shirt.
Trying to format these damn things. No help here…🐸🍺🔪🔥
I have the Mclassic with the Ever Drive with AA off. And it looks like a big mess. There are two ways to remove the AA from the game. The 1st one is by entering the gameshark code, but this way only eliminates partially the AA. Kind of like dubbing it down a bit. The 2nd way is downloading a program on your computer that will literally patch the games with 100% AA off. I have tried both. But the problem is that some games literally need the AA. Others do not. Now, those games will defenetly look better. I have 2 folders on my Everdrive X7. One with the original roms, and one folder with the AA patch games. That way I can go back and forth seeying which ones looks better. But the Mclassic will not fix the AA issues from the 64 games because most of the games where build with the AA feature in mind. I hope this helps anyone wondering. Or want to play arround with patching games.
(Third Comment Update) for the people that are having issues with the compatibility of their TVs because of their TV brand and the OSSC. I have my N64 2x line double = 480p and for my PS1 I have a 3x line double = 720p. Now I have the Samsung QFN TV which supports every resolution from 240p all the way up to 4k. For some of you that are having issues with comparability on your TV. Plug your OSSC to the cheap Scart Converter box which allows any resolution to be thrown at it and upscale it to 720p or 1080p. Problem solved. The only console I recommend using the Mclassic with the OSSC is the PS2 because of its graphics. Like I mentioned before, the Mclassic will not support nor process scan lines for older consoles that do need them to have a clear image. Keep in mind that every console from before the NES up to the PS1 games where made with scan lines in mind. The HD Scart Converter Box does process scan lines from the OSSC witch is fantastic. So if you are running you retro consoles in 480p or 720p, now you can upscale them to 1080p with the Scart Box. The HD Scart Box has an HDMI input support apart from the Scart Cable. So it works perfect. For the PS1 the scanlines have to be on the Top and for the N64 scan lines have to be on the Bottom. Hope this helps anyone having compatability issues.
On the new one do you have to hit the reset button to save?
On the console?
What's the console you've used the most in 2020?
Xbox One.
@@AdamKoralik Interesting. I suppose it did become pretty versatile. Best versions of 8th gen games (at least everything after 2016, a lot of games didn't get patched) , plus a bunch of X360 & OG Xbox titles available as well.

I finally finished KOTOR and am about halfway through KOTOR II on my Xbox One X.
I have the v2.5 model was thinking about the upgrade but dont know if it's worth it or not
I’m in the same position. Selling and replacing is an interesting proposition. I heard that the two main differences are not having to reset to save on the X7, and the X7 has a built-in real-time clock, which you’ll need if you want to play Dōbutsu no Mori (Animal Forest). If that is the case I’m not sure it’s worth it.
