- When 162 games isn't enough. In 1980 the Dodgers and Astros finished tied for first place of the western division, forcing a rare one game playoff for all the marbles.
Its weird to see the Astros in the American League these days. A preview of the 2017 World Series 37 years before it actually happened. It may happen again this year.
My dad took me out of school (5th grade) to be at this game. He said it was a sick day. As he put it, “I’m sick of missing things like this!” Even as a lifelong Dodger fan this is a favorite memory. Thanks for posting.
That is awesome 👍
Well the Dodgers don't give many winning memories so I can Understand!
Doug Harvey. What an umpire. He single handedly stops a bench clearing brawl with the wave of his hands. Then he takes control when the fans start throwing things on the field.
I'll tell you what around this era Toni Tennille was one hot piece of ace
Hell yes she was
Joe Nekiro pitched the game the game of his life here!
Niekro won his 20th game that day.
He did another good job of not getting caught doctoring the ball.
I still can't believe that after losing 3 straight to LA the Astros came back and won ..Houston fans will always love Joe Niekro and Art Howe....
Yep...
Neikro did another good job of not getting caught doctoring the ball
He was a real pro...@@AMEER-114-
Well, there goes the rest of my Friday morning.
Thanks!
1980. It was a simpler time.
In the 1970s and 80s, the baseball was better, people were more relaxed, and the women were more beautiful
Lasorda had Pedro Guerrero on the bench, read to pinch hit at 58:53 and he sends up Rudy Law.... SMH.
Oh man, the only two top-of-the-innings that we're missing, are the two innings that Fernando Valenzuela pitched! The only blemish on an otherwise perfect upload ...
it's a real shame too. it would have been great to see a young Fernando foreshadowing what was to come the following year.
And mono sound
Al Michael’s with a huge mistake on the first inning. He said Hatcher had a 5-4-3 double play option. No he didn’t. There was nobody on first base when that ball was hit to him.
And uecker with a huge mistake in the 4th inning. Puhl was out at second base attempting to steal.
@@brandonvandelden7972 Puhl was safe.
Watched part of the ABC telecast of this game on my 11th birthday (I live in California & didn't skip school). Dear Bob Uecker: Tony Tennille was a hot act at the time
Dodgers may have lost to the Astros in the 1980 Wild Card game,
but a year later, the Dodgers went on to win the 1981 World Series.
and would beat the Astros in the LDS en route to said World Series title.
FIY, it was called a Divisional Playoff, or just a "one-game playoff" to decide the division champion. The term wild card didn't exist in baseball back then.
If it were three divisions like you have now these would be the division winners in the national league:
NL East: Philadelphia (91-71)
NL Central: Cincinnati (89-73)
NL West: Houston (93-70)
NL Wild Cards: LA (92-71), Montreal (90-72) (Wild Card Game in LA)
NLDS matchups would have been:
Cincinnati v Philadelphia
LA/Montreal v Houston
That would’ve been interesting
@@svetcovladich9996 Actually it was just an extra game added to the season to decide the National League West. . No playoff. No wild card.
@@chuckwest7045 Yes, you can see it as an extra game, but it was officially called a 1-game playoff by MLB and the media in those days when there was a tie for the division title after 162 games. Here is how it's listed in Wikipedia as an example in the first paragraph: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_Los_Angeles_Dodgers_season
The Astros would have won it all if they had J.R. Richard the whole year. A strong team that year.
Exactly, unfortunately they wore poor Nolan Ryan out trying to carry the load. It showed against Philadelphia.
JR Richard was an incredible baseball player. Very sad he had health issues. I saw him pitch a couple times at Dodgers Stadium
Had Don Wilson not tragically passed away, he would have been on the team too.
@@Form44208 Not necessarily a lot can happen in 5 years
Dusty baker. The current Astros manager.
Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz!
Wow...an entertainer actually showing pride in singing the National Anthem ; and wanting to get the crowd involved!! And then we get Fergie... 🤮
Amen
Well, here's the difference.....Toni Tenille was a professional who loved baseball. Fergie was a clown who couldn't sing to save her ass.
@@harrykargenian110Here's the difference: Toni Tenille was, as a RUclipsr best described, an "ace." Fergie was simply an ass.
Al Michaels & Bob Uecker w the call 4 ABC!
My Dodgers have been blowing it since before I was born.
Not in 1981, 1988 or 2020 !
They need to fire Dave Roberts and get a real game manager like Tommy Lasorda!
They ain't called Dem Bums for nothing..lol
Nice to see the players singing the national anthem…
October 6, 1980. The day I was born.
Yes the Valenzuala appearance was one of his first games way cool.I wish they would have made a card of him at Lodi
Bob uecker commentating this game.
God, do I remember this series so well! The Dodgers should have been in the World Series that year, had Lasorda not started that dolt Dave Goltz. 😟
you know i was thinking that very same thing when i was uploading this. he was such a disaster for the dodgers.
The Dodgers were lucky to be in this game. They got late-inning home runs by Ferguson on Friday, Garvey on Saturday and Cey on Sunday, so they were all close games.
The Astros were the better team as evidenced by having a 3 game lead. It wasn't Goltz' fault that the defense made 2 errors.
There's no guarantee the Dodgers would've beaten the Phillies and/or the Royals if they got that far.
@@John-tr6of Mmm. I don't know if I can agree that the Astros were better. Ron Cey was hurt and didn't play in this game. He was sorely missed. Russell missed the entire series as well as previous games due to injury. Bob Welch was also injured or he would have started this game (or another one in the series) instead of Goltz. Or possibly Fernando could have started but he had been already pitched 2 innings Friday and 2 on Sunday.
However, I'm not sure if any of that would have mattered with the way Niekro pitched that day.
Remember the old adage in baseball - you are only as good as your next day's starter.
@@mrt1626 The Astros were missing JR Richard.
@@chuckwest7045 Doesn't matter. Houston won this playoff game and the division anyway.
Damn, the Dodgers got clobbered.
The NEW Chevy Monte Carlo??
Jay Johnstone a great fastball hitter in his days....he usallly clobbered it
If you ever wondered if Lou Pinella ever appeared in a Sasson Jeans commercial, you see for yourself at 2:16:52
It's Always been great to see the Dodgers FAIL.
GO PHIGHTINS!!!
Ehhh...this loss falls on Joe Ferguson and Tommy LaSorda...Ferguson drops a tag at the plate and makes several poor throws to Second (so where was Steve Yeager for this game?)...Lasorda keeps Goltz in the game way too long...dude had numerous arm troubles throughout the season and was good for only so many pitches before he bombed out...should have brought Sutcliffe in after Howe’s homer...sad way for the Dodgers to end their season
Dodger stadium is the Fenway Park of the NL, an old Beautiful field with character....
Wrigley field
No it isn't, Kellie! How dare you say that about Dodger Stadium! TAKE THAT BACK!!!!! 😠😠😠😠😠
No it's not it's wrigley field
WTF Guys!!! Dodgers Stadium, Wrigley and Fenway don't hold a candle to Candlestick.
@@dariowiter3078 Ha Ha sorry, i've been to BOTH Dodger stadium AND Wrigley, and Dodger stadium is MUCH nicer! better warmer weather in LA,!, better food! better looking Women! and a better all around view of the field! only negative is the heavier Traffic UGH!! a lot more people in LA than Northern Chicago, guess you gotta take the good with the bad...
Deodorant on sale at the park for the overnighters?
Nice upload, but couldn't you have included the footage of Fernando Valenzuela's relief appearance?
1980. Is this really a 1 game playoff? The tie-breaker game? Or game 163?
it really counted as the 163rd game of the season.
Tie breaker games counted in the regular season standings(and stats as well(
Dodgers beat them in the playoffs the next year, en route to a fair-and-square WS win.
Valenzuela would have started the game
LaSorda thought too much on this one.
As a Dodgers fan, I am forever disappointed by the lack of a strike three call at 50:35 ....Goltz was screwed on that one.
Pitch was clearly high when it crossed the plate
The first time we owned the Dodgers. Many more to come
PBP: Al Michaels
The Dodgers ran out of momentum. They were flying high prior to this game. Astros took it when it counted bottom line…
What happened to the top of the 6th inning? 😐
all i can say is "sometimes it be dat way".
@@sportsrevisited9699 Actually it looks alright considering it's been nearly 40 years!!!
same result as the 2017 World Series, Astros won on the road!
Perhaps the Asterisks didn't cheat in 1980.
FU!
Did the Astros have sign stealing / video signals in 1980 as well???
TIE BREAKER
These was one of many fuck ups by lasorda..goltz have nothing to do starting this game as too not playing guerrero...
Taking on the Phillies
Tiebreaker
My God! The Dodgers lost this one-game playoff in the 1st inning! UGH!!!!! 😤😤😤😤😤
@Ted Harrington to cheaters
@@antoniohernandez6590 waaaaaaa 😭
As Warner Wolf, a long time sportscaster would say, "You could've turned your (TV) sets off there."
just like the 2017 World Series, Astros smoked the Dodgers in LA.
Except the 2017 World Series is no longer considered "legitimate" anymore. Thank your CHEATIN' ASSTROS for that bungled mess, lol!!!

You can see here at 2:12:11 Steve Garvey telling Tommy Lasorda he will make sure the Dodgers win the World Series next year.
