Episode 3! These videos came at a quite a little cost to myself (& my camera guy, Eli, who I dragged thru the jungle for this series).
It would mean so much to us if you just hit “Like” & “Subscribe” (if you haven’t already).
    More to come!!

Really enjoying your work. I’m retiring from the fire dept here in about a year and I’m hoping to come with you on some of your travels. I’m fluent in Spanish and I’m a licensed paramedic in the state of California. I have access to equipment we may need if one of the crew members gets injured. But mostly, I’m completely infatuated with my Mexican ancestry and would love to experience the meso American buildings and lifestyles.

Just like to add a couple of facts, The Maya word for 'canyon' or 'moat' is Becán, and indeed a 2km moat snakes its way around this must-visit Maya site. Seven causeways provide access across the moat to the 12-hectare site, within which are the remains of three separate architectural complexes. It may be the only Maya town that had a moat surrounding it. P.S. Beds? we used hammocks...

Very cool. Thanks for showing us.
About 30 years ago I got to climb a pyramid in Belize, and we walked around the jungle for a couple hours looking at different pyramids and other structures. The view over the jungle from the top of the pyramid was amazing, it's flat there and I could see green for miles. It was beautiful. And super impressive. That's a lot of effort in the tropical climate. I remember faces carved in the stone, and we saw a very old stone Mayan calendar.
On the subject of roots tearing up the buildings, there are a couple species of ficus known as strangler figs that are native there. Other species are native to Asia. They can start up high in another tree, sending roots to the ground and growing up from there, eventually killing the host tree. They can grow from the ground, and if they start in a crack in a building those roots are very hard it. Other riits are guilty too but ficus roots are probably the worst. Rubber trees are in the same family, so are edible fig trees and banyan trees. Central and South America have invasive ficus that have the same potential to destroy things. In india the roots are stretched across rivers and woven to make natural bridges.

This is amazing work, beautiful. Thank you.
Years back, I read Biography of Cortés. How he destroyed aztek empire with handful of men driven by greed for gold. Murdering and slaving natives. Natives were powerless to defend their city. Aztek priest complained how their magic didn't work against the new God that Spanish had brought. Using their own children as sacrifice. As the king tried to escape Cortés soldiers were shocked to Aztek priest and servants carrying babies that were barbecued. This made Spanish more upset. Saddest part of the conquest Spaniards burnt close to all Aztek books. Claiming them to be pagan magic writings. Maybe there's a hidden tunnels that still hides the books.

These are rebuilt, & overhauled, so many times, yet understanding the differnt layers is quite challenging to us. There must be literally 1000's of rooms still hidden within this Mountain of Stone. GPR or actually digging underneath the lowest levels here, are needed. Otherwise, speculation will continue.

Thank you very much. We were around Becan for two days. And yes, there is not a whole lot written about it as a whole.
But search “Becan Archaeological Site in Campeche, Mexico” & you’ll find a ton of sources.
No oral history (at-least from ancient times) as it was all burned during conquest… which sucks

Interesting to see things that normally would rarely feature. Glad you're alive after the jungle expedition 😅. With the filming, it would be good to sometimes see the architecture focused for a bit longer, or a still for a few seconds on screen to take it all in.

Saw you on Forbidden Frontier the other day. These videos are fun. I like all the different camera angles - it's like an exploration narrative (even though technically I know there's a bunch of cuts and reshoots where you probably climb the same darn rock 5 times on some occasions!).
How come there are horizontal lines shearing the footage when it pans around? Low FPS? Sharp Motion-blur, or lack thereof? I'm not a camera guy at all, but it's grating to see it.

  • @East10Outpost
    @East10Outpost 8 месяцев назад

How did you discern how recent the bones were? Because of the light glare on them its hard to see from our end, but did they appear fresh to some degree in person? Its interesting to think about that continuing today. Thanks luke for really being the only person holding the explorers torch right now. Keep the flame lit till it grows👏🏻

Great work, but might I suggest that in future you get your camera operator to shoot b-roll of what you're describing so we can cut to what you're looking at while you're describing it? Its very difficult getting a sense of scale, detail and perspective when the camera is on you all the time.
Not a criticism as such, just want to see what you're describing.
