- Explaining what we know (& don't know) about the mysterious history attached to the Antikythera Mechanism: who created it? Who could have been in involved in it's creation? Are there others? If so, what happened to them? In this video, I'll do my best to answer all of these videos & more.

This device changed my entire views on the ancient world when I found an article about it being scanned. This confirmed my thoughts that people of the past were just as intelligent as we are today.
I've been watching a channel about a guy recreating the Antikythera & it's honestly staggering the amount of capabilities that is has. I can only imagine constructing it back then - it might take an entire lifetime to perfect that device. Utterly incredible.
@@lukecaverns I know exactly what video you are speaking about. I've watched that reconstruction a few times and the interview with the clockmaker who helped figure out the gear specifications. Honestly breath taking.
you can also try reading some ancient literature, like Illiad or Odyssey and you'll see that people have not changed. They think the same way, act the same way, it is just the surrounding that is changing.
People were both intelligent and inept, just like today. Knowledge is power. Ignorance (not knowing) is vast. Leaders encourage followers to seek knowledge. They don’t enslave them. So who and how were these great civilizations actually constructed. Where are the factories making the tiles, timber, bricks, blocks, bronze statues, etc?
@jonlonglastname can you reference video and article please? Would love to delve into it.
I’ve been to the museum in Athens where this item is on display. It is practically hidden inside the museum. I had to basically go on a scavenger hunt to find it. I find it odd it’s not more celebrated especially by the Greeks!
Suppressed by local cabinets
Probably because they can't explain it.
It's actually in a prominent position and not hidden at all.
It has its own exhibit that is very well advertised...
Best video so far.
love it dude...sharing with a professional historian I know
Great video Luke, two thumbs up!
Thank you very much for your support. Any topic requests or burning questions for the Members-Only videos this month?
@Clickspring does an amazing job at reconstructing the Antikythera Mechanism, and the methods and tools used to create it.
Why people are unaware of this is beyond. SUPER fascinating device!! Another fab vid Luke!
It’s honestly mind blowing isn’t it? The fact that it was not only far ahead of its time in 150 BC, it was STILL ahead of its time when it was discovered in the early 1900’s.
Absolutely insane.
@@lukecavernshave a look at the channel clickspring.
He is studying the device and rebuilding one with tradition tools of the time, hand building the tools to hand build the device as best as the scans & literature can provide. It is still an ongoing series. Might be interesting for you.
Just seen you talk with Gary( Nerdrotic)👍
good stuff Luke 🍺
Great video!
There is a more concrete reason the device is associated with Archimedes. There are references to a now lost text by Archimedes detailing the cobstruction of astronomical calculators.
Cicero, for one, mentions such a device and attribites it to Archimedes.
Great video man!
Awesome video Luke! I love this artifact, shows human ingenuity at its best! Likely a small team of scientists, engineers and artisans worked together in Greece to produce such wonders.
Another banger, thanks Luke!
Awesome mang
Lettttta goooooo Luke you need to talk with Matt bro 👀come on
Doing a good job.
I'm conflicted as this item so closely resembles the LDS "Myth" of the Liahona. Also, It could have been HERON; a name I didn't hear on your list of inventors.
Love the work you are doing keep it up.
This is a good idea on where the Antikythera Mechanism. I do like what you are saying about this.
600th like Luke.
Good work, my friend! It’s interesting that the same functions of the Antikythera (the cycles it tracked) essentially work like the Mayan calendrical system, sans the Metonic cycle.
Just a fun idea I had, but is is plausible that Archimedes escaped with his most prized possession and out of a cruel twist of fate, the ship he escaped on never made it to port?
Hey Luke: have you been to Cyprus? I’m going in March
The gears, & ratios of this Complex, Universal, Mechanism, could actually be from a earlier version. Since there is no other comparable versions, then chances are; (like the light bulb): it probably just was discovered.
but when was it made? we know when it sank, but not when it was made. was it a legacy device or technology? was it one of a kind? its such an anomaly and it ignites the imagination
00:52 coins 😂
Bring back the moustache!
It's creation is estimated at 3 to 4 centuries BC. So it's also possible the Greeks brought the knowledge back from their frequent learning trips to Egypt.
Great video, awesome job.
I like your open mind about these things. You don't downplay the significance of it, nor praise it as some super mega high tech atlantian lost relic. It's a strange piece that should be studied and we may never know it's true origins or purpose
I spent decades in the United States developing three libraries. All three destroyed by people who joyfully destroyed my housing and treat people as objects of sex abuse. My first and best library donated to a Roman Catholic Monastery destroyed identified as a "bribe". Ten years later my second library destroyed with the destruction of my employment and housing possibly based in government harassment. Again ten years later my third library destroyed by women of Organized Crime in Connecticut. The destruction of knowledge and value is timeless.
So used to America feels like a different channel
All the lost info burned to the ground

Ooo I'm super keen to watch this, especially after watching the new Indiana Jones. Hey Luke, thanks for the recommendation of the Bob Brier Ancient Egypt series you mentioned on Brothers of the Serpent.
I'm listening to it on Audible now, very interesting. I owe you a donation, what's the best way for 1 off donations?
Love your work, keep it up. Say hi to Anyextee from Edfu next time you see him, that guy is awesome.
