All of BoA's songs are masterpieces, so I can't choose the top five, I’m serious 😅 After listening to her Korean, Japanese, and American albums for over 20 years, I think all the songs are perfect.
I agree with everything you've said in this video. Her career is that of a queen, there's something to be said about her legacy which she up holds very highly. Been following her since 2003 and when I tell you each release just got better and better with time, it was sad watching her stardom fade, but at the same time she started to take breaks which where very well deserved. She made the system more easy for idols, her and rain broke down barriers for newer generations, and at that international fans to gain access to kpop. It's hard to watch people question who she is, but she is such a gem. I as a fan have to remind myself that BoAs talents will always speak more then her achievements, her producing credits and writing credit on her own songs are amazing, her dancing is the best in the industry (she is a highly respected dancer) and her vocals are still in tip top shape for someone that's been doing this for 22 years.
many make BoA and other artists less for not having been as popular in the United States as Bts OR BLACKPINK, because they "made kpop very famous" but they don't understand that back then, it was very difficult and despite that BoA achieved a lot
You don't know how much I wish I could like this much more than once! BoA is not just my favorite KPop performer. She's my favorite performer, period. This woman has accomplished SO much in the industry that the current generation of fans is either oblivious to or just doesn't care about, that it's infuriating to me. THANK YOU for putting this out and letting everyone know what an amazing performer, singer, dancer, producer, lyricist, composer, actress, etc this woman is.
She is what brought me into Kpop 🥲 Still remember when I heard her song Spark. I was like WHO IS THIS?? Her performances are so striking like possibly even better than Britney, and she’s so young. I was obsessed with anime and everything Japanese at the time and when I heard she was in the Japanese music market against artist like Utada I was like, yep she must be the real deal. I started listening to more of her songs and was hooked, especially to the dancing. It was my favorite. I was always trying to learn the choreos 😂 After that it was history, I had entered SM entertainments universe and never looked back haha. SUJU, SNSD, Shinee, TVXQ, Fx became my most favorite 2nd gen groups. And from there of course I learned of the other companies and groups/artists: Rain, Bigbang, 2pm, MissA, 2NE1, BlackPink, BTS, GOT7, Beast, Block B, BAP, Fx, I could go on. She really made it for me. Glad I’m still a Kpop stan till this day because of her
BoA will always be my forever idol. I always knew her as a jpop artist first and I still listen to her songs even now. She's an inspiration for a lot of young girls in that generation and deserves more love. She really was 10 years too early for this industry. If the internet/technology was as prevalent as it is now, she would've had so much more exposure.
I’m a diehard fan of her since 2006, I can confirm that she is the one who affect to Korean economics cash flow, a step to japanese market in early 2000 is the big success of her and all of entire Korean Pop since then. More over about enconomics issue, she is a relationship bridge of Korean-Japanese (as well as TVXQ which is a 5 male-BoA-quality) which paved the way to many Korean pop to easily get into Japanese music market
This video is very well done! Thank you for your thoughtful analysis. It touches on many important points while highlighting the cultural and historical background necessary to understand BoA's success. In my opinion, in addition to everything said in this video, BoA also succeeded as a solo act because she is the full package. She has always wanted to be in a group, her unique vocals and especially her groundbreaking dance skills contribute to her success as well. You mentioned Hyoyeon as one of k-pop's best dancers, but BoA has also long been considered the best dancer in K-pop, especially in the hip-hop dance category. Overall, I agree with your message that the acts themselves are not the most important factor in success, but rather the circumstances. However, it's important to note BoA has the undeniable skills and the charisma that made it possible for her to succeed for as long as she has.
Thank you! Oh yes I thought it was implied by the video but I should have been more clear that yes BoA is known as one of K-pop’s best dancers as well! Plus her stage charisma and everything! TY for highlighting that! :))
Excellent video! BoA is so important for Kpop, breaking into the japanese market was HUGE back then, and it is almost unbelievable that so many people don't know about her. Her talent, hard work, oh the hard work from such a young age!, her perseverance, they all determined her great success and her impact. And to be as big as she was without social media, without youtube, without smartphones being widespread and everyone having internet on the palm of their hands was not even something we imagined...just, incredible. I admire her, and love her talent. As you said, she was indeed too early for many things, there was no international Hallyu Wave yet. I am also was happy for her that she could finally be in a girl group with GOT The Beat. Oh, and Eat You Up is still ICONIC.
Such a great video! I’ve been a diehard BoA fan for many years and I’m impressed with how much research you did to put this together. She has a long history and it’s hard to make it compact, but I thought you did it justice. :) I remember well when she was preparing for her American debut, we were all so excited about it. While it didn’t turn out how I thought it would, I always felt the whole experience had a big impact on her artistry. After her US promotions is when she starts to be more hands-on with her music, producing and composing way more than before, what would eventually lead to producing an entire album in 2015. Now she’s finally producing for other artists. Her trajectory is so amazing and unique, I could spend hours talking about it!
Aww thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed it. She truly is an amazing artist who deserves all the recognition. I agree that her American Debut changed her a little bit (how could it not?) but like you said, there were a lot of positives that came from what I'm sure was an isolating time. I'm happy she's still doing so well. :)
Standing ovation, my friend! This was awesome and so incredibly informative. I learned a lot, and especially loved the economics portion which was fascinating. I'm giving you a solid +1 to continue incorporating these long form videos. Fantastic work! BoA will always have a special place in the industry and in my heart. Such amazing vital work. I didn't realize she was so high up in SM. I wouldn't be surprised if one day she runs it, should she decide to. ;)
🥺🥺 thank you! I’m glad you watched it and enjoyed it so much! It took a lot of work and research but I really wanted it to be good. I’m happy you learned something too! I think it would be really cool if one day BoA decided to run it because I think she would take SM to a whole other level! :)
An important point I think was missed is that she scored her most important international hit with her song for the anime Inuyasha. "Every Heart" was an ending theme to the show and was shown directly to millions of American anime viewers on Adult Swim for months. Anime music is already an enormous introductory point into broader Japanese culture and in BoA's case, it led millions of new people to not only listen to her albums but to look at other Korean artists like TVXQ and give Korean media as a whole a chance. I don't think even Psy would have had such a massive hit with Gangnam Style if BoA hadn't already softened the way by winning over large swathes of the anime community, who were major anchors in the Hallyu Wave going west
I like this video, it shows ❤ BoA's ❤ complete life, shows the most of her talents (a little bit more of them & some other things in my mind could be put in, too) and explains very much. ❤ BoA ❤ is for me a strong fighter, who reached now her dream and she done her active time after 20 years in 2023 with the concert 'Musically' 😢. I don't know how long and until which age normally Asian Artists (must) stop their careers, but ❤ BoA ❤ is one year younger than me and I think it's special like she is generally! ❤ BoA ❤ did for me so much unbelievable great things, stays human until the end (shows her emotions on stage, what I never have seen before from other artists). @@JonathanMillerMusic Are CD's or DVD's from ❤ BoA ❤ to get for me in 🇩🇪❔ She is not known here and I see all only here 😭, what RUclips blocked for us... There are few female Korean artists I would put as power players!! However BoA is certainly one of them. In the realm of people like Yoon Mi-Rae, Lee Hyori & IU she is an institution. In Japan's case Namie Amuro, Hirku Utada & Crystal Kay!! Which Boa is usually paired with when these kind of comparisons come up. You will not be in this camp unless you have earned your stripes period!! _____________________________________________ It's pretty significant given so few female artists in Korea even make it to this stage. Let alone last 20 years and still manage to keep reinventing themselves which BoA has done on a regular basis. BoA is a bona-fide mega recording artist now. Not an idol which some snowflakes seems to not understand!! I am taking directly at you Street Man Fighter & KPop Star!! She is more qualified then most on that panel. So the hate she has been getting by some clueless trolls is quite laughable. BoA being the modest angel she is won't take credit. ______________________________________________ However her career reads like a who who of K-Pop. SM Entertainment was on the verge of bankruptcy before BoA's debut. Which BTW she was 14 at the time lol. A lot of pressure to put on one person so young yet she did it & manged to do it without social media, RUclips or Google yet!! Great piece here & thank you for giving the Queen her proper do respect!! 😹💕
I agree with all the points you made in this video. BoA is the Queen of K-Pop 👑👑 and her influence in Japan has helped kpop acts break into the Japanese market. Also, I love how you said BoA & BTS paved their own way on their own path in different generations. Their global impact is the same. Thank you for this amazing analysis of BoA's impact in kpop. 💕
Thank you! I believe BoA deserves a lot of credit for what she did but that doesn’t mean we have to say what BTS has done is any LESS important. Both acts have contributed a lot to kpop and music in general. Celebrating both can exist at the same time and I think sometimes people forget that. 💚
28:10 I didn't know this about her. Since dreams come true. You know you are REALLY INSPIRING. YOUR WORDS ARD INSPIRING. I knew she played an important role in K-pop and the economy in the nation because that's a form of trade. A lot of nations rely on entertainment for trade and it brings tourism. This video was EXTREMELY entertaining and informative! You've got me hooked and subscribed. I even remembered to press 👍. You are very well spoken. English is your first language.
As someone who is new to Kpop I love learning about the history of this genre, the industry and the stars from the past 30 years. You did an amazing job with this video, it's like something I'd see on Netflix only better because it was made by someone who has a passion for the art. Cheers from Australia ❤🌞
Hey a lot of us anime fans got introduced to Kpop indirectly through artists like BoA & TVXQ. We respect her a lot tho never knowing before that our favs have actually been sung by a Kpop artist haha
what an excellent essay!! i learned so much, i knew boa was always super impactful, but i didnt realise JUST what a trailblazer she really was at her time...amazing!
Landed here to learn about Boa, and I am not disappointed at all. In-fact I'm thankful to you that you fed me with such amazing information. Thank you very much, It is good to know about her.
This is an amazing video! Thanks so much for this!! I love BoA sm &, what she has done for Kpop is absolutely insane! She is the queen & she doesnt need a crown to prove it 💪👑
Great video! I remember reading about her impact and how she helped SM and S.Korea financially back in the day. BoA got me into East Asian music and I've followed her such a long time. It's so sad she is not recognized more outside of Asia and worse when people look down on her. She's amazing and I'll always be a fan of BoA!h
I was an OG fan of K-pop and jpop from way back in 2003, and I was looked at as such a weirdo by my peers for likening it. I wanted so bad for se7en to get famous in the US, I was so excited when he released his song “girls” with lil Kim in 2008 but he too was too early for the K-pop wave. Im 33 now so I’ve aged out of kpop but I just feel like I should deserve some credit for knowing it was cool before it was cool lol
Same i remeber being so mad when BoA us album and Hikaru Utada (ok jpop not kpop) never seemed to get like any advertising plays on tv etc it was just their on the shelf. No promo
Also thanks for the hard work you put into this video, you really went in depth with it to the point of even mentioned how she economically helped S.Korea. I’m glad you’re bringing her back into the spot light where she belongs. Keep up the good work JM!
Omg I didn't realise you did a video on BoA also!! Would you consider perhaps changing the thumbnail? I didn't notice it was her straight away and perhaps if it's more eye catching you'll get more views, as you deserve! Taeyeon and Taylor's thumbnails are super eye catching!
That’s actually great feedback thank you. I’ll talk to my thumbnail designer but do you have any suggestions as to which era might be most recognizable to everyone? I appreciate your input!
@@JonathanMillerMusic Ahh i'm glad! I think her "Better" era has some great pictures! I don't think a link will work if I share it but definitely something recent wouldn't hurt! Best of luck!
@@Koko3op Ok perfect! Thank you so much for your feedback. I'll work with my thumbnail designer and if you see the thumbnail change once or twice just know we're testing stuff! 😉
I'm having a blast watching your history videos. They make me feel part of the whole too. I got into BoA from RUclips video suggestions after Ayumi Hamasaki so I was glad to see one of my other favorite artists mentioned. Japan is the second biggest music industry? I wonder why- I thought it would be Korea. Best of Asia instead of Beat of Angel! I agree lol
OMG thank you! I'm really glad you're enjoying them!! Ayumi Hamasaki is iconic. One of these days I've gotta make time to do a deep dive on a J-Pop artist! haha Japan is the second largest music market for a variety of reasons. #1 it's fairly welcoming to artists around the globe. #2 It's very self-sustaining and has had a longgggggg history of being such. Japan is still the largest consumer of physical music (like CDs and things) because Japan has a love and appreciation of physical objects historically. So it's been able to do just fine on its own generating BILLIONS of dollars domestically. :) I should do a whole video about that one day too! haha
You have a career as storied & influential as BoA which most don't in K-Pop. You might be able to call yourself a legend. BoA Quan is the reason there is even a Korean wave or an SM entertainment. Which at the time was nearly bankrupt until BoA come around. Yea bankrupt and she did before there really was an internet. Google was only 2 years old company. There was no social media really & RUclips didn't exist. She did it at age 14 yet lol. What are most trainee's doing at 14? Other then hoping they survive prison for the next several years. BoA has 20 albums to her name not counting her 55 or so singles. Along with her 216 or so videos as OMG lol. Was the first Korean artist to break the Japanese market. At a time both counties wern't really on speaking terms. Her charts record stood for an amazing 20 years Which wasn't broken until BlackPink. She also has a Hollywood movie to her credit Step Up. What BoA was in a Step Up movie lol. I haven't even gotten started here lol. :)
studied latin for a year when i was sent to a seminary. how everybody pronounce bona fide is actually wrong. fide is not one syllable as all latin words, so it's pronounced as fee-deh

You did an amazing job with this video, it's like something I'd see on Netflix only better because it was made by someone who has a passion for the art. Cheers from Australia ❤🌞
Hey a lot of us anime fans got introduced to Kpop indirectly through artists like BoA & TVXQ. We respect her a lot tho never knowing before that our favs have actually been sung by a Kpop artist haha
what an excellent essay!! i learned so much, i knew boa was always super impactful, but i didnt realise JUST what a trailblazer she really was at her time...amazing!
wow~ so impressive by your detailed introduction!
Thank you! :))
Landed here to learn about Boa, and I am not disappointed at all. In-fact I'm thankful to you that you fed me with such amazing information. Thank you very much, It is good to know about her.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching, and I'm glad you liked it!
This is an amazing video! Thanks so much for this!! I love BoA sm &, what she has done for Kpop is absolutely insane! She is the queen & she doesnt need a crown to prove it 💪👑
Thank you! I'm really happy you enjoyed it!
Thank you! I agree. BoA has done so much and it feels like as time goes on, people forget. Hopefully this video will help with that a little bit! :))
@JonathanMillerMusic I'm happy you did this video to help bring more attention to her.
This is an incredible video, the Queen of Kpop will always be great 💛💛💛💛💛💛
TYSM! I appreciate you watching this one!! ❤️❤️
I LOVE these types of videos! I really enjoy the deep dive on the surrounding issues (the financial crisis, the societal factors, etc)
Thanks for making a video about BoA. Very well-packed information! BoA is a living legend.
Thank u for watching! BoA is definitely a legend!!
As a struggling actor, singer, and cover dancer, this video, as well as your words in the conclusion, gave me some things to think about.
Wow. This is so informative. I hope more people will see this
Thank you! Me too! haha :)
BoA, enough said 💜
She's still my number 1
I was an OG fan of K-pop and jpop from way back in 2003, and I was looked at as such a weirdo by my peers for likening it. I wanted so bad for se7en to get famous in the US, I was so excited when he released his song “girls” with lil Kim in 2008 but he too was too early for the K-pop wave. Im 33 now so I’ve aged out of kpop but I just feel like I should deserve some credit for knowing it was cool before it was cool lol
hahaha you should 100% I'll give you some credit if no one else will! hahaha
I appreciate that! My deep dive videos like this take a lot of work so I really appreciate the kind feedback! 💖
One of these days I've gotta make time to do a deep dive on a J-Pop artist! haha
Japan is the second largest music market for a variety of reasons. :) I should do a whole video about that one day too! haha
@@JonathanMillerMusic yes the only guess I had was about the physical disks. i would definitely watch that video.
@@kalpic11 sweet! I’ll keep it in my back pocket then :)
I absolutely love your work! I only trust your videos to educate myself on the history of Artists.
Thank you, for making this video. Just found your channel today, and I'm binge watching your essay videos 😅
Glad you like them! Please watch away and let me know which ones you like the most! 😁
Thank you for this informative and detailed explanation. Makes me love BOA more.
Thank you for this! ❤️❤️
My pleasure!! TY for watching! BoA is amazing!! 💖💖💖
Thank u for thisssss
Fantastic video, I wish you would also cover others such as Sun-Mi.
Thank you! Sunmi is fantastic! I would love to talk about her and Wonder Girls in a future video!!
Loved this video
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! :)
Love love love this video so much and the in depth detail. I wish everyone who listens to kpop can watch this
You are an absolute fucking man of culture. PREACH.
BoA and Koda Kumi are the only reasons I started listening to foreign music all together. #KidsToday... 😂😁
Boa is queen of kpop
💖💖💖💖💖💖
studied latin for a year when i was sent to a seminary. how everybody pronounce bona fide is actually wrong. fide is not one syllable as all latin words, so it's pronounced as fee-deh
🥂💐
Seeing as the US's biggest pop icons are mainly "People of color" idk if that part had much to do with it...
This video is worth repeating again and again ! ❤❤❤
💯 awesome research. I'm a Jumping BoA and I have watched quite a few videos like this, but yours really Dove Deep. There was information I didn't know, and for that I thank you. 👏 💕 💪🏻🫰🏻
Thank you for watching! This is one of my favorite deep dives that I've done and took a LOT of work hahaha. Do you have any special memories of BoA since you've been a fan for so long? 💛
@@JonathanMillerMusic Of course, she is the reason I got into kpop in the first place. "We" have shared a lot since 2009. 🫂
