Love this so muuuuch.. Finally someone understands and can explain it well about the meaning of 2nd gen of Korea Girls Group, especially KARA. KARA really had huge roles in establishing/developing of music business for Korean groups in Japan. They achieved great awards. Unfortunately, during their hiatus, they were underrated, sometimes being left, being forgotten and not being mentioned in Kpop music developments. KARA has their unique dances, rap style, even performance costumes. Thank you John..
Thanks for the amazing video. FYI guys, KARA took their first win on December 16 2002 for “WHEN I MOVE” at Music Bank. This makes KARA the first girlgroup have a Music Show win in three different decades. As Kamilia, I'm so proud of KARA 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

KARA got me into KPOP. Didn’t learn about them until well after their heyday, but I quickly fell in love with their music. Mamma Mia was the very first MV I saw of KARA. This 15th Anniversary comeback is the first KARA comeback I’ll get to be a part of of, which makes this extra special for me. This will easily be the comeback of the year!!

THANK YOU! 1st and 2nd Gen paved the way for BTS, Black Pink, and other very popular groups to have an international following! Without groups like Big Bang, 2ne1, Kara, Boa, SHINee, Psy, Super Junior, Wonder Girls, SNSD, etc. 3rd and 4th Gen may not have been big international successes. Put some respect on these groups' legacies! ICONS!
IM SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS RN!!! Technically I’m Genz but I grew up with gen2 kpop and it’s hard to articulate to new Stan’s what exactly it was like! These groups felt larger than life and I’m so glad you can put in to words why! I’m sending this to everyone!!!
This is touching to watch. Kara n 2ne1 were my fav gen 2 groups. I can't believe we r seeing a comeback from them tmr. Thanks for d great n informative video. ♡
I have recently discovered Kara and I literally had never heard a bad song from them, EVERYTIME I HEAR PANDORA I RISE UP ITS LITERALLY ON REPEAT EVERYDAY. I don’t know what better song there is than Pandora, LOVE AND STAN KARA!!
Very well said. Love Kara always and thank you for mentioning Boa's U.S promotions as well. She and Wonder Girls really dug the trenches for kpop to migrate into the u.s market but its funny when people question how I have an entirely English BoA album. Because of Kara and early tvxq, many groups tried to dig their toes into the Japan market too. You eventually saw a trend of some gen 2 groups just forgetting their korean audience entirely because they made more money in Japan. 💀
Kpop became global with 2nd Generation. And it created the best music and it was the best creative time for all these groups. Nothing being done in Kpop now is impressive or as good as 2nd generation. KARA’s sales are impressive because they weren’t a group that relied on photocards and extra inclusions to sell albums like many groups now. Back then many Kpop groups didn’t do the whole photocard thing like SM artists did at the time. Also another fun fact when they were active KARA were the 2nd best selling girl group in Korea after SNSD for physical album sales. And yes thank you for mentioning about KARA’s success in Japan. We all know BoA and TVXQ were the Kpop Kings and Queen in Japan but after them it’s KARA who continued that. SNSD were successful also but KARA had a lot of achievements that hadn’t been done before by a Korean girl group. Many Kpop groups started to debut and try to go into the market in Japan because of KARA.
This video was PERFECT! The way you met all the comments about Gen Z vs Gen X, about BTS "Paving the way", directly, in such a compassionate and educational way, it should be required viewing for all new kpop fans. Thank you, Jonathan!!
Thank you so much! That's really sweet of you to say! On this channel, I like to challenge the idea that if you talk about one artist in a video, people assume you're attempting to take the achievements away from another in my own special little way. It's not something I subscribe to so if I can make that point without screaming or being angry about it, I will. :D hehe
We truly are so fortunate to have grown up with 2nd gen artists. To see them still be celebrated and loved many years later feels like a privilege that not many enjoy. Tbh, none of the older idols need to make a comeback for their anniversary; they can celebrate by themselves and all that. They're just insanely generous enough to share those celebrations with their fans.
I’m a gen 2 kid. I watched so many of these groups debut and honestly it is so heartwarming to see these groups come back. It really makes me hope for more reunions in the future like, TVXQ, 4minute and so many more. I got so emotional with SNSDs comeback and when I saw Kara came back it made me so happy. I really wish them all the best with their comebacks and hope to see them do more in the future. Thanks for the video!❤
Great video with tons of history besides K-pop stuff. I will point out the credit of glow/lights ticks at concerts is wrong, though. Use in concerts was actually pioneered by the Grateful Dead in the early seventies and Japan was doing coordinated light stick stuff in the 80s and 90s. I do love the focus on KARA, as they usually don’t get as much hype as Boa and SNSD.
This is such a well made video. I've been with kpop for more than half of my life and putting it into this perspective just made me realize how much it has evolved over the decade. It's kinda a bittersweet feeling to see active groups during my childhood reunite nowadays. It just dawned to me how much time has passed and how much has changed but in the end I feel more grateful than ever.
I know exactly how you feel. Kpop changed my life in so many ways when I was younger and if I can pay that forward by making content like this, then it's my pleasure. TY for watching and the nice words! 💚
thanks so much for this video!! kara is my first ult gg ever and it has always upset me how international kpop fans usually undermine their achievements nor mention them when talking about 2nd gen legends. this cb means so much to me, im so thankful to them for making it happen :')
Thank you for mentioning Jet Coaster Love, it's one of my favourite Kara songs. Despite everyone emphasising their Japanese popularity, I feel like their actual Japanese discography is overlooked by global K-pop fans sometimes, so to hear you mention specific names of singles and albums makes me happy.
Excellent video! Every word speaks truth. For me 1st gen is the reason kpop exists and 2nd gen is the reason kpop is known worldwide, so I really get mad when younger fans disrespect old generation kpop. Yes, 3rd and 4th gen are more popular, but 2nd gen were the first been known worldwide. This video explains perfectly that. Hope younger fans can watch this.
Thank you! I actually had someone who is a younger kpop fan (got into it around 2019) tell me that this video was not only informative but helped them appreciate even more how far kpop has come and it made me smile. 💚
I was a kpop fan from 2007-2013, and this Kara comeback has been the first song I have been thoroughly enjoying since then. So funny how back in the day, Kara wasn’t even viewed as particularly good performers, and now they are praised for their vocals and performance. 2nd generation will always be the best❤
Amazingly informative video. Thank you so much for highlighting all these historical landmarks that gen 2 and KARA specifically achieved. I was actually living in Japan when KARA did their first Tokyo Dome show and I feel so privileged for having had that chance. Truly unforgettable!
Thank you for watching! Omg I'm so jealous! I bet it was amazing. I love watching all the clips from the show but being there firsthand must've been an awesome experience!
Step and Damaged Lady were MAASSSIVE songs for me when i was younger they were the songs i showed my friends and got half of them into Kpop Such an honour being a Gen 2 stan xD
This was honestly a fantastic video. Not only did you give credits to KARA but you also gave credits to the Kpop groups/artists who came before them. I am here for giving Kara their flowers. They went through a lot, from their debut days to the members changes to DSP being a rat to them. Still, they did amazing. I started listening to Kpop in 2009, during 2nd gen, so Kara was one of the groups that I was fond of. Seeing their performances always brought a smile to my face. And their Japanese discography is so good: Jetcoaster love, Go go Summer, Jumpin, Speed Up, Electric boy, etc. I remember how huge their name was in Japan. They were invited to so many famous Japanese shows. And they really took the time to learn Japanese. Jiyoung even stayed in Japan after the end of her contract with DSP (she had a role in the Japanese movie Assassination Classroom). What bothers me the most in the current Kpop scene and fandoms is the disrespect towards groups from past generations and towards older fans. As you said, without the older groups to open the door, the newest groups would have not been able to reach the level they are reaching today. Being a Kpop fan during 2nd gen was fun but also a struggle. Most people did not know about Kpop. Most Korean shows had no subtitles or could not even be found on the Internet. And when you did find these shows with translation, the shows were separated into several videos. Then some of the videos were missing (for example, you had part 1, part 2 and then part 3 was missing 😭🤣). I am still thankful to all the kind translators who did the work on their own free time and for free. Fans really were able to follow and understand their faves thanks to these fan-translators. I hope that a lot more groups from older generations will have a comeback because as an older fan, I don't really connect with the newest and younger groups' music. But I instantly connected with Kara's When I move (And the rest of their Special Album too. Every track is good).
the last section of the video was so well said, i enjoyed every second of it. i feel so proud of how far they and the entire of kpop have come. keep up the good work, this video was great.
@@JonathanMillerMusic I have been a SONE since 2009 but nothing beats nostalgia feels with our favourites from 2nd Generation coming back despite everything. I literally cried for days when SNSD came back with their new album this year. And now with KARA, its like going down on a memory lane that brings us back to our life cycle. Btw Subscribed to your channel. Keep up with the great work!
@@shopaholicpals Thank you so much and same!! I actually did a whole special thing for SNSD, when Forever 1 came out like this vid, if you get a chance to check it out! All these comebacks feel like a piece of my soul has been restored. hahaha 😭
Thank you for the video tho, its really information-packed. Also this is the first time I see a kpop video mentioning japanese music industry. Thanks for that, not many people know about how much japanese music has influenced kpop. Even tho I think their industry is very complicated and dynamic, so its kinda hard to follow, but they do has some of the craziest musician I know.
And the 2nd generation keeps breaking records and things such as making members leave company's but still be in a group and be active 15th year's later as opposed to the typical 7 years
Thank you for this! I got into kpop in 2008 thanks to my sisters' interest in J-pop (BoA and TVXQ were their gateways). Kara to this day is probably one of my favorite girl groups, and their songs have aged incredibly well. It's great to see so many 2nd gen groups, I feel like too many newer kpop fans don't understand how much they impacted kpop or the context of their success vs. today. There's so much emphasis on streams and views and I feel like newer fans don't get that the parameters were different back then. I remember when Nobody by the Wonder Girls went viral on youtube, seeing them in concert in 2020, and how big that was.
History is important to remember because it helps us appreciate more where things are now. 💚 Merci beaucoup!
This line: "...Your holding on, because some people come back." It made me break into tears and now I´m almost crying, tears are falling. KARA´s comeback had huge impact on me. It made me super happy and super sad at the same time. Goo Hara is my bias and we can never have her back. But KARA made us see Hara is with us even, if we can´t see her on stage or in mv. That is the reason why that line hurt so much. But there is also 2nd reason. VIXX, they are on hiatus, because of army. With KARA´s comeback I can see, it´s possible that one day VIXX will make their comeback.
This video was very well executed and well-said! The research efforts you’ve put into this and all the nuances you brought up were brillant. From a second gen fan! :)
Also the late Kim Sung Jae., One of the First pioneers of Kpop., Although he died during his debut, he paved the way for solo artists like BoA, Rain, IU.
I forgot this tibit and wanted to include this. Gen 1 H.O.T. Had an anniversary reunion and it was big for those people who grew up with them. Heck I didn’t grow up with HOT and I was touched when I saw the reunion showcase. It really shows how much these groups can matter to people. Seeing gen 2 follow that and do reunions is so heartwarming.
Thank you sm! I’m happy you are here and enjoyed my vid! I’ve got a full playlist of deep dives like this I hope you’ll take some time to check out. 😊😊
There really aren't a lot of Kpop acts I find all that good tbh, but KARA is probably one of, if not my top favourite among all the Kpop acts, even to this day. I listen primarily to their Japanese songs, and I'm more of a Jpop fan than a Kpop fan, and their songs feel more similar to the Jpop sound and that gives me a sense of familiarity. Also, I can't wait for the Japanese version to come out soon 🐇 Also Twice, because they too, are similar to KARA, and that their music is also pretty similar to the Jpop sound
2nd gen overall had the best music quality, sweetune, black eyed pielsung, brave brothers, shinsadong tiger are literally the best producers in kpop, 2009 to 2013 are the best years in term of song quality in kpop
@@JonathanMillerMusic I believe there are too few channels out there discussing the history of K-pop and other music genres, so I appreciate all the hard work you put into creating this video and others. 😊
What makes kpop fun for me bcs its has both art and fun in their commercialism, but 2nd gen has it balanced the most for me. Also you need to talk about f(x), they're pretty much the mother of todays kpop gen, their album too has changed kpop to what it is today
Well first time I found KPop was from game online called Audition, When I was middle schoolers I loved to go to internet cafe in Jakarta after school and played for 1-2 hours Audition game to level up and also streaming Kpop music while playing, because of that I know a lot Kpop artist such as K.Will, Mc Mong, Cool, SNSD, KARA and more. First fandom I joined was SNSD, but eventually I got bored because they're sounds not quite my type, in 2009 I became KARA fans because their sounds are different with others (Retro-Groovy-Dancefloor sounds) I dug a lot of KARA and spreading to my friends rl and online, and "Mr" are released to securing me and my friends who had same interest in KARA it's really hit even the people who I know they're not into Kpop before are showing interest in Kpop as well and also the internet cafe are playing that songs a lot, So when I first time opening the internet cafe door I hear a lot LaLaLaLaLaLa~ in most computers.
Actually it was Korean Enka singers (Trot singers in Korea) that setup the foundation of Korean artists to sell their music in Japan, Kpop came much later as Korean enka singers were very successful in Japan.
Shinee was active right up till 2018 then had there first comeback in 2020 as a full group thats only a 2 year gap. So I don't think this resurgence was started by them it was mainly from groups that hadent been active in 4 or 5 years, I'm a big shinee fan but even I know shinee was active right up till the very end, and also taemin carried out a lot of activities so it made it feel like shinee was still very active.
@@kerronwalker1589 I disagree. Taemin held the SHINee fort but he's more identifiable as Taemin the soloist and SuperM member. SHINee as a group was dormant aside from their appearances in 2020. Their formal comeback was in 2021. Not counting the 2nd gen groups that has always been active, the resurgence became more prominent after SHINee's successfull comeback. Other groups from 2nd gen suddenly started having guestings and promotions too because of the heightened interest for 2nd gen groups
Just a small correction. You said that gen 3 is from 2013, but gen 3 starts with 2012. Love your video! Love your amount of attention for detail and your narration is fantastic (baby) as well!
hahaha Thank you! Yeah I think the 2012/2013 line is blurred, like some people say EXO is gen 2 others say EXO is gen 3, which is why I tried to say "about" when mentioning date lines.
T-ara still gets no respect, and yet their impact is unmeasurable, from their success to their scandal, and fall, and having to rely on foreign markets. Also, leaving out Dreamcatcher, ah man, oh well.
This! The video has a huge hole in it because it is argued that with the 3rd generation, the focus shifted from the physical market to the digital, which isn't really true. The second half of the 2nd generation were already all about Digital Monsters. T-Ara were crazy with the download numbers and broke records left and right. For example, Roly-Poly broke records with 4M domestic downloads in 2011 alone. So his statement for 3rd generation makes no sense. 3rd Generation actually started with EXO reviving the physical market again with over 1M physical sold copies of XOXO with their hit Growl in 2013. And then big names started to compete for both physical and digital dominance while social media did the rest of getting Kpop out there. Let's not act like Gangnam Style wasn't the only korean song any of the public in the west knew about. The growth of groups only started slowly after that. The statements that BTS, Black Pink etc came along is also not really true. We are talking about the beginning of 2013/14. BTS only got traction with I Need You which was in 2015 and Black Pink literally debuted in 2016. Red Velvet at the time was okay-ish received, but wasn't huge by any means. They only really found true domestic success through Dumb Dumb in 2015. The research done is so wonky in this video.
people really don’t know how much impact a past group has because the world has changed so much. current groups are being compared to the standards os today’s world, it wouldn’t make sense to compare past groups to standards of today. we need to stop doing that to groups as time progresses.
2003-2005 is not really 2nd gen k-pop. It's the dark age of k-pop. The era where no one really succeeded, survived and came out of intact (except Jewelry for some reason) and of the top of my head I can't think of a single group that debuted in those three years that actually has had any kind of meaningful legacy long term.
I would argue that second gen start in 05-15 bc if you were having into kpop during that time you would remember ppl still refer to that generation as 2nd gen and when nct was introduced articles started saying the new 3rd generation. Idk why ppl keep forgetting this. I was deep into kpop during the years of 12-15 and we were definitely referring to all those groups as 2nd gen. And during this time their songs were on US radio and commercials (yet no one remembers this but then again these were tumblr days) Imo ppl started saying 2013 was the start of 3rd gen bc they didn’t want BTS to be apart of 2nd gen for some reason. Bc I was there when no one care abt them and army was a small fandom and I was apart of it. And we would consider them 2nd gen. So I’m in confusion when it changed??
It’s not irrelevant. History and explanation was purposefully given to provide context and understanding to why Kara’s comeback is significant. Generation 2 as a whole is highlighted the most because Kara is a generation 2 act. The other generations are explained and used to provide context and amplify the overarching message of why Kara and Generation 2 acts in Kpop deserve their flowers for their contributions to music during a time when the general public tend to erase or forget about what they did. Everything in this video is intentional, purposeful, and definitely relevant to Kara’s and Gen2 K-pop’s significance. The title of the video clearly states that Kara and Generation 2 Kpop will be the central themes of this video too. :)

Because of Kara and early tvxq, many groups tried to dig their toes into the Japan market too. You eventually saw a trend of some gen 2 groups just forgetting their korean audience entirely because they made more money in Japan. 💀
Kara at their peak dominated the japanese market and had successful back to back tour.
No problem! It means a lot to me too
Thank you for mentioning Jet Coaster Love, it's one of my favourite Kara songs.
2nd generation will always be the best❤
haha I know right? Time changes minds, I guess.
They did it for me it's true best kpop generation
Step and Damaged Lady were MAASSSIVE songs for me when i was younger
they were the songs i showed my friends and got half of them into Kpop
Such an honour being a Gen 2 stan xD
100% agree with what you said.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! :) Being a kpop fan back then was a lot of work but we appreciated the effort! 😭
This video is amazing and definitely well researched!! Thanks for acknowledging the things that 2nd gen groups have done for the new ones!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Well said! 2nd gen still have records to break and paths to shovel
I love Kara
Me too :] What are your fave songs?
the last section of the video was so well said, i enjoyed every second of it. i feel so proud of how far they and the entire of kpop have come. keep up the good work, this video was great.
Such an amazing video. I am so proud of being a millennial and a proud lover Gen 2 Kpop. KARA was so huge during the time that gen Z has no idea.
Thank you! KARA was next level. It's so nice to see them back again. Feels like home.
Awesome content, good work 👍.
_____
I only know (R.I.P)Hara's personality because of IY, but it's good to hear about KARA's comeback.
And the 2nd generation keeps breaking records and things such as making members leave company's but still be in a group and be active 15th year's later as opposed to the typical 7 years
Their comeback was so good! I’m a big fan of them ✨💕
Thank you for this!
Well said! And louder for the ppl in the back
this video is just so beautifully made
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it!
Really i appreciate what you said
Well done
Let's enjoy the music lyrics and the rythme 😘☺️😘
Vous avez raison! Je suis tout à fait d’accord. Le deuxième génération est très spéciale mais les gens n’en parlent pas souvent. C’est un peu triste mais c’est pourquoi j’aime fair ces vidéos. History is important to remember because it helps us appreciate more where things are now. 💚 Merci beaucoup!
Hate me idc, second gen will always be THE BEST generation of kpop.
Thank you! I really worked hard on this video so I’m glad you enjoyed it! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Also the late Kim Sung Jae., One of the First pioneers of Kpop., Although he died during his debut, he paved the way for solo artists like BoA, Rain, IU.
Kara is where i started my kpop journey, from pretty girl, still missing goo hara though
This is an amazing informative video about kpop 👏 keep up the good work 👏
Love this❤️
Such a well-researched and crafted video! Just subscribed, wishing you further success!
Also, I can't wait for the Japanese version to come out soon 🐇
Also Twice, because they too, are similar to KARA, and that their music is also pretty similar to the Jpop sound
I get that, KARA's Japanese discography is ELITE. I'm excited for the Japanese version of Move Again too!!
thankyouuuu so muchh
My pleasure! :)
What a great video 👏
2nd gen overall had the best music quality, sweetune, black eyed pielsung, brave brothers, shinsadong tiger are literally the best producers in kpop, 2009 to 2013 are the best years in term of song quality in kpop
Love this 🥰
Thank you! 😊
After all of these success I still see people saying they're out of money with this comeback which is funny bcs they're rich lol
Hahaha “out of money” 😭 Imagine thinking like that 😭🤣
Step is an amazing song and mv. Huge respect from Greece
Agreed! Love to Greece! 🇬🇷💚
gen 2 is also the one that got me into kpop... kara is one of them.. along with others like t-ara and orange caramel..
Fantastic content! Subbing.
Thank you! I’m happy you enjoyed it and are here! 💚🙏🏻
@@JonathanMillerMusic I believe there are too few channels out there discussing the history of K-pop and other music genres, so I appreciate all the hard work you put into creating this video and others. 😊
@@floverdan5180 🥹 Thank you. History helps us understand and appreciate the present. If I can do my part to help with that, I will. 😊
What makes kpop fun for me bcs its has both art and fun in their commercialism, but 2nd gen has it balanced the most for me. Also you need to talk about f(x), they're pretty much the mother of todays kpop gen, their album too has changed kpop to what it is today
F(x) is one of my biggest inspirations. When I get the time, I will do something extra special for them
@@JonathanMillerMusic thank you so so much for that, will be waiting for it
Well first time I found KPop was from game online called Audition, When I was middle schoolers I loved to go to internet cafe in Jakarta after school and played for 1-2 hours Audition game to level up and also streaming Kpop music while playing, because of that I know a lot Kpop artist such as K.Will, Mc Mong, Cool, SNSD, KARA and more.
You’re an awesome 😎 RUclips channel. Happy thanksgiving 🦃🍽 Jonathan.
Actually it was Korean Enka singers (Trot singers in Korea) that setup the foundation of Korean artists to sell their music in Japan, Kpop came much later as Korean enka singers were very successful in Japan.
SHINee started the 2nd gen resurgence in 2021. If you've noticed, after their comeback, more inactive 2nd gen groups came back also
Shinee was active right up till 2018 then had there first comeback in 2020 as a full group thats only a 2 year gap.
@@chroniclesofalivingdeadgirl SNSD and KARA would’ve reunited whether or not that’s true to celebrate their 15th anniversaries anyway.
Agreed
Just a small correction. You said that gen 3 is from 2013, but gen 3 starts with 2012.
Love your video! Love your amount of attention for detail and your narration is fantastic (baby) as well!
hahaha Thank you! Yeah I think the 2012/2013 line is blurred, like some people say EXO is gen 2 others say EXO is gen 3, which is why I tried to say "about" when mentioning date lines.
I’d love to see a video like this about f(x), their contributions to the industry are never given credit, even by SM
❤❤❤❤❤
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PPL AT THE BACK!!
if it aint kara there would be no japanese marketbow down to the queens
0:45 bro forgot the og Friendster 😆
ugh this video makes me feel so old. haha
I KNOW RIGHT 😭😭😭😭😭😭
DON'T FORGET TO STREAM WHEN I MOVE - KARA!
2nd gen kpop is SUPERIOR
T-ara still gets no respect, and yet their impact is unmeasurable, from their success to their scandal, and fall, and having to rely on foreign markets. Also, leaving out Dreamcatcher, ah man, oh well.
I agree with T-ara. T-ara was the group that got me into K-pop. Now about Dreamcatcher, I love them but they aren’t part of those groups.
A Fancam of Go Hara is actually 3 Months older than Yuris
people really don’t know how much impact a past group has because the world has changed so much. current groups are being compared to the standards os today’s world, it wouldn’t make sense to compare past groups to standards of today. we need to stop doing that to groups as time progresses.
And during this time their songs were on US radio and commercials (yet no one remembers this but then again these were tumblr days)
Imo ppl started saying 2013 was the start of 3rd gen bc they didn’t want BTS to be apart of 2nd gen for some reason. Bc I was there when no one care abt them and army was a small fandom and I was apart of it. And we would consider them 2nd gen. So I’m in confusion when it changed??
Ummm no way is 2015 part of 2nd generation lol. The 3rd generation started basically in 2013 with EXO’s success.
a long video that has other irrelevant topic. not hate, but I clicked on the vid for Kara and not some random topic.
I thought BTS paved the way for Kpop or am I wrong?
They did not pave the way at all. Their seniors did :)
You are wrong.
