What I love about this video is that he's clearly not aiming for pure perfection, but for unbridled passion and expression. The music is flowing through him, into his horn, and out the bell without pause.
Stefan Dohr is, in my opinion, the greatest horn player of our time. It's not only because of his technical abilities, but also because of the emotion and energy he puts into every piece he plays.
I have to disagree. The way he "abuses" his instrument with his loud and agressive playing style just does not sound good. Take a look at someone like Radek Baborak. His playing is much more beautiful and efortless
playermartin286 Stefan Dohr is known as the "king of the horn", perhaps in this environment, his true tonal qualities aren't highlighted, it seems like a very acoustically "dead" room. You've touched upon the extremely complicated and often debated topic of sound concept. Stefan's sound is honed to the more West European sound. Whereas Radek was brought up through the Eastern European environment. The Eastern European Sound concept is extremely similar to the American sound concept - with it's warm, darker, "creamy" tone. Whereas the Western European sound concept is very reminiscent of the hunting horn/baroque horn days. So it's very difficult to compare apples and oranges :). They're both fantastic players and one can only hope to get to their level one day.
+Benjamin Law well said, I completely agree, both are definitely of the top players in our time, but you can't definitively say who is better because different areas play differently
+playermartin286 Don't forget it was played during a brass masterclass... And brass player's love when it's played loud !!! There are other versions where Stefan Dohr playing more smoothly during philarmonic concerts ;)
He is amazing. Horn players such as him, Radek Baborak, Sarah Willis, and other great ones, all possess different strengths and flaws which compliment them. Stefan with his amazing upper range and incredible volume, Radek with is flawless tone and technical abilities, and Sarah with her incredible low range, all create a wide selection of the greatest players.
I'm sure this is exactly what strauss had in mind when he wrote the piece for his horn playing father. tis a shame his father never got to play it in concert! However it is not a shame that this is one of the greatest horn concertos out there now!
Fantastic performance - even given the piano as accompaniment instead of orchestra. Real attention to detail and passion, but above all the most beautiful horn tone colours. Wonderful.
OMG this is my school's orchestra hall!!! how come I didn't went to his concert!!! shiitt now I wanna slap myself so bad.....(T_T)/~~ 2012 was my 2nd year of bachelor..too young too naive....
JonatasMonte Idk, I only vaguely even remember making this comment. I probably can now I guess I'll say. I meant no insult to Stefan Dohr, I was merely commenting on how it's almost nice to hear someone of such high musical status make a mistake, to know that you don't have to be perfect to still be amazing.
One day I watched this and then studied Bohr models in chemistry. Then I went to bed. I legit had a dream that I found Stefan Dohr in my neighborhood, and chased him around screaming “STeFaN BoHR” and interrogating him about horn and chemistry.
I played this for my college audition, also for Solo and Ensemble (the first mvmt at least). It's fun, but it requires a lot of endurance. I love the second mvmt the best!
Is this a good piece for a well advanced highschool player to play? I really like this and my judge told me to play a strauss or Mozart. And this is kick ass. Would I probably be biting off more than I could chew?
I'm a high school horn player. It's a hard piece. For me the range/ quick articulation sections are difficult. Just playing for fun? Go for it. Might be too much to perform though. Requires great endurance.
The Boris Becker of horn players - all smash with little finesse in this piece. Superb in orchestral playing! IMO best ever performance - Myron Bloom - lyrical and gorgeous sound! Worst ever performance - Barry Tuckwell!!
Man, you lose much of his life watching videos of people you dislike. I never saw Stefan Dohr laughing at someone, however much he dislikes. You play very well but you lack humility. Do not like, do not watch MANÉ!!!

Sara Willis in the background next to the pianist.
Fiona Stout Did you mean the page-turner? 😉
His articulation is absolutely AMAZING! This is a difficult piece and he plays it so effortlessly.
Absolute maximum of any instrument. PHENOMENAL!!!
This is the loudest Strauss 1 in existence.
I guess you never heard of something called volume knob/button on the recorders.
***** really I didn't.
And the fastest probably haha
Lol I played the opening at my solo contest way louder than this guy actually too loud it scared my pianist
If it is in a concert hall with 1000 people, the volume might just be right.
This is just insane, what a God of horn playing
OMG That's Sarah Willis turing pages!!!! You lucky dog Stefan!!!! BTW you are the KING!
Oh my god, as usual stephan dohr makes me wanna go practice on my horn all day long just to try and match up to 1/1000 of his skill level
omg that was amazing! Bravo!
Playing this at school next week for a competition? Hoping for the best and looking for inspiration just like this!
Best alive, best there’s ever been. You absolutely cannot beat an Alex 103 horn.
Performing the first movement for a jury this fall. I'll be calling upon my inner Stefan.
Cassandra Reinhart kinda same here! I performing the first movement for my state solo🙂
Fantastic performance - even given the piano as accompaniment instead of orchestra. Real attention to detail and passion, but above all the most beautiful horn tone colours. Wonderful.
Imo this is the epitome of horn playing. Perfect horn piece with the perfect horn player.
Amazing contrast between loud/soft passages.
Thank you for sharing with us!!

This is so perfect....
Now THAT is how this should be played.
Oh my gosh, he missed the Eb at 3:29. That makes me feel so much better about myself you have no idea.
Can you play it like him even playing the Eb?
JonatasMonte Idk, I only vaguely even remember making this comment. I probably can now I guess I'll say. +hgamgirl I heard one of the trumpets in Canadian Brass crack once. Everyone cracks lol

Is this a good piece for a well advanced highschool player to play? I really like this and my judge told me to play a strauss or Mozart. And this is kick ass. Would I probably be biting off more than I could chew?

It’d be great if he played R. Gliere horn concerto...
not very bad, Mr. Dohr!
JD Büsche That is exactly what I was thinking!
Bravo!

I'm a high school horn player. It's a hard piece. For me the range/ quick articulation sections are difficult. Just playing for fun? Go for it. Might be too much to perform though. Requires great endurance.
Link? I'm probably going to do Franz Strauss' Nocturno though. That's what my director said I should do
I'd be playing it for Solo and Ensemble.
every taste are in the nature....
i think the piano should be closed just to hear how clear the horn is, just my opinion tho
that depends I'm a High school horn player the only one in my school's
but I am playing this as well and yes it can be a tricky wicket in spots...
braviiiiisiiiisiiiimo.............
He is just so passionate ... who cares if he flubbed a note and it is a little fast.
may I ask what is it that you find so bad about this kaburi91? I'm a horn player and would just like to know why you dislike it?
I'm playing this in front of my entire school
I'm playing this for my college auditions in a couple months! 😐 I hope to be a third as good as him.
+Joy why not just as good? if you're american they are not gonna like this european sound
+Joy i would go for just as good as this. why not aim high? remember much air (haha)
+Joy i would go for just as good as this. why not aim high? remember much air (haha)

However,you could also try Borodin's 2nd.
Isn't that Sarah Willis, turning pages?
The Boris Becker of horn players - all smash with little finesse in this piece. Superb in orchestral playing! IMO best ever performance - Myron Bloom - lyrical and gorgeous sound! Worst ever performance - Barry Tuckwell!!

シュテファンは間違いなく歴史に残る
さすがだ笑
En el pais de los ciegos el tuerto es rey.
I wish you luck
This is great playing but (for me) the tempo is a bit fast; especially the first mvt.
Is this a concert? Oh wait, I hear coughing in the background. Must be! Lol
T HE BEST HORNPLAYER WITH SARAH MARY LOUISE AND COOPER BRAVISSIMO STEPHAN
Handsome man playing beautifully ... Marry me ?!?!? Perfect male specimen!!!!!!!!!!
I think it is Alex 103, kidding!
第三楽章 10:14~
Dohr is an excellent player, but Baborák is by far the best!
Barry Tuckwell like.
Sarah Willis as page turner... weird...
It's orchestrated play(
sugosugi---------
Playing for what?
And high schoolers can play this; I pulled the first movement for my college audtions, which have gone quite successfully.
Is it me or is the pianist playing TOO fucking loud at times when Dohr is playing??!!!!! I am JUST fucking saying.....
This tempo is waaaay too fast, at least according to the how I believe Strauss himself intended it to be played.
Me desculpem mas não tá legal não!
