  • BMW pre production test cars Recycling. The BMW Group's Recycling and Dismantling Centre (RDC). BMW Disposing of Cars - Crushing.
    Design for Recycling, as practised by the BMW Group, brings the question of recycling forward to the very earliest stages of vehicle development. There are a number of key considerations involved in the implementation of a recycling-oriented design process. Mixed or un-reprocessable plastic materials are avoided and the variety of plastics is reduced. At the same time, greater use is made of recyclable composite materials and optimised joining techniques. And finally, parts are coded to allow identification of the materials they contain. Through the application of these measures, all BMW Group vehicles produced today can be almost totally recycled at acceptable costs. They already meet the recycling targets for 2006 laid down in the European Directive on end-of-life vehicles. Furthermore, the BMW Group possesses the technical means of complying with the new requirements for obtaining EU type approval, scheduled to enter force in 2005. Life Cycle Assessment is a tool that extends the concept of Design for Recycling still further. It involves assessing the environmental impact of new vehicles and components over the entire product life cycle - from production of raw materials and vehicle manufacturing processes through to the vehicle’s actual use and its final disposal. Intelligent lightweight construction methods are one of the ways in which manufacturers can reduce vehicle fuel consumption and emissions. But the materials used are not always ideal in terms of their suitability for recycling. Life Cycle Assessment permits the manufacturer to make an all-round assessment of the positive and negative aspects of materials and construction methods employed, and to identify any points of conflict. The resulting data on the overall ecological quality of the design then flows directly into the design process for new vehicles.
    Research laboratory and recycling plant: The Recycling and Dismantling Centre Design for Recycling and Life Cycle Assessment both depend on a sound practical and theoretical knowledge base. Much of the BMW Group’s substantial expertise in this field comes from the company’s Recycling and Dismantling Centre (RDZ) at Lohhof on the outskirts of Munich, which has been in operation since 1994. The Centre provides a vehicle-recycling research platform that is without parallel anywhere else in the world. The advances in technological know-how obtained there are shared with the BMW Group’s recycling partners. This know-how also flows directly back to the company’s own development departments, where it is used to optimise the recyclability of new product designs.
    Full network of collection points The BMW Group has set up a “take-back system” in Germany consisting of around 200 approved recycling facilities and collection points. In order to extend this system to cover all of Europe, the BMW Group has entered into an alliance with FIAT, RENAULT and ROVER. Dating back to 1994, the “Together for Recycling” initiative allows its members to share their respective recycling networks. In this respect, too, the BMW Group fully complies with the statutory requirements. In order to meet its obligation to take back and recycle end-of-life vehicles, the BMW Group has set aside funds to cover the anticipated risks associated with the total volume of vehicles sold by the BMW Group to date.
    World leader in sustainable management The commitment to sustainability demonstrated by the BMW Group in the recycling of end-of-life vehicles is a key element in the company’s business strategy. This has been repeatedly recognised by the finance and investment community. For the fourth time in succession, the BMW Group once again features prominently in the world’s major sustainable-investment indexes - Dow Jones, STOXX Limited and SAM Group. The BMW Group was rated second worldwide in the car industry. As further confirmation of the company’s ethical standards, the BMW Group is one of only two European automotive firms to have fulfilled the stringent qualifying criteria for companies listed on the FTSE4 Good Europe investment index, introduced last year.

      Most parts look almost new. Even if these cars are too expensive to repair, they are full of perfectly good parts that could help other vehicles be worth repairing. That would be the most efficient way to recycle.

      But they're all pre-production test cars. They would have been driven thousands of miles, in the harshest envioronments. They may have had holes drilled in them for test measurements. They could have been damaged and repaired, been on 4-poster endurance test beds... the lot.
      I worked for a UK manufacturer that di the same. These cars are the test pieces for the production cars and probably do not have Type Approval for sale to the public. It bothered me at first but when I learnt about what they'd go through and why they were tested, then I just saw them as part and parcel of getting a car into production.

    Some of these comments are ridiculous/absurd. I work for
    Ford and we manufacture many vehicles during the development stage of
    each program and yes, these vehicles must be destroyed. Not just
    because of federal NHTSA mandates, but because they're not safe to drive.
    These "mules" go through many drive tests and many different engine calibrations.
    On an early development vehicle, sometimes the transmissions won't
    even shift properly (not exactly something I would pine for to drive as a
    commuter). The people on here complaining that it "drives up the cost
    of normal vehicles" are absolutely correct. Every product people buy
    from toothbrushes to cars go through a development cycle, where many
    prototypes are created and destroyed and of course those costs are
    recouped in final product sales. This is normal for ANY product that is manufactured in the world.

    My guess would have to be that these cars are various test and pre production cars. All manufacturers have to build extra cars for regulation purposes obviously. Also test cars have to be built, before full continuous production, to ensure build quality and production timing. Any car build as a tester or QC is not or uniquely VINed as such and would be impossible to register and would have to be destroyed as shown.
    Granted there are a quite a few cars shown to be condemned but it might be Only facility responsible for all BWM's to be gutted and crushed. At 1:10 the label the guys scans says E92 US 328iA that is (was) likely a US spec E92 328i with the automatic but everything at the facility is clearly in german.

      +shade375 But then what about at 9:34, that washer fluid reservoir cap had a big dent in it and looked a bit worn like the car had been in operation in the public for a while and the cap (something your everyday driver would tamper with) had been mishandled at some point in its life. Surely the factory workers would never have done that even if it was a test car.

      +D McNamara Trust me, East Block citizens rarely buy brand new BMW, especially private sector. Companies, hovever, are different story. Where i live, just for an 20yrs old e39 to get a replacement hood, i had to make around 20-30 phone calls, to no avail. People here just buy them crashed, with dead engine, or import from england rhd versions, disassemble them, and sell the good parts. And they just go like hot cakes.
      Examle - went to a scrapyard to get parts for my dads chevy, asked just in case guys who run the place for e39 parts, they just laughed at me. Said, only totaled bmw's get to the scrapyards, rest are fixed or restored.

    • @Kaavs
      @Kaavs 8 лет назад

      +D McNamara well, perhaps. American cars are not really popular around here, mostly because they share the same problem with japanese cars. They rust. Badly. Coincidentally, german cars are considered to be the most reliable. And owning a brand new car can be even more expensive, than maintaining a older one.

    • @Kaavs
      @Kaavs 8 лет назад

      +D McNamara well, that's the trick - they don't. I've seen an 98 audi a3 handled very poorly by a woman for couple of years - nothing. It had literally specks of bare metal on the lower Door panels, and after two seasons of salt roads it had only thin film of dirt and rust. Meanwhile her neighbour bought a 2008 Honda accord, which had to have floor replaced after two seasons. Poor guy did everything he could to stop the rust, to no avail.

    • @Kaavs
      @Kaavs 8 лет назад

      +D McNamara True enough. But This is an apartament building country. Only in rare cases people have the chance to really get under car to at least see what's going on there. cars mostly just sit in a packed parking lots troughout the year. But, then again, those, Who want to look after their car will find a way. Rest of them will just sell the car to someone else, as soon as problems arise.

    From what i can tell, these may be either first unit prototypes or cars that can not be resold for legal reasons. Usually, car makers will crush cars that cant be resold. In this case, it seems BMW is opting to make sure no parts can be re-sold. This includes the Airbags. In this case, its a liability problem.

      +Kyree S. Williams That has to be it. I worked for a car company doing motorsports builds, and almost all of our cars had to be destroyed after one year... even after being made into successful race cars. It sucked, but there was nothing we could do about it.

    It's an old video but they are almost brand new cars, no road film underneath, the engines have been run from the discolouration of the catalyst but they look straight from the production line, the gearbox oil is like new.
    Airbags triggered, some of the fluids removed (unless the bleed nipples were opened the brake lines will still be full) dampers drained, hood hydraulics drained, wheels removed, lights removed to who knows where, trim and hundreds of metres of wiring still in place. For a long time now (25 years at least) all those plastic panels have been marked with the type of plastic to aid proper recycling.
    This isn't recycling, my local scrapyard did a far better job of recycling decades ago. All they needed was a shed, a pit, a bucket and a barrel to sling the fluids in.
    Almost everything else would be stripped marked and racked.

    I assume that not many people know how car factories work. most of these cars are pre-production models. some of them even don't have chassis numbers. some parts on them are not final versions or rejects. So it is a big liability for a car manufacturer to sell pre-production cars or parts. if you make an accident with it the company would be in big trouble.
    If you remember similar things happened before. When Mazda's ship capsized they've destroyed all the cars and salvageable parts, so that nobody could use them. There was also an incident with Dodge Vipers. Dodge donated some pre-production Viper's to schools. And somehow some of them got to the streets. Dodge had to find and destroy all of them.

      These are production cars which were deemed "end of life vehicles" and recycled according to European Union environmental directives.
      By law, BMW is required to dispose of their own cars in this manner should they be deemed ELV at no charge to the last owner on record.
      Other manufacturers who sell their vehicles in Europe must also comply; they must recycle the cars they made once they've been deemed ELV.

      I think the car can survive more 5-10 years from now in a good condition if i can get rid of the little rust that keeps appearing on the fenders.The engine is untouched except for the cylinder head and now i can feel the wear on the piston rings but is not very bad...i think the piston rings could survived more if i didn't used this type of fuel (liquified petrol gas).10 years ago i changed the gearbox from 4 speed to 5 speed and some electrical stuff.In five years it only need a oil change and a bolt on a brake calliper.

    It's simple. These are pre-production or test cars. They can't be legally sold to drive on public roads in most countries. They have to recycle them. And, even if they were legal, most automakers would not sell them to the public anyhow. Too much of a potential legal liability since they are pre-production and/or test vehicles.

    I think these cars were onces practice repair cars where they take a few production cars make it unregistrable for public use, send them off to technical automotive schools where they can learn how to fix BMW. Ones the car's out of production i think within 5 years these cars are scrapped off,,You cannot sell them as parts and they're usually contract leased off by BMW, onces it's done you just send them back and they'll send you a newer model

      +Scott K They're prototype or cars that have not made it through the entire production process. I work at the Mini factory and sadly I see a lot of brand new cars which have never even been started getting destroyed. its usually down to something minor which later becomes too big of a job, or some sort of error in part sequencing etc. I once saw a car come down the line with literally just the chassis and the engine. it had what we call "slave parts" such as wheels etc (which are actually really expensive alloys that just get thrown around the factory) so it can roll off the line to be sent for scrapping. Very wasteful, but its a big company with a big reputation. its a small price we pay to ensure the customer gets their new car in perfect working order.

  • @impreza2010drifty
    @impreza2010drifty 8 лет назад

    For all the people complaining about these cars being destroyed it's not that big of a deal what's so ever. Yes they look new and are expensive but if they are test mules they where destined for this fate and if they have flaws or environmental damage the manufacture deems this as a easier way to get rid of them. Yes they could go and resell them but you have lawyers who will do anything to make a buck and customers who will do anything to get stuff free. It's a way for them to cover themselves on that part. And also it's not like they go and just dump everything into a landfill they recycle as much as they can. Even them pulling engines out those will go to a recycling phasility like everything else that can be recycled and be reused in new products. So stop whining about it and deal with reality.
