    For context; this show is called Orville, the two men you see here are from a race called the Moclans, a predominantly male species who consider females to be an abnormality, and rectify it at birth through surgery.
    Bortus, the one who wasn’t born female, is an officer on the Orville, which is a galaxy crossing observational starship (iirc), and Klyden, the one who was born female, is his mate.
    The show goes through a lot of Moclan culture and nature- and one of these issues is how they treat females. Lo and behold, Bortus is a very open minded individual, and ended up watching those old 80’s animated Christmas movies that were stop motion, specifically of Rudolf. He has a change of heart, now understanding that deformities can also make a person greater.
    I’m not doing the show justice with this explanation, it’s better to just watch it in all honesty.

      Spot on. But Rudolph came out decades before the 80's. I'm not THAT old! Lmao

      Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer came out in 1964 bro. In regards to the time period The Orville is set in it’s quite impressive that a movie from 1964 made it to the 25th Century lol

      Nah you do fine. Truth be told nothing but a good binge watch of the orville van do it justice. It's surprisingly good for being a seth McFarland spoof of star trek.

    Context: females are so discriminated against in their culture that female infants are given sex changes. Bortus and Klyden’s child was born female, so they’re debating whether to go through with the procedure or not. Bortus saw the story of Rudolph, and the lesson really stuck with him; the thing that made Rudolph an outcast was the exact thing he needed to save everyone, showing that differences can be powerful and valuable. Bortus doesn’t want to do the procedure on their child, but Klyden does

    Never have I ever been so blindsided by a reference to Santa Claus. My exposure to this show is solely through RUclips shorts and Tik Tok and this is the first time I've ever heard Santa Claus being mentioned.

      They showed Bortus Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and that made him change his mind about changing the gender of the baby😭

    It makes you wonder if females are really that rare, doesn't if?

      I had the same thought while females might be rare it is clear that females are 1.000 time more common than they convince the people

    I've wondered since I watched this show - why are there females if mating is done between two males? What's the role of females in their biology?

    I knew Klyden was born female after he told us. He was always bitching about something...

  • @VincentMcmanus.
    @VincentMcmanus. 3 дня назад

    This is confusing. When Bortus went to Mercer and told him about the egg, he said "I have laid an egg", indicating that Bortus was born female, and yet in this scene Klyden is saying he was the female all along.

    • @atomicskull6405
      @atomicskull6405 3 дня назад

      Moclan males can apparently lay eggs, makes me wonder if maybe they're really an hermaphroditic species with masculine and feminine body phenotypes and they're suppressing the feminine one. There are certain species of lizards that are analogous to this where the females can produce viable eggs on their own and males are born only rarely. In this case it's because the females have XX sex chromosomes and the males have a single X, there is no Y so when there is an error in mitosis and the X isn't copied over it becomes a male with only one X chromosome. Female only reproduction is easier but results in the exact same genes being mix and matched in an all female line, males are needed to mix genes between the female lines otherwise they'd be an evolutionary dead end which is why there is selection pressure to have both modes of reproduction in the species.

      @VincentMcmanus. 2 дня назад

      @atomicskull6405 but in your ecample, females still lay the eggs.
      I demand a Moclan biology class, now! We need it!
