Recently I accidentally left my phone in my desk at work. I was already on my way to an appointment when I realized I left it, so I didn't go back for it. I had the most relaxing evening I have experienced in a long time. Lesson learned: my phone, even though it offers convenience, is an absolute energy sucker. To study my Bible and really think, I need paper and a pen. I love that I can carry my Bible wherever I go on my phone, but I love my paper copy for study and quiet contemplation.

I personally LOVE the You Version BIBLE app and get so much from it! I love the plans, the verse of the day and the prayers I can save to my profile. I also totally understand using an actual bible and I love mine too. I agree with you that we can get distracted while using the app on our phone with other things but that happens to me too when reading the paper bible. I personally feel no matter your preference it’s important to read the Bible 🙏🏼 God Bless you all 🙏🏼❤️

I love your explanation of a “mental map” being created when we read our Bibles. It explains why the Bible I have used for 35 years is my go-to Bible. There are many highlights, and notes in it as well as all the tears and prayers that have been a part of that “map”. I can find verses by where they are on their pages more than the reference. I totally lose that when reading another. That Bible was rebound last year and will continue to be my favorite.

I love my physical Bible and making notes in the margins. I pray that one day my children will inherit my Bible(s) and read them with the notes and be blessed and encouraged. That would not happen with an app.

I was confident for quite some time that my Bible app was my go to, all I needed. I loved the plans, the verse of the day, and the convenience that it was so portable. I was sold lock, stock, and barrel. Until it just started feeling lacking. I felt rushed to finish and didn't dig deeper. I would get calls or texts and bc the screen was open I would get pulled away, if even for just a second. The enemy was using this to draw me away. I finally made the decision to go back to my Bible. I had missed how I could just let it fall open and read what the Spirit was leading me to read. Thank you Diana for sharing this. I hope this information encourages others to dive deep into His Word and just let it permeate their souls.

Its so true that if we use our phone to read the bible, we can get distracted in so many ways! And then not really retaining what we are reading from Gods Word. When we spend time with family/friends we want them to give us their full attention! God is wanting the same from us!! You are such a blessing, encouragement and inspiration Diana!!!!!!

Finally, someone is saying this!! Thank you!! I am a firm believer that the BIBLE (paper book) is what should be used when studying the Bible. The phone is a phone - filled with distractions. I can’t read off my phone, not even use bible studies on the phone. This is what I teach my kids - when you go to the beach you take the beach balls, sand toys, etc. when you go to church - you take your bible! Simple.

When I was in college, I could recall information by thinking about where on the page in the textbook that information was found, so what you said about our minds mapping it out makes so much sense.
I thought it was so interesting to learn that our brain uses up nutrients when we multitask or switch from one task to another. (I think that’s what you said.). I answer emails at work about a variety of topics and I do the task required when I read the email, but maybe I should group those similar tasks for later.
    Thanks so much, Diana!

A great piece of advice given to me for Prayer and Bible Study time is to have a notepad (electronic or othewise) next to you for any "to do" items that might come to your mind (or, dare I say it, the Holy Spirit brings to your attention so you won't forget) and jot them down, and then return to your chapter.

As I'm watching this I'm reading comments, thinking about my experiences. Life changes change routines. Doing The Bible Recap has taken me 2 years....I notice when I read my paper bible I remember so much more. I've always understood I need to visualize the writing, my notes, the color of ink and placement on the page of important points. The app on my phone whether I read it digitally or listen to it is helpful when I'm driving long distances or need to catch up. Thanks for the info!

I switched from my bulky Bible to a Kindle years ago. I only had the bulky Bible with me when I went to church or Bible study. I kept the Kindle in my purse so I almost always had it with me. Now I read my Bible on a smartphone. It is always with me, in my pocket. I've read more of the Bible since upgrading to the smartphone than I ever did before. It is always with me, five minutes here, twenty minutes there. There is no more I could be reading it right now during my lunch period but I left it at home, or oh, it's in my purse which I left upstairs. It is in the pocket of my jeans, so as long as I'm dressed, it is right there with me. I have no excuse for not whipping it out at a moment's notice to fill a little down time. I can still highlight, make notes, etc. during my reading. My smartphone is set so that when I open my Bible app, the phone automatically goes into Do Not Disturb mode. It just requires a certain amount of discipline.

I definitely understand the mental maps idea. It is something that frustrates me about using my phone for reading any kind of book. I also understand the idea of our mind is more on notifications and other things. I have so many notifications off and yet I still think of this little handheld computer as a go-to for many things and find it can be a challenge to turn the rest of everything off mentally for that time.
My problem is my eyesight. Even large-print bibles are hard for me. I can change brightness, colors, and font size on my phone. I use a paper journal to help me get engaged in what I am reading. It has been amazing to add a paper journal to take notes, write what I feel, ahas, and the reminders the Lord has for me.

What you say is valuable. I want to add what I've learned in the past 8-10 years. Due to migraines, reading has become difficult. As I discovered an online Bible app, it has become such a blessing! I can listen as the Bible is read for me - not only is it soothing to focus away from my pain, but the flow of listening for 30, 40, or 60 minutes has taught me the flow of the teachings and put many things in perspective. Another help with migraine is to read in dark mode. The dark background with light letters doesn't hurt my eyes.
I love my Bible(s), but I'm thankful for these opportunities 🤍

The information about all the studies about using your phone and multitasking was so helpful and interesting. Now I know why I'm so tired at the end of the day. In other things, I use my Bible app almost exclusively for listening to the Word during my work day. Though I get a little tired of the narrator's inflection. But I still find it a great way to hear the Word over and over.

I so agree with this. I lead an inductive Bible study which can be intensive at times (we are going through Romans now!) and this summer I decided to try something different while in between studies that would be less mentally taxing. I picked back up on The Bible Recap plan just to read scripture for the pleasure of it and not deep study. For “convenience “ I used the app plan on my phone. I began to notice after awhile that I really wasn’t connecting to what I was reading and was feeling spiritually dry. I finally realized it was because I was not using my physical Bible where I could touch the pages, make notes or comments and see the words in the whole context of where I was reading. You are so spot on. I love having the app for convenience when I need it but for daily reading I agree using a physical copy gives you a different connection to scripture.

I have always had a love of books. Even before I could read I would take books out of my parents bookshelf and just look at the words and wish I could read. I love the texture of the pages and just the physical book itself. Practical me uses electronic media now and while it is more efficient for some applications like looking up a recipe or other information, I still love my Bible and need to get back to taking it to church and not referencing my phone, which is so distracting with other things that pop up. I do have a paper bible next to me though so I can take notes if I want to. I also like how the app keeps track of the days I've spent in the word consistently. Today is day 350. On day 70, I treated myself to the Life Application study bible. I love it! I have the bible app read to me, I listen to TBR, then I read the notes from the day's reading in my study bible. I recently switched to a large print Bible ( cuz me and my eyes are getting old!) and I'm having to develop that paper perspective all over again in my new Bible. Not only are the verses in the "wrong" place on the page, the chapters seem longer because of the larger print. I'm learning to navigate and love it though! I always take a paper Bible to church, but I find it helpful to have my phone handy for those rabbit trail verses.

I have a flip phone that i dont carry with me everywhere i go. i am very plain and simple. I love reading from the actual book plus this way you have to learn where all the books in the bible are!!

One of our former pastors really made it a point to get us to open our pew Bibles in church. He told us to open our Bibles and paused so we could do that. I think it was a good way to get us in the habit.

Not all people using their phones are distracted. I make notes of the sermon on my phone and send them as an email to myself so I find myself reading the message again when I open my inbox. Also I can easily copy paste bible verses into my notes. Making notes helps me focus and listen more intently. I used to do this in a notebook but find typing more convenient as sometimes I can't even read my own handwriting. 😁

I use my phone Bible app because I have arthritis and carpal tunnel and I turn pages slowly and too many pages turning causes me pain. Maybe I should try to use my app less at home but it is very needed in church services.

I must be the odd one, because that doesn't happen to me. I put on my ear buds and listen and read along with the Bible.

Also wanted to add- there have been many times I retrieve my phone to look up other scriptures that I can’t find:…”hey Siri, what scripture talks about the faith of Abraham “ for example- it’s super helpful for that purpose😉👍🏼

Too busy is a lie. I fell for that lie for literally decades. Now I look back and realize I wasn’t too busy, I cheated myself by thinking I was too busy to read the Bible or spend time talking with God. If you have time to watch a TV program you aren’t too busy. If you have time to watch a RUclips video you aren’t too busy. If you have time to “catch up” on Instagram or Facebook you aren’t too busy. Pay yourself first! Time with the Lord is more important than everything else to your wellbeing. Too busy is a lie and I wish I hadn’t fallen for it.
