I am 81 hrs old bit listening to music of 50’s and 60’s brings right back to that era. Life was easy back then and music helped to make it that way. Inlisten to this stuff every day. ❤
Love this song! I am 76 and love to hear the oldies! I’ve seen the Beatles, Elvis, the BeeGee’s and others. What a treat to still be able to listen to all these guys!
Early 1962 smash-hit record on which one can hear the R&B vocal harmony style (aka doo-wop) turning into smooth Chicago soul right before our ears. It was the first record I ever bought (1/27/62), and it went on to become a massive R&B/pop-rock crossover hit, both in Chicago and nationally: #1 R&B and pop for five weeks / #2 R&B hit of 1962, #4 pop hit of 1962 (in Cash Box and Music Vendor). Grammy Hall of Fame record.
Saturday morning January 27, 1962: I (as a 12-year-old) was set on making my first record purchase, one 45 single being all I could afford. It turned into the Battle of the Genes for me. I had intended to get the current #1 record in Chicago, "Town Without Pity" by Gene Pitney, but when I noticed that Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl" was debuting that day at #27 on the WLS Top 40 Silver Dollar survey and that the store had it, I just couldn't resist the newer, shinier object. The very next week Pitney lost a face-off with Gary (U.S.) Bonds' "Dear Lady Twist" and then I was out of money for a while. I never did get "Town Without Pity," which was a real pity for Pitney.
I was around nine years old when this song was a hit, and I remember being fascinated by it. Chandler was of course fantastic, but I thought the background vocals were the coolest thing I’d ever heard. This was pre Beatles, and of course when they came along everything changed...but this is a reminder that there was great music happening before the Beatles came along.
Du, du, du, became Duke and Earl was part of the group, so Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl, duke, duke - pure genius, and thanks for such a wonderful song, all these years, still rings 1962, how do you do?
sorry not to sound ingnorant or anything,, but i grew up listing to alot of diff kinds of Music,, thanks to my fam,, and i have always adored oldies the most,, love this song, know it by heart,,, but for the life of me i never,, ever knew the singer was African American,,,, shame on me,, but i just didnt knw, and i just now checked the vid for it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Mind blown,,,,,,,,, ty Utube for these vids,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ty
fantastic song this "Duke of Earl" ..fantastic singer Gene Chandler .. there is something in his voice ' not of this earth " .. May be one of the best singer in the soul music .
Gene Chandler was born on July 6, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois. He is a Grammy Hall of Fame inductee and a recipient of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award. Today, July 6, 2022, he is celebrating his 85th birthday. He will be 87 years old on July 6, 2024
I'm 10 years older than you and I love this song and all of the oldies but a lot of people do find it weird that I even know this stuff but it's because my father was born the same year as this artist so my father grew up on this stuff and played it constantly when I was younger.
It's not that you're weird... it's that most people are ignorant of music history and have poor taste, in general. Never listen to music that you don't enjoy, and never stop listening to music that you love. Don't let stupid people influence you.
I remember going to the show with my big sister to see the Duke of Earl on some moving and she was just screaming and all over the floor and I was cracking up
In 1962, I was only five years old but I love to listen to this song at 66 years old. I look at the fine young women in this video, all natural and no tattoos. Women were women back then.
Love this It’s noticeable the dancers and audience where all white But I always recall this legend and his song from then Thanks for your bravery mr chandler 1960
So people here is a fun fact question 🤔 what record label was Gene Chandler signed too when he made this song well the answer is Vee Jay records out of Gary Indiana RIP Mrs Vivian Carter for having a great ear for talent

Happy birthday Gene! 86 years young!👍🏾😁
The respect I have for people over 80 solely on how much change they’ve seen and come to understand.
You live 80 years and you will see a lot of change also .
… and whoever singing bass is absolutely “bringing”it!!
I was in Navy boot camp in San Diego 1962 with Gene Chandler, but he was a few companies ahead of me.
i am his father
Cool! I went to boot in San Diego too but much later, 1978. Class individual and classic song! Wow!
Great, unforgettable Gene Chandler! Thanks always for your music. Happy birthday where you may be

Wow he's the same age as my father and this song is great 👍😊 When I was younger my dad would play this song because it reminded him of his youth.
Born and raised in Chicago! My mother used to play this song all the time listening to her Dusty's/Old school!
Looking forward to his 86th 🎩🥃
Thank so much for your information. May God Bless Gene Chandler

75 years old watching here in the Philippines. Fond memories of listening to this on our AM radio when I was a teenybopper back in Minnesnowta.
I am 27 and I still haven't met anyone who loves oldies like this. How weird am I then

The Duke of John Wayne brought me here.
Sadly, John Wayne was a racist which is why his star has dimmed so much over the decades.
The Duke we honour here is Gene Chandler.
All these years I didn't know an African American man sang this song , first time I saw the music video today.
Very nice song 👍
