Longtime Mairsil player here- I love seeing other players enjoying what may be one of the most unique commanders in the game!
It was rough seeing the misplay on the Tainted Pact, though! If Ant didn't have access to a lot of the cards that he mistakenly put in his hand and then discarded, the game could have gone very differently.
Torrent of Hailfire is an interesting wincon for Mairsil. I'm not currently running it in my list because once you get the "Lotus, Quicksilver, Staff" combo you can just gain infinite life and draw an arbitrarily large amount of cards, letting you grab pretty much any wincon you want from your deck. I like running wincons that I can cage from the graveyard because I run a lot of loot/rummage/personal wheel effects and having to pitch a Torrent in the early game feels really bad.
Caging the Staff first was a very gutsy move! Ant had the Riptide Laboratory out but it's a pretty mana-intensive way to bounce Mairsil, which definitely feels slow in the early game. SoD is one of those cards that freaks people out when it gets caged, even if you can't do anything degenerate with it yet. I'm surprised he didn't try to find something like Aetherling before initially casting Mairsil.
Another thought- near the beginning of the game, as Christian was resolving a Light-Paws trigger, Wally said he would cast PtE in response on Light-Paws if he searched for an enchantment that gave Light-Paws protection. This unfortunately does not work because Light-Paws puts the enchantment onto the battlefield on resolution of his ability. Once the search begins, no player gains priority until the enchantment is already on the battlefield. If Christian chose an enchantment that gave Light-Paws protection/hexproof, it would be too late to cast anything targeting him.
The only time to remove Light-Paws before he gets a protection enchantment is prior to the resolution of his ability (I learned this lesson the hard way playing against Zur the Enchanter).
Hello. I'm looking to build Mairsil as my first true combo deck. He looks so incredibly fun and versatile. Im setting myself a budget of 150 bucks. Any tips on how to make the best out of it? Since I'm newish to the format and my deckbuilding skills revolve around synergistic value pieces.
Edit: I'm playing casual EDH mostly, so battlecruiser meta - I want to combo, but I don't want to combo off to easily.
@@bloodex91 Sure thing! Mairsil is a pretty archetypal "toolbox" commander, meaning he wants specific cards for specific situations.
The good news is that a lot of his key pieces aren't really played anywhere else so most of the deck can be quite affordable. Aetherling, Pack Rat, Nevinyrral's Disk, Arcanis the Omnipotent, Mirage Mirror, Quicksilver Elemental- all of these cards aren't hard to get at all.
The problem is that you'll need a better-than-average tutor/draw package for Mairsil due to his need for specific cards. Most decks tend to run multiples of the same effect for redundancy, but many activated abilities Mairsil decks use have only been printed on one or two cards. Without good card selection, it's easy to end up in the situation where you have a lot of cards in the cage but none of them really do anything.
Also, Mairsil is the kind of deck where he's either doing absolutely degenerate stuff or nothing at all. It's very hard to build "fair Mairsil" and I somewhat recommend people against trying. Once you have Nevinyrral's Disk and an Aetherling or regenerate ability in the cage, the game is essentially in a soft lock and will only get harder for your opponents as the game progresses.

I guess I want the "fair" part to be wheels effects instead of tutoring since just throwing 3 wincons in my Gy feels a bit boring.
Will still run all the degenerate cards.
@@bloodex91 I find that even with a good amount of tutors, my deck doesn't feel like it just plays the same game every time. The tutors just help the deck pivot when needed.
Since you're on a budget, I'd at least recommend some budget tutors- Unmarked Grave, Final Parting, Buried Alive, and Oriq Loremage can all be obtained quite easily. The last one is a key piece in a lot of great Mairsil interactions and combos.
I personally feel wheels are a bit of a trap in most decks, especially when they have to be played at sorcery speed. For this reason all of the draw spells in my Mairsil deck are either rummages or personal wheels. Tolarian Winds and Ancient Excavation are two wheel-like effects that can be played at instant speed and don't refill the opponents' hands or graveyards. Faithless Looting, Careful Study, and Frantic Search are excellent loot effects that aren't particularly mana-intensive.
I feel like Thought Scour, Consider, and Mental Note might also be quite good but I haven't tried them out in my deck yet.
When Tom uses the counter to stop the Spit Flame, he wouldn't of had the treasure made from Storm Kiln Artist just yet, so he couldn't have countered. That trigger was still on the stack before it resolved.
mairsil is by far and away my favorite commander! it's so rare to actually see any videos on him.

36:52 He wouldn't have the treasure, as the next in stack was the kill spell, targeting Mairsil. Wouldn't have the mana to cast counterspell. (Storm-Kiln treasure would still be on stack to enter)

24:35 Mairsil couldn't have targeted Light Paws, due to the protection from creatures. Would have had to be done in response to the targeting of the enchantment.

Great game but if I might offer perhaps one technical suggestion on the editing front - switching from the end of the game to the post game table talk you run the entire chad magic logo clip which is 5 seconds. Given that we know the video is over it’s an opportunity for the viewer to leave for the next video without hearing about your giveaway and Patreon. Maybe an abridged version, or a shorter one second transition might help retain viewers? Just a thought. Love the channel

Have you seen how Miirym intersects with Roaming Throne? Essentially you end up with 3 thrones therefore you get to copy each other dragon 4 times 🫠🙃

Can someone explain what Ant is doing when he resolves Tainted Pact around the 31 minute mark? Why does he say that he’s “going to choose anger”?
He seems to have misunderstood the workings of the card/confused the card with Demonic Consultation.
He simultaneously mashed 3 cards together there - Demonic Consultation by naming a card, Tainted Pact by stopping at a duplicate card, AND Ad Nauseum by putting them all in his hand. 😂😂
He doesn’t know how Tainted Pact works. He is treating it like a Demonic Consultation…you have to name a card, then you exile the top 6 cards, and then you reveal/exile cards until you reveal the named card. If the named card is in the top 6 cards you exiled you exile your entire deck.
I missed that he also kept all the cards he exiled until the edited explanation. He clearly did not read the card and has tried to watch cEDH videos. He treated Tainted Pact like both an Ad Nauseam and Demonic Consultation. 😱 If TP worked like that it would be insane!!!

5:53 if he had given It protection, you would not have been able to respond at that point because the aura he is searching for goes straight to the battlefield attached to her. You have to respond as the first aura is cast targeting lightpaws
