Meghan: Sounds like you know all about scale, thank you for your knowledge. Include your website or YT channel to share more.
I don't think Ned considers himself an "influencer" or "professional." Rather, just a plant/garden lover sharing personal experience. Don't influencers do what they do to get paid?
Thst aside, not sure about the scale species, etc but I've treated a few completely different plants with this method (e.g. ivy, fig, spider). So I can say from my personal experience that it definitely works.
Move it away fm other plants and do not put it back in its original space til you know the scale is all gone, scale does spread. Clean the stem right to the soil, wipe down EVERYTHING including the pot & water tray, inside edges too. Spray the top of the soil right to the stems. Also, you may feel a "sticky substance" on/around the plant, pot. I've found it on my window! That is from the scale. Wipe it off w/ the alcohol pad. Some scale are resistant to removal so you may have to rub a bit. Too resistant or a lot of leaf damage? Remove the leaf. If it's a bad infestation you may want to transplant but don't rush it, see how the plant responds. Inspect the plant frequently and repeat treatment (minimum) weekly. I treat my plants First week: 2x/wk | 2-4 weeks: 1x/wk for about a month then watch it. Repeat as needed.
When you are confident it's under control change you can repot, I remove the old soil.

I don't particularly know "all about scale", considering entomology is not my field of study, there are thousands of species of scale, and there is far to much information about this pest than I care to study at this point. However, I am a botanist, and I have several entomology friends who have shared some tidbits with me 😊 also, you're right! "Influencers" are technically paid. I used the term in the context of: an individual who has a large following and/or is highly admired in the online community of botany, and posts content that influences the acts of others/posts content with advice on what another individual should do. Ned may not consider themselves an influencer, but based on the popularity of the video and that criteria above, the internet clearly does! Which isn't a bad thing. It's something to be proud of!

What if the leaves are very small or there are too many? And how do you treat the base of the plant since you can't wipe it down as easily?

Can I ask What experience do you have in the field of pests, do you have an update about on how this plant reacted to the rubbing alcohol, do you have other information about the particular species of scale you treated and how it responded to the rubbing alcohol?
I ask these questions because your video is one of the most viewed on RUclips but it is lacking some VERY important information. Scale is not always going to represent as shiny large bumps, nor will it always look like the majority of the magnified photos on Google search. In fact, most often it won't look like either at all. Scale has hundreds of species That will represent themselves as an infestation differently and this will vary on each plant species. Additionally, immature scale or "crawlers" will not be bumps, and mature scale change in appearance as time goes on, as does the effected portion of the plant.
For example one of the most common species to effect philodendron appear as very tiny bumps (same sheen as the plants foliage, not shiny) initially. Overtime they will cluster and become matte in sheen, and eventually they will be brown, and appear "dried" or crispy. It will look as if the plant has scarring.
I just feel like it's our duty as influencers, experienced hobbyists, and professionals, to ensure all the information is out there and available!

Well, I was once a member of the grammar police also, parading around the internet with my virtual red pen🖋, crushing dreams, and filling strangers with shame and embarrassment for simple spelling mistakes. So you're right, you do deserve two!
I have since graduated to parading around the world wide web with a pile of research papers and my multiple degrees, correcting houseplant hobbyists who spew ridiculous lies and widely spread myths about plants. I hope to one day be given a cookie for all my hard work also 😆

You don't need to dilute the rubbing alcohol? Seems too strong for the plant...
