  • G'day, everyone! In today's episode I show you how I got rid of scale from my Monstera Thai Constellation (and Monstera Albo). It was a shock to find it, but controlling the pest isn't the hardest thing in the world.

    Have you ever had scale on any of your plants? If yes, what did you do to remove them? Comment below!

      I did eradicate them from two orchids by checking them frequently and using isopropyl alcohol to pick them off like you’re doing.
      I think at some point I sprayed them with a mild insecticide, thinking it might kill off the crawlers before they form a shell but it was awhile ago

    I realised I had scale on one of my plants after watching another video about pests. I had no idea what they were before that 😬 I used the same method as you to get rid of them but I still need to check back on the plant regularly and remove a few here and there. Keep up the great work with the videos 😊

      Thanks, Page! Yeah, fortunately they're one of the easier ones to get rid of. Hope it's all gone now!

    Scale is a common problem on landscape plants here in Florida. The Sago palm is the absolute worst for Scale. My husband treats them regularly with a SYSTEMIC product. Interestingly enough I just found Armored Scale on one of my Little Gem Magnolias yesterday. I just mushed them because I didn't have time to treat them. One thing you have to know is that (according to my Brother that does Ornamental Pest control) there is a very short time to treat Scale. Once they harden it is hard for chemicals to penetrate the shell. Scale live in the soil, hatch out, and climb the plant. Ive personally never seen them on a house plant. Something that you brought home had to have had them in the soil. I hope that all your plant babies stay healthy from the bugs that life throws at us.

      Cheers, Dianne! Yeah, I noticed them on a few plants I'd purchased, so they must've entered the collection that way.

    Insecticidal soap for plants work great!
    After you do the process of scraping them off and etc use the soap to wash your plant once a week or more if needed and keep up with it and you shouldn’t have bad pest problems :)

    Got them on an anthurium, thankfully an isolated incident but it was covered! Went in with soaked cotton buds and then a cloth. I was just experimenting with both alcohol and dish soap because why not. I had to repeat the processes a few days in a row. Fun times

    I’ve had infestations of wax scale on anthurium and my ornamental sweet potato- I always remove manually and clean the leaves. Repeat every few days as needed! I usually use a cloth with a soap alcohol water mix after manually then scraping off. I despise these things!

      I wanted to note I’ve heard of ants carrying scale to plants in a weird symbiotic parasitic relationship. So watch out for ants on your plants as well!
      My major first infestation was hallmarked by droves of sugar ants all over my plants.

      Wow, I'd never heard that before. That's pretty crazy if true. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for ants in the future then!

    I haven’t heard you speak of any preventive measures you take? you should mix up some tea tree and peppermint Castile soap, alcohol, and small amount of hydrogen peroxide. And use this is a leaf cleaner and a preventive. I found the exact recipe on Liquid Dirts website. It works on spider mites and i’m sure many others but it’s a nice way of cleaning the plant too. If you don’t start with some type of preventative your whole collection will be wiped out Pete. Just a suggestion

      Cheers, mate. I use a lot of beneficial bugs on a 3 monthly basis as well as sprays.

    Hand removal like you have done. Also spray the whole plant with alcohol and hand clean again later. Then, in bad cases (or not so bad too) use a horticultural spray oil that uses PARAFFINIC oil. I have used this method since the '80s and have never seen plant damage. But test first to ease your mind.

    I haven't had scale like you do, maybe mine were dead ones as they were hard lumps. I've had mealy and spidermites though 😬

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  2 года назад

      Interesting. Did you treat your plants for the mealy bugs and spidermites and that may've killed them?

    • @HelenMcLean
      @HelenMcLean 2 года назад +1

      @@petevsplants7516 They've all been on different plants. So the spidermites were on a Bangalow palm (hosed, wiped & neem oil sprayed), the mealy bugs were on an Alocasia plant and the only thing I think has worked is a systemic tablet treatment 🤞 and the scale (or at least I think that's what it was), I found today while cleaning the leaves of a different Bangalow palm. This plant had also been given the systemic tablet treatment and so I'm thinking what I saw is dead - or something else. It was lumpy and powdery when I picked it off 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

      @@HelenMcLean ah what a pain. Yeah I did all the same for my spider mites and mealies too, similar thing where they were on different plants. I'm still bracing myself for a horrific outbreak eventually... that'll be fun.
      Well if it's dead when you pick it off that's always a good thing hahaha
