- The Dornier Do 31 was an experimental vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) jet-propelled transport designed and produced by West German aircraft manufacturer Dornier.
The development of the Do 31 was motivated principally by heavy interest expressed by the German Air Force in the acquisition of short take-off and vertical landing aircraft (STOVL)-capable aircraft. Such ambitions received a further boost from the issuing of NATO specification NBMR-4, which called for a VTOL-capable tactical support aircraft that would be operated in conjunction with the EWR VJ 101, a West German VTOL strike aircraft designed under the NATO contract of BMR-3.
A total of three aircraft, two flight-capable and one static airframe, were constructed and used for testing. On 10 February 1967, the Do 31 performed its maiden flight; the first hovering flight of the type took place during July 1967. - Авто/Мото
My Grandfather is the Famous "Drury Wood". He was a DO-31 Test Pilot and is pictured at 2:45 (he is the one smoking) he just passed away a 3 years ago. Rest In Peace Grandpa!

i just came here because our former president B.J Habibie
Wow 1950 was so futuristic 😳
The DO-31 was part of a VSTOL German Air Force. The VJ-101 was to be a successor to the F-16; the VJ-191 was to replace the FIAT G-91. The programs ended when it became clear that VSOL aircraft are technically possible, but maintaining such a fleet in widely dispersed areas wouldn't work. At the Hannover Air Show - probably in 1968, - the DO-31 gave a flight demonstration. The test pilot slow rolled the DO-31 as he flew over the runway - successfully. I was there and saw this unbelievable slow roll demonstration with the only flying D)-31 that was built. Our hearts were in our mouths....
Man, I would LOVE to see footage of that display! It turns out, it exists - but it hasn't been digitised...yet. :-( www.aparchive.com/metadata/WEST-GERMANY-AIR-SHOW/5ceebea6ab060424fc5b0432b5c3f94b
I think you meant the Starfighter (F104 G), not the F-16 (which only entered service in the 1980s, and never with the Luftwaffe).
@@Stadtpark90 Thanks for the correction. Of course I meant the F-104
That figures. It was partly motivated by the strategic position that West German and the West in general felt they were in in the early 1960's. With Cold War tensions being at some of their worst, it was believed that runways would be the first target in any invasion, so creating an entire airforce out of VSTOL aircraft was a way round this perceived problem. Like you said, it was supposed to serve with an interceptor and ground attack aircraft.
In Mustard's video about the DO-31, although it was about to lift more than any helicopter at the time, it turned out that much of what was actually being lifted was its own weight and with the tensions in the Cold War easing from the end of the 1960's, coupled with the technical challenges not being entirely resolved, the programme was shut down in 1970. It was a pity as it's a unique aircraft
Wow! I had never heard of this amazing aircraft before, it's beautiful, and the sound it creates when landing, OMG
I agree. This aircraft is very beautiful and futuristic. I believe that we can build it again but with more upgrades.
I bet it was 10x louder then this in real life. I stood below a Harrier landing dozens of times and they scream like no other jet I've been near landing like f18/f22/35.
Looks absolutely like a WWII super-project that was realized.
It was a brilliant solution for a problem that was largely non-existent. Still its one of those things which would have made the world more interesting had it gone forward. It might have found a good role in regional business travel or disaster response in undeveloped areas.
Tell that to the v22 osprey
The Osprey is not exactly an example of cost effectiveness. That doesn't matter for the military which has an unlimited draw on tax dollars, but there's a reason no commercial airline has bought any.
The man in high castle!
What a cool plane. I can see some of this plane in the Harrier.
FS2020 brought me here. Unbelievable they actually managed to fly that thing.
Same here
You could paint it gold and red and it wouldn’t look out of place in the Flash Gordon movie! 😁
I like the look of this airplane.
Makes more sense than the Osprey.
Fantastic.
Germany was clearly ahead of its time!
Yes, was and will never be😅
Wunderbar! Vielen Dank.
Wunderbar! Never seen one, what an impressive German aircraft. Maint. would have been a night mare. 2 main engines, and the wing pod engines to look after. But it worked, and the engeneering is impressive...
Wonderful plane !
Wow, I have never seen or heard of that kind of aircraft or that such an aircraft of that kind was in developed other than the hawker hurricane I learn something about aviation development every day thank to you
look at the EWR VJ 101 :)
Bc it came from the Nazis and you know were supposed to act like they never existed outside the holocaust lol🤷🏻♂️
Looks like something from Thunderbirds.......animated TV show.
Something like this, but without the VTOL capabilities, would be the ideal plane for me.
Thunderbirds are GO!
They should start producing them i saw one win i was 7, lovef it i am 64 now, it would give lear jet s hard time ,😁😁👍 jf.
It could well be more than medium heavy lift with some tweaks.
It could carry ifvs like Bradley and similar.
with fly by wire and electronic advancements I m sure this would be successfull
It's lack of practicality is why is wasn't successful.
@@SMlFFY85 Osprey a similar concept has lots of practical use
It had an extremely advanced computer for its time en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_DO-960
The aircraft looks so German as something out from WW2. Too bad, it was never operational, it would look great flying today.
It was operational, but in the end not needed.
looks safer than the osprey
Maybe the test phase of the osprey but not the current osprey.
Yes its osprey but with turbo ventilator energy
Problem was it payload was shit for the cost of the plane
The principal is sound, the British harrier made it practical into production
Come on the British!!!!
F-35 is better
The Harrier is a fighter, this was a transport aircraft, basically a jet powered V-22 Osprey.
@@scratchy996 jet powered v-22 ospreys exist already
@@fedra5873 the V-22 Osprey has turboprop engines, not the same as jet engines.
Built with the latest technology it would be a superb STOL plane i bet. (No pods)
Cool
Couldn't find a use for it, I guess. I suppose in future someone will. Sad case of ahead of it's time. I hope someone packed the plans and Construction notes away safely.
It's a faster V-22 Osprey.
I like the design, but having extra engines for lift only is not a very elegant solution.
That thing was a fuel guzzler.
Fascinating - why did it have that extremely long nose extension? 🤔
It's a pitot tube and had to be kept clear of the engine thrust
Wouldn't have been on the production version.
Grandes GERMANOS NÓRDICOS
English title... English description but then it's German audio?
did the test pilots have ejection seats?....
Good question - yes it did:- www.historynet.com/dornier-record-setting-vtol-jet-transport.htm
Please add more commercials
i cant believe u watch this and think "oh yeah this used to exist in my reality in the 50s and 60s "do you not recognize technology manifesting into a new timeline with huge advancements happrning eairler than before ...now germany had a jet in 1939 better than the me 202...and now the hortens have sll fuk kinds of fkying wing crafts not just the 1 recovered prototype...the have a literal flying V shape aircraft...like the shape of the nevada mass sightingin the 90s
I don't think test pilots are human
Dornier vtol e o penúltimo
VTOL airliners never got anywhere despite numerous paper darts and the odd prototype like this one. Too much dead weight complexity and noise?
There's usually something around that you can use as a runway.
The flying narwhal
