Belichick began his coaching career in 1975, and by 1985 was the defensive coordinator for New York Giants head coach Bill Parcells. Parcells and Belichick won two Super Bowls together (XXI and XXV) before Belichick left to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 1991. He remained in Cleveland for five seasons, and was fired following the team's 1995 season. Belichick then rejoined Parcells, first in New England, where the team lost Super Bowl XXXI, and later with the New York Jets.

Yes indeed - and that was the one moment in the whole presser where Bill looked like he might actually betray some deep-seeded emotion. Just talking about Modell and that last year in Cleveland was painful.
Thing was Belichick wanted that Cleveland Browns job more than anything. It’s hard to believe now, but in 1991 Browns were one of the NFL’s cornerstone franchises. They were the first real dynasty of the modern era, the best organization in pro football for decades. Their history was tangible - same uniforms, same glorious old stadium. Belichick loves NFL lore. The chance to carry on Paul Brown’s legacy was a dream come true.
But Art Modell owned the team...and that experience was soul crushing. And I really do think Bill was hurt by the idea of the Browns leaving Cleveland...he was going to be the Paul Brown of his generation and it was starting to finally happen with the 11-5 season in 1994. Belichick was going to bring the glory back to Municipal Stadium.
That dream died the first Sunday of November 1995. And I don’t think Bill fully recovered until he won the third Super Bowl in 2004. That was when the Pats became an actual dynasty, which was Bill’s dream in Cleveland.

As I recall, asa Pats fan, we knew he was coming, but there wasn’t a ton of excitement about it, given his mediocre head coaching record, at the time. But, he was being honest about wanting to enter a stable situation, which the Krafts certainly provided. I mean, his previous owner, while a head coach was Art Modell, who not only moved the Browns, but has the distinction of having fired two of the five or so best coaches in history. Bob Kraft certainly didn’t do that, and Pats fans thank them both.

He wanted to step out from under the ominous shadow of Parcell's influence and get 100% control of football decisions on his "own" team. That was not going to happen with the Jets. At the time, Parcells was seen as a football coaching master and somewhat of a tyrant, and so it's easy to imagine him being reluctant to relinquish full control to a protégé. But Belichick was seen as a robotic defense guru who might potentially have significant shortcomings as a head coach and organizational leader, due to the mixed results in Cleveland and this perception that Parcells was the true guru There was a lot of skepticism in the NE media, although in general most fans were optimistic.
