    Seeing as though I get loads of comments saying something like "Italy never conquered Ethiopia..." I'll copy and paste a response I gave to someone.
    I think this is just a case of semantics. More often than not the 2 (conquer/invade) are interchangable, for instance you could say the Norman invasion/conquest of England. And this is how I use it, but I'm still going to defend my choice of words because I'm just like that.
    Especially because A lot of people have said this and it seems that Ethiopian nationalists get riled up over which word is chosen (of course I can hazard a guess as to why they care so much).
    But I think the Italians didn't just "stay." And you also couldn't say it was an occupation because that usually doesn't involve direct rule or annexation. The Ethiopian government on the otherhand was ousted, it was absorbed into Italian East Africa and Italy acted like a conqueror by building roads, redesigning Cities and recruiting locals into their armies.
    Sure it was very brief and their control was limited. And I often hear the military resistance proves it wasn't a conquest, but I think you'd struggle to find a conquest that didn't face opposition, sometimes for centuries.
    I'd say there are instances when the terms aren't so interchangeable - for instance Germany invaded Russia but didn't conquer it. But I think you could say Ethiopia was briefly conquered if you go by this definition: "the subjugation and assumption of control of a place or people by military force."
    You may have a different definition, however I think we will just start endlessly splitting hairs.

      Jabzy we more or less did this because some time ago Italy claimed it has conquered/ annexed us ( illegal claims ) and we can't tel them do that lol. Sadly our monarchy did get overthrown and our country soon fell into chaos after it...well so did Italy...i guess we are not so different after all :/

    In my opinion the Italians failed at colonizing Ethiopia, a five year occupation using advanced weapons and mustard gas did nothing for Italy. They gained almost nothing, and Ethiopia shows few Italian influences today. The Ethiopians destroyed them, and they only won the second war due to a large army, and mustard gas usage.

      The colonized it but failed to win ww2 and keep it. Had it not been for the british and the UN ethiopia would have been colonized longer. After ww2 Italy was foced to relinquish italian east africa and only keep their other colonies as trusteeships under the UN.
      The Ethiopians destroyed them.
      Yet you say
      and they only won the second war due to a large army, and mustard gas usage.
      How on earth is that ethiopia destroying anyone?

      the best weapon in that entire effort was Shaka zulu was a fucking idiot who didn't realize what was going on. This nigga thought their inventions were witch craft but still they jumped out bushes with spears and wrecked white boys for years. It took 500 years plus the invention of guns for any of this ethnic based warfare to really take off not to mention, africa had 600 ethnic groups and languages, all european romance language speaking peoples rode together against those tiny ass groups it was childsplay. So let's use context there too.

    Ethiopia was and Allied Power. Some would say the first Allied Power given Salassie's UN speech calling for a united front against Fascism. If the allies won WWII, and the Ethiopian Emperor reigned and lived decades after while Mussolini was hung upside down dead after losing to the Allies, how did Ethiopia get 'conquered' by Italy. It's like saying Hitler conquered the Russia or France because of his attacks there.

      Derick Ofodirinwa because there was four years of peace between the Second Italo-Abyssinian War and Italy’s entry into the Second World War. Abyssinia was recognised as Italian territory, if Italy had not entered the war it would have continued to be. Abyssinia was not an Ally, nobody would have declared war on Mussolini to help it.

    “This was the first time...an African army decisively beat a European army”
    I think the Zulus were first with the Battle of Isandlwana, 1879, when they annihilated a British military camp and foiled the first invasion of Zulu territory. (Though the British did go on to win the war despite the initial humiliating defeat.)

Moreover the ethiopian warriors knew the territory while the Italians didn't know the exact confornation of the zone. The italians understimate Ethiopia and lost the war. Tipical error of a colonial power.

    Yes, at the most known battle in abyssinia history the italians were heavily outnumbered, some thing like 9 or 11 to 1. But you most understand that the source of this "unfair" battle was only because some italian leaders, including the president of that time, heavily underestimated our military power and our civilization capabilities as a whole. I am not skeptic that they thought the battle was going to look like the last battle between the zulus and the brits, where the brits were heavily outnumbered like the Italians yet won the battle.

    • @thecommentaryking

      eliran789 The ethiopians had guns the zulus not. But your explanations is very good

    • @eliran9231
      @eliran9231 6 лет назад +3

      TheCommentaryKing yeah it is a thing italy should have known before the war, and if they knew it, I don't know who was the retarded president at that time. But mussolini didn't want anything of that sort again, and brought a force of HALF A MILLION MAN in order to conquer and colonize ethiopia. I don't think any other european country used that much man power in order to colonize or conquer any african country. And in the end they even didn't colonized or conquered us effectively.

    • @thecommentaryking
      @thecommentaryking 6 лет назад +3

      eliran789 They made a protectorate, but not an effective one or that lasted long. I can say to you that the occupation of ethiopia was only a political move to show the powers that they were powerful.
      The italians had good soldiers it was the leadership and the equipment that was bad

    • @eliran9231
      @eliran9231 6 лет назад +3

      TheCommentaryKing I must agree on everything you said, and add to you last claim. Italians made more than just great soliders, but also a great nation with a great culture and many great persons throughout their history. BTW it is funny that italian leaders wanted to recreate the roman empire, and conquer abyssinia as part of their empire when in fact the roman empire and byzantine made great friends with the axumite empire.

      droid root Ask your self. Did japan take all of china or just portions? Did the Chinese government continue to exist or did they get totally defeated? Was china even administered by the japanese?
      Unlike china, ethiopia was totally defeated, totally annexed and totally administered.
      Those are the differences between occupations and colonization. Just because it was short doesn't change what colonialism is. If you want an example japanese colonialism look at south east asia.

      Wrong. Italy occupied some main cities like Addis Ababa, but not all of Ethiopia. Second, they didn't colonize Ethiopia. "Ethiopia was never colonized by a European power, but was occupied by Italians in 1936 (see below); however, several colonial powers had interests and designs on Ethiopia in the context of the 19th century "Scramble for Africa."

    Why couldn't Haile Selaisse defeat the Italians in the 30s? It's also a shame that Menelik never used the opportunity granted by defeating the Italians and expanding his borders to modernise a la Japan, but of course the situation was different so maybe it wasn't possible. Even after regaining control of the country after WW2, Ethiopia couldn't jumpstart like Japan, Germnay and others, maybe they didn't get American loans like the other nations, a missed opportunity.

If Ethiopia will fight Egypt today, Ethiopia will easily defeat by Egypt, the Ethiopian army isn't that powerful today. Romans. The Italians of today may have developed their language from Latin but the Italians have little to do with the Romans. The Italians are descendant of the Lombards, a Germanic tribe from northern Germany. their ruled the peninsula until being conquered by Charlemagne and the Franks. Overtime, the Lombards adopted the Latin language and combined it with their own Germanic language to form modern day Italian thus starting the Italian culture. By the time they did this, however, Roman culture was long dead and its language was only being used by the Catholic church for religious ceremonies

    In history everyone failes. Just like the ottoman empire. They lost Lybia to a new born country in less than a year. That country was Italy, that sent illiterate farmers to fight and still won against a kicking ass world power. But no one talks about it because "it's not cool for memes" right?

      I’m sorry if your perceive that Italy has been mistreated, but you have to understand the atrocity of invading another nation (let alone a Christian one. Would the Lord approve of the Catholic Church’s failure to intervene in the situation knowing that the people of Italy were going to brutally murder a Christian nation in vindictive greed for its past failures?) It doesn’t matter if France or Britain or Germany or or other Europeans nations are perceived as saints (it really doesn’t); what matters is that the people of Italy were swayed by the deceitful and chauvinistic words of a modern day autocrat and they who call themselves “Christians”, who currently house the Vatican , were manipulated to carry out a utterly immoral act. That is what matters! Italy did wrong, and you know it! Despite that, I agree, I do think that England and France’s imperialistic repercussions are not discussed as widely even though their action were force than that of Italy because they weren’t as humiliated by an African country.

      @@zemichaelatnafu1121 just to reply more "coherently" to your answer, invading another country is wrong. Everyone knows it. It matters if France or other countries are perceived as absolute saints because it sways people on learning proper history. On the previous message, I was referring to the first Italo-ethiopian war. Now onto the second, what happened was an absolute fucking disgrace and my god nobody here in Italy is proud about it. It's not like we brag about colonialism like in other countries (you guess what countries). We know it's bad and we don't interfere into other countries' business (unlike other countries, you guess which ones). The thing is: why a small country is made fun for their mistakes, but not a big one? I've never fucking heard anyone mocking or insulting Germany and Austria for losing two WW and causing millions of deaths. I always hear "they fought with honor" and not "bunch of wurstel eaters, get shit on".
      Anyway, my point is clear: once again, if you want to live in ignorance, carry on. But don't expect to be "a man of culture" or "a war expert/hero" just because someone made a meme. • @lilaa.6079
    @lilaa.6079 6 лет назад

    Ethiopia's claim of being the only country in Africa to never be colonized came at the expense of Eritrea's sovereignty and independence. In 1889, the Italians signed the Treaty of Wuchale with then Ethiopian king Menelik II who essentially granted Eritrea to Italy in exchange for recognition of Ethiopian sovereignty. Italy also promised Menelik II financial assistance and military supplies.
    Treaty of Wichale, Wichale also spelled Ucciali, (May 2, 1889), pact signed at Wichale, Ethiopia, by the Italians and Menilek II of Ethiopia, whereby Italy was granted the northern Ethiopian territories of Bogos, Hamasen, and Akale-Guzai (modern Eritrea and northern Tigray) in exchange for a sum of money and the provision of 30,000 muskets and 28 cannons. Source: www.britannica.com/event/Treaty-of-Wichale.
    Eventually, Ethiopia did defeat Italy in the battle of Adwa (approx. 100,000 Ethiopians vs 20,000 Italians) and afterwards Menelik signed an agreement recognizing Eritrea as a sovereign state of Italy.
    Basically, Eritrea was used as a political tool to gain leverage with the Italian colonialist when it was convenient for Ethiopia's survival. This should explain the Derg's barbaric regime, Woyane's betrayal and the common attitude of entitlement towards Eritrea.
    Let's pray and hope for peace, it's the only way to move forward and succeed, but it's equally important to know & remember the past accurately so we don't repeat the same mistakes.

    the Ethiopians had over 200k men with modern Russian rifles, whereas the Italians had 17k men with outdated blackpowder Vetterli Rifles. (mostly Askari) Ethiopia ended up as the victor due to the Italian public rioting over the pro-war stance of the government, forcing the Italian Expeditionary forces to withdraw. Congrats The first Decisive African victory was technically the First Zulu war, but most people don't count it because the British came back with their real army and beat them in the end. 3:17 conquered Ethiopia . what a joke . Stop writing your own history . We know our history . Ethiopia wasn't conquered by Italy .Now let’s have a look at Ethiopian history, specifically the years 1936 to 1941. The second Ethio-Italian war started a long time before 1935. The first Ethio-Italian war, which ended with Italy’s defeat and humiliation at Adowa in 1896, could be seen as the starting point. Italy wanted revenge and started the second war on October 3rd, 1935. It ended on May 7th, 1936 with the collapse of the Ethiopian Army, which had fought bravely but could not stand up to the poison gas and bombs raining from the Fascists’ airplanes. They marched into Addis Ababa on May 5th, 1936. It must be noted that Ethiopia never surrendered.
    The first of the Ethiopian patriots to start the guerilla warfare that would continue till victory day was Lij Hailemaria Mamo of Debre Damo. He attacked a convoy of Italians that were heading to Addis Ababa on May 4th, 1936 thus gaining him the name first of the Ethiopian Patriots or “Arbegna.” After him came resistance in each and every part of Ethiopia. The more the patriots fought the harsher the fascists became, and the harsher they became the more people joined the patriots. By the end of 1936, almost all of Ethiopia was up in rebellion and fighting a guerilla war.
    To name a very few of the patriots’ leaders:
    • Lij Hailemariam Mamo in and around Debre Damo
    • Abebe Aregay in and around Showa
    • Dejazmach Menegesha and Belay Zelleke in the the Gojjam are and around the Nile Gorge
    • Dejazmach Balcha “Aba Nefso” Safo in the Gurage lands
    • Dejazmach Hailu Kebede in the Lasta lands
    • There were Eritrean deserters who fought on the Ethiopian side, even when the patriots were losing.
    • This war was supported by civilians living in the occupied cities, they were called ‘Ye Wist Arbegnoch’ or the “inside warriors.”
    At no given time during those fives years were Italians not fighting for their lives. Apart from the cities where they had their garrisons the land a few kilometers away was controlled by the patriots and the vast countryside remained free.

      +InfoRome Nope, that's referred to as whitewashing history. What do you expect to hear in the white man's “encyclopedic” book? That they lost and could not achieve full control of the land/ people? Get real mate. It was under Italian occupation not colonization, there is an immense difference between the two. There were guerrilla fighters constantly challenging Italian military occupation within the country which prohibited the Italians from getting a strong foot hold on the land. This occurred to the mere extent of five years (this is nothing). There was no slavery, injustice upon the natives, etc. during that time. The five years consisted of various breakouts of guerrilla attack tactics against the Italian military strong hold which was clinging on the edge for control. The Ethiopian people have been warding off invaders for millennia and far out numbered the Italian forces. Next time don't give me some “extension of the truth” / lie some crappy white man written encyclopedias say.

    That was a nice concise modern history of Ethiopians defending themselves from foreign invaders. Thank you. However your final statement should have been stated in a different manner. We were not conquered by the Italians in the end. Yes they finally won a battle against us, only because of the airplane invention along with the illegal/unethical use of chemical warfare(mustard gas). After losing to us numerous times the Italians were afraid to face our fierce warriors on the ground in conventional warfare. It is more accurate to say our capital city was occupied for 5 years, but we formed the black lion movement to resist you from invading the rest of the country. We may have a 3rd world economy but all Ethiopians at least maintain their pride all the way to the grave knowing that neither the white race, the Arabians, the Turks, or any other Africans could conquer us.
