    !!!!!!SOLVED!!!!!! Ive had this noise 3 times now and it goes away when i change my oil. the oil only lasts 2 years. it is normal for it to only last two years even if you only put a 1000 miles on it. it deteriorates even quicker when the car stands for long periods. for me it comes back every two years till i service it, if i use the car every day, or once a week. ive been on all forums and no one seems to realize it.

    Thanks for this video! I've had exactly the same issue on my N42 engine, a weird growling type rattle that lasts for around a second after not driving for several hours. Always thought it might be the sound the vanos makes dry until it gets oil pumped to it, hopefully we'll find out soon what it is because that noise is annoying and worrying lol

      Try check the smallest oil filter seal inside the housing that we replace with every oil change, if the seal is worn, the pressure in the system will become low since the oil leaks trough and end up in the oil pan

Which Oil you Guys use ? If we have minus Celsius i dont have this rattle which i have everyday in the morning. So i think if the oil is thicker the oilpump builds more pressure. İve tried 0W40 5W40. Hello BimmerZen, I am having the same issue with my N42 engine. I tried already replacing the chain + chain tensioner, inspected VANOS units, replaced oil pump and this is still rattling. whats the black container next to windsceen wash and the thing ontop of the exhaust manfiold, my n46 318 doesnt have either of those?

    • @BimmerZen
      @BimmerZen  Год назад

      That black thing is the secondary air pump and the silver thing is the one-way valve. They are installed on most N42/N46 engines with EURO 4 emission standard. The secondary air pump is activated on cold startup for a minute or so and pumps extra air via one-way check valve in to the exhaust ports in the cylinder head. This way the catalytic converter heats up faster and the engine produces less emissions.

    When re installing the koged part or the vanos ( the one in contact with timing chain) does orientation matter? It looks like the impulse sender matters but the whole vanos assembly doesn't? Please explain. I need to know if it matters 😅

      @@tahirzeeshan500 Orientation of the sprocket is not important. The important part that needs to be oriented correctly is the impulse sending gear. These are oriented correctly with the front locking tool with pins that engage with the holes on the impulse sending gears.

    Dear BimmerZen: Thanks for a very helpful video, especially the procedure for removing a VANOS unit in situ.
    However, while you demonstrated how to replace an exhaust VANOS unit, you never explained why you thought it would solve the startup rattle? I couldn't see why it would work so was not surprised that it didn't cure the problem.
    Surely the symptoms point to oil starvation? Oil drains away from the cylinder head when the car is left standing, and this causes a rattle in the valve gear, etc. This stops once oil pressure is restored (about 1-2 seconds after starting the engine).
    I have found that turning the engine over (but not starting it) solves the problem because the oil pump is mechanical. So, the solution has to lie with the oil filter or related parts? Something is allowing oil to drain from the cylinder head...
    Anyway, sorry for the long comment and thanks as always for your hard work in marking these videos!

    • @BimmerZen
      @BimmerZen  2 года назад

      I have read on the internet that exhaust VANOS units get worn out and can cause the rattle. If you take a look at my VANOS inspection videos, you can see that there are some wear marks, so I thought that maybe the oil drains from the exhaust VANOS unit, causing it to start depleted of oil. Another possibility is that the VANOS unit locking pin gets stuck due to wear.
