I've owned 2 5th Gen 4Runners and I have to say they are such amazing reliable tanks. The 4runner does have back up sensors and the 4runner does have remote start and I'd like to see if you get the reliability with a KIA or a Ford.
Thanks for highlighting the errors I made in the video. I pinned a comment to advise I made some mistakes. I agree about the reliability and even admit that in the video. Not everyone keeps their trucks forever though. Thanks for checking out the video.
Most of why you would not buy one is exactly why I just bought a 2024. Old school tech, off road capable, tried and true reliability, etc etc. You can have your kia or cybertruck. I will keep my gen 5. But thanks for your thoughts on the matter. Good to hear different opinions. I made my choice and am happy. Go ahead and make yours and good luck.
New 2025 4runner will have a turbo. That's all I needed to know to avoid it. I'll be getting a 2024 4runner. Coming from a 2003 Highlander, I will appreciate the lack of an automobile fitted with the newest tech. I want a vehicle that will last a long time.
George, those five reasons are exactly why I, along with many others, chose to invest in a 5th gen 4Runner. The 6th gen 4R, with its unnecessary new tech and unproven 4-cylinder engine, just doesn’t inspire the same confidence in reliability. Here in Florida, I get a solid 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. If speed were my priority, I’d go for a V8 muscle car. But in the end, I’m thrilled to have spent $50K on a proven, bulletproof platform that’s built to last. This 4Runner is more than just a vehicle; it's a reliable companion that will likely outlive me. Cheers!
I agree this vehicle will last a long time. I'm just saying it's not for everyone. There's more to vehicle ownership than a truck lasting forever. Believe it or not a lot of people don't care as they may only keep their cars for a few years. Thanks for checking out the video.
I just bought my 5th gen 4runner! The many videos of the 4runners don’t do any justice until you actually go to a dealership and test drive one. The tech is outdated but it does the job. Fuel economy is not great but I rather pay at the pump than have to visit my dealership for mechanical issues. The engine is the best part of this vehicle! The old school V6 is so smooth and reliable. I cant say anything about the new turbo engines of the new SUV but i would say newer things tend to be bugged and need rework throughout its first few years of release. Resale value of these 5th gen are insane! Good vid tho!
When you say that you can get a Jeep or a Bronco with "more modern tech," what are you actually referring to? The head unit screen size? Or actual technology? The 4Runner comes standard with adaptive radar cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, & automatic emergency braking. The Jeep & the Bronco do not have any of that as standard. The 4Runner also offers parking sonar & remote start, two technology-based features that you (oddly) stated that it doesn't have. I'll also add that I do not own or drive a 4Runner. Just prefer a little more objectivity in reviews.
Thanks for pointing out a few errors in my video. I pinned a comment advising that I made some mistakes. With regards to the tech, I found the infotainment horrible and not user friendly, the screen was small and the resolution was bad. It has lane departure warning, but not lane centering. Thanks for checking out the video.
@@georgeoncars663 SR5 have a low grade infotainment system, go to higher trim levels Mr Peanut & you get it all. I own one for the durability & re-sale value. I keep my vehicles (only own Toyota) & they hold their value.
The reality is most people who buy this truck won't use any of its offroad capability. It's just a fact. And if you want a good offroad truck there's better choices IMO. Thanks for checking out the video.
I find the infotainment to be perfect. Cameras are low resolution, but perfectly usable. Don't like automatic cargo gates. Open and close too slowly. Rarely it would be nice to have a hands free operation, but at the cost of slow action every time ? No. Engine is plenty powerful. Get 23+ mpg highway. City is about 17. I doubt all of your statements regarding gen 6. Weaker engine that is propped up with turbos and hybrids. Statistically less reliability. Worse backseat space Worse cargo space. Larger dimensions dispite loss of space. Infotainment is subjective. Style is subjective. Mpg won't be much better. This is already a knowable fact because the new tacoma got hardly any gains with the same drivetrain. Same with the land cruiser. Expect 2 to 3 mpg improvement at best at the cost of a drastically more complex drivetrain. That's not a gain. People should keep cars as long as possible. The reason they don't is because reliability of modern vehicles is trash. The 5th gen 4runner allows the opportunity to keep a vehicle for a long time, making it perhaps the best value on the market. No other vehicle will outlive a 4runner.
Thanks for the detailed write up and checking out the video. I don't necessarily agree with all of your points, but I appreciate and respect your feedback. Thanks again.
@@georgeoncars663 appreciate the response. Curious which parts you don't agree with as many of my statements are factual. Would love to hear your side.
The new tech is garbage. What do I need a larger touch screen for? Why would I need a better resolution back up camera? All I need is good enough. Generally, the less tech the better - far less to break.
5 speed transmissions are awesome! They dont break as much as the overly complicated garbage 8 speeds that are more complex and give minimal improvements in economy
You're right they are definatley durable and will last. It would just be nice to have a couple more gears and keep that level of durability. Thanks for checking out the video.
LOL….blah, blah, blah. This video is/was pointless. People who own or are in the market for a fifth Gen 4Runner know they are getting a proven vehicle with long term reliability and capability. It’s not bought to win races or to be overly techy. It’s has plenty of power to get the job done, holds its value better than any other vehicle in its class. Look at the used price for a 4Runner against any of its competitors and you’ll see. Vehicles with the new turbos are five year throw away / trade in’s. The fifth Gen 4Runner is a long term investment. And it has consistently demonstrated that throughout its history.
The only point I might disagree with you on people who shop for a 4Runner know what they're getting. Most people don't take these offroad or utilize what they can do. If all you're doing is running to the mall I think you'd be better off in a highlander. Just my opinion. Thanks for checking out the video.
@@georgeoncars663You clearly don’t get it. People who own a 4Runner have done their research and know what they’re getting. People who want a soccer mom vehicle will go with a Highlander or something in that class. People who want old school reliability, simple functionality and utilitarian features with tons of options for aftermarket mods will go with the 4Runner. Regardless of where they drive it. That’s why it’s one of the most successful and desired vehicles over the last fourteen years. That’s why Toyota hasn’t made any drastic changes to it. If it ain’t broke. Don’t fix it. The 4Runners V6 and transmission will still last longer with far less maintenance and repair costs than most of the newer engines and drivetrains from the brands you mentioned. The 4Runner has consistently proven that time and time again. Enjoy your Highlander. To each their own.
@@pewterngold I dig it because it's still made in Japan. Remember when only Japanese cars lasted longer. American made was a drawback in the 70s and 80s. I don't think this generation remembers
I wholeheartedly disagree with your comment that Highlander is better than the Runner. Highlander is not built in Japan. A Runner will outlast the Highlander by a decade.
@@georgeoncars663The reliability of the Runner will outweigh the needs…if that makes sense at all…basically, you cannot afford to go cheap when you buy a Toyota…if any doubt go with Made in Japan….it’s a safer bet although the mpg is not drastic difference between the two.
@@Thankyou_3 you’re not wrong that the 4Runner will outlast a highlander, but what you do with your vehicle could determine which vehicle would be best for you. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍
#1 The radio and backup camera can be upgraded at a fraction of the cost of buying a new model. #2 That old V6 will go forever unlike this new turbo junk that has to be replaced at 150,000 miles or so and that it is highly likely the new 4 turbos will not last as long. #3 You don't buy a SUV for MPG, if you want MPG buy a car. #4 Ford and Jeep are piles of Junk and this is the direction toyota is now going with the tundra, tacoma and soon 4runner.
I love the look of the 4Runner, I’m ok with the tech as long as there is apple carplay, the backup camera resolution doesn’t matter and don’t care for back up sensors. I do wish it had a bit more power and better fuel economy other than that I’m good with everything. Much better than any Kia or ford out there in its price range. Will also hold its value better than any of the other vehicles you mentioned
While I appreciate the video, the Toyota 4runner is one of the longest lasting vehicles today. The tech that the 4runner comes with is easily upgradable with a new headunit and idata pro. The mpg while not stealer still runs a little over the stated 16/19 as long as you are not modding it out. Here's the thing about 4runners, people still stand in line to purchase one because they're not buying tech, they're not buying MPG's, they're buying reliability. The top 3 sold 4runner trims are the Limited, TRD Off-Road, and TRD PRO. People want the 4runner for its all-wheel drive, and 4 wheel drive capabilities because that was the purpose of the Toyota 4runner.

Troll level : Epic. Rant : Incoming. You know darn well that the people that buy these things keep them forever ,thats why the resale prices are so good. I'm so sick of hearing automotive journalists complaining about this 5 speed transmission I could scream. Go buy something else if you want good gas mileage. I plan on keeping my 4runner forever. It does everything i want it to do. It is quiet, comfy, and very confidence inspiring. For a offroad truck, that you can take anywhere. Fuck that curb . And that pothole. And those dilapidated railroad tracks too. I'll hit all that shit at the speed limit in my trd pro and it just soaks it right up. As our infrastructure continues to collapse it is very nice to have a truck that you can hit a 2 foot deep hidden pot hole and bounce right through it unscathed. The car behind me got taken out by that hole btw, in 30°freezing rain, in downtown Atlanta. The horror. Toyota is stupid if they stop making the 5th generation 4runner imo. The only updates I have heard any real consumer desire for is either a diesel or a v8, but honestly I love the 4.0 and they should never ever stop making it. I hate screens. The 5th gen is adequate for doing anything I've ever needed it to do. I've helped everyone in my family move with it more than once and it's practically a boxcar. Hook up to the big uhaul and ride out with confidence. What more do you want ? Out of your light duty truck ? More gears in the transmission? There are 20 years worth of these 5 speed transmissions and every shop knows how to work on them, now , do you really want to trade the piece of mind that gives for 8 to 10 percent improved mpg ? The apocalypse is nigh , and I'm glad I've got a 5th generation 4runner it'll be the last car i ever own. Yes it is too expensive, but you can blame that squarely on the chicken tax and the feckless domestic manufacturers that are nothing more than predatory financial institutions that just so happen to make cars as part of their scam. Ronald Reagan you deranged fiend we're all screwed now thanks to you. Although Clinton certainly helped too. What ever happened to the old 300 straight 6 ? Or the 7.3 ? Or the 5.9 ? Better is a relative term, yeah all the new stuff is super capable, but no one can afford to fix it as it ages, so is it really better ? Only if you see a automobile as a fashion accessory, instead of a means of transportation. Something to be replaced every 3 to 5 years. Im not interested in that sort of thing. I got the badass one ,because I could afford to buy it at the time, and i figured get the best one, it'll be shitty enough, and i regret nothing after 70k miles. 10/10 highly recommend. I'm never getting rid of my 4runner. Jeep ? Bronco ? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. no. I'll be in the million mile club one day. Unless Toyota brings over the 70 series... Which they never will smh. The 5th generation 4runner is not perfect, but it is perfect for me. And many other folks feel the exact same way. Why fix what isn't broken? Its not efficient, or fast, or flashy, or super tech focused, and that is exactly what 4runner folks crave. A good old truck.

@@DavidWX877 exactly literally the only thing they have that is nice is the screen. Other than that all the materials/plastics are trash. They are pumping more HP into smaller engines so that can’t be good. I like to call them fisher price vehicles.
Scared to update? mmmm sure. I'm taking delivery of my new 24 TRD ORP next week. Your Ford Edge will never make it to where I off-road but most people don't need that capability but the 4Runner has always been based on using them off-road even if people didn't use it for this reason. I traded in my 2020 4Runner for my Bronco and have zero regrets. Outside of the reliability the 4Runner was just not a great suv. The joke about gas mileage of a V8, power of a 4cyl was the absolute truth. I live in the mountains where it snows alot so that is why I bought a 4Runner. But it is not a great handling snow car and it has no 4A mode for mixed conditions. Dry pavement... slow down and shift the transfer case. Snow/ice same thing. No big deal if you are up in the snow on vacation. Live it and commute in it and the process gets old fast. Mine was a loaded TRD Offroad Premium with every bell and whistle, one step below a TRD Pro so I wasn't missing something that would have mad it better. It is ok offroad but it is no Jeep or Bronco. I sold it because it was always searching for gears in the mountains with that reliable but otherwise crappy 5 spd transmission. Couldn't pass anyone. Sucked gas. The displays were like a nintendo game boy. The so called adaptive cruise control was archaic. The ergonomics were so awful I would squirm around trying to get comfortable in my seat after 30 mins. Long road trips were hell. Finally it had no fun factor, simply blah to drive. While I wish my Bronco had the reliability reputation of a Toyota, mine has been flawless through 40k miles and it drives better on the highway, is safer in the snow, takes me up the Rubicon trail stock (forget about that in a stock 4Runner), and puts a smile on my face to get in and drive. It is fun. I will say I'm intrigued by the new Landcruiser. Nothing against Toyota but the new 4Runners are fugly and the old ones were not great except for reliability.

Thanks for taking the time to write some good feedback and for checking out the video. Enjoy the Gen 5.
New 2025 4runner will have a turbo. That's all I needed to know to avoid it. I'll be getting a 2024 4runner. Coming from a 2003 Highlander, I will appreciate the lack of an automobile fitted with the newest tech. I want a vehicle that will last a long time.
It will definitely last a long time. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍
@@BobsTank you’ve got a point there. Turbos put more stress on an engine. Thanks for checking out the video.
I got a 5th gen just because of its capability to handle off-road that about it everything else don't matter.
It's definatley capable off road. Thanks for checking out the video.
Cheers!
I wonder if the 6th gen will have the same cardboard wheel liners that are on the new 250 Land Cruiser? If that is progress, go for it, George.
I don't disagree the truck will last forever. Thanks for checking out the video.
Can you name one vehicle brand that will last over 250K miles without the repairs bills burden. Please just one of current models
I agree this vehicle will last a long time. I'm just saying it's not for everyone. There's more to vehicle ownership than a truck lasting forever. Believe it or not a lot of people don't care as they may only keep their cars for a few years. Thanks for checking out the video.
Not a Ford thats for sure. Fix Or Repair Daily
@@SLuWizzle thanks for checking out the video. If you want a vehicle that’s going to last forever, the 4Runner is it. 👍
Every one of your “perceived” negatives are all absolute positives for me.
More tech more problems.
Dainty little dials < Manly mechanical levers.
Very true. More tech can mean more problems 👍
Worse backseat space
Worse cargo space.
