What are your thoughts on playing at level zero to explore a characters background? Have you ever done anything similar?
Yes, I do that when I play Dungeon Crawl Classics from Goodman Games. It's a pretty great game. Speaking of great, it would sure be swell if WOTC released the 3.5SRD under creative commons, like right now. It's fine if the others take some time, but the 3.5 is needed for you to make amends.
I’ve done it a few times. My favorite time doing it was recently using custom backgrounds. We knew we were going to do a lvl 15 campaign…. Old friends and rivals being brought together to close a gate to the 9 hells. My character at lvl 0 essentially is an outlander with haunted features. Not really and edge lord…. More puckish because he was raised in a ranger conclave as the son of the conclave artificer. At lvl 15 he is a lvl 5 artificer/lvl 10 rogue and really fun to play. Sub classes: battle smith and phantom. He does magical tattoos for a living for a traveling circus at the start of the main campaign.
We did the level 0 to lvl 1, then a lvl 5 catch up adventure together to establish further back story and the parting of ways since childhood was over kind of thing (my character left to join a traveling circus and see the world), then a lvl 10 follow up where some of us didn’t show off any interesting subclass feats to give away the full concept of the characters (My character came back to the fiefdom for a funeral that lead to a misadventure and the development of a rivalry with another PC…. A fun rivalry…. The other PC is a monk/rogue dual class). We start the lvl 15 campaign in two weeks, it’s going to be fun.
Actually yeah, back in D&D 3.5 we'd pick an npc statblock (baker, banker, farmer, chef, etc) and play a few simple games at "Level 0".
I love that the Wild Beyond The Witchlight module has the adventure start of option of beginning the campaign as children. I’ve been playing a campaign that started that way with us as kiddoes. And then continued on after the module ended into a homebrew in space using the hag’s enchanted dollhouse as a spaceship. Started as a lvl 0 kiddo and now a lvl 13 seasoned adventurer. It’s delightful if you can.
I have an assassin campaign that starts them as members of a child street gang before recruitment. Super fun and endearing.
I love character sheet explorations. I love them so much. And Suvi has already ridiculously captured my heart. On top of that, I’m rapidly growing obsessed with this roleplay- and choice-based character creation system and hope to either use or be part of a game that uses aspects of it in the future.
This was a very moving story, of a character who can follow the legacy made for her or choose her own path
I wish I could play D&D with these people they are so cool.
So it seems like Suvi is an extension of the ideas of legacy behind Antopie in the 7 and I'm excited to see Them Explore that indepth
Excited for this whole series and can't wait for Cram Daniel
... Is she going mfing *Scribes wizard?* Please please please?
On Tumblr she said she was making a Scribes wizard, but by now (IDK if you've been watching the show and the Patreon fireside chats) they have settled on a homebrewed Wizard subclass, Wizard of the Citadel, which is kinda like the Battle Master subclass but for Wizards with "secrets" derived from Sagecraft that augment how your spellcasting works for a certain amount of casts before you regen them on short rest. It's not out yet but I want it REAL BAD.
ive wanted to name a cat “suvi” after the volcano vesuvius for so long!! i love the name 😭 (idk what aabriyas inspo was though)
The children's adventure is so good! I feel bad for anyone who doesn't get to experience it. So good!
Very cool idea!
Wish there was lvl 0 character sheets
Wonderful bufet of favourite character ♡♡♡
Sarah is a great host! Great to see them flexing and growing out from just the DnD Tiktok world.
We agree! We're so glad to have them on the team; look out for a lot more from Sarah!
@@DnDBeyond Yay!😁
If you want to play a level 0 character, that is how Dungeon Crawl Classics characters start.
DCC Level Zero funels are the best Level 0 RPG experience you can get 🎉
Dcc is sooooo good. We had 20 characters at the start and 5 mintues in we lost 11 of them because of one person trying to climb an unstable rock pile. They failed to not cause a rock slide.
I love thé meat grinder funnel and after listening tk this, having a less violent way to develop characters as level 0 is an interesting idea.
@@CaseyWilkesmusic yeah what they did for the children's campaign is the exact polar opposite of DCC level 0 funnel
Aabriya: they can't out-chaos you....
Aimee Carrero: hold my beer!
I am putting in an application for Aabria's sneaky link.
Where and when can I see this?!
s,dkjsdbfkjrt!! SARAHISCOFFEE?!?
When Did You Start Working For D&D Beyond??!!
where can we watch the character and game
The main campaign is being released on all podcast platforms for free! The level 0 Children's Campaign is only for Patreon subscribers of Worlds Beyond Number but well well worth it
my god those are high stats for level 1
Where can I watch this?
This was a Twitch stream! www.twitch.tv/dndbeyond
@@Rictavio27 Thanks!
Having listened to the first five episodes of the children's adventure today, their Patreon is *so* worth it. I just want this to be the campaign.
SSSSAAARRRAAAHHHHH
man....i thought "Ren" was spelt with a "W" this ENTIRE time.
I thought level 0 was before you've even chosen a class... so you wouldn't be able to have a level 0 wizard? I mean her character sheet even says level 1.
You can't create a level 0 character on D&D Beyond but also, if I understood correctly, the sheet isn't for the character at level 0
the sheet was for the children's campaign! the choices made in the children's campaign informed the level one characters :)
😅😶🌫️✨
😂
I do not understand the purpose of having backstories as a level 1 starting character, mainly because they do not GIVE anything mechanically to the character. This was a debate I got into with another player.
For example; You make a 53 tear old Human Soldier Captain. Your backstory goes deep into how you commanded a platoon and took out numerous monstrous threats. Now, let's play! You get hit 2 attacks from goblins and die? Because you only have 12 hp lol.
Or are we expected to make backstories which fit a weak level 1 character every time?
What are your thoughts?
I have an 80 year old Granny who is the camp cook. She just made 3rd level. The call to adventure comes at different times.
Creating your backstory is it own minigame.
Creating your backstory helps the DM with plot hooks.
Or backstory is just fluffy with not dicey stuffy.
I like the thought with older characters, that they were arguably higher level earlier on and time/retirement brought them down, and then adventuring again is them getting back into shape.
There was also the point brought up in A Crown of Candy, in that particularly with soldiers, how much fighting are you actually doing as an individual in an army, and yes, you might have led people, but that doesn't necessarily mean you were getting smacked around one on one a lot
The trick is not to make your character's backstory go against the mechanics. If you are playing a level 1 Fighter, then it might be better not to make a experienced war veteran who destroyed countless monsters. Make him someone who has been retired for a while, or someone who just got out of training, etc. I think backstories, while not entirely necessary depending on the game, are one of the best ways to create immersion, motivations and even whole arcs regardless of what level you are playing in.
A backstory gives a player one thing and one thing only, but it's essential to an interactive story:
Emotional investment.
It's not impossible to play D&D without it, nor is it impossible that a character simply discovers who they are in the first few level 1 sessions. But if you want players who are invested fast and deep, asking them who they are, how they became that person, and what they want, is a quick way to get there.
There's a reason, five editions and 40 years later, why Fifth Edition D&D has a whole section of character creation related to aiding even the most rookie and non-story-inclined players in picking backstory elements from tables and stuff. It fills a need and serves a purpose.
@@brandoncarbaugh7994 well said!
"Worlds Beyond Number"? Really? I suppose it's just coincidence it's so similar to "Worlds Without Number"? What's next, "Dungeons World"?
I was excited when I thought it was about the Kevin Crawford game... But nah just a deceptively similar name
Hrmm. That's not level 0 play. That's a back story with extra steps. If you want to know what level 0 play is, check out Dungeon Crawl Classics. It's where every player rolls 3-4 random weaklings and runs them through a meat grinder of a dungeon where you hope to god at least one of them survives. If they do, they advance to level one.
No shame on this style of play. Level 0 play has just been around for generations already, and it's not this.
To be fair, it is a style of level 0 play. They were practically at the DCC level of level 0 play, (same hit points very squishy) though they gained a lot of skills that DCC didn’t have, and only rolled 2d6 for stats and gained the 3rd d6 later. Only it seems more narrative focused than the bonkers and fun DCC style of meat grinding fun
