What were your favorite moments in Calamity? Check out Laerryn's character sheet on D&D Beyond: dndbeyond.link/yt_Calamity_AabriaSheet
Favorite moment? "This bag keep arguing with me. Can you...destroy?" had me in stitches. Still does.
Shout out to Aabria for being present in the moment and asking the best question of the campaign. "Did you bring a plus one?" gave birth to Bolo.
Ummm… I’m keen to check the sheet, but it’s giving an error… a fun rolled 1 error but error still.
Basically any moment when Lou Wilson talked, but especially "IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!!"
@@IndomitableAde Dude, for real. Aabria's followup questions and commitment to the bit accounted for SO much of the good content in this series. I mean, we only got the Quay/Laerynn romance because Sam said "I might wanna play a divorced couple" and Aabria immediately went _"I'M IN."_ She's a beast. 😤
@@Drekromancer she and Sam were exceptionally good together in a campaign where everyone brought their A game. I thoroughly enjoyed Calamity and thanks to Flando's time stamps I can rewatch my favorite moments.
"These are the wizards that are at Gatsby's party" is SUCH an excellent way to describe Laerryn and Patia my gosh
Yesssss! I was like "wait.... Omg that's great!"
Calamity E1: _"Haha, Sam Riegel made his character an asshole ex-husband to troll Aabria!"_
Calamity E4: _"This is the best in-game romance I've ever seen."_ 🥺😭❤️
Hearing that Laerynn got her trademark Arcane Ward spam by making a protection deal with Loquacious' patron got me fucked up ALL over again. Their relationship looked like a joke at the beginning of the campaign, but it was soooo heartwrenching by the end. ❤️
That’s totally sams style lol
Make something light, shallow and funny. Then bring emotional ruin
@@MAORIguy25 _So_ true. Ruin is precisely the right word.
@@MAORIguy25 the entire cast have multiple stupidly impactful emotional beats throughout Crit Role's history, but I stand by Sam having the dark horse arcs for his characters just because of how often he gets the big laughs in. you end up forgetting that he's playing some really sad tragic character in between ad reads and butt jokes
It felt to me that Aabria felt Laerryn as a fully realized person before she ever spoke. I’m so glad we’re getting this tour.
My favorite part of EXU Calamity was the union of the Hype Court, Aabria and Travis. Both were so hype any time any other player did dope stuff.
It's the ADHD enthusiasm and I'm LIVING for it lol
My favourite solo (duet technically with Brennan) scenes were Luis/Zerxus only because of how much Lou, Aabryia, and Travis would lose their goddamn minds.
@@ashleyhoughton8592 yess this 🙌. I get distracted watching Travis during the main campaign instead of watching the actually players RPing
I had no idea Aabria has ADHD, and I got really excited when I found out because I also have ADHD and I forget things all the time when I play D&D. The flowchart idea is super interesting and I'll try it out!
Same! I’ve never thought of using a flow chart! In my last campaign I had Guidance but never used it because I kept forgetting that I had it. (I was a ranger with magic initiate so it was added on later).
Same! Also holy shit. She managed all her abilities so smoothly during the campaign, I never would have guessed it was hard. Looks like that system really worked for her!
same! I gotta check out the flow charts
I also have ADHD, and Aabria having it is the least surprising thing in the world to me
Same!
I truly adore her, she’s such a fantastic player and fun DM, loved watching her with Critical Role in the Calamity series!
@ 55:15 of Battle for Beyond ep. 3 Aabria says "I'm going to blight that fucking tree" and if it's not the wildest coincidence ever then it's the greatest bit of foreshadowing that ever went over everybody's head
I watched Battle for Beyond between ep 3 and 4 of Calamity. When I heard that line I was like "What does she have against trees? 😂"
_"If I had a nickel for every time that woman destroyed a cosmically important tree, then I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice."_
blight mommy aabria
Aabria Iyengar is such an intelligent, empathetic, quick-witted, funny, inspiring and all-round beautiful human being. She brings soooooo much to the table every single time and is an absolute joy to watch her boundless enthusiasm and creativity. Much love from the UK ❤❤❤
In all honesty, one of my favorite moments of Laerryn from a mechanical standpoint was when Aabria said "I continuously cast mage armor to re-up my arcane ward."
I hope they do this for all of the EXU Calamity characters!
Saaame!
An absolute tank of a wizard. Incredible character play from Aabria throughout the whole game
I really love Aabria, both as a Dm a and as a player. As someone who has watched her a lot since seeing her on critical role and dimension 20, the thing that I love the most is that her games always seem fun, like she really seems to care about ensuring that her players are having a good time and I genuinely appreciate that. I honestly forgot how much I loved Exandria Unlimited when I first watched it, like it’s insane to me how good Aabria was at playing one of the most popular characters on critical role, she doesn’t get enough praise for that.
The fact that the chat were hating on her and pissed off at her, for the choices she was making as her character. And how she was so engrossed in her work not giving a shit. Just shows how Abria is an amazing role-player. It even reached to the point were people were having to tell the chat to calm down and be respectful with commenting because there were being hella rude about it. And reminding them that these were pre-recorded and they weren't going to see them anyway. My respects to her and I hope to be good at role-playing like how she was. Job well done!
This is why I avoid Twitch chat like the plague. The same happened to Marisha through the first two campaigns for just playing her character.
Imagine getting mad when someone roleplays in a roleplaying game.
Yeah, imagine backseating someone how to roleplay *their* character in *their* roleplay campaign. As much as I love CR, some of their fans needs to chill and touch some grass, and thats real grass not RP grass, sometimes.
The best thing cr ever did was start streaming on RUclips where the chat is turned off, honestly it’s never worth it to watch with the chat.
@@Sashakawaiicat "Remember to join us on twitch to have the full experience with the chat!"
No, I do not want that experience. The CR fandom is a burning pit of toxicity and idiocy.
Had to come here to learn about the famous flowcharts and the mage armor spam, absolutely incredible stuff. Aabria is so dang cool!!!
Love this! Was fantastic to see what made the character tick, especially the Eldritch Adept synergy and the lore with it about protecting her hubby.
3:08 this is the point where I note that (spoilers below the cut)
While Laerryn did die, she only did so to GM fiat (namely to the giant explosion which also destroyed _the entire continent_ in the process) and got a sweet character moment bringing her arc full circle in the process. So I'm willing to call that as close to success as Laerryn could have gotten under the circumstances.
To be fair she also survived up to that point only due to GM fiat, as that PWK should have killed her on the spot.
that's weird to me that people are getting upset at her holding the line with Laerryn's choices. like, first of all, obviously a character's gotta have integrity. the whole point of the campaign, as it is described in the trailer, is they couldn't have known. and secondly, don't you want like more drama? like clearly this is THE CAMPAIGN and it was tense and tragic from first seconds, but like, gimme more.
This was my thing too. How can people be hating on Aabria for building a character with a tragic flaw? This campaign is about the pride before the fall of wizards that literally thought they were better than the gods! It had to be this way - and Aabria made it look damned good from start to finish.
They truly did not understand the premise of the campaign. It’s truly poor media comprehension.
Exactly! We knew this was going to happen! But it made the ending so much more beautiful and meaningful to see that switch, to see laerynn use the last of what she possibly could to ensure the possibility of a future. She both doomed the world and saved it, and Aabria killed that performance and did it all so well, she did everything so perfectly that you'd think the show was scripted. A+ performance!
Yeah... Imagine they all pulled back and became cautious, that would suck.
Brennan in an interview said that when she blighted the tree he felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders as a DM because she fully understood the brief and pushed the narrative to *exactly* where it should have gone.
Also she got more shade than Zerxus.....
The guy who *literally* fell hookline and sinker for the oldest trope in the book by trusting Asmodeus.
10:19 -- feats are the singularly greatest improvement that occurred in DnD, starting with 3.0, full-stop. So I totally agree. (I like the conceptual streamlining of them in 5E vs the piece-meal implementation in prior editions'/PF's rulesets because it's easier for new players to use/remember, and as 5E feats effectively represent 3-4 feats, grouped, vs 3.X/PF, in most cases, it's nice to have that for simplicity's sake.)
Calamity is perfect start to finish, but God I would kill for a Ring of Brass battle royale special. I don't even *like* battle royales but I need to know what those glorious assholes could really do in full pitched combat. We could theoretically have seen Laerryn go Otherworldly Guise/Steel Wind Strike with a giant *wrench* are you kidding me right now. Quay has Psychic Lance! CERRIT.
(Even better: scale the Crown Keepers up to level 14 and go EXU vs EXU. This is not *merely* because I want to see what Zerxus and Opal would make of each other, but that is a factor.)
Zerxus clears imho, warlocks have too steep of a dropoff after a certain level to be viable as a non-multiclass, whereas Zerxus would get full lv14 paladin of power stuff
@@candyh4284 oh, very probably. Tbqh I just think Aimee and Luis would just have the most fun in the world with those characters interacting.
My goal, as a middle school DM, is to have a vocabulary like Aabria. Words seem effortless with her.
Read, a lot. The trick to a good vocabulary is to expose yourself to a lot of words and different styles of expression.
"ShE's BaD oN pUrPoSe" explains SO MUCH about Laerynn.
So true. And it was fun the whole way through! I can't believe some people get pissed about this. The whole point of this campaign was to create tragically flawed characters.
Yeah I don't understand people's approach like....
"I would use all the meta-knowledge available to me going in to this scenario, to do everything I could possibly do to prevent the calamity that I, as a player, know is going to happen"
Rather than getting the actual memo which should be....
"The Calamity happened *because* of these people, I need to create a character who's flaws are so large that it makes them blind to the fact that they are walking towards world's end."
It's like some people can't comprehend that women aren't always sugar and spice and cupcakes
Yes, I DESPISED Laerryn more than any other villain in CR. It's good to know she was bad on purpose, becasue she was horrible xD
Wait! Did people not understand that?!
Her smile is infectious 😄 She seems like a really cool person, and the character concept was awesome! Thanks for the video!
I loved her as a DM. I had never seen her as a player before. Now, hearing the genuine enjoyment behind her character, it makes me A. want to play as a wizard and B. want to watch more content with her in it.
If you haven't already (one year later, lol) you should try Worlds Beyond Number! It's an independent actual play podcast she's doing with Brennan, Lou, and Erika Ishii, and it's really good!
Loved Laerryn, she was so fun for the calamity
laerryn was such a badass, glad we got a BTS
I absolutely love Laura Bailey and I’m sure she would have been fantastic as well in Calamity, but I can’t imagine it without Marisha/Patia!
I think the table we had was perfect, any other makeup wouldn't have had the same spark
Calamity will always be a masterpiece, but just imagine how Laura Bailey's presence would've elevated it even further ;-; If she'd been there as planned it would've been a perfect table for me, I'm sad that my favorite player wasn't able to be part of one of my favourite pieces of media of all time :'D
The autocaptions on this are priceless. "ab duration". "Age of Our Condom".
Made my Abjuration Wiz a Mark of Warding Dwarf that worked on security systems for the vaults House Kundarak installed. Upcasted Armor of Agathys stacked with Fire Shield and Arcane Ward was comical.
I used mark of warding for my currently short-lived life cleric (I might get to return to the character but I'm not currently in that campaign), and Mark of Warding on its own is just pretty awesome.
30 minutes of Joe and Aabria talking about Calamity? Yes, but more please
Aabria is a gift to the world
I love giving Fireball to my Sorcerers more than my Wizards just because Sorcerers have the best metamagic capabilities and I LOVE LOVE LOVE using metamagic to change the elemental damage type on it (and other big spells like cloudkill) from fire (or poison) to frost and lightning and such just to overcome resistances and play creatively (lightning ball against fully metal armored heavy opponents is great if you have a fun DM that uses common sense) while still keeping the effectiveness and damage of a fireball, its so wonderful
27:48 I had this Runechild Sorc (really more of a Clockwork Soul kind of guy, but he was built before I knew that was a thing) and Reverse Gravity is so up his alley there's a parking space, but the dang campaign fizzled out before I could get to that level! Miss you Nicolas.
"So up his alley there's a parking space" is a truly wonderful line and you are a hero for writing it.
@@kevinomalley1090 Got it from a _Warehouse 13_ episode of all places.
18:00 - The Abjuration 14 feature is actually Spell Resistance, which is advantage on saves against them, and resistance to damage from spells.
So yeah, huge, and a good mechanical reason not to multi-class Artificer, despite that making RP sense.
But separate from Improved Abjuration (proficient in dispel / counterspell rolls), that's level 10.
Just in case anyone's curious on the details of which feature was which Wizard level, not complaining, just adding a footnote.
BTW, being able to project your arcane ward to someone else comes at lvl6.
Being able to recharge the ward by casting abjuration wizard spells is a baseline part of the ward itself, so lvl3.
(Your first feat comes at lvl4, or from Variant Human, so that's the first time you can take Eldritch Adept for Mage Armor spam, which is a clever hack. 2 hp per added to the ward per action. And yeah, that's fully RAW, it works for any abjuration spell, so no need to argue about whether she's casting it as a wizard spell when learning it from a warlocky feat.)
I always looked at abjurers as a great class for anime fans. Barriers and negation type magic feels super compatible
God, I wish Calamity had been my introduction to Aabria. She's a fine DM, but her awesome personality shows through SO much more from the other side of the table. And now, after Calamity, I'm motivated to go back and watch all of her stuff in ExU and d20!
Joe is a great GM too. I love it when he was GMing Cortex Prime.
I would love to see this done for every one who played in EXU Calamaity? dont know if that is possible, but the 2 characters i was most interest in seeing the build for were Aabria's character Laerryn and Travis' character Cerrit
Oh gosh same. I also really want to see what Marisha was sitting on, because I feel like she went the absolute opposite route to making herself indestructible. Patia went into the Calamity on 86 hit points with mostly non-damage spells on deck and a high Charisma score that basically never came into play -- such a frigging counterintuitive legend move to approach this particular story like "literally why would everyone in this hypercivilized society be optimized for combat survival, I just want to do something cool before we all die anyway." Would totally not put it past Marisha to have built in some really fun out-of-combat options that were almost definitely never going to come up, just as commitment to the bit, and I really want to know how much of her early death contingency plan was built around that Ring of Mind Shielding.
(Also I *absolutely* want the specs on her orb. I feel like she and Brennan just went buck wild designing an absolutely busted magical item around the Encode Thoughts cantrip, and I love that.)
@@emthatyourefuse2494 the other person i have been thinking about is lou the last dragon of avalir wilson he was a pirate with a summonable pet. The more i re-watch bots and pieces thebmore i think they alllll home brewed the hell out of thier characters and i want more info on all of them
@@drakhoon Oh god yeah, that was the coolest thing ever. I also really wouldn't mind knowing some of the other ten highly entertaining ways to one-hit kill a man Sam probably built into Loquatious "heyyyy I'm just a little birthday boy" Seelie -- Psychic Lance is so good and SO nasty and I bet he had more where that came from. They all really went all out making this feel like the last stand of a party they'd been developing since Level 1, didn't they? (In terms of *synergy* possibly most of all -- that Reverse Gravity combo was such a masterclass in teamwork, you can actually believe these people made it to Level 14 without a full-time healer.)
@@emthatyourefuse2494 definitely and to be fair when i GM if some one isnt a dedicated healer that is what potions and home brew are there to help with :)
@@drakhoon Oh totally (and tbh I don't think anything is as tough as a situation like they had for Campaign 1, where for OOC reasons Vox Machina had a really great healer... *sometimes.* It takes a really ridiculously smart and flexible party to stay on top of that, especially since a couple of them really weren't built to shrug off damage.)
*Slurping sound* "I cast fireball..." *Crazed wizard laugh*
I am new to DnD and I learned the Variant Humans get a fest at the start. I like feats!!! I only make Variant Humans now.
You both are the best. Great content!
My favorite wizard I ever played was an abjurationist loxodon. With POINT BUY ALONE! I had high AC, high HP, and now I get a big thing of temp hp just using reaction shield to say “no u”.
The best part was I got to dump DEX to play up the bumbling scientist archetype.
Plz do this for every Calamity character
PLEASE release an example of your flow chart, Aabria!
Oh my days the content I didn’t even realise I needed
Loved this, thank you? 🤩
You’re very welcome!
I really loved Laerryn's flaws and the connection it has to the society of the Age of Arcanum at large, as well as Vespin Chloras. The whole thing with Vespin was that his sin was the greatest of his age... Pride, hubris, the thinking that you can do anything damn any consequences so long as it furthers your vision. Laerryn, Patia, Zerxus, and to some extent the others, they all embodied that as well. Patia with her superiority created by her grandfather and removing people's memories, Zerxus and his whole "but daddy I can fix him!" attitude towards betrayers, Laerryn decided that her ambitions were more important than anything else (even her marriage at one point). The path that they, Laerryn, Zerxus, and Vespin, all followed of I can be the one to do this absent of any consequences, and how that spelled each of their inevitable doom and the doom of their world as they knew it and they had no idea it would go so wrong until it was too late to undo it and could only mitigate the effects.
Like Brennan said at the end "Though Calamity is here, because of you, it will not be here forever." And it can be read either as Calamity being caused by them and it won't go on forever OR Calamity happening and because of their actions it will not go on forever. They both doomed the world and yet saved what they could to the max of their abilities. The duality of not being black and white characters, and still being able to, in the end, make the right choice to save what you can even at the cost of your own life. I loved them.
This was awesome! Can we get that kind of breakdown for all Calamity Characters please?
Aabria and one Mr. Joseph Starr? Awesome!
👻
Joseph.. Joe? Starr????
@@ashleyhoughton8592 HORRY SHIEEEET
26:20 Silvery Barbs -- yeah, it's very good and in fairness *should* be a 2nd level spell. (I play/run it as 1st, as-listed, but am thinking about homeruling it as 2nd.)
Was literally on the beyond app on my phone idly building a warlock and picking my first mystic arcanum... tasha's otherwordly guise. Just before they bring it up in the video
shoutout to the captions which translated Age of Arcanum to "age of our condom"
Aabria Iyengar is the ADHD representation we need!! Rock on, queen! ❤️
If D&D Beyond where to add a flow chart generator that would be really awesome and also a great help to new players.
I. LOVE. CHARACTER. SHEET. TOURS.

Holy shit I’m early af! Love you ABRIA!!!!!!!
Gotta love Aabria! Though, why is this tagged as League of Legends?
Cause she's a legend !! (yeah you're right should have been D&D)

My first character was a abjuration wizard too
loved her at D20!
Laerryn the Titan Slayer!
Jester voice: *_Technically_* she only sealed them away but still impressive *AF*
Hey, I was wondering how Aabria added a custom backdrop (background image) to her character sheet? She says around 30:47 that she added an image Brennan had used as a reference to describe the setting as her background. But as far as I can tell, that's not actually a feature?? :)
I don't know if the bigger D&D streamers have some extra features to further customize than we "mere mortals" have? :P
I think that background comes from an purchase add-on to Explorer's Guide to Wildemount in DnDBeyond. 3.99 dollos for 7 backgrounds.
She’s so cool
Good to see Joe, still miss him on Screen Junkies
The auto-captions for this are hilarious. Age of Arcanum becomes age of our condom.
no offense but I would die for Laerryn Coramar-Seelie
LMAO i wanted to learn about Laerryn used the Tough trait and its the one things they skipped over XD
Here for flow charts
Everything you *need* to know to watch EXU calamity.
Is that it is called 'calamity'.
(and if you missed that part, you'll realize soon enough... ...)
Did she dye her hair?? I noticed it was blue in the last episode but I figured that was like a temporary color with hair chalk or something!
Does anyone have the link of the tweet they talk about at around 20:00, where they talk about the flow chart?
❤️
this was cool
Wish I had a flow chart for MTG. Lots of my decks are cerebral and I forget things when I'm anxious
I wish she could have explained how she had so much damage resistances.
Level 14 subclass ability. Gives her resistance against spell damage, in tandem with advantage on saving throws caused by spells.
@@helencurtis3162 truly a brilliant choice for the Age of Arcanum, in a city full of mages. Seriously LCS is probably the tankiest possible wizard you can make and have your DM still allow it

@@the_purple_mage iirc, I believe you can get it with the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount digital book. I have that background and I'm pretty sure thats how I got it

Since WOtC bought DNDBeyond, will we see unearthed arcana options come back to character builder? 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Unlikely, Unearthed Arcana is not really playtest material anymore, its more "these are what will be coming out in future books but still need a few tweaks". Using resources to add UA content to the site only to have to change it later when it becomes official would be a waste of time that can be used to improve other areas of the site.
@@JustinTotino they still do that now though. Look at all the race re-writes they just did in the new book. Same principle overall. And just have a switch like they do for the critical role content.
@@justinbrayall7176 Those changes are part of an official book release though, different situation.
@@JustinTotino would unearthed arcana when it becomes official not be an official book release? Lol
@@justinbrayall7176 No, because the versions as they appear in UA may change by the time the book has published.
That's what happened with Strixhaven; the subclasses and how they worked in the UA were essentially scrapped and completely changed for the official release.
I wonder if Joe Starr is a JoJo fan.
I sure hope so.
Mace on a wizard that isnt proficient with maces...am i missing something? Also her eldritch invocation has not been chosen as part of eldritch adept. I assume it will be armor of shadows for free castings of mage armor for the arcane ward.
Why was her fireball listed as 9d6 at 3rd level?

My bladesinger wizard who doesn't know how to do fire because she studied magic in secret on a pirate ship and didn't want to risk blowing everything up: ...
goes to show druids arn't the only class that is over powerd
Sometimes D&D is over analysed.
Happy to hear she was this bad on purpose because I really despised Laerryn. The typical scientist that doesn't care the slightest about the possible consequences of their research, selfish and arrogant, a true villain. The only question is "can I", not "should I". I really was cheering for Vespin's PWK.
So you're just gonna spoil what happened in the story less than a month after it released in a thumbnail now, huh.
That isn't spoiler - that is information that was in the trailers for the show. AND very first minutes of the first episode Brennan spoke directly to the camera and promised a sad, tragic story of the very wizards who brought about the end of the world. Not spoiler in the least.
