Seigneurs, Sachiez - French Crusade Song

  • This one was written by King Theobald I "the Troubadour" of Navarre, also count of Champagne and the main organizer of the Barons' Crusade, which ended with the Kingdom of Jerusalem regaining its capital, Nazareth, Bethlehem and most of Galilee. He brought many souvenirs back to europe, including a rose he planted in his helmet and a piece of the True Cross.
This song is a rally not only to the crusades of old, but for those who are too afraid to defend their faith. Remember these men.
    Lyrics:
Or s'en iront cil vaillant bacheler
    et li morveux, li cendreux, demorront;

I know it uses the Navarrese flag yet I put it as a "French" song.
Thibaut was a frenchman, his court was french, that's why.
Also, if the translation isn't 10000000% literal, why does it matter? I don't speak french, but I can guarantee none of my translations from French so far are completely wrong, nor are the meanings lost

@Maxime Bariteau Probably because that version is more recent. I think if it was sang by a native Occitan or an old french true speaker, it would sounds different.

Me i'm french, i think translation is not perfect but not bad. It is old french, me i can understand with effort. And yeah King of France it's King of France and Navarra but after Henri IV, and it is crusade chant so very before henri IV
My english is not good but if you can understand is good

As a Québécois, this kind of french is very close to our way of speaking french (Quebec french). Except for a few words the rest of the song is pretty easy to understand. I know now where the sound "en" pronounced like "a-en" in "sagement or sagema-ent" (wisely) comes from. Our roots are deep, indeed!

The Navarese (Basques) were very influential in the Crusades! In Spain, during the Reconquista, they had the honor of being considered universal nobles because they were "Old Christians" meaning they have no Muslim or Jewish descent and their lineage was pure European and Christian. They really helped Spain in Reconquering territory away from the Moors. In the Middle East, they also restored the fallen Kingdom of Jerusalem. BTW, most of the Spanish Conquistadors which Christianized Muslim Philippines (Then under the Sultanate of Brunei) were Basque, like Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, an officer in Spanish-Mexico who organized the first successful expedition to the Philippines, his grandson the Basque descended and Mexico-born Juan de Salcedo succeeded in defeating the Muslim Kapampangan, Tariq Sulayman, who was a vassal of the Bruneian Sultan Saiful Rijal. Lol, he, Juan de Salcedo, was inspired because he was in love with the Princess of Tondo, princess Kandarapa. Tondo was the pre-eminent state in Luzon before the Bruneian Islamization.

Yes, over the years I've come to appreciate Quebecois a lot!
