    Arco was a division of Mattel. They made a lot of Barbie playsets and low-end houses and small action figure sets featuring Mickey Mouse and friends. I worked at TRU from 88 to 91 and during that time the store had 1 1/2 aisles devoted to Barbie with the other side of the half aisle being almost nothing but girls and pre-school Arco product. I believe Arco was what was known as a "letter of credit" business, they'd manufacture product for the big accounts on a letter of credit and the purchaser would accept the merchandise in China and have it shipped instead of Mattel bringing it here and warehousing it for distribution. (Hasbro had a letter of credit division called Kid Dimensions around the same time and that is basically how the GI Joe team described how the business worked.)

    Technically, Ron Lim’s cover for Silver Surfer #50 (“Deeply Buried Secrets”) shown at 4:27 was foil embossed. Chromium enhancement was less common and way more expensive. It’s usually associated with Valiant comics like Bloodshot #1 (“Blood of the Machine”), Turok: Dinosaur Hunter #1 (“Cold Blood Blazing”), and Ninjak #1 ("Black Water").
    I believe Superman #82 concluding the 'Reign of the Supermen' crossover is the only DC chromium cover published in the nineties. The most well-known Marvel chromium covers not counting reprints might be X-Men: Alpha #1 ("A Beginning"), Spider-Man Maximum Clonage: Omega #1 ("The End of the Beginning"), and 2099 A.D. Genesis #1 (“Mid Day Sun”).

    I love the Killer Clowns cotton candy pods. I had the movie Batmobile. Unfortunately, I sold it. it was fun though. I also had Joker and Batman from the first movie. 50 for that turbo cycle is really good for that. I had a few Secret Wars toys. I loved them especially Baron Zemo. Those carded turtles are priced pretty good. It's crazy how high valued they are. I had the April with the orange on it. I wish I had gone for the Star Brigade line. I also wish I begged my mom to get the Defiant Space Complex. I noticed the McDonald's Super Marion happy meal toys in the case. I had all of those.

    Many will disagree with me on this, but I feel that the 1990s was a dark, difficult time for comics. The stupid variant and foil covers, other gimmicks, Todd McFarlane and Rob Liefeld rising to prominence on awful art, the obnoxious "extreme" attitude going on during this era, etc.

    • @Dusty_B
      @Dusty_B 11 месяцев назад +1

      McFarlane as an awful artist? Really? I would’ve said you had a valid argument, but that ain’t it chief.

    • @KintounKal
      @KintounKal 11 месяцев назад

      I don't necessarily disagree. I remember reading a 1994 interview with Rob Liefeld published in Previews where he compared imprints to recipes. He described the Extreme Studios corner of Image comics as spicy chicken fajita while DEFIANT is more like filet mignon. That's a very apt description in my opinion.
      By the way, you might want to check out Youngblood: Bloodsport #1 from Arcade comics even if you hate Liefeld's style. It's written by Mark Millar and definitely the most audacious story ever told featuring Shaft & Badrock.
      Runs like Chris Claremont's Sovereign Seven #1-36, Steve Englehart's Strangers #1-24, Mike W. Barr's Mantra #1-24, Jim Shooter's Magnus, Robot Fighter #0-20 + Predator Versus Magnus, Robot Fighter #1-2, James Robinson’s Firearm #0-18 + Codename: Firearm #0-2, James Hudnall’s The Solution #0-17, Len Strazewski’s The Fly #1-17 + Annual #1, David Michelinie's H.A.R.D. Corps #1-16, Chris Ulm’s Rune #0-9 + Curse of Rune #1-4 + Rune/Silver Surfer #1 + Rune Vs. Venom #1, Gerard Jones’ Solitaire #1-12 and Steve Gerber's Sludge #1-11 + Red X-Mas #1 are often overlooked yet very memorable.
