  • Yingluck Shinawatra made history six years ago by becoming Thailand's first female prime minister.
Now she is a fugitive - just like her brother, Thaksin, who was also prime minister - and wanted for corruption at home.
Yingluck was supposed to be in the Supreme Court on Friday to hear the verdict after a two-year long trial.
She faces 10 years in prison if convicted.
Why is Yingluck, who comes from a political dynasty, so controversial in Thailand?
    Presenter: Adrian Finighan
    Guests:
Kasit Promya - Former Foreign Minister of Thailand
Verapat Pariyawong - Visiting scholar at SOAS University of London
Sean Boonpracong - Former National Security Adviser to Yingluck Shinawatra's government

How much harm could it possibly be overpaying the farmers ??? the money was not wasted it went to the people in the country who have little. Corruption charge just sounds so self serving when corruption is in everyday life in Thailand.

As a resident I have to say that something had to happen when the Red and Yellow Shirts were clashing in Bangkok bringing the City to a standstill. I firmly believe that if the Army hadn't stepped in then there could have been Civil War. HOWEVER, if elections are not held this year then the Junta will be held in contempt by the rest of the World. Now that Rama IX has died there is no longer a single person to rally the Nation. The new King obviously will never be given the same love , affection and trust which his Father enjoyed and had earned.

She was not bullied nor was she treated unfairly. The trial lasted for almost three years, and during that time she was given an opportunity to defend her case. The court gave her permission to bring in almost 20 witnesses to testify. She was not charged with corruption charge, but dereliction of duty. She was told about the irregularities that were widespread in the rice subsidy program, but she ignored it and did not heed what she was told. She gave the green light to the G to G rice selling deal with a company set up in Thailand by a Thai rice exporter and claimed it as an authorized Chinese government company. The rice was sold at a very low price, and the rice was not shipped to China but it was sold to rice companies in the country, and the people involved in the rice sale pocketed a lot of money from the deal. The minister was found guilty and faced 33 year jail term. Yingluck could not find the evidence to counter the allegation. She knew full well what was happening.
The rice pledging scheme is good if done honestly and cautiously. What happened was that the government spent a lot of the money on buying the rice, but could not sell the rice. It had to pay the rent for keeping the rice and for keeping the quality of the rice.--Guess who benefited from it?--The supporters (the rice mill operators, not the farmers) of her party. Besides she was said to let her relatives to buy rice at a cheaper price from neighboring countries and sold it to the Thai government. This the Thai farmer did not benefit. What pocketed the money?

If Yingluck Sinatra subsidized the rice farmers buying rice in 50% or double prices, why should be she convicted if she bought payoff properly not stealing money, she's done good job for the peoples of country, doing good job is sin, while doing buttering and oiling rich people is appreciating, all RUBBISH policy. From Bangladesh.

Why people here love our King. The last King take care people like his children. There is no country treated people like this. You can see Thai people respects the last King everyday since he passed away. Thailand is a good county but people is poor some areas. There are bad politicians paid their money for voting the election. It's a long story if you are Thai that you will know.

She doesn't have the gut to face verdict. The first guy could say that because he was her stooge. Yingluck was not charged with implementing the rice subsidy program, but she was charged with negligence by letting her cronies to funnel the cash from the program. The evidence is so clear that she could not deny it. No pro-ordained as the first man say. Her escape was indeed a collusion between the military and Yingluck--to relieve the tension within the country.

corruption is not new to Thailand and anywhere in the world...look at the Trump case in the USA and Korea and so on. Thailand is taking steps similar to S Korea to make examples of corrupt officials and Yingluck is definitely fit the bill. Thailand have this centralization development where the most educated and riches lives in Bangkok (capital city). The population in Bangkok is about 8 million people compare to the whole country of 70 million. Problem is, all politicians hope to win an election will have to win the votes from the provinces other than Bangkok where the population are higher. Thus, you get less educated, poor, and socialist-biased population voting and electing the PM of "Thailand". It is somewhat controversial because the economy of Thailand is driven by Bangkok (or the companies based in Bangkok) but the government tries to win votes vis rural supporting short-term policies (like giving away money) and sacrificing the economy of Thailand as a whole. This rice scheme as well. They guarantee farmers to buy all their rice at a high price... Ok now what do we do with surpluses now that farmers voted for us? How do we store all the rice that have expiry dates? Simple logic but wins the votes in the short run.

      What democratically elected government??
Winning an election by buying votes is not a democracy!
If you read the news, you would have heard of a shooting at a local college in Bangkok where the police supported the red in the fight against students.

Most of the villagers like her and her brother because they benefit from their policy, without thinking about bad consequences they have done to the country. Elected officials should be ousted if they are corrupt or are unable to perform the good job for the country. Populism can only cause hardship to the people in the long run and eventually will lead to the downfall of the country.

except.....that is democracy. It is the will of the majority of the people. The military over throwing a democratically elected leader......is itself a criminal act. Who elected the military?........no one. If the majority of Thai people thought she was a bad leader....then they could vote her out in the next election.
Again......a military coup of a democratically elected leader......is itself a criminal act.

That's the problem with democracy. What if the will of the people wants socialism? That would destroy the economy, democracy and way of life in Thailand. In the middle east, the will of the people wants a theocracy. That too would kill democracy.

Democracy may be good if voters are educated and informed. What would happen if vote-buying is rampant and the voters cast their votes just for small of money. If democracy is gained from vote-buying, would this reflect the genuine will of the people? Democracy cannot be applied in all countries. An appropriate form of government depends on the culture, faith, and the level of education of the people. When there are problems, especially those that lead the country on the brink of political turmoil or even civil war, the military is necessary to prevent the crises and to normalize the situation, thus the country can be brought back into a peaceful path. Ideally, it is right to wait until the time to vote. What if the situation is so critical and the time lapse would bring the country into further worse situation> In this instance, an action is needed to end the grave situation immediately. But this doesn't mean that the military is to remain forever. They must go immediately after the house-cleaning is done.
