  • Thaksin's Thailand (January 2001) - Thaksin Shinawtra telecommunications businessman is accused of corruption and vote-buying in an attempt to become the next Thai Prime Minister.
    Subscribe to Journeyman here: www.youtube.com...
    Thaksin's landslide victory in 2001's election followed a lavish campaign and proven vote-buying. In a secretly filmed conversation, we hear how villagers were offered money in exchange for their ID cards and signing up for Thaksin's new party. For months the richest man in Thailand waged a lavish campaign featuring fireworks and laser shows. We reveal a system of ingrained corruption where the media and the police are bought off. But with the stock market rallying, could Thaksin's financial acumen assure a turnaround in the Thai economy?

    While I am NO fan of Thaksin (corrupt- like most politicians in Thailand it seems-, he exacerbated the crisis in the South with the Muslims, the mass murder of the 'War on Drugs,' etc) he was the first ever prime minister to win an all out majority in 2005, and the first ever leader to implement policies aimed directly at helping the poor (e.g. universal healthcare, loans to villages, increasing access to upper secondary education, etc). Ever since the coup in 2006 with the ousting of Thaksin, and the subsequent coup in 2014 ousting his sister, Thailand is now in a dire situation and democracy has been set back many years! Thailand under the current junta is no solution for my dearly loved country...

    • @jamescolyn5960

      Agree. It's hard to listen, and in fact, irritating.
      The loud background music and the other overly loud background noise indicates some rather shoddy production.
      It seems as if they tried to make it "realistic" by including all that music and noise. But it defeats the purpose, since it just makes it impossible to understand much that the narrator says.
      I've listened on speaker, on headphones, and on earphones, and nothing helps.
      Oh, and one more thing. Thaksin and his sister are now where they belong. In exile.

    This documentary gives a comprehensive account of his crimes - but what of his opponents? The politics of Thailand is not a battle of good vs evil, rich vs poor. It is the corrupt vs the more-corrupt. Protesting on the streets will remove Thaksin's influence but it will not solve any of our problems nor bring peace to our country. Red and Yellow needs to negotiate law changes and constitution amendments and re-elect as soon as possible.

      Thaksin made 2 billion dollars, he is a successful businessman. That's exactly the type of leader you want if you want to grow an economy and become a wealthy country.
      Or you could go with some violent socialist hipster that promise everything but never delivers...

    • @GravelGrunt
      @GravelGrunt 10 лет назад

      Thaksin made billions thanks to his political connections. When you have a monopoly on the mobile phone system, which he did when it came it, it's hard not to make billions. As PM he used his position to increase his own wealth, not the country's.

    • @slimturnpike
      @slimturnpike 8 лет назад

      +Mikael Hansson He failed at every business he ever attempted until he wrangled a monopoly on telecom back when Samak was minister of communications. Samak was legally bound to take bids from all sources, but suddenly and unilaterally announced bids were no longer necessary. Thaksin got the contract and started raking in the cash that enabled him to buy votes and influence. Once he was in powered he changed capital gains tax laws so that he wouldn't have to pay anything on the sale of his telecom business to Singaporean interests. That was when the people had had enough of such massive in-your-face manipulation was the last straw for the real powers behind the system. After he was exiled, his party made sure Samak was rewarded with the position of prime minister. It was nothing but a series of cynical transactions.

      Anne, I see it as more of a classic socio-economic analysis from a Marxist perspective - and, given the source, that is no surprise. Am well aware that Mr. Thaksin arouses strong feelings, but so do opposition leaders AV and Suthep. So, putting them aside,what is going on in Thailand? Do you think democracy is essential for a modern country in the world today, and, if so, how should that democracy function in Thailand? I think you would agree that the current conflict is very bad for the country, and all I am hoping for is a peaceful conflict resolution such as I used to help negotiate for the UN in Africa and East Timor. But who can mediate in Thailand today? Any thoughts??

    Many times, democratically elected Prime Minister was toppled illegally by military forces. Later on, legitimacy of the nation then was subjected to amendment in fond of winner's desires rather than fairness to all people. Sometimes, newly written law can perform retroactively to the persons whom should be eliminated from political system for real authorities that even gave an order to army chief to do what they want. Thailand is right now being trapped with hatre.Note: please consider why everytime coup d'etat is conducted ,after that constitutional law then will proceed to have the new one that certainly is written by pro-coup academics or soldiers.Ridiculously, sometimes, many people who claim their divine goodness for their own. aligned themselves as self-centred. They even don't know what problems are for people who live in rural area. Basically, in reality, problems for rural people should be left behind and this current social status of him/ her might maintain in their imagination. This is the way to take advantages from the poor easily.

    How long did it take the European nations to go from an absolute monarchy to democracy in England's case about three hundred years and we are still not a true democracy nobody votes for the members of the house of lords . Political corruption is rife in the western world , how about Russia, India . Not condoning the Thai system and military intervention never looks appealing but how bad is Thailand compared to the rest of the world ?
