Being clear to side with the former would make the US lose Taiwan, a strategic partner to counter a potentially adversarial China in the future (looking from that point of time). Siding with the latter was dumb (it was just a small nation) and would make China invade the island, something that the US no longer had the stomach for since it would make the region at war where the US would need to participate to defend Taiwan.
Like Kissinger mentioned, this strategic ambiguity wouldn't last forever. Unfortunately he also didn't know what to do when the China-Taiwan status quo can longer be maintained.
