Today we are looking at an interesting release from Maven Watches.

This piece is outwith the norm as it attempts straddle two distinct watch styles:
The Field Watch
...and the Bauhaus Watch
The field watch is usually reserved for the outdoorsman, someone who does tough stuff outside in all sorts of conditions wheres the Bauhaus style is usually to be found on the wrist of an architect or an office worker.
Can you mix a field watch and a Bauhaus watch?
I suppose you can if you manufacture something called the Urban Scout.
It is the correct size at 38mm in diameter but is it one of the best field watches you can buy...for an office environment?

With the clean dial and the lines and trianlges used on the watch face. The double digit numbers and the minimalist brand design I say again this looks like a watch designed by a draftsman or an architect. It's an absolutlely beautiful watch and I love that domed crystal. Excellent review John, this is a beautiful watch!

Well done Maven. Brilliant watch. This is hands down my first choice for a Bauhaus Design or even for a simple everyday wear type of watch. It definitely looks the business with the leather, and I think it might look good with a thin Milanese strap as well. Thanks for the great review as always. Great find John, I like this one, the dial and handset look very good. The hands are nice lengths, you are right the lugs are flat, but those elastic straps always lift the watch and emphasise the lugs. It looked much better on your leather strap. I could be tempted by a slimmer quartz one if it had similar case and crystal design.
They do the quartz in a similar design in 34mm and 40mm 😊
Love the dial, but I'm not so sure about the case. I'm not sure why they didn't do something similar to the quartz model. 🤷🏻♂️ Great review brother!

Not bad John, lost me at push pull crown, maybe looks a bit thick but I'm liking the look.
I kinda like this watch, the minimalist field watch with a clean but practical design just works for me. This would make a nice alternative to the higher end Timex watches or a Bertucci. Nice to see watch reviews which are not the usual Dive or dress orientated. Design is stylish but understated perfect for a smart casual affair where you don't want to be seen trying too hard with the watch choice..good one!

That's a great looking watch and as you've shown surprisingly versatile on different straps. Great watch for casual but stylish attire. I'm torn on the strap decision though, it looks good on all of them. I'm surprised how much I like this watch as not my style, only reservation is legibility, but you don't buy this style of watch for that. Cheers John.

Nice one. I'm very happy to see you doing watches outside of Ali, since I'm now officially boycotting Ali after their so called customer support screwed me over and made me lose about 400 USD in packages that got lost in transit. 🤬

After dealing with my local transporter support and Ali support for more than a week, it's clear to me that the Ali support knows nothing about international trade rules and obligations. If your concern is beyond seeking refund for an order that they can check within the Ali app, you are basically screwed. When they admitted in chat with me that they will not contact my local transporter to make a complaint about seven missing tracking numbers, i finally gave up. Because that is exactly what they as a seller must to for my local transporter to start an investigation about what happened to my orders that got lost.
In my case Ali support advised me start refund claims for all the missing goods, which they then turned down, due to lack of evidence within their app. And then they dismissed my appeals for the same refund cases. In the process all orders went to finished status, without the goods being one single bit closer to me. So now I lost both the goods the chance to get refund by Ali support incompetence. Hence I'm boycotting Ali from now on 😈
If you used PayPal you are still covered...then card issuer if need be. They have to prove they delivered...
@@johnswatchjoint Ok, good idea I will see if I have some protection through my Mastercard. I stopped using Paypal on Ali last autumn because I got so poor exchange rates from SEK to USD. But currently I'm in the middle of finishing my move to the new apartment. I need to be out of the old one on the 30th of June, so I'm to tired to handle all this Ali mess at the same time 😅
Also remember that Ali would step in after 70 days if the watches are not delivered...you could wait till then to file a claim 🤔

Nice clean no frills watch. John, in your honest opinion, at the moment, what is the NH34 GMT (white dial, snow flake if possible, BGW9, steel bracelet) to get from Ali?
To be honest I cannot answer that for you. There are so many at different price points and sizes from different brands and I have not handled them all. Pick a style and a size that suits...find a price point and dip your toe in :)
@@johnswatchjoint I fully understand where you're coming from, but within those you have already covered which would you go for? The STEELDIVE Official GMT SD1992 or the Pagani Design 2024 New NH34 V4??

Ouch! 13.4 is pretty tall for a field watch. And the case shows it - it looks a little tubby in side view. The design is lovely - the Bauhaus design looks good on a simple watch. However, I think I'll stick to my classic Khaki mechanical.
I wear my watches on my right wrist, so I couldn’t get over the "09", looks like a "60" to me… would annoy me to no end.
Initially i thought it’s titanium, but 316L is fine.
There are two piece elastic nylon Straps, in this orange, which wouldn’t "ruin" the intended look but also would eliminate those gaps.
I like the overall design, looks decent and the orange is nice touch!
But the price, oh boy, look at what brands like San Martin offer at a cheaper price: OTF clasp, metal bracelets, finishing to die for.
If you would’ve said, that’s 150 bucks, I would’ve said, tad pricey but alright for somewhat original design but this? No thank you!

Unfortunately everyone now sees watches through different eyes which is really dangerous for our hobby. It won't survive if people don't see value in watches costing more than $250...remember what a smart watch costs and that it's disposable 😞
Very expensive for a Miyota 8215 powered watch. Nice design though. If it was a bead blasted bracelet, it would be better value. China made for about sixty bucks.
Unfortunately everyone sees watches through the eyes of AliExpress now. If we don't snap out of it then there will be nothing but smart watches. It's sad.

From a designer's standpoint and also a watch enthusiast, my critique:
1. Bauhaus AND field watch confuses me. The '70s-'80s case shape with an earlier dial-design aesthetic is inelegant. Suggests too many random parts in the design toolbox to choose from. John mentions that this is a watch for the office environment - what's next, combat staplers?
2. The elevated lugs teetering on a fat case is unbalanced (but Bauhaus-Modernism just might be intentionally going for that - waiting on the Brutalist case version that actually draws blood)
3. Warehouse/inventory code stamped on the side of the case - unnecessary and
a distraction. Also, ugly. Think the case designer appreciates that?
4. Lots of small, homogeneous and busy text on the dial - tough to get a fix where you're at in a glance
5. Date window cut-out too small and revealing even smaller date text (different font?). A circle cut-out is relatively unusual - so, make something of it!
6. It's all a bit pasty - missing contrast. Old and faded 75 yr old blueprints vs rich, deep-blue indigo sheets that you want to nibble on
