I thought it was going to be an awesome episode. Because I could also feel the oppression from the stax pieces. And then a player spent three mana and won the game. I am so sick and tired of seeing that fish in general, but what really upset me with this episode is it completely circumvented what makes stax matches interesting. As Joseph explained in an earlier episode, stax is interesting because players need to figure out how to work around the stax, when to remove stax pieces, and when to use them to your advantage. Resolving a game winning combo for two cards, three mana, and not needing any permanents to stick on the battlefield eliminated that entire aspect of the match. Winter orb and Aven Mindcensor combined didn't even make that combo remotely challenging despite being powerful stax effects.

To me it doesn't really seem that bad. cEDH is all about playing efficiently and optimally. Consult Oracle is precisely that, and so is Fish Hulk combos. I will not tell you you're wrong about not liking it. But to me, seing these combos for a "Quick and easy" win to me is exciting because you know the other players is trying to do the same thing. If you want diverse and special win cons then I think a more casual approach should be where you look

@@casp3213 I think what bothers me is honestly just that it's everywhere. If every deck was food chain or tiki jiki I would be frustrated with those cards. This was an amazing episode. I love the 9001 IQ play of delaying the Claim with Lavinia on the field. What a chad :D
...but, yet another game ends with oracle consultation. That's the main problem with competitive games: there is always a meta that must be followed or you will almost never win. I got excited because it looked like Jordan had a response, tapping the mana for a Swan Song, or exiling Ashiok for a FoW... but nope, the game ended.
Your videos (and those of Playing with Power) have radically changed my mind regarding cEDH, and now I'm intrigued and in love with the format even if I still only play casual EDH, but Oracle sickens me to the core. No one dares play anything else. Jace/Labman weren't as busted because they needed to resolve and stay on the field to win, making them much more fragile wincons (Labman more so than Jace), but Oracle is an ETB, so even if she dies, you still win.
In my opinion, it's damaging for the format. It greatly reduces variety and it's much harder to interact with. It won't be banned, especially since it's FOTM, but perhaps we need a response, something like Aven Mindcensor but for ETBs, probs like this:
    Card Name, WW
    Creature
Flash. When this creature is cast/enters the battlefield, counter all abilities on the stack that were triggered by a permanent entering the battlefield.
Creatures entering the battlefield cannot cause abilities to trigger.
    2/2
Specific counter, yes, but it also stops future Oracles. And it's a creature so it, in itself, can be easily removed. So it's a counter but not an OP counter.
ok, rant over. I'm just sick of seeing the same wincon over and over and over. I understand the need for optimization in cEDH, and it's not the fault of the players, but it's just a flaw inherently present in the format, and all thanks to WotC. I'm hoping that Ikoria or Comm. Legends can give us a proper counter to Oracle for the sake and health of the format. ^_^

@@StormKyoshi Wow, so many counters! Torpor Orb, Hushbringer, and Tocatli Honor Guard also exist and stop Oracle!
Now, I have one question. With so many counters, then why is Oracle win so prolific? Because all those answers go elsewhere.
A specific counter would be a response to Oracle the way Mindcensor is a response to tutors, fetches, etc. It isn't specifically targeted, it can disrupt other things, but it is a panic button that is unlikely to be wasted on other targets because it isn't that versatile.

Amazing presentation! Your videos makes it really easy to follow all the stuff going on and without seeming distracting or so small that you can miss it. Great commantary and great game. Keep the not top tier commanders coming I feel like they make for your best videos. I understand the sentiment that the Consult + Oracle combo can seem boring. @CasuallyCompetitiveMTG  4 года назад +17

We understand that people may find the line uninteresting and, like it was mentioned early in the video, we will do what we can to make sure consultation based decks are less prominent; however, as a playgroup we don't find consultation wins overbearing and we don't find that games that end in consult are less interesting. For us, the entertainment from the game is from the journey of building the win. The turns learning up to and planning are the parts that are exciting. If this game ended in a Iso/Rev + Payout combo I personally wouldn't have found it any more or less entertaining. The combo or the actual way that the win was secured isn't as relevant as the process that the necessary cards were obtained and resolved.
Like mentioned in the video, we understand and appreciate the feedback on Consultation lines specifically, and we will do what we can to plan out pods accordingly moving forward (Season 2 has already been fully recorded, so these changes will take place in season 3), but I did want to share out point of view on how we see Consultation.

I'll start by saying I love the channel and the quality vids you put out.
What drew me to your channel initially was the "casually" competitive bit. I think brewing with different commanders is great and people enjoy seeing different commanders lead a deck strategy mainly because we play some of those commanders and want to see what others do with them.
That said. Thassa's oracle/consultation is hardly a casually competitive strategy. Just because it's in a deck led by non Thrasios and has to do a little more work to get the pieces for the win doesn't change the deck strategy and in that sense makes it the same deck really. All the notable pieces are still there to facilitate and protect the combo so the only different is the item in the command zone.
Any deck that plays oracle uses it as the wincon and if that's the case the deck is built to get to it. It's fine if you guys enjoy playing lab man style wins (even Oracle specifically) but as a viewer I get tired of seeing consultation wins in every single cedh channel there is (and there's not even that many). I smirk the moment I see consultation as a wincon in a deck in a gameplay video because I already know the outcome. Cast oracle trigger on the stack cast consultation win.
How about a few videos with zero consultation and make decks that are "casually" competitive using less popular but still potent and viable wincons?
You guys are crafty enough to work that out.

    • @ComradeCommunism
      @ComradeCommunism 4 года назад +1

The Oracle/Consultation combo feels almost exactly like watching a flashHulk shell go off; Yes, it's a very competitive and viable way of taking a game, but the viewing experience it creates is extremely deterministic and quite frankly boring. What roped me into watching this channel was seeing some of the extremely clever lines that were being played out in some of your earlier games, and the effort to curtail the overall power level so that matches weren't just 50% Tymna/Thrasios lists.
While I'd personally like to see the rules committee step up and just ban Thassa's Oracle and Flash, I think that coming to the agreement that those specific strategies should be benched for the time being would probably contribute positively to your channel in the long term.

Example: mana crypt triggers during Bill's upkeep. If you changed the color of the border from yellow to red (or anything else), I think it would be much easier to follow. Sometimes multiple people have mana crypt out simultaneously, or similar spells. Which is which?

Error at 13:30. It casts, is countered, but also would have triggered the remora. Probably not too important 🙂

Lavinia is one of my favorite commanders. Knowledge Pool and Omen Machine are just funny on their own without her, but then the laughing stops when your opponents realize Lavinia is coming down too...
Also can I say Nate's playmat is looking very spicy. Where did you pick it up? I want the spaghetti monsters too.

The Man, the myth, the legend - Bill

  • @mwillis86
    @mwillis86 4 года назад

Love the channel and the videos. It really didn't affect the game but I believe Nate should have had a Mystic Remora trigger when Bill's Nature's Claim came off suspend. Lavinia's can't cast ability relates to the CMC of the spell being greater than the number of lands. Her second ability, the one regarding no mana being spent, is a triggered ability that happens after the spell is cast. Since Bill has more than 1 land Lavinia's first ability doesn't apply. So I believe what should have happened is the Nature's Claim unsuspends, Bill has to cast it targeting something, then both Mystic Remora and Lavinia trigger in turn order. Lavinia's ability resolves countering the Claim, followed by Nate's Remora trigger which asks Bill if he wishes to pay 4.

Bill shouldn't have been able to cast Selvala during the third turn cycle since Lavinia was on the battlefield due to the fact that he only had 2 lands and Selvala costs 3 mana to cast.

We've already recorded all of season 2 but the general plan will just to be a bit more sparse with archetypes people don't like seeing too often. Rather than not put a consultation win-line in a deck where it belongs, we will plan to schedule these consultation decks to show up less frequently

jace cunning castaway ? aminatou's combo is better for sisay (can put cards from hand in deck which is great for sisay and is tricolored and derevi + bloomtender/faeburrow elder and minatou can combo off (-1 aminatou find nicol bolas -1 him on derevi find oath of teferi and infinite aminatou -1 = infinite mana and win from a oath of kaya or a ashiok) and so if derevi is good in the deck you could play najeela cause 1she's red and she can infinite with derevi and if we got a bloom tender//faeburrow only 1 creature need to connect (linvala for example)
godo helm is also good hammer of nazhaan isn't too bad of a protection with a sisay activation and can turn you mind about which combo you try to go for in fact the only card i talked about and i don't feel it's great is najeela but you're not forced to play her it's just a not too bad secondary wincon but this jace isn't great of a card + can't realy combo instant when he and bolas comes or i don't figured out how this combo is supposed to work (i assume it's about his ultimate creating more nicol bolas but it's a bit mhe) btw sisay is a legit deck in cedh i feel sad to see that here it's the deck that's behind

I do enjoy the game play but find myself disappointed that it keeps being thassas consultation that wins games. It's just so easy and hard to react to and it shows in every win you guys have.

Almost every time I see the Oracle+Consultation win, the player who did it already drew at least 15 extra cards, or played multiple tutors. The combo is just an arbitrary end after the value train arrives.
