Great car to learn stick on. Super light and forgivable. I learned manual on a Miata when I was 16. My friend bought a manual car without knowing how to drive it either, so I had to go with him and drive it back home from NJ to NY lol. So you're not alone.
Definitely never too late to learn! The Miata has been super fun to drive around and I always get some jealous looks haha. Love this car to death!

The easiest thing for me when I learned how to drive a manual is that the clutch is pretty much Neutral. It makes things a little simpler and you don't have to think about 5 different things while trying to learn as well as paying attention to the road and the car. When ever you clutch in, that's when no gears are engaged, so neutral. All the clutch does is when you let it out, whatever gear you're currently in is going to be engaged. Then the only other thing is that when ever you change gear, let go of the gas pedal completely and clutch in all the way. Just think that the clutch is the key that opens a door. Without turning that key, you cannot open the door for the gear to engage.

found this video because i’m looking into getting a miata, but my first car that i ever bought was a stick and i barely knew anything about it. the car was in santa clarita near LA and i live way up north near seattle. flew down and drove all the way back up and learned stick on the fly! i’ll never forget that trip and i’ll never regret learning stick. i bet you’re really good at stick considering this video is 3 years old now!
Love my miata to bits. I really should post an update video and keep at youtube. Its 100% worth it whether you get an NA, NB, ND, heck even an NC. I get compliments from car lovers and ppl who know nothing about cars everyday I drive it. Absolutely no regrets whatsoever. Wish you the best and hope you get your yata soon! Drive safe!

Damn bro, this video was so amazing and wholesome to watch for me.. i remember my dad learning me manual when i was 7yr old and developing my love for cars. Now im finishing my mechanic school and I see my future with cars, Miata was always my dream car and i want to buy one in near future, it was amazing to see your joy, it really shows that u can have emotional feelings towards your cars.. theyre not just lifeless machines like many think. Am learning stick shift on a Fiat 500x iam trying to shake this anxiety I have about driving it even through out my life I’ve learned and I’ve been taught in my early 20s to drive a stick manual I just need to get over it and do it because I know I Can and I’ve done it!

Yo. Representing the Bay. I know 280 when i see it. This video is almost a year old. Hows the driving now? I just bought an STI last week as my first manual. It was challenging getting it home. My dad and I figured it out eventually. My friend took me out the next day to practice. I took a few lessons before hand though, so i had some knowledge.

How has your stick shift driving been since this video? I started just a couple months ago but on a much older car from the 70s, that's brutal and pretty unforgivable when you mess up, but that's due to it running on a carburetor. No tachometer to guide me, no power steering. Not fun. I want to get a Mazda Miata NA with the popup headlights or an NB like you have here, not JUST for learning manual but because I've wanted the car since I was a child. This car seems like the best car to learn and drive stick on period. Everyone says its light and forgiving.
Hi so sorry for the late reply! Yes! The miata has been super forgiving. My Miata has power steering and i think most of them do. It has been a joy to drive and i hope to keep it as long as i can. I look on Facebook Marketplace and they have appreciated double of what i paid for it back when i first bought it. They are super fun to drive and kids think theyre Lamborghinis. I get looks everywhere i drive. Honestly one of the best things ive ever purchased

I'm not sure. Maybe try releasing the clutch slower when switching gears. Are you thinking it's more of a personal problem or something wrong with your car?
