Chopin Prelude Op 28 No. 7 (the 2 liner) was featured in the movie 'Ragtime'. I never knew what that piece was until now. It's a good scene. I had always thought it was a piece composed by Randy Newman for the movie. Going to try to learn it! Thanks! - Just to add, your performance of Chopin Nocturne Op 9 No 2 is my favorite. It's a special piece in my opinion, my new favorite classical piece, so relaxing. Trying to learn that too.

This makes me realize again how much treasures there are among the piano literature, at any level really. I've been learning to play the piano for about 3 years now and I haven't played a single Czerny (or Czerny-like) etude, only 'real' pieces, and there is still so much to explore at even my level, like some of the easier Chopin preludes, easier Haydn/Mozart/Scarlatti works, Bach inventions... It's really crazy how much amazing repertoire there is!

The reason I wanted to post a comment is that I want to thank you for having those awesome feedbacks on what gone right and what gone wrong in your music plays. I find it super stimulating to keep respecting that we are not a robot who does everything perfect and that we should accept that our body (in this case the hand and fingers) struggles or does not function the whole time like we would want it to. I'm happy to see a vlog of you from your childhood / the pieces that you learned. Recently I sort boxes out with things from my childhood, teenage time (I'm 27). I found a lot of pieces back from my first 7 years (before I took a break) of learning the piano. I was a little excited when I found cards back with on each card one note in the treble clef or the bass clef (on the other side the name of the note) to learn to read the notes when I was 9. I already learned to play the violin for 2 years before I started to learn the piano. I don't think the cards where from when I learned the violin because you only need the treble clef. I couldn't remember that I had those cards to learn to read the notes before I went to music school when I was 10

Watching Tiffany for more then 2 years now. The very first time i listened one of her recordings something resonated deep inside my musical side. Ofc i watch other pianists, good ones... but as an example to my point... i watched Lang Lang, i guess a real pro.. but after a while i just closed it... for some reason it annoyed me. Now i know... the way people are, their character, their emotions, their ego, the way they are thinking... all this translates into their work (not only musicians). What i felt (and still do) listening to her just made me feel good, her way of playing just flows with my senses. I found other pianists (Grigory Sokolov... Claudio Arrau.. to name a few) which i enjoy listening, but with her it's just that "mysterious particle" which i hope she won't lose it ever. Keep striving?... yes...we will :)) thanks Tiffany

I started piano lessons at 11 years of age. Way to late because ideally a musical nurturing begins in the womb and musical nurturing matters so much in the first months and years of a child's life. My teacher put me through the grades without visiting these formative pieces.. It's important not to rush the foundation years and to learn all these preliminary and intermediate pieces. It's really helpful for a professional concert pianist to share her early repertoire, and what a nice person she is, and because she is willing to allow slips on her videos makes her very approachable. I will encourage my kid to watch this video and to look at Tiffany Poon playing piano. on RUclips. Thanks.

So glad you said to “not compare you/your child to my playing/pieces, this is just my musical journey”. I feel like that was a really important note because a lot of kids end up not liking piano or classical music because they were forced to play it and constantly compared with other students (like I was). It was only when I started exploring classical music by myself and listening to what I enjoyed did I really start enjoying playing piano and now I always look forward to when I have free time and can practice. Personal exploration and journeys are so important, especially for art!

I‘m kinda in the exact state of mind like u. I started playing the piano when I was around 9 I guess and it was fun but nothing I was very excited about. I wasn’t forced to practice so I just didn’t and that’s one of the reasons that after 10 years I’m not as good in playing as I could be. Nearly two years ago I stopped having a teacher and I became way more interested in classical music in general. Since then I practice around an hour a day and I feel how I become better and better and even though the pieces I want to play are sometimes way out of my standards I at least try and it kinda works.
So that was just a little story of my piano experiences and I hope u have a beautiful day!

Couldn't agree more with Daniel! I am from Singapore and used to play the piano as a young kid. Made Grade 8 at 12 and Adv Cert at 13. But as some of you would know how it is in Singapore with the paper trail chase, my time was always spent practising the same old pieces and trying to perfect it for examination. I finally reached the limit and got quite sick of piano after age 13 and just dumped it. Now, about 25 years later and thanks to Covid, I got myself a Yamaha digital grand (last piece before the semicon shortage hit with full force) and started playing for leisure. At first, everything was almost gone, couldn't even remember the notes! But it all slowly but surely began to come back. And now spending some time here and there trying to practise various Chopin pieces, all at my own leisure and without the pressure of the dreaded exam word (and parental pressure). There was no love at the end at age 13. There is definitely some now!

Tiffany your are truly inspiring!! I admire your modesty and honesty in the way you show your piano journey when most of popular people intend to make it like a competition of who make things faster
More to say: And the beauty of playing is exact what you show in this video, when you find some part of a piece that surprises you or you particularly like because it makes you feel something, or you find it so exciting that you want to tell people about it, even though they may not understand. That is what makes playing the piano interesting and fun! Not playing the largest and most difficult pieces in a short time, just enjoy the process of learning every piece!

  • @evanofelipe

Tiffany your vlogs are of immense interest because we can all relate your experience of learning to play the piano to your own. Whilst many of us can recall how it felt to successfully play a particular piece that intrigued us, The difference is clearly that you were ‘on another level’ but were just as taken as we were. For me the fascination and ‘draw’ of actually being able to play a piece of beautiful music, albeit (in my case) incompetently felt so much more rewarding than just simply listening to it. However, to share the moment and be present when an accomplished pianist plays is a privilege and a very special experience. That’s where you come in. We may not be actually present when you play, but we can share the next best thing. A virtual presence, if you like. Please continue doing what you do, because you do it well and I feel there’s a genuine honesty in your sharing. Thanks 🙏

I was an electric guitarist since i was 9, i like it very much and was good at it yet i was really interested in classical music, so when i was 15 i picked up classical guitar to enter music school, i did pretty well in there yet i never felt really comfortable with the classical guitar and never really liked it. When i was 17 i had to analyze the intro of the patetique sonata and reduce it to string quartet, i have never heard it before and wasnt really familiar with beethoven, i tought the score was complicated and weird and the harmony didnt really made sense to me. I did my homework and tought and i got excited because it was kinda hard and the score seemed really pretty and when the mdi played it i got so excited and it sounded so awesome to me. I got obsessed with this piece and decided to learn it in the piano, at that time knew how to play chords to songs, i played them parallel in both hands in octaves (C-E-G-C for example) with very basic rythm altough i had really good ear and read music pretty well reading both hands and playing with both hands was completely alien to me. i picked up both hands separated very slowly and then unite them (like 1 measure a 100 times) and working with the fast scales with the metronome very slowly going up 5 bpm when i got it and being really careful with fingering and tension. i got the intro really well except the scales after 1 month of only playing that 24/7. then i moved to the rest and i remember being astonished (and kinda scared) with every measure but i put my all because i loved it so much even tough i remember listening to the sonata and thinking that was imposible but i wanted to at least know the notes and the harmonies and just do my best i guess, after like 7 months i got all the first movement at a decent speed altough i stoped a lot when i messed up. I remember even tough every time the piece got harder, learning it was easier and it took less time, especially because i could read slowly one hand pretty well. Eventually i got the whole sonata pretty well after 1 year and i remember i got so good at the piano that the 2nd and 3rd movement i learned so fast (in this i have to thank Tiffany because in her videos i learned that you can sightread both hands at the same time and with speed wich at the time i tought it was inhumane even tough i could sightread very well one line, it just takes a different mindset and position of the eyes, practicing withouth looking at your hands and experience with fingering and piano in general, and like everything else practice slowly and gradually speeding up and you become better). Now two years later i consider myself a really good piano player and i can compete with people who have played competitions since they were a child, i also am in music university and love piano more than anything else (and the pathetique is by far is my best piece wich i am really proud and still love it). Of course i had music training before but i wanted to share this because at the time the tought of being a piano player was impossible to me. My advice for beginers is: Use the metronome, learn listen and reproduce the notes doesnt matter in wich level just try to do it and you get better at it every day (with this i refer to relative pitch), learn to sight read both hands at the time and just like speed you work it from the bottom, hands separate and really slow (really doesnt matter how slow, altough in this you have to challenge yourself since is really easy to get comfortable with something), have a really critical ear and eyes with pianist better than you (doesnt matter how much better) and expect the same for yourself altough you have to recognize you are not there YET, speed, precision, tone, stamina, resistance all this things come from the brain and the heart first, as i think Lizt said "think 50 times and play once" this was especially useful in speed since i got better with that when i could hear and sing in my head all the notes of the piece at tempo and with the same emotion as if i was playing it, try to hear both hands separated at the same time (this was also something that seemed impossible when i was learning and im still working on it but just try it and practice it), quality is better than quantity altough you also want lots of quantity, and lastly is better to learn easy things first but if you want to get better you have to play hard things, just keep and mid the work and time is gonna take and always with quality, and you will learn faster to play the piano altough you are going to know less pieces (in my first i just knew that one piece to play in public, after one year of that i have like 3 hours worth of concert with much harder pieces than that, because i learn so much more with harder pieces altough it took a lot of patience and effort).
I write this to inspire beginners who also think it is impossible to become a pianist and to play this difficult pieces, still learning tough!.

If you want to learn the piano just don't wait. Get started now. I guarantee you that it is hard and at times you will want to give up. You need to push yourself for the first 3 months, spend an hour each day for practices. Besides learning the songs also practice the scales and arpeggios, it is boring but essential. If your passion remains after 3 months, you will probably continue on your own steam and become an advanced pianist one day.

It took me 3 years to play Fur Elise and 5 years for Sonata in C major, and darn it I still don’t these beginners pieces well but I play Mendelssohn songs without words (a lot more difficult) well.
