    Great video!
    I own the crono and have been using the original filter burrs for my espresso for about 4 months now. Made the switch to espresso-burrs yesterday and it’s honestly like night and day. First thing I noticed was that the grind time is reduced by almost half. Popcorning is almost at 0 (probably helps the grind time).
    I would say that the espresso is smoother and sweeter compared to the filter burrs. There’s probably less fines compared to before which might have reduced bitterness. For the price (35 euro) I’m really pleased with the outcome!

    I stumbled into a filtro as my espresso grinder. I bought it when it came out for filter, found out it came with the same espresso burrs and absolutely hated it, and put it away in my cabinet for two years. I later got a Silvia Pro X as my first espresso machine and used this grinder happily. The single dose hopper, tilted base, and removal of the declumper (plus RDT) have gotten me down to under .1g retention. Another trick is I leave the front face plate off the machine. This allows the rubber chute cover to be lifted for easy cleaning after each use.

    I got mine (b stock) for 150€. Great espresso with stock burrs but very little range for adjustment: let's say 1/2 number of the gear between an extremely runny shot to a very slow running one. All good but after around 6 months I changed the burrs with the espresso ones (notice I found quite a bit of coffee stucked in the chamber although I was using the filter burrs)and I noticed a way more more room for adjustments: let's say a full number on the gear. Plus, a way less clumps. So overall very happy of the change. Plus I also made a littled to the buttons that allow me to use the main switcher without having to keep pressing the all the time.

    Hi great review. I also bought the Chrono (a couple of years ago) and used it for espresso. It was fine however just a few days ago i changed the burrs for espresso burrs and am pleased I have done so. With the Filtro burrs an espresso grind is easily possible however I noticed after changing to espresso burrs that the Filtro burrs needed to be on a much finer setting, they would take 2 to 3 times as long to grind a 15g dose and even with bellows there was greater retention. For the small additional cost it is definitely worth getting espresso burrs.

    This was a great examination of the Eureka range. I was curious about the differences between the models too, so I looked for replacement parts. The motor for the Specialita is £100 more expensive than the motor for the Brew Pro, for example. Does this mean they have different designs? I'm not sure. Both machines weigh the same though.
    Another thing I looked at was the Moccamaster KM5. That's a pretty new machine, and the general opinion is that it's based on the Filtro. The unit is a whole kilo less in weight however. I can't see where that weight loss occurred, given that the KM5 should be just a reskin of the Eureka. 🤔

    • @TechDregs
      @TechDregs  Месяц назад

      I couldn't answer for sure on the motors. As far as the KM5, it does look similar, but the body is different. It looks like it's extruded aluminum, whereas the Eurkea's look like they are cast. That could be where the weight savings are. The bottom of the Eureka's come out in the front, where as the KM5 doesn't.

    I made el-cheapo change on another Eureka, the 65e. Purshased a burr holders and burrs for 75mm Olympus. Changed them and now I have 75e ;-) The chamber is the same but tighter fitting, so there is not that much room for retention. Speed of things came plenty faster, actually too fast for comfort, 65mm had appr 12secs and now if spits same amount in 4secs. -BTW: If I'd be buying a Mignon, I'd find the Turbo, cheapest 65mm version.

    • @TechDregs

      @@TechDregs Yes, I bet there is no "own" burr-chamber in every burr-size in mignon-series either.And to add: If I recall the crono had actually esresso burrs in some earlier state, and espresso burrs have 2 options, harder:"diamond inside" and normal. Mine has 4 options, steel, titanium "diamond inside" and "redspeed" I have not intended to get those pricier ones as I know mine last at least 5 years on my grinding, and these cheaper are...cheaper.

  • @joshlazar495
    @joshlazar495 Год назад +4

    @Tech Dregs:
    "Again the espresso burr set is the only real difference"
    My suspicion is that the "espresso burr set" is mostly marketing. I dont see anywhere (your video or elsewhere) that the "espresso burr set" demonstrates has any substantive, real difference from "filter burrs", beyond Eureka's colorful description. And most people see that and assume it has some real meaning, that if they buy the Filtro or Crono, theyll need to upgrade to "espresso burrs"
    Someone mentioned below, in 2020 they were still calling the mignon/filtro burrs "espresso burrs" even though now somehow they are now "filter burrs" I've been using these "filter burrs" for espresso, they choke my machine, no problem, with fineness setting to spare.
    Did you see any real substantive difference between these "filter burrs" and "espresso burrs"? If so you ought to elaborate in the video, its the one area where you dont really substantiate as strongly as on other comparison points.

    • @TechDregs
      @TechDregs  Год назад +2

      They are different. Look around 18:50 in the video; I literally show them side by side and discuss the differences.
      The actually did introduce new "filter" burrs on the recent models. Older versions had the burrs which are now referred to as "espresso" burrs. So, people in 2020 did, in fact, get espresso burrs and people that have bought in the past year or so got filter burrs.

    I have had the new Crono for 6 months now and I was using it mostly for brew coffee with the occasional espresso. I never felt I could get a consistent espresso grind no matter how hard I tried to be as accurate as possible. I finally was fed up trying to use the crono for espresso and bought a Facile espresso grinder. The ground espresso is night and day different between the expresso burrs of the facile and the brew burrs of the crono. Also the facile has sound dampening and it’s so much quieter when grinding than the crono. That being said yes if you want to convert a crono or filtro to an espresso grinder and change out the burrs I don’t think you will be disappointed. The only thing I will say is that I was told by one of the US retailers of the Eureka grinders that the espresso grinder motors are heavy duty compared to the brew grinders because there’s quite a bit more stress put on them. Take that for what it’s worth.

    • @TechDregs
      @TechDregs  Год назад +1

      Interesting, I didn't use the filter burrs long. Just a little while waiting on the espresso burrs to arrive. I wouldn't doubt they aren't as consistent; they are quite a different profile. As I mention, I got a lot of popcorning with them, and that would lend itself to more grind variation.
      I would need to see the motor difference to believe it. I can't think of any reason that grinding for espresso would put a substantial amount of stress on the motor that a filter grind wouldn't face. Plus, the motor in the Crono is huge, considering the work it has to do. That said, I haven't actually examined them myself, so it's possible that they are different.

    How would this function as a multi-purpose grinder? I brew drip almost daily and recently got an entry level espresso machine. Crono looks great but I'm not sure about going back and forth between the two settings.

    • @TechDregs
      @TechDregs  2 года назад +2

      Yeah, it probably would be tough if you're using it for two different machines that need different grinds. The dial does have marks for reference, but depending on how far of an adjustment you need to make, the dial spins more than one rotation, so that might be tough to keep track of. Because then you'd nee to remember something like "ok, it's 2 full turns and then back to setting 5" or something.

      @@TechDregs yeah, I think I can live with that when the alternative is spending a few hundred bucks more. One more question though, how does the button work with the timer? For example, does it stop grinding when there is still time to go? Like, can I use it as a start/stop switch without adjusting the timer?
      Btw,I don't know if you're aware of this but I saw some posts on Reddit that suggested adding auto insulation material inside the casing, claiming a few decibels decrease in the noise levels.
      Cheers

    • @TechDregs
      @TechDregs  2 года назад

      @@efeyamacyarbas8658 Hadn't seen the insulation bit, but IMO... I doubt it's worth it. Maybe... but I think most of the noise is coming from the actual grinding, not the motor or case resonance. Anyway, the timer on the Crono is not interruptible. Once it starts, the machine will run, and pushing the start/stop button again won't do anything. I do wish they would change that, but that's how it works. So, you push the button, it's going to run for the set time unless you turn off the master power switch. The start/stop button won't do anything after it starts running.

      Eureka's website still has them listed as 310w. It's possible that the vendor's website is just incorrect. The Filtro/Crono/Manuale are all 50mm burr grinders. The Manuale is basically the Filtro, but it comes already set up for espresso, with the espresso burrs and a portafilter fork instead of a grind bin. The Filtro and the Crono only differ in the fact that the Crono has a timer. The Manuale, like the Filtro, does not have a timer.

    • @Squilliam-Fancyson
      @Squilliam-Fancyson Год назад +1

      @@TechDregs Yeah I see US prices are rly blown. Here in Europe you get them much cheaper. There is a new 55mm Mignon out there now. The Mignon Zero. Comes with single dose hopper but thankfully without display.(not needed anyway). It should be available for 350$ soon.(300€ in Europe) Chiscoffee already has it for 450$ which sadly is very blown.
      The 55mm burrs are around 20% bigger than the 50mm ones.(2*r*π) I know 5mm does not sound much but it rly makes a huge different, especially the upgraded ones. Also the diamond burrs produce much more consistent coffee powder.

    • @TechDregs
      @TechDregs  Год назад

      The 55mm burrs actually have around 33% more surface area (presuming they have the same 30mm mounting hole in the middle). However, that should really only contribute extra grinding speed... I think the quality of the grind is more to do with the geometry of the burr itself. Speed isn't a big concern for me though, as this grinder goes plenty fast for me. I'm not sure shaving 5 seconds or so off the grind time would make any difference to me.
      The bigger burrs will also have a faster interface ("surface speed") at the outside edge, since they have the same motor RPM, but IDK if that makes much difference. I am curious why Italmill or SSP don't sell upgraded burrs for these things... there are a lot of them out there, and if the diamond burrs are the improvement you say, I bet a lot of people might be interested in something like that. Heck, obviously the DF64 people are all about that... why not for the Mignon?
      The Zero is still $500 here ($450 is for an open box/used one). I guess Eureka is eventually going to realize that they are competing against themself with their lineup, and differentiate their models more, or something.
