The problem comes when your original bumperets have been distorted by a bump, I use a ratchet woodworkers sash clamp with the head reversed to push the bumper apart, this works very well, and yes beaks up, although I have seen wartime photos with them pointing down I am sure these were just fitted that way locally. The Jeep is looking great!
I am not 100 percent sure. I have heard simple decoration, design to give strength, so that it could be stepped on...etc. I think perhaps to give more surface area when extended from the rear cross member.
