As always Scott, thanks, very informative. Restoring a January 1942 MB..( Got rid of all my Jeep projects a year before, and swore I was through restoring Jeeps ! . ) Well, one came knocking that was basically GIVEN to me..). I still had my restored Red CJ2A....When the general told me I could keep one..., but not two...Well.. sold " Little Red" with the funds being used to restore Mr. ' 42..... Chain Driven...

Good catch on those over length bolts on the cover plus the oil inlet modification. Bubba is known to do these things. Great video Scott!

It happens a lot from what I understand. Parts manual is key👍

Great commentary on gear vs chain!! Slightly of subject, but interesting. I just finished rebuilding a 1600cc VW Bug engine. And getting started rebuilding my 1953 Willys engine. Ford, when they changed to gear driven crank to cam, must have had knowledge of VW’s engine, because Ford’s gear drive exactly duplicates VW’s design. I thought this to be interesting and a great upgrade to the reliability of the Willys engine.

Is there a known cutoff between the chain driven and gear driven engines? I have a 1945 CJ2A #10496 currently fitted with a chevy 350 from the previous owner, curious to know what it would have originally had.

The change from the chain driven engine happened mid 1946, resources say July at CJ2A #43282.
There are a few 2As that got chain driven engines after that, but not many.

my gear driven l134 doesn't have a hole for the fuel pump . do you know why

OK , few things here ......Not 100% sure but Granville King mentions in his jeep bible that MBs switch to gear drive in late '43 -early '44 , Mine is a September 1944 and I seem to have gear drive . Going from the description of the covers you posted here , anyway . NOW , How can you tell which oil pump you have ? I'm kind of getting tired of taking put together stuff apart to check ! LOL ......I told you mine needs an "Exorcist" !!!

Frank, to my knowledge all g503 Jeeps, both Willys and Ford, all had chain driven engines. The gear drive didn’t come out until mid 1946.
Even the Early 45-46 CJ2As had chain driven engines.

Is there an aftermarket source for these covers?

At the moment none that I am aware of. However, NOS and good take offs are available. Is there something specific you need?
