    My favourite bit of old timey surgeon trivia, is the most fatal surgery. Amputations were common and the key to their success was speed. The total time of this surgery was 13 seconds, the surgeon cut the leg with such speed, he cut off his assistants fingers. Later both assistant and patient passed away from infection. This was being observed, one of the observers died from a heart attack while watching. So the surgery was 300% fatal.

    I attend an event called pennsic and we call our medical staff, on site, chirurgeon. The popular pronunciation for this word is Ki (like kite) ur (like urn) geon (like surgeon) ki-ur-geon. Rolls off the tongue a lot better 🙂. Love this show. Totally needs more of a following.

    Here's a tip for chirurgeon's that worked for me; get the wizard or witch dedication and the extra familiar abilities which can include an extra reagent, independent, valet, increased movement, manual dex, etc. Most familiar abilities can be switched around every day as needed. There is also a handy 1st level spell called thoughtful gift which is perfect for ranged alchemy buffs and restoratives. Also, feed those combat mutagens to your party. They can make a huge difference. And poison their weapons, potential extra damage at the start of a fight means it ends sooner and they don't need to be healed as much. Alchemists rule!

    You forgot one of the most important aspects when comparing alchemist items to spells, they are items, you can give them to your team and everyone has the capacity to use them.
    Give the bombs to a ranger (better dex), and give some of the elixirs to the frontlines before the battle, swashbucklers have a free hand to use them and still hit ppl with a third action

    There's something very important that you forgot: Mutagens. They make Alchemists better at skills than any other Class. Take a look at Serene Mutagen and Cognitive Mutagen.
    Also as you need to get close to your allies to administer EoL, you can drink a Drakeheart Mutagen (it emulates heavy armor) and you can also give your allies Juggernaut Mutagen, which will give them temp HP so you won't even need to heal them that much. And don't forget the Mistform Elixir, it's nuts.

    Another great video!
    I do think you missed one important tip, however. At morning prep, the alchemist can equipment their whole team with one or two elixirs each. This saves you action economy because you will not need to run up to them. Also, if you go down, your party can still heal themselves (or you). Unlike the cleric, you can provide healing when you are not even there.
    Also, think of how much money the party saves with you on their team. Money is a very powerful weapon. Your fighter can just spend money on weapons and not worry about those consumables.

    Something that a lot of people have missed since it came out a bit later, but there's a barbarian subclass that hates magic right? So they won't accept magical healing, but alchemical healing? A-OK. Even better, there are all sorts of ways people screw with magic users. But an Alchemist gets around it entirely and even better there are some places with a stigma against magic use of some kind but there isn't a single place that turns their nose up against a good bit of medicine.

      I'm playing a forensic medicine investigator in one game. Coupled with the medic dedication, it's crazy how good he is at healing. The two synergize super well, I can battle medicine once per hour per target, and they get bonus healing for it from the methodology.

I started looking for info and found the bandolier (which lets you wear tools or 10 potions), but then saw there’s was an officially errata to help with having to buy things like bandoliers and pouches and all that that simplifies “wear capacity to be 2 Bulk (of your carrying capacity) of tools. Does that count for potions? Or is that strictly for things like alchemist and healers tools?

    Instead of giving your familiar the valet ability, I prefer giving them the independent and manual dexterity abilities, and having them start off each combat holding two Elixirs of life in their hands.
    This way, each turn (for up to two turns) the Familiar can hand you one elixir of life without you needing to spend an action to command it (you can still spend one of your own actions to grab a second elixir instead of commanding your familiar). And any turn you don't need an elixir, the familiar can spend their action to refill their hands with elixirs up to their max of two held at once (two hands). If your familiar is out of elixirs and you have an extra action to spend, command them to grab two Elixirs instead of one for the upcoming turns.
    This familiar could also start the combat on one of your allies instead of you, and act as two 'free action' heals throughout the combat. More if they carry extra Elixirs strapped to their body.

    • @Zedrinbot
      @Zedrinbot 3 года назад

      It takes an action for you to accept an item into your hand unless something specifies otherwise.
      However, you don't need manual dexterity for this--you can instead take valet still. Valet specifies that if your familiar has a unique number of action (e.g. 1 or 3) it can instead transfer that many items as normal.
      Manual dexterity's only needed to operate things (though familiars can't activate items). So like opening a door or lever, etc. Familiars explicitly cannot activate alchemical items, so they can't administer them to allies either.
      Valet + independent allows you familiar to just hand something off to you once per turn in this exact matter, or you can command it to do so twice on your turn.

    • @rylandrc
      @rylandrc 3 года назад

      @@Zedrinbot Thanks for clarifying it takes an action to accept an item into your hand. I hadn't noticed that before.
      As for Valet + Independent, I don't think that will work (at least by RAW). Valet specifies that your familiar needs to be commanded. I imagine the different number of actions section is more there for future proofing rather than to indicate that independent works with it. A GM could easily house-rule it to work though.
      (Also, I love your work. You put so much effort into it

    • @rylandrc
      @rylandrc 3 года назад

      @@Zedrinbot Also, where does it say that Familiars cannot activate alchemical items? I don't believe I saw that before.
      I've seen people say that Familiars can't activate items because they are animals, but the section on Familiars states that they become "something more" than animals. It would also be strange for some non-animal familiars to be able to activate Alchemical items (like Leshy Familiars for Druids, Alchemical Familiars for Alchemists, or object Familiars for one patron of the Witch class.) , While other familiars can't activate items because they are 'animals'.

    • @Zedrinbot
      @Zedrinbot 3 года назад +1

      @@rylandrc On note of command, if getting into the nitty gritty, it gets vague. Independent specifies the Command an Animal action as the exclusion, but you still get to typically decide how the familiar acts. The use of (lowercase) command seems to be more descriptive than a prerequisite.
      When I was mulling over how to solve the horrendous action economy of an alchemist (especially at low level), a friend of mine asked the question on it over in the pathfinder server a few months ago and got the response that independent and valet do work, though no idea if it was from one of the designers or just another player.
      It's certainly not game breaking with how kneecapped alchemists are by action economy / item juggling.
      (also thamk)

    • @Zedrinbot
      @Zedrinbot 3 года назад

      @@rylandrc basically, "Other items may qualify, at the GM’s discretion, but an animal can never Activate an Item." (CRB 604)

    • @LegendaryCMD
      @LegendaryCMD  Год назад +1

      A good Chirugeon probably wants to keep their hands free to patch up their patients...or at least one hand free so you can use your healer's tools. I guess I would lean into bombs. It's your only martial weapon that you have proficiency with. Hopefully you can spare a few reagents each day to make a few bombs or you could also purchase some lower level bombs for a reasonable amount. Put your intelligence at 18, put your dexterity at 16 and your strength and constitution at 12, and you can slap on a chain shirt or studded leather and have your AC maxed out right at first level. You will also have as good an attack chance as you can get with your bombs. Grab the first level feat quick bomber somehow and you are drawing and chucking as a single action. Now...if you hate that idea, maybe dabble in the mutagens and make unarmed attacks. Put strength at 16 and dex and con at 12, slap on some hide armor, drink a mutagen before the fight and let it rip!! hope that helps, have a great day!!!!!

    Wtf is google saying, man. Chirurgeon is a 100% Greek word. Χείρα, Chira, means hand. Ουργος, Urgos, is a suffix meaning maker (it derives from the Greek word έργον, ergon, which means creation). These two create the Greek word Χειρουργός, Chirourgos, which translates in modern English as surgeon.
    The ch in chirourgos is pronounced as you'd pronounce the j in Jorge in Spanish. So this is the correct pronunciation, at least the closest to the Greek pronunciation. But the French pronounce ch as a thick s, and that (along with deleting two syllables) is why you ended up saying "surgeon" in modern English.
    TLDR: Chirurgeon is (or at least should be) the correct way of saying surgeon, and it's a Greek word.
