    This is so true regarding the production of lactic acid when we don't pace appropriately. I learned this after pushing myself to get to a doctor's appointment, and ended up in the ER with acute lactic acidosis. This was very scary, but an excellent lesson that my body's metabolism was not producing energy efficiently. And no amount of motivation or determination is going to outrun that fact.

    I really appreciate Dr Myhill who has more knowledge of ME than any mainstream (trained in mainstream medicine at least) doctors I know of in the UK. However, I think she concentrates too much on diet. I am pleased that she mentions vegetarians and vegans here as in the past she has spoken a lot about eating meat,something that would cause me further stress if I had to eat it. I know many people with ME having helped to run our local group for years and only one person recovered by changing his diet - in his case it was the Candida diet. So many people now seem to be recovering from brain retraining techniques so that's where I'm personally focusing my efforts.

    I think it's a combination of many things. Trauma, stress and ANS dysregulation play a massive role, as does crappy detox pathways and a schizophrenic immune system. Holistic approaches addressing all of these work best. Supplements are the icing on the cake. Most of the cfs community are the most studious, intuitive and intelligent people I know, they don't miss a beat. I do like Sarah and her philosophies and I am sure it works for some but for many we have to dig a lot Deeper.I personally had the greatest success sorting out detoxification and addressing ANS dysregulation.
    Props to Raelan for getting on such a guest who really drives conversations.

    Great interview Raelan! Dr. Myhill clearly cares and has done so much to raise awareness and help people with ME/CFS get diagnosed and treated. I personally wish I wasn't so focused on the labels when I was searching for answers on the internet, because at the end of the day the way out is similar. I guess I had a dozen of them, but the body doesn't know labels. Hindsight is 20/20. Keeping my blood sugar stable and supporting my mitochondria was helpful. I realize I ate very similarly to Dr. Myhill's protocol (didn't do some of the supplements), which helped me for a while. But yeah diet isn't one-sized fits all -- many don't do well with keto, while some thrive on it. I wonder if it has to do with the organs that are affected. Now I eat a lot, lot more varied diet (when before I wouldn't even look at a grain). I think reducing all sources of stress and all the mind-body, brain rewiring, nervous system work to build autonomic nervous system resilience was more essential for me -- though my strict diet was helpful for me in the first 1-2 years.

    I love the passion and energy of Dr. Myhill. That's a lot of information to digest, so to speak. I wonder if there are studies and statistics that back up the diet she recommends. It seems that everyone has their own theory--and, often, diet--that they claim helps this illness. I've tried various diets, and nothing has made a difference, with one big exception. When I first got ill, eating a lot of protein definitely helped. But as time went on, it stopped having an effect. Now, I'm mostly on a Mediterranean diet, which is largely plant based. What's helped my ME is mindfulness meditation, developing an attitude of acceptance and gratitude, pacing and rest, and taking Abilify. Also, possibly, just the passage of time. It seems like there are many different paths to better health with ME. One size does not fit all.

    The most important thing about the Paleo/Ketogenic diet is the removal of the carbohydrates but there are factors in these diets that do not work for us because we have developed food intolerances to many of the foods in the in that style of diet. Likewise we can develop an intolerance to various, if not all, foods in the vegetarian diet. The reason for this is that ALL vegetation has a built in self-defence mechanism such as oxalaytes. salicicylates and lectins because we have lost the enzymes which process these chemicals. It seems to me that the longer we have had this condition the more likely we are likely to develop these food Intolerances. P.S. I have ME/CFS and I have these Intolerances, also I think this is one of the best interviews I have seen, well done Dr Myhill (I do have your book).

  • @bevillenz

    I applaud Dr. Myhill's passion and commitment to helping people with CFS and this is a mostly good information from Myhill in the interview. I am very familiar with Myhill's work as I followed her on RUclips four years ago, purchased and read her book, and implemented all of her healing strategies. It was a step in the right direction, but it didn't get me to a full recovery because I was still getting tripped up with ongoing gut dysfunction and a brain that needed retraining. My gut dysfunction was severe in the depths of my illness, however. The worst of the worst. She is on track with a number of things with the cause of this illness, such as emotional issues, the energy leak caused by an overactive immune system and leaky gut, poor mitocondrial function, a fermenting gut, the dangers of processed fats, seed oils, addictive eating of processed sugars but misses, or does not emphasize, on some points such as the need to entrain the circadian clock, the importance of light exposure and problems with nuts and vegetables and fiber for someone with a leaky gut. Further, I don't find her supplement recommendations all that necessary with an quality animal based diet. Magnesium is an exception. She is overly fixated on ketones and the ketogenic diet though I won't fuss too much on this point because what she recommends is a not a classical ketogenic diet and will not raise circulating ketones in anyone much at all. I thought it was great that she highlighted the importance of having meaning and purpose, citing Viktor Frankl, but when asked about brain retraining I don't get the feeling that she understands or appreciates all it's methods and nuances. Finally, I don't find her distinction between CFS and ME all that instructive or accurate. I would bet that anyone in her practice diagnosed with CFS under her criteria and whatever labs she uses still has problems with underlying inflammation. I understand that this interview was only 50 minutes long and to get into the real nitty-gritty on many things can take hours upon hours, even days upon days of discussion. Thank you for sharing this interview Raelen.

      I agree with you on many aspects. It struck me as odd to promote a keto diet that relies on Beta oxidation of fats in mitochondria when you assume these same mitochondria are failing. It would make more sense to rely on starch and sugars for glucose oxidation in the cytoplasm. This is more in line with the Pro Metabolic Diet. And while I agree with Myhill getting the mitochondria going again to get energized to face taks ahead, she is underestimating the deeply rooted effects of chronic hyper vigilant stress mode and a hyper sensitive nervous system due to adverse live experiences. I applaud you for you animal based diet, please let us all stay away from idiotic plant based notions by Ornish that will have us malnourished in no time. All the best, Gerlach Sven

    I followed dr myhills protocol many years ago. A lot of expensive supplements resulting in very colourful and expensive urine. But zero improvement. Having been a cfs sufferer for 40 years i am now absolutely 100 per cent certain that in most cases, it is an autonomic nervous system dysfunction. However, having been keto for two years, my psoriasis is 90 per cent gone , and i never get low blood sugar crashes anymore. My weight has also stabilised within perfect range. I have never met , or read, or seen a video with anyone who has recovered using dr myhills protocol.. the two supplements she recommends that i do agree with however, are vit D and k.

      Agree with your ANS conclusion. So I can think of 3 off the top of my head who recovered and used Dr. Myhill's diet/supplement protocol. Pamela Rose did Sarah Myhill's protocol (on Raelan's channel - and my website), so did Katie (the one in the trucker hat - she didn't want to reveal her last name for work reasons) on my site and another Katie (on Raelan's channel 2 years ago when she was pregnant) did AIP, which is similar. But for all 3 it was a component and they did other stuff to fully heal. 100% agree about the ANS dysfunction. I think often times things work synergistically. If someone is in an extreme fight-or-flight state, I don't think any supplement could be digested. And I don't think any diet is a cure if one's nervous system is not operating optimally. It sounds like keto is working for you now for your other stuff, which is great. I also know people who changed their diet over time like myself at the different stages of their health. And people who found plant based better. (Sidetone: I'm pretty sure Dr. Myhill also has a lot of helpful material about pacing on her website and book. It's been a while since I looked at them, but I had a neighbor show them to me.)

      @@HealwithLiz hello again liz ! Thanks for your detailed and thoughtful reply . I think supplements at right stage along with other protocols can support the body. But the reason they are lacking is their system is in a constant state of underlying fear and unease affecting every system in body. Unfortunately, sometimes being told that they are deficient in this, and deficient in that, and their mitochondria are deficient etc etc. This can make people feel more broken and frightened, and pouring more supplements into system is like trying to fill up a bucket which is full of holes. Until people feel safe (or safer) and more confident , then healing is an uphill struggle. God, the money i wasted on supplements back in day !. Kind regards to you.

Doctors said it was anxiety of course but the second I started taking magnesium supplements they went away and never came back. Not once in 6 years now unless I stop taking the magnesium supplement. I get plenty of magnesium from my diet but for some reason I depend on supplemented magnesium. No other supplement seems to do anything for me so I can relate to wasting thousands of pounds down the toilet.

    following myhill's protocol oct2018, I had SOOO many health improvements it was unreal!
    after 3 months; My skin was clear and itchy-free, no spots, no teeth pain, no brainfog, i had so much energy i felt i was bouncing off walls and went from being bedridden 98% and at the end of month 3 did a 5mile walk! I felt i gained an extra ten IQ points compared to pre ME/CFS era, My periods became regular and pain-free for 1st time in my life!
    Christmas happened and i havent successfully gotten rid of my sugar addiction since XD
    The biggest thing is that Myhill doesnt really focus enough or rather doesnt share enough info about the emotional/brain rewiring angle. Usually because in her success stories, as with many of Dan nueffer's vids of 'spontaneous recovery' that dont follow the ANSrewire blueprint, Many people end up rewiring their own brains naturally en route as their lives expand and they interact in the world again.
    but to be fair, Unless you know the specifics, It is very difficult to DIY brain rewiring without therapy.
    For instance, I needed a therapist to make me realise i was unusually harsh n critical on myself (i thought it was normal)
    I didnt need therapy to stop telling my self i was ugly, once i had internalised the previous lesson
    3 weeks ago, my therapist taught me i was using the word 'incompetent' incorrectly, using it when i meant 'i feel useless and pathetic from being avoidant for 'x' reasons. This has given me agency and the power of choice and it is a distinction that neither i nor my loved ones had been able to see.
    So while brain retraining programmes ARE awesome, they too are not the whole answer if you are limiting yourself in your thinking, word choices and world beliefs.
    Psychology is not what Myhill studied. I think it is unfair to expect her to disseminate information that has nothing to do with what she is trained in, the biological health systems

      I have also done an intense course of CBT with the NHS and that was what gave me the insight into my 'self-bullying' and taught me some useful strategies that worked very well with ANSrewire.

    I thinking tackling the ANS and avoiding crashes by frequent rest breaks is the way to go. I think a huge stress to the body like and infection or event triggers the body and it stays switched on. I believe doing the above things will at least improve symptoms with the possibility for a full recovery. I also believe it's important to tackle it head on earlier instead of trying to push through. I think thats why we see people recover most often in the first 2 years of having symptoms.

    • @tdlcraig1
      @tdlcraig1 2 года назад

      It's almost certainly viral. Driving an abnormal immune response, in turn driving an abnormal metabolism. What Dr Myhill suggests could potentially take stressor of the body. It won't be a cure, but a treatment that could give big benefits for some. It's well documented that gut microbiome is out of whack in CFS. Which in itself can drive many symptoms. If our immune system is unable to maintain an healthy balance due to a ongoing viral infection (gut, brain, CSF) then we must support it by eating correctly.

PK diet made me very unwell and like you say yourself often Raelan, there is no one size fits all approach when it comes to diet. She is very unsympathetic about this protocol and never talks about how dangerous it is for some people to follow such restrictive regimes, especially those with histories of disordered eating. Also perfectionism is the enemy of recovery, and this is an incredibly strict way of eating that's bound to inspire perfectionism in folks with type A personalities, which many of us do! I definitely resonate more with gentler and more holistic approaches, but everyone is different.

    Sarah, isn’t a doctor with the UK NHS any more as she was stopped from practicing by the BMA.
    She talks a good game and uses the same simple examples such as the car engine example over and over.
    I tried her regime of Keto with supplements and achieved no improvement whatsoever.
    It’s a good point that she has been running her private practice for a long time and there does not appear to be any client of hers that has taken to RUclips to herald their health improvement or recovery using her techniques. I became concerned about the amount of red meat I was consuming on the Keto diet.
    The way Sarah comes across is very awkward as she doesn’t show much social awareness regarding the to and fro of a balanced conversation. I believe this is another clue regarding her unconscious MO. Sarah appears to me to be intellectually arrogant that she is absolutely right and there is little or no scope for entertaining other thoughts and ideas regarding ME and CFS improvement strategies.
    Her disdain of doctors and medical authorities is quite right. It is appalling the way the medical profession have dealt with this illness to date. Truly hapless.
    Having suffered from CFS for over 30 years my own feeling is that diet has nothing to do with recovery. In my case my primal brain has become stuck in fright and flight mode and my body is applying the brakes via poor energy production and delivery, brain fog, heart palpitations, hypertension- basically causing chaos as it has lost trust in my ability to keep me ‘safe’.
    I will be looking into different approaches to calming my stuck nervous system naturally and recoding my misguided primal brain. Easier said than done. I’m very suspicious of the vendors of CFS recovery sales people.

      Ditto Paul H. I agree with everything you said. 32 years for me. I do think diet plays a role but it's not a one-size-fits-all situation. eg. I have discovered I'm sensitive to high oxalates. I have taken some of the supplements she recommends and they didn't make a blind bit of difference.

      Although I agree with you there is 1 person on RUclips who is doing her diet and supplements, is she close to cured no but no longer bed bound but she does go in and out of crashes it appears.I don't believe Keto is for everyone especially women. Diet can make a difference but not necessarily enough for ME/CFS. Obviously this depends on the starting point, if a person lived on fast food , any kind of diet that would have an element of eliminating processed food and common allergies it would probably make a difference for anyone sick or not sick. I don't like the strong focus on diet, it is kind of like the Dr Wahls protocol for MS where in the MS forums there are so few people ( if any) having success.

Dr Myhills very expensive protocol did absolutely nothing for me after many years & her strong focus on her paleo keto diet only suits some people! in all my time over years in healing & recovery groups, pages etc I haven’t seen anyone who has fully recovered from the Myhill protocol, some have some benefit from mito supplements, & her diet but it’s only an ongoing bandaid treatment, what is causing the mito dysfunction …. autonomic nervous system dysregulation! So many people recover fully without taking any of her rec supplements or her strict keto diet!! So what does that say?? I spoke with someone recently who has been following Myhills full protocol for 8 years, 8 years & is not any better, but is still doing it ?? now searching out brain retraining!

This has been for more than three years now and came on because of the stress of insomnia. I don't feel as though I ever get post-exertional malaise. This latter condition is now being said to be a definite symptom of ME. Loads of blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound all returned normal. I don't think my GP knows what's wrong.

    I have found Dr Myhill's books interesting to read. I feel the focus on mitochondria is helpful but narrow and doesn't take into account the research that shows more varied and whole body dysfunctions, e.g. cardiac preload failure identified by Harvard or vascular autoimmunity by Scheibenbogen and Wirth.That said, Myhill is certainly a champion for ME/CFS patients.
    Also regarding the Frankl analogy at the beginning (and I'm criticising Frankl here and not Myhill), in general I find the suggestion that people with a better attitude were more likely to survive the holocaust quite galling. In the face of the threat of being gassed or shot at any given moment, a positive attitude is unlikely to save you. It might of course help you to cope better but, as a random number, you'd be just as likely a target as anyone else.

    I got very excited in trying Dr Myhill's protocol as I have heard a lot about mitochondria. I have never been keen on the keto diet but willing to do anything to gain my old energy back and have no brain fog, but after reading most of the comments I am disheartened to hear so many viewers tried this method with no avail. I have followed the protocol and it works. Of course: it is not for everyone. It treats problems of the body, for the mind we would have to look for other specialists. You have to have a very clear mind and willpower to follow the diet without doing traps until you recover. The Western diet greatly unbalances our intestinal microbiota without us being fully aware of how much damage we carry. And they are usually not solved with 2 months of correct diet. At first, stopping eating the usual diet implies a very strong impact and the sensations are really unpleasant but they improve and you get better and better. His roadmap is sensible and useful for people who do not need constant support. We are not all the same

      I do think me/cfs is an umbrella term for a condition where people have the same/similar symptoms but different triggers so what helps one person to recover wont necessarily help another because the stressor on the human body has a different root cause x i have recovered before using brain training techniques and massively reducing stress/anxiety etc x other than a healthy-ish lifestyle i didnt take loads of supplements or cut any food groups out x this is why recovery can be so confusing for people and its so time consuming and costly trying to find what works for you x TMS approach is currently helping my recovery x i respect Dr Myhill and her work but we are all different i think 🤷‍♀️

      I don't think recovery happens in 3 days. I've been doing brain retraining for over 6 months and I'm the same. The mind is much stronger than we think. For what I've read the mitochondria can't function properly when th body is in high alert, which will make sense that calming the sympathetic nervous system will help solve the rest like a cascade. Everything is related

    • @jonathannelson7584
      @jonathannelson7584 2 года назад +7

      So what would you say are causing the symptoms, if not those things?
      Even if you buy the brain retraining hypothesis (which I do), most of the programs agree that the symptoms are real, in the body, caused by activation of the immune system, NS, mitochondria dysfunction etc. The brain is signaling these systems to activate due to a threat (that's no longer in the body).

    • @kinakomochi_cats
      @kinakomochi_cats 2 года назад +16

      @@jonathannelson7584 Correct. First of all I am no doctor, but what I've been reading is that the body is still in fight or flight mode, either due to viral debris or simply false alarm mode. That's high sympathetic activation. Because of that, the body attacks food that we normally can eat (causing MCAS). It also leads to dysautonomia because well, dysautonomia definition is an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system (i.e. balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system). That constant attack also impairs the pathway for energy leading to the mitochondria being impaired (I think that's where the NAD+ theory lies in). So I feel as a non doctor, that everything is a cascade effect of the hyperactivation of the sympathetic nervous system. That's why I think brain retraining makes sense, yet it takes time. Because the body has to very gradually realized there is no danger and we have to stimulate the parasympathetic part of our nervous system. Again, I'm no doctor, that's what I've gather from seeing interviews or reading

If I eat Keto diet, which means a lot of fats and meats, my body feels very tired to digest them. Carbs are much easier to digest and when you have chronic fatigue, then when less energy goes to digestion then better I feel. I did not completely remove dairy long term just for a period to help my digestive system some help. When I re-introduced them I only eat raw dairy and organic meats. Sarah Myhill has been around for a long long time but where are all the recovery stories from people doing her protocol! I haven’t seen any for all this time! The many many recoveries out there are from people who have not taken any mito supplements or followed her very strict diet, or have given up on all those things after many years of trying them! Consider that!

    • @delra34
      @delra34 Год назад

      I heard she charges quite a lot and that her treatment is expensive. Also, there are no evidence on how taking high doses of supplements will affect the body in the long run. I have suffered from M.E. for many years and at one point I was bedriden for a year. I now have an almost normal life and have not spent a penny. I believe that trauma caused my illness. Also, I realised I am a hypersensitive person and live my life accordingly. I made changes to diet, got rid of toxic people, have a job I love working from home etc. I am happier now that I was before the illness. There is hope. Keep doing what it feels right for you.

    I’m not a fan of Sarah. She leaves absolutely no room for any of the other theories that researchers are studying. Meaning she thinks she has it figured out. That’s very arrogant. And it’s very misleading
    Her confidence leads people to believe, like so many other doctors, if you just follow her regimen, you can be fixed. I don’t believe that for a second. There are people who are bedbound being fed by the tube. Who have likely been checked for every imaginable infection. People like the researchers son at the Stanford clinic. You can’t tell me this person doesn’t have a condition that science doesn’t understand.

      Lol yeah I love how ppl very severe are not mentioned on this channel. It’s just muh brain retraining recovery etc. ppl living thru excruciating conditions deserve to be championed as much as those who “recover”. Also taking responsibility for recovery is just ego.
      Sure u can make better day to day decisions which enable better rest & pacing but ppl who are in a dire condition already do this as much as possible & the majority don’t recover. But that’s not “positive” so I guess it has no place here.

    Strip back your diet to an elimination diet ie stick to clean red meat fatty as possible, not just muscle meat, include offal. Clean as in grass fed for life animals not fed on grains, also water and apple cider vinegar.

      Go careful there with AW aka Medical Medium. Sorry but there are many people who have been hurt on his protocols. Me being one of them. He's another 'one-size-fits-all', which always screams alarm bells at me now. What he prophesizes is based on a belief system. There is very little science behind what he says and the science behind what he does say can be found on the internet anyway, it's not new information like he claims.

      @@hea7055 Anthony William is absolutely NOT one size fits all. He conveys various protocols for various health challenges. I have followed his EBV protocol for 7 years and experience amazing healing benefits. A long list of symptoms due to decades of ME/CFS and more is gone. In my truth science is absolutely NOT sole approach to health. Then millions of people suffering from health issues would be cured. I observe so many people receiving health care based on scientific health research challenged with new symptoms and illnesses as the initial symptoms were dulled with pharmaceuticals and/or removed with surgery.
      I know that Anthony William is spot on that human beings are full of toxins and viruses.
      In addition full healing oftentimes requires to tend to emotional and mental healing. Anthony William includes some great information in this regard as well.

      It may be worth keeping in mind that those who depart from 'mainstream' medicine are often sacked, black-balled or suspended. Frequently, there is less income for drug companies by the likes of Sarah Myhill. This makes them a threat to the pharmaceutical income stream. A classic example is Dr. Andrew Wakefield. I am much less inclined to go along with so-called conspiracy theories these days, but if it looks like a duck...etc.

    What about glucos? the brain is made of glucogen and dyes if it doesn't get enough glucos? How is it possible that a doctore recommends cutting out glucos from good sources such as fruit and vegetalbes such as sweet potatoes and potatoes. The liver as she correctly tells us needs a lot of energy. The liver needs glucos so that it can keep it to send to the heart and brain. Remember the brain dyes without glucos.

    With the greatest respect to Dr Myhill but I doubt she visited a concentration camp. I'm from Germany and can tell you from all I know from my grandfather, education, documentaries and the knowledge I gained from visiting these horrible places: the NAZIs killed people who got ill, who were disabled or just unlucky to stand in front of a SS a...hole.. It wasn't the mind and the feeling that they can control their destiny. It's so disrespectful to say this and I hesitate to say but that's what this channel is all about: giving you the illusion that you have control over your body, your future and almost everything if you just do A or B. I'm sorry but that is so delusional and is like a religion - a mind calmer. I'm sorry, but this statement is just not ok!

It is a consequence of the cell-danger-response, a cell response that the autonomic nervous system can initiate when it perceives danger.
